Vi and Jack have settled into London for the fall, and they want nothing more than an excess of cocoa, coffee, good books, and time with friends.
They should, however, know better. Jack is brought into consult on a case in coziest of houses. Only all is not what it seems and no one is surprised when they find yet another body.
Book TWENTY-FOUR in the Violet Carlyle Mysteries. Are you ready for the roaring twenties? You’ll love Vi, her patient husband Jack, her indulgent twin Vic, and their friends. For fans of Carola Dunn, Jacqueline Winspear, Georgette Heyer, and Lee Strauss. A light, cozy mystery with a fun peek into life in the life of a bright young thing. No swearing, graphic scenes, or cliffhangers.
I have been able to have a minor Vi binge as somehow I fell behind. And then I got 25 ahead and discovered with alarm I had lost the thread. So three books later, my own version of a lost week end. This one is the most before you read 25.
This was great—- like the earlier books in this series! Characters are all terrific and the “ extended family” of friends is growing larger— character interaction and conversation is a lot of fun. Different mystery with very unpleasant individuals— Jack and Hamm are unsympathetic to the miserable old woman who hires them! Story actually becomes quite intricate, with a surprise ending!
These books keep getting better. I love how they illustrate how many women were just property to men and the law allowed it. Women With money were targeted by unscrupulous men and used as bargaining chips by their own male relatives. You had to be a strong, smart woman back then to outmaneuver the despicable men around you. I enjoy reading books about intelligent women who are involved with men who appreciate and support them. Trying to determine who is the killer is always challenging and fun as well. Once you start reading the Violet Carlyle books you will be hooked!
Rita and Ham will always grieve their first loss. It eases, especially after other children are born, but that grief is consuming without support. The loss of an infant so early in the pregnancy is heartbreaking. It took me over four months to stop crying all the time; my sorrow turned me into a hover mom when my son was born twelve months later (I didn't realize I was pregnant again for a couple of months). Vi and her chosen family will help Rita and Ham.
This case was hinky. I guessed who the killer was as soon as we met with them. Truthfully, this was a chilling, gruesome murder.
I’ve read all of the Violet Carlyle mysteries. Miss Byers entertains us with this wonderful group of friends so we can follow their adventures, vacations and of course watch them solve murder after murder. If you enjoy the cozy mystery genre there are only a few authors who can immerse you better than Beth Byers. Should you be looking for other authors I suggest Sara Rosett, G G Vandagriff,Leigh Ann Dobbs to name a few. Feel free to leave a message and I’ll be happy to reply.
I'm sorry I can only give 5*s. You must read all previous books in this series to truly understand and enjoy this one. A real tear jerker I don't want to spoil the mystery but the entire time I was reading this installment Dionne Warwick's classic song kept playing in my head "That's what friends are for...." If you are a fan of this series this is a must. (Even the editing was better).
Dark and utterly depressing. I kept asking why the book was even written. The plot was not particularly in keeping with this series. The characters were all over the place. I suggest you skip this book altogether and go to the next one. I have always given the author very high marks in the past. I pains me to be so negative but I had no joy in reading this book.
In the 24th book of the series ( and yes, I have read them all!) We find cuckoo clocks, an heiress, a criminal and,of course, murder. A jazzy little mystery that will keep you guessing, and wonderful old friends that it's a joy to visit again! I truly adore this series. It makes me happy. I think everyone should read it,, because it is just that good 👍👍😊😊
Love this series! Yes, it it the 1920’s….and yes…the characters drink too much, party too much, may not take anything too seriously, get involved in police matters when they shouldn’t, and sometimes get hurt (no graphic violence). But, they are fun books to read, have witty conversations, have adorable babies and cute lovable dogs, and mysteries to solve. So, curl up in a comfy chair with a cuppa and join the fun. I already have the next one on my “to be read shelf”.
I have tears in my eyes from the ending of this book. Not from pain or despair, but from feeling the obvious love these wonderful characters have for each other. The plot is easily followed, the main and supporting characters are wonderful, and the story is as old as the human race. In this story the killer was caught and will be punished in the full extent of the law or so the reader hopes. I highly recommend this book.
Violet and the gang are together solving a case they initially don't care about. This is Byers' best after the last few lesser attempts. It's great to have Kate get the attention she's been lacking. Even though they appear frivolous at times Byers' has really shown how mature and compassionate they are when dealing with tragedy.
I love all the characters and their different personalities and how they love one another and stand up for each other. Whether solving a Murder or consoling each other over a loss. I’m even beginning to like Smith that has fallen in love with Beatrice. His polar opposite. Another Murder solved.
The villians are despicable, the crime(s) solved. The family of main characters adored by myself and each other. Glamorous dress, eats, digs, and relations in the roaring twenties! Already saved the date for the next installment.
Violet and the gang are back at home in London for September 1926, with an interesting murder and some real loss for the group of friends. Great entry in this addictive series. Currently available on Kindle Unlimited.
I love Vi and her hijinks! After reading this book you’ll want to plant a cherry tree or three and have a picnic! I can’t wait for the next adventure! I enjoyed every one of this series❤️❤️❤️
I really do love the Violet Carlyle mysteries. They make you laugh and they make you cry. This book is no exception. I didn't know who did it until the end. That is good enough for me.
A young girl is harassed by a lad who wants her. The young lad's grandmother wants to find him quickly and requests Smith's help. Meanwhile Rita has a fall and everyone gathers together. The lad has been found dead and the group hasten to find the killer!
Loved this story.Such a great mystery though Sad and heartbreaking in parts.Definitely twisted .Would love to have friends like the chosen family of friends in this story.😱💃🏻🧐😢😡
Keep me wondering "Who did it?" Till the very end. Sad to know things like this is really do happen. Violet and Rita did try to stay out of Jack's and Ham's case but as usual got sucked in. Which was in the case a good thing.
