A Princess. A Warrior. A Slave. A kingdom falling to ruin. And a Queen meant to save them all.
Navarre has been at peace for three hundred years, the prophecies of the promised princess no more than a whispered memory of the past. Sheltered from the world around her, naïve Princess Joseline is no stranger to the responsibility and isolation of being heir. But when an attack on her eighteenth birthday reveals the looming return of the legendary demon king, shattering every protective boundary around her, Joseline is thrown full force into the long-forgotten prophecy and the role she plays in his demise.
Saved from Aeron’s clutches by a secret organization of warriors trained to protect her, Joseline is forced to choose between her curiosity to understand their motives and her duty to her people’s safety. Swept into the impending war threatening her country, Joseline must learn at all costs not only to fight, but to control the ancient magical power awakening within her.
Her life and the lives of her people depend on it.
Just your typical lesbian faerie queen, spreading the love and joy wherever she can and taking her job as friendly neighborhood witch seriously. <3

Beautiful start!!! I adored the first book in what seems like a very promising series. The author created four solid characters for us to love. Quinn was one of my favorites but what really stole the show for me was the relationship and dynamics between Eva and Dax. It was what kept me glued to the pages. All characters grew on me but these two have a special place in my heart. The book is full of adventure and I cannot wait to see what happens to these characters. Is it 2021 yet??? 😍
Book's greatest strength: the darker scenes. Especially whenever the demons themselves are on page, I think the descriptions are always well-done for how horrifying they are, and the action is frequently engaging without being drawn out. Pacing: A little uneven. Some of the beginning felt pretty rushed, while later there were places that felt really slow. Characters: there are a Wide variety of characters in this book. So far Evalyn is probably my favorite. I liked her immediately upon her introduction. Maya is probably my least favorite. For most of the book she just kind of seems jealous and bratty. Plot: I'm stealing this from cooking shows, but when you give a reader two plots, they're frequently going to like one more than the other. In this case, I was much more interested in what was happening on the island between Evalyn and Dax. Joseline's storyline provided better fight scenes, but is more focused on training. The first half of the book seems weighted in her favor, but then Evalyn's plot dominates the second half. Romance: most of the romance is budding, so its hard to comment on it. Seems like a slow burn.
After revisiting this book, I've had some changes in my outlook on it.
While I still find it a fun romp and a lovely world to visit, I've had a harder time with a few of the aspects. Specifically, the dynamic between Dax and Evelyn personally sits harder and heavier with me in the terms of balance of power as well as the way their history goes back so far. The way Dax sometimes looks at her in their progressing relationship and thinks of the little girl she was just really rubbed me wrong. I found myself really not enjoying Dax as a character or the arc on the island as much because of that.
There were also certain POVs that felt more superfluous and just a few plot things that haven't aged well with this reader.
This is a book beloved by many, which is fine! But for me, upon reflection, my perspective shifted and unfortunately I can't enjoy the book quite as much as I first did.

"Believe it or not, little dove, I'm as much a prisoner here as you are. I can only keep you safe in so many ways."
Awakening Shadows was such a fun read, an enormous world in a tiny package, wrapped up pretty with great characters and tied off with a nostalgic ribbon on top. It reminded me so much of the YA fantasies I loved as a teen, with all the favorite scenes, character dynamics and tropes I remember. I probably loved it most for that reason, how it took me back and made me feel like a teen again. Though I did appreciate the maturity of this novel; I didn't feel like I was being talked down to, which is my key issue with most YA.
The world-building was so nicely woven into the story, without ever info-dumping or giving unnecessary detail, an impressive feat in high fantasy! Hawthorn gives us just enough to wet our appetite for the world, and I sincerely hope we will get to finally devour it whole in the coming sequels! The world felt so well developed with only small hints, I wanted to see it so much more!
I will say I wish there was less POV switching--I would have much rather gotten to know a few characters more intimately than move around so much. I can only imagine how much *more* I would have loved the characters if I could just have gotten to know them a bit better.
The last 1/4 of the novel did start to lose my interest. The tension fizzled out and I no longer felt like I was progressing through the story. Throughout the novel, there are many introductions (characters, world-building, plot points, etc) but little to no resolution. The last bit of the book just wasn't satisfying for this reason.
The effortless world-building, intriguing characters and charmingly written relationships did it for me, however. Definitely interested in reading the sequel!
I was sent this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Sydney!
My weakness is books about royals and this book has that. More so, there is magic, fae, evil kings, and a fight for power. I know we have read many books with similar topics, but they haven’t gotten old yet!
I really enjoyed the various point of views in this book, though I enjoyed reading Quinn’s the most. He was an integrating character with an unknown past. Naturally, I’m drawn to these types of characters. I loved his relationship with Fallon, as well as his friends. It was definitely healthy but dealt with basic family problems.
The pacing of this book was also quick paced, which I appreciated. I don’t need chapters to drag out to reach a big plot point. I enjoy small plot points along the way, and this definitely delivered.
I wish I got more of Dax, he was probably my favorite character overall. He reminded me so much of Killian from Once Upon A Time, so of course I was attracted to him. Thought I didn’t really understand the slaves POVs in this book. I know it will eventually come together more, since the author plans for this to be a series. Which is good because there are many questioned that I still need answered.
Overall, this book was so fun, fast paced, and an easy read!
#AwakeningShadows really was a lovely fantasy debut!
It is a #YoungAdult fantasy that starts off like other fantasy books in that genre: With a young princess that lived a very protected live, get to go out of the castle grounds for the first time and everything that could go wrong does basically go wrong.😂 And while you might be like “I’ve heard that story before.” let me tell you: this is different somehow. It has a different feel to it!
I liked this book from the very start. It sucked me in, it has a wonderfully easy going writing style, multiple POVs of which I didn’t dislike a single one and short chapters with mini-cliffhangers that create a sort of urgency to just keep on reading. And keep on reading I did! I couldn’t stop, because I always wanted to know what would happen next. And what I really liked about Awakening Shadows was that even though the princess is supposed to be the main character, with a prophecy hanging about her head and powers she doesn’t fully understand yet, the story didn’t solely surround her. There were other important characters as well. Quinn was one of them and I really liked the revelation that surrounded his character!😍 I was also really curious about Eva and Dax. While I didn’t know how to place Eva in the beginning, her POV quickly became one of those I was especially looking forward to. In part, because she didn’t travel with the main group. Her ending in the book was absolutely brutal and honestly I wish that something will turn around, because I don’t want what happened to be real, but I also have wild theories surrounding her and a possible connection to the main group.
Awakening Shadows did surprise me in other instances as well though and I have a feeling that we will see some characters that we met along the way again sooner or later.
All in all a really good book, one you don’t want to put down, with many interesting characters that are all equally as important to the story and a wonderful fluent and easy-going writing style. I think this is only the start of an epic journey that will lead us to many different places in this world and probably an epic battle in the following books!💜💜💜
Thank you to Book of Matches Media Book Tours and the author Sydney Hawthorn for the free review copy of Awakening Shadows. It was my choice to read and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
The story is told from multiple POVs and I found each one to be equally interesting. I immediately felt connected to the female MCs upon first meeting them (Joseline & Evalyn) and reading their first chapters so I couldn't wait to read more.
When book 2 comes out, I'm going to have to snatch it up right away to find out what happens next and I'm hoping the characters from each storyline will intersect in some way. I'm assuming so since the comparable authors on the bomm tour info write up for an arc reviewer like me said that Awakening Shadows is good for fans of Throne of Glass and Shadow and Bone. If you haven't been living under a bookish rock somewhere, then you know that in these books, even if the character's stories seem separate, they will intersect in one way or another.
Awakening Shadows earned 4 stars from me! The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because: it did feel very reminiscent of other fantasy books I've read. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because obviously, there is a reason why I love this type of fantasy book but, I also guessed a few of the twists that were towards the beginning, and one of them I saw coming a mile away. The other similarities to fantasy stories I've read came through in some of the characters, plot information, and tropes.
The ending really surprised me so that's a big plus and the villains/evil force is a cool concept but, there weren't enough scenes from this POV. I would have liked more or dedicated villains/evil force chapters throughout, just as frequently as our main characters. I suppose the reasoning behind keeping this aspect a bit more under wraps is so we get to know our characters a bit better before they start really fighting against this, and so, I'm ok with that!
I'd have to say that my favorite part, beyond my love of the female MCs and my interest being piqued about the villains/evil force, is the banter and tension between characters. This is where the unexpectedness and uniqueness really come into play because even though the characters, plot, and the setting of Awakening Shadows feel somewhat familiar, the decisions they make while interacting kept me on my toes.
This was somewhat enjoyable but also predictable. Especially the growing attraction between Joseline and Quinn. Soooo predictable. I was much more interested in Evalyn and Dax! I like them and I’m far more invested in their story but with that ending I am so scared for Dax. I don’t know about anyone else but I also want to know more about Kellan and the little dwarf boy. I’m hoping they escape and yes, I mean Kellan too. There is more to him and I’m sure he will have his own sad story I’ll sympathize with.
Oh! I’m really interested in the little fairy boy that’s with Shea. I can’t wait to hear more about him.
This single star is for the phenomenal cover alone. It is easily one of the prettiest covers I've seen and immediately lured me in. The map was also very well done, and I was therefore very excited to dive into this book. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed by the quality. In the acknowledgements, the author mentions two editors and numerous beta readers having looked over this book, yet I found multiple SPaG errors in the text.
I'm also not sure why this book was told in multiple PoVs, since Princess Joseline was the clear protagonist here? For example, why the first chapter did not begin with Princess Joseline's perspective escapes me. We also didn't get to see much time in her "normal world" at the beginning before Aeron's minions strike in Chapter 2. Princess Joseline was spoiled and annoying, however, so the PoV swaps were actually well welcomed. Having said that, I'm not sure exactly what some of the PoVs, such as Julia's, added to the narrative.
I also didn't like how the fact that Quinn was a man-hoe was repeatedly shoved down my throat. It made him unattractive to me, although I suppose that the opposite effect was intended? The way that him and Jenson regarded women actually bordered onto being quite predatory at times, as well.
There was also a strange moment early on where Joseline suddenly changes her mind and conveniently decides to trust Quinn and co despite protesting vehemently and slapping him multiple times. This was excused as being down to the Goddess Blessed Princess but it felt very forced. I would have DnFed at this point, but I hate not finishing books.
The whole Dax and Evalyn thing weirded me out, especially with him having captured her as a slave when she was a child, and it just read like Stockholm Syndrome to me.
Speaking of the end, it was also very anti-climatic. I turned the page on my Kindle, expecting to revert back to Joseline/Quinn's PoV but instead found myself face to face with the Acknowledgements page?
Obviously this book has received many glowing reviews, and I'm in the minority here. So, maybe it is just a matter of taste? I'm not a fan of Sarah J. Maas's work, and this book seemed to be in a similar vein. The author also apparently started this work when she was ten, and I hate to say it but it sort of reads like a ten year old's writing in places?
Regardless of my opinion, the author's love for her characters and world, along with the countless years she has spent on this story, shine through in the prose. For that reason, I sincerely wish her the best on her publishing journey.
((P.S. I'm also not convinced of the abilities of the editors who were hired, since they appeared to miss many typos. To name the few that I can remember: ".,", "he's is waiting", "The silence following was deadly" (should be "The following silence was deathly" or "The silence which/that followed was deathly", since deadly means dangerous whereas "deathly" indicates the kind of eerie/ominous vibes that I assume were intended?) ))
This was such an interesting read! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the different POVs. All of the POVs were fantastic to read from, and it's always fun to see what the characters think of each other. While I'm still super curious as to how all the individual stories will connect, we did get to see them intertwined with this big, bad villain. Which honestly may have been my favorite part, I loved how creepy the shadow monsters were and I can't wait to discover the sinister plan that's already being laid out. I'm a tad iffy on parts of the magic system, but I hope that's explored in the next book!
I received an ARC of this title from the author through Books of Matches Media in exchange for an honest review.
Awakening of Shadows is a stunning debut by Sydney Hawthorn - an enthralling fantasy tale with an extra touch of magic.
The story is so well written, that it instantly draws you into the characters and narrative. Following the story of Quinn, Princess Joseline and the new-found company they find themselves in after a shocking betrayal and twist of fate.
This story has it all - from fae, shadow demons, royalty, frienship, heartache, mystery and a wonderfully unique magic system. I absolutely loved the characters and particularly enjoyed meeting Evalyn and Dax. The way in which the story developed and switched between all the different POVs was truly captivating and I didn’t realise Just how invested I was until the end.
If you enjoy all the ingredients of a classic fantasy series combined with skilled story telling, then this book is for you. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
Thanks to the author Sydney Hawthorn for sending me a free copy in exchange of an honest review.
Awakening shadows is a fun, fast paced fantasy with lots of action and magic all through. The book has an amazing pacing and short chapters which I really appreciated because of how it made the plot crisp and to the point. Author Sydney Hawthorn bravely maneuvered multiple POV's for this plot, while it might get confusing at times jumping from POV to POV, it will certainly get easier once you get the hang of it as all the characters are introduced. I liked how she based the entire plot line on a prophesy, while this might not be something new, I enjoyed waiting to see the unraveling of the prophesy bit by bit. The magic system is simple yet the author was able to incorporate magical beings like Fae, shadow creatures quite effortlessly. The MC's Quinn and Princess Joseline's storyline was quite fun to read as Quinn blood sworn warrior has to tame the haughty princess Joseline, there is budding romance between them which I believe will take a full flight in the next book. I also enjoyed the character of Eva, I felt like she is a mix of Manon+Aelin+ Elide from ToG, I have a feeling she will be my favorite character from the entire series and I cannot wait to read more of her storyline
The author had most definitely laid down a good foundation for the next books in the series with an intriguing storyline and engaging characters.Overall I enjoyed the quick read and am looking forward to pick up the next book.
I know I waited until closer to book 2, which worked out well as I am part of the ARC team so I was able to dive right in.
I LOVED this book, Sydney’s writing seems so smooth, the POV changes keep the story flowing. This book is heavier on the world building side but that works as it’s setting the stage for book two. I adore the characters especially Quinn and Evalynn. I also love the relationship between Fallon, Jensen and Quinn.
This book is only just scratching the surface of what’s to come, I feel very connected to the story and that ending!!!!!
Also I need Shea to be my pet 😂
The secrets and twists and turns just had me so engaged I will gush about this book to anyone. Highly recommend!!!
I was very excited to dive into this read and it didn’t disappoint! I’m usually not a huge fan of more that 2ish POV but the author did a great job with the characters with was easy to really tell them apart. The character development for all of them is well paced, I’m thinking my fave is Eva for sure but they are all pretty close up there. The Magic system and descriptions of the world and other characters was perfect and really sucked me into the story overall.
Excited for book 2 because that ending … I need more!
Nerdy Book Box is a book box subscription service that supports Indie authors. In the December box, I received a copy of Awakening Shadows, Book 1 of the Navarre Chronicles by Sydney Hawthorn. Awakening Shadows is a dark(ish) fantasy that captures the reader and makes one forget they are reading entirely.
The chapters shift between two main storylines:
Princess Joseline, on her eighteenth birthday, is attacked by followers of Aeron, the demon king. Yet the princess is rescued by members of The Order of Kynire sworn to protect her. Thrust into a world she thought merely childish fairytales, Joseline must learn to fight as well as control the power of the Goddess within her so she might save herself and her people from Aeron and his Shadow Beasts. Will Joseline be able to fulfill the prophecy of the promised princess?
Evalyn, a fae, has been enslaved mining obsidian for eighteen years. The dreaded pirate lord, Dax, who sealed her fate by bringing her to the island is her enemy – she dreams of revenge. However, Dax tells her he wants to protect her. Will Evalyn be able to withstand Dax’s charm, and does she want to? Will she escape and get her revenge?
Woven within these storylines are:
-Strong female characters -An enemies to lovers trope -Excellent world building -A budding romance -Action and combat -White Aonani foxes -Secret identities -Magic
The first chapter was a bit slow for me, but after that, I devoured the book and I really am excited for the next book in the series. Hawthorn has created a beautiful fantasy world, and, as a reader, I am so grateful to have discovered it. Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
This is a wonderful debut fantasy novel. Fast paced and full of action, it will keep you on your toes from start to end. I read it in less than 2 days, so you can tell it certainly The writing is very solid, and the characters are all well developed and have depth. I really liked having different POVs, although there was sometimes more swapping around than I would have preferred. However, it did keep the plot moving, and allowed us to see the story from several angles. I’m hoping to see more of a couple of POVs we only saw a little of in book 1 (Julia, Elyon) - I do think it was hard to see right now where they exactly fit into the story as a whole. I will say I struggled to grasp the concept of the world for about the first 50 pages, but once I understood all the pieces I really loved the story it was telling.
I think if I had one wish, it would be that we could have had a couple more chapters to really flesh out some of the relationships that aren’t quite as developed on the page (Jenson and Quinn in particular). I can see the influences of several of my own favourite authors, and that made this book feel like home to me! This is a debut, and yes its not perfect, but the book shows a lot of promise for a truly epic series, and I can’t wait to get ahold of the next one.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review, and I am so glad that I agreed, because this book did not disappoint! As a huge fan of YA fantasy, I am usually skeptical of books with the chosen one trope, but Sydney's version of it is amazing. Her characters are all fun and flawed in the best ways, and her world is vast. The main story is told from three POVs, and the relationships are all swoonworthy. My favorite arc is Eva's, a slave with a secret, and her journey through pain to find her inner strength. I also love the other main heroine, Princess Josie, who is both soft and strong in her own ways, and her dedication to her people is admirable. This book is a quick read, perfect for your next binge, and it promises so much more from the series to come.
Y’all. This book is 🔥. Sydney knows her stuff. Her story is compelling right from the first page and you are pulled into the adventure of Josie, Quinn, Jenson, Eva & friends right from the start. If you love fantasy, magic, evil shadow dictators, fight scenes, princesses who ARENT in distress, and lots of romance, then you will love this read. Follow Josie as she learns her true power, Quinn as he learns about his true self, & Eva as she discovers who she really is beyond the chains that bind her. If you love the intensity of Throne of Glass then you’ll love this read! Don’t miss out on this one friends. Put it at the top of you TBR list and then go snag it RIGHT NOW.
The greatest triumph of this book has to be the lovingly built and immersive worldbuilding. It's fantastic! Around every corner there was more to learn and each detail had its own well-established history. This was the highlight of the book for me, hands down.
The premise is intriguing and unfolds in some unexpected ways, too. I'm curious to see what comes of this "awakened" demon king, as his impact in the world seems to just be beginning in this novel!
Also, I loved the characters! They had distinct voices and unique roles in the story, even down to the side characters. I really resonated with Joseline as the soft but determined heroine and I loved that she learned to hold her own and spark friendship with some pretty tough characters. She had to struggle to find her place, but she never gave up. I loved Quinn. Every time we got more details about him, I ate them up! I also thought Jenson and Maya were awesome counterparts. I really liked reading about feisty Evalyn and her keeper, the very conflicted ex-pirate Dax. Their scenes felt more my speed, as I'm the kind of reader who loves emotional tension more than anything!
Where I was really hoping for more was in the pace of the book. Some scenes were really spot on, but the dialogue was often very obvious, telling me straightforwardly what was happening after I'd already picked up the clues. And while, yes, I loved the world so much, sometimes all the descriptions and history took away from the action.
When all is said and done, I can 1000% say I hope to be a fraction as good as Sydney Hawthorn in worldbuilding. It won't happen, though, but I can dream, right? She should be really proud of this place she created and the people she put in it!
Thanks to the author, Sydney, and Literary Bound Tours for providing me with a copy of "Awakening Shadows" in exchange for an honest review. And let me be honest: I loved this book!
I found it to be such an easy and beautiful read, I felt connected to the characters from the very first few chapters, Sydney's writing flows beautifuly and transports you right there in Navarre, traveling alongside Princess Joseline and her companions. The story is intriguing, the characters are funny and sassy and everything you could ask for.
My favourite character was definitely Quinn. From the first page where he appeared I knew I was going to like him and I was wrong. I didn't just like him, I LOVED HIM. I was rooting for him and Joseline to be together, of course. (Sydney please don't disappoint me, I NEED THIS).
Also, can we talk about the mysterious Evalyn and Dax? At first I didn't understand why they were introduced, but as I kept reading I started to understand some things and I have a few theories and I can't wait to read the next book and see if I was right. I didn't like Dax at first, but I ended up really liking him and starting to understand his motives. Also, I feel like Evalyn is going to be a huge part of the next book and I can't wait to see her journey.
That ENDING left me speechless, it was so abrupt and it definitely left me wanting more. I need the next book right now, because I can't wait to see what happens. I'm so excited to dive deeper into the Navarre Chronicles!
“𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦, her mind whispered. 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.
𝘐 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦 𝘮𝘦.”
What an exhilarating, engrossing little first installment in what is sure to be an EPIC new fantasy series—Awakening Shadows sucked me in and the pages flew by until that insane cliffhanger on the very last page...How am I going to survive until book 2?! Why oh WHY did you do this to me, Sydney?! So.damn.GOOD.
The worldbuilding is intricate and rich but not overwhelming, which reminded me of Morgan Rhodes’ Falling Kingdoms series which I adore! The flawless chemistry between friends and lovers alike—along with badass warriors, magic wielders, and Fae characters—was reminiscent of SJ Maas’ style that I love so much. I could immediately tell throughout this book that Hawthorn is EXTREMELY well read in her genre, something I greatly admire and appreciate in a fantasy author.
What was most fascinating to me about this book was this feeling that the two main plot lines demonstrated a masterful blending of both the NA and YA genres. On the one hand, we’ve got the dark, tragic romance of Evalyn and Dax; on the other, we’ve got a more action-packed, journey/quest of magical/warrior friends. I am SO looking forward to seeing how these storylines and characters will ultimately collide in future installments. Sydney, I am here for the long haul—bring on Navarre Chronicles book 2!!
This cover is what drew me to this book, it is so gorgeous! I also have a bit of weakness for books with royalty and magic! This book was a great introduction to this world and wonderful start to this series. Often with fantasy books there is a point where it feels a bit info-dumpy or the characters are giving us a history lesson, but the world building was woven into the story and flowed seamlessly. It did take me a while to get use to all the POVs we have a few main characters POVs and them glimpses of other people's perspectives, and it took me a while to remember who everyone was!
I think for me my favourite part of this book was the characters and the relationship development across all the characters. There is such a range of personal development for these characters as well as complex relationships which develop through this book. I am loved following Princess Joseline, Quinns, Evelyn and Dax as they went of personal journeys of discovery as well as growing closer to each other and growing together.
Amazing debut book and look forward to seeing where this author goes next!
A STUNNING debut by indie author Sydney Hawthorn, Awakening Shadows is a fantastic fantasy read that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I’m usually skeptical when I start the first book in a long series because very rarely does a series hold my full attention, but Hawthorn is a master at keeping you turning the pages. Not to mention her characters — Quinn and Joselyn’s sexual tension is one of my favorite things, and I would love to convince Evalyn to share Dax with me... 😇 If you’re looking for a fantasy read with an immersive world, snarky cast of diverse characters, and monsters that will give you all the chills, Awakening Shadows is for you!
Free review copy provided by the author, all opinions are my own.

This book has a great premise (creepy demon king, demons are always good) and interesting characters with incredible interpersonal dynamics but the story feels like the very poorly written skeleton of so many basic fantasy books and is lacking in flesh and anything to make it unique or intriguing. I could not focus while reading. If you prefer character driven books you may still enjoy this but I just could not force myself to continue reading.
“Your past doesn’t define you, Maya. Having a hard past only makes the friendships you do create more meaningful.” -Awakening Shadows, Sydney Hawthorn
First off, thanks to the author @sydneysbookshelf and BOMM Tours @bookofmatchesmedia for sending me an eARC 💜
It’s a quick read that is definitely spell binding from the get go. It’s definitely fast paced, with a certain flair for weaving different magical elements. We get short chapters with multiple POVs and some really interesting characters that I wanna know more of. I want more Joseline and Quinn content! And Evalyn just made me want to be a part of her life!
One thing that I did want more of was the world building. I think I would appreciate the story more if only we have more details about the kingdoms and the world as a whole. And being a sucker for a tale with a good world building is also something that immediately gets me hooked and obsessed with my reads (so this might be just me 😅).
Overall, this is a really promising start to a series and I’m definitely looking forward to the sequel 🤩
Awakening Shadows is good for my health lol. It inspired me in so many ways and prompted me to lead a better life. I learned that showing your emotions and expressing yourself is okay, and there is nothing wrong with opening up. Not only this book improved my mentality, it also motivated me to write, regardless of my age and skills. Awakening Shadows has an amazing world-building, well-built characters, and a carefully woven plot. They drew me into the story, and I felt like I was trapped in the pages themselves. Sydney's writing style is understandable and flowy, and I simply adore the prose so much! It was a pleasure to read AS and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
What a great start to a series! The world that has been created here is just so rich and amazing.
There are 4 main characters in this story with 2 storylines that I guarantee will come together in the end. I didn't think the two storylines in this book took away from each other, I loved both and couldn't wait to find out what was happening in each of them. The 4 main characters, Joseline, Quinn, Evalyn and Dax were all really intriguing and as mentioned before I wanted to know what was going on with each of them. If you have read Falling Kingdoms I really feel this has a similar feel with the POV's and storylines.
I really enjoyed this book and just need more asap because it was so good. Everyone needs to go and read this book!
I devoured Awakening Shdows by Sydney Hawthorn. I read it in two days because, I couldn’t put it down. It reminds me of the Throne of Glass series mixed with hints of Game of Thrones (which is funny because I don’t remember it mentioning a throne 😂) The story is told from multiple perspectives. It took me a few chapters to get use to the multiple perspectives because there are so many characters. Once I figured out who everyone was, it was easy to follow along. However, I found the chapters from Julia’s perspective a little dull, and every time I read one of her chapters, I found myself wanting to jump back to the other stories. Luckily they were far and few in between. I loved the chapters from Evalyn’s perspective the most. She is a compelling character, and I can’t wait to see what happens next in her story. The characters were extremely well written. Each character was unique in personality and dialogue. Sometimes when a book has a lotof characters, I feel like their dialogue start to sound similar. AS did not have this issue. Over all I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait to continue this series.
