Rhys’ mother is a distant cousin to the earl and Rhys is next in line to become Lord Sheffington if the heir apparent passes. Treating Rhys as a second son, the earl purchases a commission in the army for Rhys, who spends a dozen years fighting on the Continent until he receives word that he has inherited the earldom.
Turning to Dez, his closest friend from the war who recently returned to England when he unexpectedly became an earl, Rhys visits the new Lord Torrington—and is taken with Dez’s twin sister, Dalinda, a vivacious widow. The couple spends one magical night together but Rhys realizes the duchess is far superior to him socially and offers her friendship instead of marriage.
Can Dalinda convince Rhys that they are a perfect match—or will his stubbornness keep them apart forever?

My review :
Will his stubbornness be the end of their scorching chemistry...
My first read in this series was the previous book, a very moving read, so I eagerly awaited the next installment even if it was to be the last one. I was curious to lear more about Dalinda. It was nice for a change to read about a match made in hurry that turned in a good marriage of convenience, and while there was no true love between the spouses, they had a good union combining respect and a certain dose of affection. And this first marriage provided her with more than wealth and education and it also equipped her with the right weapons to be sure of herself and able to move in society without fault. Rhys began at the opposite side of the fence, a poor boy having to work to provide for his ailing mother. Until a twist of fate put a peer title on his path, and while he was finally allowed a permanent roof, he had to put his mark in the world. And a good soldier then officer he became. But his ultimate challenge came when the potential title becomes his and with it, the trial to restaure what is now his legacy. Dalinda is good for Rhys, she help him set his path in this new world and she offers him ideas and support in his new adventure. Yet, He pushes her back, unable to see his own worth, still rooted to his old self way. Their romance is one of maturity and while I did not agree with Rhys, they move into it with consideration and receptivity. Yet, with time, they come to the natural resolution of their instant attraction. A lovely tale without angst and a lot of empathy. 4.25 stars

To Win a Widow by Alexa Aston Soldiers and Soulmates #5
This is book 5 in the series. Okay as a stand alone novel, but probably better in order as characters are in this story from previous books.
Dalinda is going to be forced to marry a man old enough to be her grandfather, and with terrible manners to boot, all because of 'the incident'. Luckily she is saved from that fate by befriending a handsome widowed duke, who offers for her first. While not a love match, they have a friendship and have 2 children together. The story picks up after she is a widow.
Rhys begins this story as a groom working hard taking care of horses for a nobleman. He is shocked when he is contacted on behalf of an Earl, stating that he is the next closest living relative and must attend school and be ready to take up his place if the current Earl's son passes. He has a commission bought for him and spends a dozen years fighting the war on the Continent before returning to England.
Give this book a try if you like -soldiers – hero has served plenty of time in the Continent during the war -class differences - though they aren't 'really' class differences, the hero is very open about his beginnings and doesn't see himself as any more than that, a simple groom that took care of horses -an experienced heroine - she's been married, widowed and has 2 children -moderate steam - a few kisses and a few full scenes. The scenes aren't long at all and not extremely explicit, though one happens very early in the book.
Sadly this book was NOT my thing. While the beginning was rather interesting getting to know their backgrounds, it was a long time before the characters even meet each other. Over 20% into the book before they even know each other exist in this world. That's a long time. And I could forgive it if there wasn't even more separation further into the story.
The fact that they have just met and barely know each other and then fall into bed with each other was also a turn off for me. I thought the book was going to border on erotica with the way it started like that, but then there is a very, very, very long dry spell. Not even close to erotica. And the scenes aren't extremely long, detailed or explicit really so it didn't even have that going for it. I just totally lost interest. I couldn't see what was drawing them together other than pure physical attraction. Once they had sex the book lost any sexual tension it had. Which wasn't much. :(
I give 2.5 stars rounded to 3. Thanks NetGalley for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Working as a groom, Rhys never thought he would one day become the Earl of Sheffington. By a distant connection through his mother and a series of events, he was called home from the war, having to sell out his commission to take over the title and estates. What did he know about that? He would have to spend time with his friend Dez and seek advice. Dalinda, Dez's sister had been married to a Duke who had passed away leaving her with two young sons but free to live her life. While visiting her twin Dez, she was introduced to Rhys and that moment was to change her life. "She had never been struck physically by a man's presence--until now." Can I just sigh? Their connection was truly instant. Yes I have to sigh again... Alexa Aston always creates a story that makes my heart beat faster and this one definately does! I could not wait to find out what would happen to these two and I enjoyed every word!! I have enjoyed this series so much and this was a great addition. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
Rhys is now the Earl , but after his life as a soldier and being born into the lower class of society its so hard to get use to.
His best friends sister is the one who helps . Dalinda in now a Widow with two young boys. She would love a bigger family and a loving husband. Maybe Rhys is the one.
I loved that Dalinda got a second chance at a loving relationship, and that her boys were ready to accept it. She’s a tough cookie , not afraid to try for love.
Rhys is a sweet but firm man , always out to please ,but not to be downtrodden. His greatest enemy is himself, he doesn’t believe he deserves the Duchess.
The book was inspiring in both their relationship and the Hospital storyline. The boys characters were brilliant, they were very entertaining, and very enjoyable to read about.
I thoroughly loved the story and series. Alexa pleases my sole with her writing, I’m always satisfied at the end of her books. Addictive reading.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
4.5 stars This was an engaging read with very likeable characters. Rhys was such an honourable man who had achieved much in his life. He was now the Earl of Sheffington and felt out of his depth. Dalinda was now a widow with two sons, she hadn’t experienced a happy time with her father and older brother. When Rhys and Dalinda met, they felt an instant attraction but Rhys felt unworthy of Dalinda. What I did like about Rhys was that he was quite willing to tell people about his background. He was also willing to accept help from Dalinda, who had experience in running an estate. There is more to this story but I don’t want to give anything away, except to say there were some tear jerking moments with Rhys and Dalinda’s two sons. I have purchased the previous four books in this series and I’ve enjoyed everyone. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I did purchase my own copy for my kindle library.
A lot of people don't like books with no villains, no conflict, no black moment, no bad people. Everyone instantly likes everyone else and good things happen throughout the book. In these times of daily conflict, much heart-wrenching news, fear over health, and a suspicion that there are lots of bad people in the world, this is just what I needed. The writing is elegant, sex is steamy, and yes, there is instant attraction. But the characters were charming and the ending happy. It was a nice change.
In this rags-to-riches story, Rhys Armistead discovers that due to an odd quirk of fate, he is the only possible heir to the Earl of Sheffington if the current heir does not survive his youth, resulting in opportunities that would never have otherwise come his way. Content with life in the military, where he has made astounding progress, Rhys never thought he would actually inherit the Sheffington Earldom. Faced with the reality of a crumbling estate, he turns to his best friend and fellow officer Dev, who together with his widowed twin sister, comes to his rescue. Dalinda has had her own heartache and pain, but she too knows the relief of being rescued from an untenable situation. Visiting her twin, she meets up with Rhys and the attraction between them is electric. When Dalinda tries to back out of further contact with Rhys, he is desperate enough to demand that she keep her word to help him, even though he feels that he will never be enough for her. It takes the words of a wise man to make Rhys realise that if he doesn't let go of his insecurities, he may never know the happiness that he could have with Dalinda. This novel is well written and emotive, drawing the reader into the plot as Dalinda and Rhys discover the way to happiness. Although part of a series with characters from previous books appearing in this one too, it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Such a beautiful and warm hearted love story between two people who truly deserved a happily ever after. It's never an easy road that leads to love, though, and both had their share of adventure.
Rhys is a hero after my own heart, he's got such a beautiful heart and no matter how hard his beginnings were and the devastation of war that he lived through, he loves strongly and passionately. When he suddenly finds himself the Earl of Sheffington, he is at a loss of what to do with his estate that has been neglected for years and calls on his dear friend, Dez, to help him. Little did he know he'd also get the help of Dez's sister, Dalinda!
Dalinda, a widowed Duchess with 2 sons (I just adored her boys), would love to remarry and have more children. When she meets Rhys, she almost immediately knows he's the one but even after one night of loving, he feels he's too far below her station for them to ever have more than that one night. It's up to her to show him that they're perfect for each other:)
I have to say, it really boggles my mind all the staff that they would have needed to hire to run such a huge estate. I also love the idea Dalinda came up with, to help those wounded soldiers, it really warmed my heart. Beautifully written story as only Alexa Aston can do.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
What a wonderful read! This story tweaked my emotions most of all in this book series. I laughed, and I cried, and I sighed.
Dalinda, Duchess of Gilford, is a widow who doesn't really know what to do with herself. Her stepson has taken the estate management in hand and her two young sons attend boarding school. Deciding to visit her twin brother and meet her new nephew, Dalinda experiences instant overwhelming sexual chemistry with her brother's other house guest.
With his new estate a mess, Rhys, a self made man risen from stable groom to military officer to Earl of Sheffington, seeks advice from his closest friend who unexpectedly became an earl a year or so previously. Rhys certainly did not expect to find himself completely enamored of his best friend's twin, a duchess no less! After a night of passion, Rhys suffers a supreme case of not-good-enoughness, and relegates Dalinda to friendship only status.
Dalinda, sure that she and Rhys share a real love, must try to convince him that worthiness has more to do with action than birth.
The plot has plenty of action including renovating and staffing the estate, a country ball, establishing a private veterans' hospital and rehabilitation facility, and explicit sexual encounters.
This story has one of my favorite hero types: self-made man, humble beginnings to aristocrat. A passionate, smart, organized, creative, self-sacrificing, loving, single-parenting heroine like Dalinda has great appeal to me. To my delight the author brought many characters from prior books of the series into this story. The boys, Arthur and Harry, charm again as when introduced in the third book. My favorite scenes involved the boys in conversation with Rhys or Dalinda, and I shed a few tears at the lapel pin ceremony for the boys.
I loved this book, reading it straight through in one sitting. Seldom do I rate a piece of fiction at 5 stars, but this delighted, entertained, and pulled at my heart strings in such a pleasant way. Thank you Alexa Aston, for a read that was like spending time with old friends!
To Win a Widow by Alexa Aston is number five the Soldiers and Soulmates series where we meet people we have met before, including the widow, the Dowager Duchess of Gilford, named Dalinda. This is a reluctant bridegroom trope but not for the usual reasons. Rhys Armistead, the new Earl of Sheffield, feels in no way ready to assume this life. He had not been born into it but had been adopted out of the stable, when it was discovered that his mother was a distant cousin of the earl. The earl's son, Viscount Raleigh had been not in good health and the earl wanted a spare in case the worst happened. Now it had happened and he had sold his commission and is home to assume the earldom. Through a series of coincidences, he meets Dalinda and she agrees to come and help him get his country house in order as it has been sadly neglected. He is already in love, but she is so far above him socially that he knows there is no hope, plus she is still in mourning for her dead husband, who she obviously had loved very much.
There are several stories here: Dalinda's, Rhys', and theirs. These are two really good characters, somewhat trapped in the mores of their society. It is fun to revisit Dalinda's brother, Dez, Lord Torrington, who had been Rhys' friend in the military; his wife, Anna, who has her own story. The struggle the two of them make fighting their attraction as well as the expectations of the ton, make the casual reader aware if the many difficulties living amongst them presented. It was a good plot, full of interesting characters. A joy to read. I recommend it.

These can be stand alone, but I urge you to read this amazing, emotional series.
The h is about to be married off to a disgusting man her father has chosen just to make her life awful. By accident the h is at a party and leaves to get control of her emotions before her father announces her betrothal. She happens upon the Duke who is hiding out from his own party. She tells him her story, and for some reason, decides to marry her. He's honest with her and explains, he will always love his deceased wife, and if she can except that, then they can marry. He provides her a nice life and they have two children. So she is not an innocent miss.
It took me awhile to care for the h and H together. They didn't make an immediate click for me. They seemed to lust for each other first and I like a slow burn to happen. But, their relationship soon won me over.
The h's children added to the story and it was amazing, how they matured from the last story to this one. As with many series stories, there are cross over character's and the two couples in this one, were my favorites. Loved meeting up with them again and seeing how there lives have changed.
There is lovemaking, descriptive and heat level 4 to 4.5 out of 5. Described several times. There is a story about returning veterans and how the Military didn't provide for them when they were discharged due to injuries. This was heart aching for me. I am a women Navy Veteran and had many friends who served in the Vietnam War. This was written well and was emotional.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and steam. (ljb)
This is the last of this series. Each of these is a stand-alone story, by I'd recommend reading them in order so you can follow the interactions and start of the friendships that play a big part in each of the books. Loved Rhys & Salina and their love story was sweet, tender & sensually satisfying. There are sex scenes in all 5 books, but not frequently, not too graphic, and all of them fitting the story line.
The Duke of Gilford was Dalinda’s savior. Saving her from a horrible marriage to another Dalinda vowed to make the best of her life with the Duke. Neither one loved each other, but both cared deeply and had a wonderful life together until he died leaving her alone with her two young sons. Determined to make happy life for herself and her sons Dalinda decides to visit her twin brother and his wife on her way to her dowager house. When she arrives there her brothers best friend Rhys the new Earl of Sheffington is also there seeking assistance from her brother Dez.
Rhys was not born into this life and is having to learn how to manage his newly acquired title and estate. Seeking advice from his old friend Rhys meets the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. Dalinda is immediately attracted to Rhys when she meets him. Dalinda has never felt such an attraction to a man as she feels towards Rhys and in one wonderful night feels passion she has never felt before. The more time they spend together they more each falls hard, but Rhys can’t seem to get past the fact that Dalinda is way above his station. Rhys will have to overcome feeling he is not good enough for Dalinda for them to be happy.
Such a wonderful story! Loved both Rhys and Dalinda! You definitely want to read this one!
Dalinda was being forced to marry a man of her father's choosing until the Duke of Guilford stepped in and saved her. They had 12 years and 2 sons before he passed. Rhys was a groom when he was suddenly plucked up and informed he could be the heir to an earl. He spent 12 years in the Army before being called back to England at the death of the earl's son. The earl died almost immediately leaving Rhys as an earl with no experience. He meets Darinda at her brother's house who is also Rhys's best friend. Very good read.
Loved this book! Rhys was perfect for Dalinda. Although she had a great relationship with her first husband, it wasn't a love match. She did fall in love with Rhys, but he was afraid he wasn't good enough for her because of his humble beginnings. Dalinda helped Rhys when he had to leave the military to become a Earl. She also suggested he use some of his estate to help disabled veterans. It was great that Ms. Aston brought attention to the story of disabled veterans in the England's war with France. She also included an epilogue about Dez and Anna. Loved that Dalinda had twin girls and an heir for Rhys. I enjoyed this series and this book was a great way to end the series.
Dahlinda met Rhys and was smitten! This tall handsome soldier was what she never knew she wanted or needed! Rhys came from humble beginnings and thought this beautiful Duchess was far above him! At one Rhys went to London and thought to marry a debutante but the heart wants what it wants! Helping out wounded soldiers and establishing a hospital did help Rhys take his mind off the capable and considerate Duchess but not for long! Will Rhys figure out that he's now an Earl and no matter his previous life he deserves love and needs to reach for it! Will Dahlinda son's accept Rhys? Is he up for the challenge? Read on....
I always love stories with military men in it. I know when the men came home to be Earls or Dukes it was a different life but Rhys found love in his adjustment.
This was a terrific read from start to finish. Not your typical debutante story and a successful plot line. Read it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
Rhys a lowly stable boy was elevated to Earl of Sheffington. His only training was a military career and he reached out to an army buddy, Dez, newly Lord Torrington. Dez would assist him with learning to run his estate. Dez twin sister, Dutchess Dalinda, a beautiful widow was helping Dez and offered her assistance to Rhys. They immediately had a connection, but he was stubborn and knew he was socially unsuitable for her. Will the magic of love find a forever or will his fears keep them apart.
As a young boy Rhys is educated as the possible heir of Sheffington. Three years later, the old Earl buys him a commission in His Majesty's Army to fight the French. Twelve years later, the Earl of Sheffington's son dies and on his own deathbed forces Rhys to sell his commission and return to London. As the new earl, Rhys feels totally inept and asks for help from his best friend Dez. Introduced to Dez's widowed twin sister, Dalinda, Duchess of Gilford, a spark between them leads to one night of passion. Only one night's not enough. A very smart Duchess who brings order out of chaos, is the one woman Rhys really needs. Full of compassion and love between family, friends and forgotten soldiers. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
What a beautiful novel! I absolutely loved the story of Rhys and Dalinda. The absolute love they had for their family and friends was heart warming. Their passion to help others, turning their home into a place of healing and help was so wonderful! Alexa Aston is so talented. I lover her stories!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was well laid out and well written. While it talked of soldiers and wars effect on them it also talked about love and family.
I love these stories. How the characters are connected but stand alone story. Dalinda felt she would never find love and so comfortable in her life until she meets Rhys, friend of her brothers. Then she couldn't live without his touch. So fearful story
It was well written. The characters are realistic. It was a hard book to put down! I was so excited to read this book after reading the other books in the series. It has all the feels!!
*I received a free ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*
I should start by saying this is the only book from the series that I have read, but has made me definitely want to go back and read the previous novels. I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. Rhys and Dalinda are great as both individuals and a couple. I loved that Dalinda was portrayed as both a strong, independent, smart woman as well as a woman who loved being a mother and wanted more children. She didn't give up one aspect of her personality in order to have the other and found a man who loved everything there was about her. Rhys struggling with his new position in society was realistic and made you understand why he didn't think he was good enough for Dalinda. There are parts of the story that happen a little too easily - setting up the veteran's hospital, getting money for that venture, etc. The parts involving Garfield weren't really necessary for the story and the scene with him and Harry was resolved so easily you really wondered why it was included at all. Overall, this is a great read if you're looking for a sweet romance to fill your days.
