Who was Jesus Christ? No true Christian believes He was sinful. But could He have sinned? This book, originally published in 1876, was the most original of all of Plumer’s writings, defending the impeccability of Jesus Christ with exegesis, theological acumen, and logical precision. Plumer approaches this relevant topic from biblical, theological, and historical perspectives, and helps us think through the questions of sin, temptation, the will, and the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ. Edited by Dr. Miles Smith, with a foreword by Dr. Blair Smith.
William Swan Plumer (July 26, 1802 – October 22, 1880) was an American clergyman, theologian and author who was recognized as an intellectual leader of the Presbyterian Church in the 1800s.
This is a fantastic book. Highly recommended. Unfortunately, I believe this edition omits the appendix of the original which is a tiny gold mine that might have been worth attaching.
Edit: I do not have the book in hand and do not have the evidence I thought I had that the appendix was omitted. Whether or not it is included, it is still a tiny gold mine!
Really solid content. This edition does a really good job of providing translations to most of the Latin text. I really enjoyed the interaction with the Greek text, but as a beginner Latin student, the translations in the footnotes were super helpful. Caleb and his team at Log College Press do a fantastic job putting together these new editions of old and often forgotten works.
Though the truth argued is glorious, I found the argument to be too disorganized to recommend reading.
It all boils down to the truth that Jesus took on human nature, but was not a human person – and peccability or impeccability are attributes of persons, not natures.
