The Cuban Revolution is among the most pivotal of revolutions in the 20th century, yet it is often very little understood. In order to understand the progress of revolutionary Cuba, one has to understand its origins. This book is comprehensive in scope, taking a look back at Cuba before the U.S. intervened on its behalf in the Spanish American war, then through the ensuing decades of corruption that ultimately led to Fidel Castro’s takeover. Here, we not only examine the events surrounding the Cuban Revolution of 1959, but also the personal motivating factors on all sides of the equation. From U.S. politicians to communist guerrillas, to Mafia-backed Batista, an awful lot of people had skin in the game when it came to Cuba. This book takes a look at all the factors that led to Castro’s uprising, and the means by which Castro and company navigated through the hardships, pitfalls, and hurdles laid in their path as much of the Western world conspired against them. Right or wrong, it is nothing short of remarkable that this revolution succeeded in the first place. Even now that Fidel Castro has passed, the Cuban Revolution in many ways is still unfolding. Here we examine the past, present, and future of the many phases and faces of Cuba’s revolution. This short-read book is a perfect introduction to the Cuban Revolution that you can easily read in an hour or less. 4.5 Stars This short book by Hourly History is intended to provide an overview of the Cuban Revolution that can be read in an hour. I listened to the Audible version, which came in at 1 hour and 5 minutes.
Since this book is intended as an hour long overview, it must be judged on that basis, not against a standard that could only be achieved via several more hours of reading. As an hour long overview, then, I give this book 4.5 stars. I found it to be interesting, well organized, and with sufficient emphasis on all the major players: Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro, and Che Guevara. I was even pleased to discover that the CIA’s involvement in the Cuban Revolution was touched upon and that this involvement was not ‘red, white and blue washed’.
In short, I received exactly what I had hoped for with this book and it made me more interested in learning more about the topic.
Also of note: the narrator on Audible was very good. Nice speaking voice and no annoying habits.
