Once the movie is available online, I can't wait to watch it. Regarding this book, it's as endearing as ever. The bonding process is going well, and there are lots of adorable moments. But the suspense is killing me.
Urara applies for a table at a comics festival, so now she has a deadline for her first original comic. Can she get it done in time? Ichinoi is there to cheer lead and support in every way she can (finding a printer, sewing a table cloth, agreeing to work the table, packing their lunches) but only Urara can get the comic done. This book contained one of my very favorite exchanges of the whole series, when Ichinoi asked "Is it fun to draw manga?" and Urara responded honestly, "No. It's hard to look at my own art for so long. But it feels like I'm doing what I should be doing."
The teenage girl and her elderly friend get ready to attend a comic convention. It's a slight improvement over the stagnancy of last volume as some actual motion in the plot lets us move toward the finale at a slightly faster pace.
Not much happening in this volume. I love that Urara continues to work on her first manga, and Ichinoi is helping Urara to sell it. And I found it cute when Ichinoi buys her first-ever smartphone.
HAD to binge Vol. 4 & 5 back to back here because there was no way I could rest until I knew how it all ended! This series is so SO lovely and soft and bittersweet in the best ways :3
It’s so lowkey, but there’s an undercurrent of emotional turmoil. Urara is trying to do what she wants but does she actually want it? The yearning and confusion of being a teenager is so well done. And Ichinoi continues to be the most wholesome old lady and I would totally be her friend.
Oh, I really liked this volume. It feels as if we're building up to not only the act of putting out a doujinshi, but also to a step in self-realization. Without changing the pace, the intensity definitely stepped up a notch!
I loved volumes 1 and 2, and unfortunately volumes 3 and 4 have fallen flat for me in comparison. I still like Ichinoi and Urara a lot, and their interactions are what make this manga enjoyable. Love the premise, love the vibes.
But I think the main issue I'm having is the pacing. I feel like the story has solid leads, introduces interesting side characters, and has an interesting plot with Urara wanting to draw her own manga. But-- and I say this as a person who enjoys slice-of-life-- the pacing feels so slow. Considering there is only 1 volume left, will there be time to flesh out and develop everything that's been set up?
The main plot with Urara feels like its dragging and to be honest had me kinda bored, and I also feel like Ichinoi doesn't have that much to do in this volume. Furthermore, a lot of panels are used up on the side characters, who I like for the most part but also wonder if their stories will pay off or will ultimately just distract from the main story.
Urara is finally exhibiting her manga, though it’s not going that well. The push-pull of her emotions feels very authentic, as does Ichinoi’s earnest helpfulness. Love these characters.
This volume gets really exciting, as both the main characters go outside their comfort zones to try new things. I love seeing the two collaborate to help Urara’s manga get made. I particularly enjoyed the parallel storyline showing that Komeda (the published manga author in the story) goes through the same kind of internal struggles in writing that Urara does. Great stuff!
Kind of annoyed by how the story keeps going around in circles. The chapter count isn't really justified when you look at how little character development and plot progression there's been. Also, the selling point of the series is their friendship yet they're not even that close. They've known each other for months now and Urara still doesn't tell Ichinoi anything.
This manga is just the best. And the perfect level of Japanese to just read at a normal pace (for me), too! I'd go on reading about these characters forever.
***Finished on April 1*** ⭐3.5 rounded up I am flying through this series today. It's easy to read, to understand and to continue on with. Still no idea how it could end.
I do have to say that that 13.99 dollars for one volume is highway robbery. It's not what I paid but I'm outraged nonetheless. *sigh* Maybe I should freshen up my German reading skills. They are almost none-existent though....
***Read for the 30 in 30 Manga Challenge*** Runs from Friday April 1 to Saturday April 30
It's a bit embarrassing to admit but I have way too many unread manga on my shelves. I say it’s embarrassing because unlike my fiction books I feel like manga isn’t too much of a time-commitment. So having series complete, but only the first volume is read, is not okay in my bookish world.
So doing this will hopefully knock some series off my TBR shelves.
I felt this was a better volume than the last. Our two lead characters were actually together in this one and the story works when they are together.
The young girl is finally writing her first BL Manga. She rented a booth at another BL convention and she is putting her work out there. The Senior lady is sitting with her helping to sell her manga.
The last volume will show us what happens at the convention. We see that she is set up to sell her Manga when the volume ends.
The volume seems quick and not full of a whole lot of content. This paints a general picture. They also didn't talk about BL much here and it was fun to hear them discuss it.
Anyway, there are plenty of threads to be picked up here, so it will be interesting to see how this ends.
