Lovers' Lane #6

Taking My Doctor's Orders

Rate this book
I hate that prick of a doctor.
He’s supposed to deliver babies. Not break hearts.

Two years and six days. That’s how long it’s been since he broke mine.
Oh, that stormy afternoon after he told me we were done forever.
I got back to my apartment.
My stuff was everywhere. My life was a mess.
I couldn’t handle it.
And so, I left.
I ran as far away from him as I could. What I didn’t know was that I was taking a part of him with me.

Fast forward a year.
My son was born. The huge secret that resulted from that massive heartbreak.
Ryan deserved to know about his son. So, I did something crazy.
I upped and moved back to New York City. Without telling him.
And then I made an appointment for an exam. Ryan was my doctor.

And damn, he looked good. Life couldn’t be this cruel…
Could I ever get back together with my (secret) baby daddy?

This standalone is Ryan and Marie’s story! Get ready for a roller-coaster ride, a happily ever after, and no cliffhangers!

I didn't get too far into the book before the inconsistencies started to drive me crazy. The use of New York and NYC are interchanged. She said she drove her car to New York, that they were visiting his brother in NYC... but then two years later he's asking her to come back to New York? So were they visiting one of the Boroughs and lived somewhere else in the state, or were they from out-of-state? If so why is he still in New York after 2 years?

Also this chick keeps telling this man on a daily basis she loves him after 4 months and leaves him because he won't commit, I'd honestly be annoyed too and break up with her 😒 also if this man has been emailing you for 2 years non stop and you don't want to hear from him, block him, or get a new email and don't tell him, the same way you changed your number.

I also never like the whinny self-deprecating thing some women do in these types of books "Oh, he must date models or movie stars because he's sooo hot. I'm just not beautiful enough." Yeah, because only models and movie stars are hot. Also, I've known plenty of hot guys who never dated a model or a movie star. I 've only known one dude who dated and married a girl who was a model--just ONE guy from college in my 36 years of life--and he didn't date a bunch of models, he dated 1 and married her.

Anyhow, I'm probably too annoyed to keep reading at this moment even though I'm only a couple of pages into chapter 1, maybe later I'll finish it.

Wow!! This is my favorite of the series, and I love this series. We met Ryan and Marie in the last book. (Ryan is Cody’s Brother. Ryan, like his brother, spent way too many years as a playboy, avoiding relationships. He met Marie, a beautiful book nerd, and attempted a relationship. He still wasn’t mature enough to make a real commitment though.

Marie knew of his past, but fell hard and fast for him. She never felt she measured up, physically, to his “model type” woman he used to date. She started to become worried that he didn’t love her back. When she questioned him about his feelings, he couldn’t say “ I love you” back to her. She knew she couldn’t live that way, so she left him.

Their stories then pick up two years later, where we find out how much each one of them has changed. Ryan realized, the minute Marie left, that he was head over heels in love with her. He decides then and there, to become the man she deserves. He plans on winning her back somehow, someday. He’s tried to reach out to her, but she never responds. Marie has had a life altering experience also. She hasn’t told Ryan about it, but knows that one day, she needs to. What happens when they accidentally meet up again? Will they rekindle their romance or will she deny him the chance to show her how he’s changed?

I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

Book: Girl and Guy have been dating 4 months, Girl tells Guy "I love you" multiple times a day and Guy won't say it back, they have an argument and break up.

Me: Well, I would also be very uncomfortable with my significant other of 4 months insisting upon saying 'I love you' repeatedly every day when it's obvious I don't reciprocate those feelings yet. But that's just me.

Book: Guy regrets breakup immediately but Girl leaves town. Guy constantly sends messages to Girl until she changes her number and her inbox in full and won't accept any more emails. Girl responds a few times, but has basically gone no-contact.

Me: Stalking. This is called stalking and it's not romantic.

Book: Girl moves back with Guy's secret love child and makes an appointment with a gynecologist. Surprise - Guy is the doctor! He proceeds with the exam, making Girl obviously uncomfortable (she won't answer "how many sexual partners have you had in X years" and she declines a breast exam).

Me: No doctor would continue an exam (especially a freaking gynecological exam) once they realize they have a sexual history with their patient. You reassign them to a different physician or you reschedule them, you don't freaking continue because 'whelp I'm the only person available.'

This feels like wish fulfillment and I'm really not here for it. Pass.

A Growing Success In Love -
Ryan and Marie broke up when she realised he was emotionally stunted and wasn’t prepared for a committed relationship. Unfortunately, her life got complicated after she left, but she resolved to soldier on with her life. Ryan only realised his life was empty after Marie was gone and his efforts to get her back were unsuccessful. Fate stepped in and brought them back into each other’s lives, but it would take perseverance and determination for them to get their happily ever after.

The raw magnetism, undeniable attraction and sizzling chemistry between Ryan and Marie exudes great intensity and draws you in deep, until you feel the same need that will give you goosebumps. However, the most sentimental part of the story was Ryan’s positive reaction to being a father and accepting his part for why he lost out on being there for the first year of Remy’s life. This is a beautifully written story about second chances and a secret baby, which ultimately leads to a wonderful happily ever after. You will definitely enjoy reading this book and recommend it to your friends.

Ryan finally grows up! This is about Marie and Ryan. Oh I love this book – Marie was the geeky girl that loved Ryan so much that she had to finally make a decision and leave him because he was not committing like she wanted and he would only make fun of her because of her love to romance novels. Truth be told – he was miserable the moment she left, and it was all due to the fact that he did love her but was afraid to tell her. Well there is a surprise to this that Marie finds out a month after leaving him. She decides to move back to NYC in a house that needs a lot of work, but she is lucky because of her new neighbor, Jasper, who was the awesome part of the book. Adding someone like him won this book over for me… I loved that Marie finally stood her ground but also that Ryan finally grew up, took his career of being a doctor seriously and decided to go after her and be there for her only. He gave her the right prescription even if it made her laugh. The wedding with Serena and Cody was very touching.

Summer Brooks has done it again her books always make me laugh but yet have a touching story line to go along with them and Taking My Doctor’s Orders is just an added bonus to this series.
Ryan and Marie were in a relationship and she was crazy about him. She was committed whole heartedly but she didn’t feel like she met his standards. She was a little on the nerdy side because she loved reading and was somewhat of a hopeless romantic. Ryan was a playboy and use to usually go after the drop-dead gorgeous model type girls. Marie felt like Ryan was never gonna commit so she made the gut-wrenching decision to break it off and move away. Ryan tried to go on with his life but he never really got over Marie realizing he really did love her but couldn’t was too afraid to let his emotions show. Now 2 years later Marie is back in New York and has a few surprises/secrets. Has Ryan matured enough to win her back? Will he realize what he’s missed out on? ️ Summer throws in a new character who really is a bonus to this book!
I just loved this book it has all you want, some drama, laughs, some tender moments, lots of love and plenty of steam .All thoughts and opinions are all mine.

This is Marie and Ryan’s story. He was her everything, but he was not ready to open his heart to a committed relationship. So when they broke up, it shattered her and she left. She hadn’t known she was pregnant, but she didn’t go back to tell him. After being apart for 2 years, trying to heal, Marie is ready to deal with those feelings for Ryan and introduce him to his son he didn’t even know about yet.

Ryan regretted what had happened as soon as Marie left him 2 years ago. He has made changes in himself. Now he has to find her and prove to her he is not the same as he was. She can trust in his love for her.

A chance encounter brings these two back together. Ryan has to take responsibility for his part in losing those precious beginning years with his son. But he really does seem to understand this time. And their chemistry is absolutely sizzling. Will they give it another try now and make it work? Is Ryan ready to accept the love of his family and earn this second chance to be with them?

Another fabulous story from Summer Brooks! Loved the characters, the chemistry and the flow of this story. This story had lots of emotional scenes, moments that made me chuckle (that kitchen scene with Remy and the banana was just the best!) This story also had classy sex scenes, a sexy determined doctor and a heroine trying to protect her heart.....brilliant!!
If you haven't read this book or any books by this author, I recommend you start now, you'll love them!
Well done Summer....another great book!

Steam and angst and silliness. Oh my! There’s something really sweet and fun about this book that was able to overcome my natural skepticism of secret baby plots. I’m still not sure I fully believe in Ryan’s reactions to learning to the truth, but it didn’t stop me from loving these two (three?) together. I could so easily relate to Marie’s need for the words of love and all of her self-doubts. I loved that we got to see the grown-up version of ‘Ryan the Playboy’ that we had been introduced to in the previous book. And I absolutely adored the “grandparents”. These members of the supporting cast totally stole the show.

I have loved this entire series, and Summer finished it up perfectly. I have to say this one is close to being my favorite. This is a second chance at getting your true love back. Ryan wants to prove to Marie that he has changed and really does love her. Will she believe him and give him a second chance? I loved the banter between the characters and story. Baby Remy was so cute and I loved his copying. Marie’s parents and Ryan’s brother, Cody are freaking hilarious. I laughed a lot and cried a little. You need to read this entire series. If you read this first, you’ll want to read the others. I can’t wait to see what Summer comes up with next.

This is the 6th book in this series and is Ryan and Marie’s story. Ryan is the typical playboy who avoids relationships like the plague, and Marie never felt that she shaped up to any of his ex’s, and when she wanted him to commit to her he is unable to express his feelings, so Marie leaves. Now 2-years later they accidentally meet again, and Ryan is determined to become the man Marie wants him to be, but is he prepared for a secret to come to light? This is a well written story which is filled with drama, heartbreak, secrets, and love and is a humorous and steamy read. I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend for all.

A second chance romance with a secret baby

This a sweet , emotional and steamy story involving 2 young people who profoundly love each other. Saying the right words is what kept them apart for about two years. A coincidence has them finding each other again; did they change? Ryan said to Marie that he did and he wants her back real bad; let's just say that Ryan is very persevering !!
Great text with strong characters, lotsa sexiness and not much drama.
I loved this book and highly recommen it !!

Again I loved this story!
I’m soooo glad Ryan and Marie got their own story.
We already met them in Cody’s story but this one was awesome.
Ryan is the playboy who realizes too late that he already had the jackpot when Marie left him.
Now he gets a second chance and grabs it with both hands.
He is so sweet and loveable.
Marie is shy and fierce all in the same time!
Remy, their son, is a sweetheart and hilarious with the bananas.
You must read this story!

This books was so enjoyable because it starts out at the with Ryan and Marie at the lowest of lows. You can’t help but get swoony over Ryan and his devotion to correcting the past. You have to love how Marie realizes her worth and won’t settle for less than she deserves.

This book is not like a lot of other second chance books in that Ryan and Marie never really had to sort out their feelings for each other, just if they were right together as a couple and a family.

What a great read that I really enjoyed! This is a seconds chance romance that I just fell in love with. Loved the characters, the story line was attention grabbing, and it was an all around great read.

This is book 6 of the Lovers Lane series, but each book can be read as a stand alone. I have only read 3 books in this series so far, and out of order but it was still very easy to follow along. I need to go back and read the others in the series because I have enjoyed what I have read so far.

Would she give her baby daddy a second chance?...
I'm not one to tell the story which in any event has been outlined in the blurb & previous reviews. For me a good story draws me in fairly quickly, I fall in love with the characters, warts & all. I sometimes want to give them a good talking to or to slap some sense into them but above all I need to feel invested, I want some heat & I'm a sucker for a happy ending. This ticked all the boxes. I received an arc & this is my honest & voluntary review.

Ryan and Marie were in a relationship and she loved him but he couldn't tell her the same so they broke up. When Ryan realized that he did love her it was too late because she packed up everything and left only to find out she was pregnant. These two go through so much in this book and it makes them getting a HEA that much sweeter. This is a second chance love story that is well written with characters that have hot chemistry and are destined to be together. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Can he take his own orders?

Taking My Doctor's Orders is the sixth book in the Lovers' Lane series and is like cotton candy - sweet, sticky and not filling. The story of Marie and Ryan was definitely not filling but if you need something light and fun in between reading darker and heavier then this book might just be what you need. Their story is low angst and drama (well there is a bit but not bite your nails), is funny, charming and there is a very cute baby boy, along with one big grown man-baby.

I received a copy of this book for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

Way too many inaccuracies

I wanted to like to this book but I can’t stand when a writer doesn’t get basic information correct in their own book. For example Marie says he dad dies 5 years ago and then the next chapter she is on the phone with her mom and dad. Next is when Jasper says his son died in combat then when it’s mentioned again he says he died from a car accident. Also, Marie was wearing glasses at the Dr appt but then it’s mentioned that she was wearing contacts. I gave up reading after that.

This entire series has blown me away and this book is no exception. Taking My Doctor's Orders is a lighthearted romantic story of a second chance with a baby surprise. I enjoyed this story as there was not a lot of drama, just the characters wanting to be better for the ones they love. I laughed as Ryan and Marie interacting with their families the reactions was fun and heart warming.

This is a book that when you pick it up you do not want to put down.

Ryan and Marie had previous history. Ryan had women coming on to him frequently, he never responded to the offers, but he enjoyed flerting with them. When Maria expressed he tri feelings to him, he didn't respond back. Marie felt he was not all in the relationship as she was, so she left. Ryan spent years working on himself so he can get her back.
This story made me think these were college student instead of mature adults in their thirties. If the story was written in a more mature environment, I would have enjoyed more.

Didn't like any of the characters apart from Jasper. For me, it is one of those books that tries too hard... I didn't find it funny, I am not actually sure where it is supposed to sit genre-wise. I thought that Ryan was a dick. I think it shows how shallow he is that he can't even be bothered to learn the names of the people who work with him... not endearing... just shows how important he thinks that he is. Maybe I shouldn't have read this... but I did.

What happened with the mole on Remy's thigh? Thought that Marie was really worried about it... and it was never mentioned again...

Sixth in the Lover's Lane series, this was a fun addition to the series.
This is a follow-up to the previous book Dating My Sworn Enemy. In that book Marie and Ryan are introduced in the beginning and Ryan's brother Cody warns him that if Ryan doesn't straighten up his act, he'll lose Marie. And by the end of the book, Ryan has lost Marie.
This book tells the story of the breakup and their reconciliation.

Marie and Ryan really were a great couple once they got their act together. This story had all the drama and tension that goes with a story of this type. The will they wont they, push pull that goes along in the relationship. It was very well written and I enjoyed it very much especially when the news broke, and the fact he came to the party was well done. A fantastic book!

I love this series! A well written, entertaining, captivating, engaging, exciting, and emotionally deep second chance romance. There is drama, ups and downs, and is guaranteed to hold your interest from start to finish. The characters you will root for; there is a beautiful dynamic and sizzling chemistry between them. Quite enjoyable and strongly recommended!

Not my cup of tea

Maybe I should read the previous book to have some more background to the story.
I didn’t feel invested in the whole redemption of bad boy. It was very little about his previous antics. The story felt too predictable and repetitive. I started to have a toothache and began to skim trough, then there was the long sex scene and didn’t feel invested. I would like more twist or angst. The story was too sweet for my taste.

I grabbed up this book from reading the synopsis, unfortunately this wasn't a book that I can give a good rating to. The storyline seemed to be a good plot, but the writing made it unbelievable. There were many times it felt amateur and rushed in order to reach the heated scenes. The monologs seemed farfetched. I think this book had a great idea, it just was executed poorly. Real life people don't act like these two.
