Bring Me Edelweiss

Rate this book
It’s more than a culture clash when an American tourist meets a Special Forces soldier at the British Museum.

Joel McIntyre’s life is going nowhere, fast. Since breaking up with his ex he’s oversleeping and always late. To top it all off now he’s in danger of losing his job.

All he wants to do is enjoy his European vacation with his family. He has no time for romance. But a missed flight and a layover at Heathrow with a handsome soldier upends his life.

After returning home for the first time in years, Freddie d’Pierrepont finds that it is a mixed bag. And when his brother reveals he’s ill, the familial pressure really mounts.

Having a vacation fling was one thing, but you don’t just turn your life upside-down for a guy you met on holiday. Especially when you’re keeping a royal secret.

Can Joel and Freddie excavate true love from the ruins of their complicated lives?

I read this book, smiling the entire time. I found myself eager to get back to it, and frustrated when I had to put it down. I was completely in love with both boys early on, and all I wanted was for them to work this impossible situation out.

So much fun, start to finish.

This is everything you could want in a romantic comedy.

My first book in 21 was a sweet and nice read. I enjoyed the story of Frederick the crown prince and Joel the American waiter.
The kingdom of Etreustein supposedly is located quite near where I live, can't believe I've never been ;-)
Those guys were interesting and loveable, even if their love for each other was a little too fast for my liking.
And all in all the book could have been shorter, in between it dragged a little bit. What I liked was the lack of unnecessary relationship drama, even if those guys had problems, it was not exaggerated and without big misunderstandings.
So overall this was a nice 3.5 stars read for me.

It's the second book I read by this author and I'm glad to see some positive women characters here. In fact there were a bit too many secondary characters. I generally liked the story, even though it was slightly predictable. It is set in an invented European microstate, a monarchy. Some aspects were a bit unbelievable .

BTW I live in Switzerland and I'm active in solidarity movement: the idea of anti-migrant protesters blocking Geneva airport is quite unlikely, especially because the French speaking part of Switzerland is more progressive than the rest of the country on this and other social matters.

Welcome to the European microstate of 'Generica' a place which make no sense, filled with generic stock characters who are so bland and generic that you forget who the hell they are - are they in England? Are they in Switzerland? Are they in the real world? probably not! So, the story goes like this, Ginger haired former British soldier (who is really a crowned prince, which makes no real sense as to why a crowned prince of 'Generica' would be serving in active combat for the British army - the logistical and diplomatic problems would be prohibitive) falls for an American... insert generic Lifetime movie script here... and they live generically ever after. There is even a disabled sister and a machiavellian villain*

* I am sure that the whole plot for this book has been taken for one of those generic LIfetime/Hallmark Christmas movies; but they all melt into one**

** Generic- just because.

Bring Me Edelweiss (Five points 2)
By Kyle Baxter

Four stars

“But I thought French was the language of love.” She raised a sharp finger. ”Only to the French.”

This is silly. But not too silly. Silly enough. Sort of a gay “Princess Diaries,” but with shooting and explosions. Oh, and handsome men. It was just what this holiday season called for, and Kyle Baxter’s two main characters—Freddie d’Pierrepont and Joel McIntyre—are easy to love.

Europe seems to be full of absurd little countries that appear when we need a convenient prince to toss into a rom-com salad. Major props to Baxter for creating complications that offer up enough pathos to make you cry, as well as humor to cause plenty of chuckles in the course of the reading. I confess that I’ve never seen two such well-muscled butch men giggle so much. Some might find that unbelievable, but it pushes the right buttons in me.

This is a solid, enjoyable, heart-warming romance with attractive and likeable heroes and no real bad guys.

while I enjoyed the second in the series, and loved getting some updates and more time with familiar faces from the first, this one didn't have the same spark for me. the characters are great, and I am a huge fan of open and honest discussions about mental health, I just didn't feel the same connection with Joel and Freddie that I had with Alex and David. I don't think 4 stars is fair - I would have gone 4.5 if I could have, but we aren't allowed to go halves. It's a really cute story and the tension and feelings between Freddie and Joel are palpable, and of course it has a HEA, so there's a overall ooey gooey feeling all around...

I’m Smiling From Ear to Ear… 💞💞💞‼️

As much as I cherished Book #1, “The Problem With Mistletoe”, due to the new protagonists, the continually unexpected surprises, coupled with all of the action, international locales and the seamlessly incorporative inclusion of Book #1’s characters, this was ALL that and that much more (also, I just can’t get ENOUGH of the cover art of this title which is 1000% , yes, 1000%, better than the “original” artwork of the first.
I had purchased ALL (6) of the original books plus the first of the spinoff series, which was actually the 6th of what was 7 books before the spinoff was created. That series now has a second book which actually has Freddie and Joel in their very own Gay Archeological Mystery storyline.
Love this (Five Points) series and am starting Book #3, “Mistletoe in the Marigny”, the moment I’m finished posting this review to Amazon, Goodreads and BookBub (now I just discovered that there’d been an audiobook to Book #1, “The Problem With Mistletoe”, all along. So I’ll grab that and listen to that why 📖 Book #3, “Mistletoe in the Marigny”…

Does love always come first? Would you sacrifice love for your duty, for your country, for your parents? These are the questions in this modern fairy tale for Frederic and Joel and once you start reading, the answers are not so easy to give any more.

Another mm love story from Kyle Baxter, the second book in the Five Points story but perfectly readable as a stand alone book.

It is another page turner, well written with well written likable and not so likable characters.
A cozy easy read which makes you happy but with some hard issues. Loneliness in a busy world, environmental issues, refugees, hunger even in rich societies and the fact that sometimes we all need a little help.

I still think about the first book sometimes and this one will also stay with me for a long time.

Just a personal note: I would love to have movie night with Robert.

Bring Me Edelweiss is a really funny book.

Sometimes life gets in the way and you just need to let your air down and enjoy yourself. This is what Joel decided to do after he missed his flight and a handsome British soldier comes along and turns his planned life upside down.

Freddie has not been home in some time. Unfortunately it wasn't during good family times. What was supposed to be a fling turned into something more. Clearly Freddie kept a few secrets close to the chest.

Throwing caution to the wind together for a vacation romance? Why not? Something long term? Who knows what develops between two people from different sides of the world.

A delightfully engaging read! I couldn't wait to get back to it each time I paused. Bring Me Edelweiss was romantic, suspenseful, and heartwarming. Kyle Baxter has a knack for creating believably real characters that the reader comes to love. From New York to London, a waiter, a soldier, and a prince fight to find love. Battling outside forces as well as inner demons, the characters draw you into their emotional journies. While commuting on New York subways, I read it, letting Mr. Baxter take me away from the mundane and into a dream come true. A delightful read!

A boy is going on vacation and he meets a handsome British soldier and decides to treat himself to an interesting vacation fling. And then it starts to feel like more. And then it turns out that the soldier is not just a soldier. Can they solve the very real differences in their lives to find common ground on which they can build a life? Delightful story!

My Recommendation: This is a 100% made for TV movie waiting to happen from the imaginary European country to the final scene where the friends help with the big reveal I love you moment on a rooftop in NYC that just happens to have been bought by said royalty, I am here for it. I would watch the shit out of this movie and honestly will probably come back to read this again next Christmas.

My Response: As promised, here's the next in the Christmas/Holiday MM romances :-D I read this one immediately after the first even though I had every intention of crossing at least one of my outstanding nonfiction ARCs off my list. I was smart after finishing this one and made myself finish a nonfiction before I got to read the third in this series!

As much as I enjoyed The Problem with Mistletoe , this one ramped up the cheese and I am here for it. It was less about Christmas than the first (and I'm assuming the last, Mistletoe in the Marigny), but between the super nerdy tall guy (Joel), the beefy veteran prince of a small European nation (Freddie) it worked for me.

Great series

I love the series. The stories are great romances and very light on the sex which I think always side tracks the story. One minor quibble about this story is that the spelling of Frederick goes back and forth with Fredrick. It could use a bit of proofreading. I recommend this book and the series.

I would happily award this superb novel 5-stars were it not for the unacceptable number of typos, mis placed modifiers, run-on sentences, etc. The editor and/or proofreader should be taken out and horse-whipped. Otherwise, Kyle Baxter's novel is one enjoyable read. Long live Joey and Freddie.

Another great work from Kyle Baxter!

Another great story from Kyle Baxter who writes in such a way that you feel you are living in the story. I couldn’t stop reading and at the close of this book feel sad that for a bit I’m leaving these characters until next time.

A real Ross Hunter production

Everything: crown princes, a kitchen wench, a king who refuses, art, charity: everything but torn bodices. Whew!
“Bring Me Edelweiss “ I thought was charming, Shultzie, romantic, read.
I feel as if I had just eaten an entire Black Forest cake.

Read both books in the Five Point Stories - each one at one sitting. Couldn't put them down! Excellent characters and, refreshingly, actual plot with substance as opposed to page after page of sex!

After listening to too many audiobooks full of dark crime and awful people, I found myself in a spot. So, I reached out to the Writing Community on Twitter (X, if ya' nasty) and asked for something sweet and hopeful to listen to for my next audiobook. Kyle Baxter delivered exactly what I needed!

I'd read the first book in this series, The Problem with Mistletoe, last year and enjoyed it very much. This second entry in the interconnected series was delightful as well. Sweet, fun, romantic, silly, and with a few harrowing thrills--it got me out of my dark crime slump.

Fans of Red, White, & Royal Blue will enjoy this novel. Fans of sweet M/M Romances that are own voices will adore it. From the meet-cute in the airport between the MCs, the near insta-love, the royal intrigue, loving family vibes, how the author dealt with mental health issues, a dash of spice, and the great cast of characters, there's a lot to enjoy in Bring Me Edelweiss!

Kyle Baxter is now my favorite author and I'm going to read his other books! Great writing! Wonderful, multi-dimensional, and realistic characters. Perfect pacing! I'm so glad I picked this book up.
