Starting in this volume, this story proves that going your own way and defying standard expectations for how a series is supposed to work can lead to solid results. The overarching tale here is not an easy, rinse and repeat Hollywood style drive through lane. You have to work at it but you are rewarded for the time. Flowers moves deftly from one perspective to the next, taking great patience and deliberation to build an effective, powerful and often disturbing plot.
