A classic of Scottish folklore. Over the course of a quarter of a century, the late R MacDonald Robertson assembled a collection of fascinating stories which will appeal to visitor and native alike. Headings include Fairies, Haunted Houses, Witchcraft, Monsters, The Highland Vision and Miscellaneous Tales. Every corner of the Scottish highlands and islands is steeped in ancient tale and legend; the author has produced a wide-ranging and representative selection.
This is one of those important little books we'll be glad got written down and printed and reprinted in 50 years time when all these stories would otherwise have been lost.
It's a shame they're not sorted or listed by geographical area. Though when it says Highland it means Highland, you'll no find stories from the lowlands in here. Which is sort of a shame, but so it goes.
I am Scottish born and bred and am familiar with many of the locations in the Highlands. The Gaelic language lends itself to the many tales and the author manages to convey the unique atmosphere of this area at a time when it was remote. Unfortuneately not so remote today with the ever increasing tourist trade.
