I'm giving this four stars not for craftsmanship, structure, or innovative writing, but because it met a need for me, which was to hear a native American overview of their culture and history.
The language is direct, pleading, and transparent in its aims.
Sun Bear obviously wants readers to feel a certain way about his people, so he doesn't muse about complexities, anomalies, or apparent contradictions. He pleads his case and invites others to his side. I'm thankful for this intense and focused introduction to a neglected side of the history of this continent.
Buffalo Hearts by Sun Bear An anthropological look at america native culture during the 1970's with native american eyes. This book is an interesting look at cultural perception. Sun Bear, shows a lot of personal pride in sharing his view of the Native culture. Although he highlights some areas of the culture, he has a tenancy to brush-over some parts going for the Noble Savage ideology that came out in early anthropological research.
