Three months have passed since the eccentric Hermit agreed to take Roy and Aika on as students. Now, the time has come for them to leave the forest and return to civilization. Neither Roy nor Aika know what to expect in the Itachi capital, but with their powerful teacher by their sides, they reluctantly agree to venture into the city. With all the time that has passed, they don't know how many powerful players are now on the board, nor the looming threat posed by a gathering of monstrous Beasts. The Sovereign of the Herald Clan has also learned that his son is alive and has ordered that he be returned by any means necessary.Roy faces many challenges, most of which Geon believes he will fail. The Dungeon is far from happy that Roy has yet to kill the people on his hit list, and he makes his displeasure known. Daily. The path to Green-Belt will not be an easy one, but if Roy wants to succeed in his ultimate goal, he will need to fight harder than ever before.

Another good one

I like how this is not one of those books where the overpowered hero walks around like an idiot to create tension. Instead our hero is the least powerful but fairly clever who just guts it out. Looking forward to the next one.

I'm really just tearing my way through these books. Decent LitRPG with a well thought out system, lots of intrigue and (possibly) a hint of romance to come. The pacing could be tightened up a bit. Some of the fight scenes seem interminable, but they end eventually. Rating and reviewing this series seems a bit pointless really, it's all just one big book split up into digestible chunks. And Goodreads tells me there's another 6 to go! Will I finish them? Who knows, but am giving it a bloody good try.

At least it’s better than the last one

In reality I’d rate this book as 2.5*s but since it was so much better than the last one I rounded up. So first off the editing is much bette than the last one. Not perfect mind you, but this book only had a fraction of the misspellings and wrong word usage that the last one did. Even better the author called the MC by the correct name through the whole book. Now for the issues:
The writing is still truly subpar. The books are written like they are the first book the author has ever written. The dialogue is poor, he spends way too much time describing things that don’t matter and not nearly enough on other things that do. I could go on, but next...
The largest issue and the last I’ll review. The MC is horrible. In any other story Toy would have been the one bit in half by the weird, random beast the served no purpose in the story. I’m currently going through a cultivation novel phase, and Roy is the worst MC by far. His drives are all twisted up in a way that makes no sense, he’s a whiner and a quitter. Everything he has to do is too hard and I want to quit, but I really want to be the strongest, and my reason for power is the I want to free the weak, by getting strong and killing a bunch of people that are weaker than me.
There are some good and original-ish ideas in the story, especially the 1st book, but the follow ones have not lived up to the potential. Here’s hoping that the author can it the story back on track.

Another awesome installment

So I’ve read a fair few books by this author now and still enjoying each and every new one . I tried to think why I like the style and flow of these books so much and why I find them so fun . Thinking about it I think it reminds me of growing up watching dragonball. Kind of a random comparison but hear me out

The power progression is there , the progressing through dangerous situations and life or death moments is there . The fight scenes are there “if only in words and not actual cartoons” the good and honourable fighters are there along with the ruthless villains and good guys . It’s got all the marks of a good anime along with being a really awesome book and fitting nicely into the fantasy scene . If it’s your first time trying this author then I suggest you get ready for a lot of time spent going through all his series and getting hooked .

This is not a self-contained book, if considering this book you should read the earlier ones in the series first, well worth doing since they are also very enjoyable too.

This latest instalment progresses both the plot and the main characters in a suitably interesting manner that will ensure that fans of the previous books enjoy this one too and if they are like me, have them looking forward to book four as well.

The performance of the narrator helps to bring the story to life with a tone that is both pleasant and sufficiently distinctive to handle the varied cast.

Overall, another strong entry in this series.

On series...

1st book pretty good, but author seems to just keep adding on so that anticipated events are delayed unnessarily. Author moves one charactor to another well in book 1 and 2, book 3...not so much.
I like the story so far but could be smoother charactor transitions and allow them to advance in power and skills in a balanced way. Alot less stopping and starting would help, and the whole unknown charactor introductions are just annoying. You stretched the last '15%' until I started to 'page-flip' read. Got really bored...all just for a green.
It will be some time before I am back...dang good story idea though.

Too many annoyances to name.

MC is pathetic. Always wining. Constantly repeating and reiterating story elements.

OH! And the MCs 'ideal' is to free the oppressed. To eradicate the idea of power makes right. AND how will he do this? I KNOW! I KNOW! He'll get really strong and use his 'might' to make what HE believes is 'right.' He's obviously a democrat ;)

Perhaps my BIGGEST gripe is that the MC is always fighting and ALWAYS getting distracted by inconsequential thoughts during his fight. Imagine being in a brawl, a simple fight that isn't even life-or-death, and you start thinking about what color your underwear is ONLY to be brought back from your thoughts by a fist in the face.

That's the kind of story you're getting.

Also, pain-is-pain. PEOPLE don't get used to pain. It's an absurd idea that just doesn't exist. For f's sake, people commit suicide when constant pain becomes unbearable. Yet these characters can go through months of torture, broken bones, burns, contusions, and any number of traumatic experiences but HEY, the overused refrain, "I've had worse." gets tossed in, so it's all good. I'm of a certainty that the author has NEVER had a broken rib, torn off a limb, been pummeled in the head, had his feet roasted in coals, been sliced open by ANYTHING, not alone ripped by claws....

AND why can't the stupid author keep track of his own characters ages?! One minute Roy is 16 and Aika is one year younger ... the next she's almost 20. WHAT? Oster tends to slop together writing and not even care what he's already written.

These are the complaints I have that make this and the other books ridiculous reads.

This story makes no sense. There isn't any plot. The main characters try to get stronger just to get stronger. When they are given training opportunities, admittedly dangerous ones, they always gripe about how hard it is and how they wish they could quit. For a cultivation novel the MC is super whiney and boring. It's sad when the best parts of the story are those without him. Other characters are especially stupid because they'll threaten people much more powerful, despite everyone blatantly wearing their rank out in public. The author is being lazy with this forced conflict when no one in the world would be so stupid. Finally, all of the characters remark on how the world is one where the strong thrive and the weak suffer. They remark upon this with it being the acceptable way the world works. However, when someone strong offends them they believe it is unjust. Wasted three books on this series and won't try a fourth. I don't think there even is a story here.

You can’t trust anyone with more power than you in this world.

And it is proven again and again as those more powerful do what they want with the lives of those weaker than them. Roy wants to change that for everyone as he grew up crippled and with no ability to sense or interact with Essence.
Sadly Hermit unwittingly leads Roy and Aika to the vipers den and then leaves after making a deal with his sister to save Roy. His sister has little regard for weaklings and throws them into the Trial of Water, expecting them to die. Until a tribal chief from the Crater shows up and enters the Trial to go after them.
In the end, Geon thinks Roy is weak, the world thinks Roy is weak, and no matter how hard Roy struggles, he cannot seem to break the cycle he is in but he keeps trying to…

getting so much better

I really like the relationship between roy and aika. It feels natural, all the while being very nice to see considering Roy’s background. They both also develop really nicely and are more fleshed out as individuals and together throughout this book as it’s mainly about their relationship. But our boy roy is also coming to understand how to use his strength and how strong he really have become. I love the progression of everything and old plot threads seem to be unraveling. Can’t wait for book 4. So glad I started late as I can binge.

Good stuff

While it has its slower and more annoying moments, the book is overall a very good one, nice pace and interesting story. It does feel a little short but it does a good job of maintaining a good flow throughout even when it switches perspective from one character to another it never feels too long and always adds to the whole instead of detracting from the reading experience. I recommend it, and look forward to the next one.

Action packed and you can follow the spiritual , personal, and physical growth. Really enjoying these books. Employing the speed and action to promote growth. Nothing comes easy but shows hard work, trial and error makes striving worthwhile.

Excellent insight could spend more time on personal growth. Young adults should enjoy. Teens who understand different gaming rules will really appreciate these books and so will older people

Great adventure

Roy's adventure takes some interesting turns in this third book and we meet new people as he moves into a new area. I'm looking forward to book four!

There are some grammatical issues and a few incorrect words, but the issues are rare and do not detract from the story. I wish Kindle had an easy way to provide feedback in the book, similar to highlighting.

Spot on

The best of buryoku so far. This book is better than the first two and that’s saying a lot considering they’re both very good. Another a fantastic instalment from Mr Oster. Don’t miss out!

Amazing!

I love this book, it’s the best one yet. I just wish it could go one longer 😭 I’m sad it had to end so soon. I’d gladly wait an additional six months if it made the book twice or three times as long

Bring on the next one.

I very much enjoyed the third book in this series. The character are growing and learning. I feel for Roy as his "path" seems to have much pain. Just when things seem better, they just get worse. Can't wait for the next one.

Low quality

This book was not up to par, the MC is a whiny child and the authors approach to this story sucks. I may check out the next one. I’m super disappointed I wanted this to be good.

Best one yet

This is probably my favorite entry in the series so far. The main character has become more likable with every book as he’s overcome his weaknesses and the power gains and breakthroughs in this book really felt earned. I recommend it!

As always Aaron continues to deliver fast paced, well thought out books. If I had to make one criticism, I would love to see the next book be longer.

Another enjoyable entry into the Buryoku series. Roy continues growing in power, this time spending part of the book training with Hermit, and the other inside a water dungeon.
