“This book is filled with solid, practical advice to defeat anxiety, based on scientifically backed techniques and years of clinical experience.” ― Helen Odessky, PsyD , author of Stop Anxiety from Stopping You
Many of the available resources for managing anxiety are based on opinion rather than science. Dr. Craig April, founder of The April Center for Anxiety Attack Management, relies on the latter. By employing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), he helps readers overcome fear for the anxiety relief they desire.
Stop being anxious for nothing. Assuming the role of victim when it comes to anxiety can make us feel trapped and convince us that we have no control in getting better. However, Dr. April has found that in most of its forms, anxiety is not a mental health disorder. In fact, anxiety relief begins by facing our fears. Using a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to anxiety, Dr. April takes CBT techniques and tackles anxiety at the false fear messages.
Dare to overcome fear. Fear is a factor in all lives, whether we feel it plays a significant role in controlling us or not. Lucky for us, it is also something that can be faced. By recognizing anxiety as a result of false fear messages, we become better equipped to manage it. An expert in  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety relief, Dr. April uses over twenty years of experience to help readers face their fears and overcome their anxiety.

"17 hours is the average amount of time required for the brain to adapt to a particular fear."
So, this book was a short read but an important one. I've always loved understanding more of the way my brain works, and this did just that. It's not groundbreaking but it's a good starting point.

"The Anxiety Getaway: How to Outsmart Your Brain's False Fear Messages and Claim Your Calm Using CBT Techniques," by Craig April, is a short, useful nonfiction book for anyone interested in learning more about anxiety.

I've never had a panic attack, but I've certainly woken up in the middle of the night with anxiety, mine driven from a mortgage I inherited from my uncle in 2012. Debt anxiety plagues my unconscious mind, and can wake me up in a sense of panic from a dead sleep.

This book isn't focused on lived/experiential burdens in life that are causing people anxiety (such as anxiety about unpaid bills and their harsh consequences, like homelessness for nonworking adults, or stuff like domestic violence, or anxiety from trauma/PTSD). This book is focused on examining irrational phobias (phobias not caused by trauma), and other topics, such as why people develop Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, the truth about agoraphobia, and other such stuff.

I would need a different kind of book to "outsmart" my own fear messages, and the author says as much at the beginning of the book.

But for what this is, it's a useful and educational book. Fairly repetitive, and not as directly applicable to myself as I would have liked. But still good.

I'm glad I had a chance to check it out.

Five stars.

This book was a recommendation from a colleague. I don't actually remember who it was or if he/she already read it (if I remember correctly they just recently found it and recommended it to me).

I gave it a shot so here we are.

Firstly, this book is a continuous repetition. Some may argue that repetition is key to learning but it just seemed too much that about halfway I got fed up and it was making reading more boring.

It also tries to be funny and succeeds maybe 10% of the time. Maybe our (my and the author's) sense of humor is just so different. Or maybe it was because, like I said, I already got fed up and was just trying to finish the book for the sake of finishing it.

I feel anxious from time to time but I don't think this book was intended for me. Maybe this book would really help those suffering from the mentioned symptoms and it's good for them. I especially do not like reading "claim your calm" for some reason. It sounds so pretentious to me. But, again, maybe it is something those who can be helped by this book can fully appreciate.

Maybe this kind of book just isn't for me.

A Treasure!

The Book is a “MUST HAVE”: The Intelligently written treatise is an Important & Understandable addition to the literature on Anxiety. Talk about timing, one can’t expect to read a more helpful book at this time with the lingering of the coronavirus, black lives matter, & DACA, etc. Included in the book are easy to understand and easy to use strategies that are relevant, workable, and meaningful. It is notable that Dr. April understands the difficulty of the undertaking; thus, providing suggestions for easing into the recommended process to suggesting more difficult remedies. Also, I believe it is an important book for those who desire to assist someone other than oneself who experiences anxiety. Understanding another’s quest may simply be your gift to that person or person. Simply, enjoy this worthwhile educational read.

I had the pleasure of listening to this book via audio, although the information provided to decrease/get rid of false messages was beneficial some of the stories/examples provided were a bit strange to me. Definitely will try the exposure technique and recommend it to others.

Stuff I've read before but excellent to give myself a kick up the bum to actually practice exposure therapy properly and stop avoiding it!
