Calicut Regional Engineering later renamed as National Institute of Technology Calicut is the premier engineering college which started functioning in 1961. From its humble beginning in the campus of West Hill Government Polytechnic, this institution has grown as one of the best among the NITs in India. The author of this book joined CREC as an Associate Lecturer in 1969 and has superannuated from NITC in 2011. The author has seen the worst and recent best in this institution. This book tries to give the history of the great institution of learning through his eyes. Prof. Achyuthan, who was one of the first teachers in CREC, in his introduction to this book says :" Even though this college has completed 58 years in its service to the people, no one has written or published an authentic history of the developments in the college. Prof.K.P.Mohandas who has joined the department of Electrical engineering REC in 1969 and has served the institution creditably for the last 42 years is trying to fill this gap. This book is arranged in two parts, and covers most of the important developments and incidents in the college systematically during this period." He continues further :"He has discussed in detail major incidents like Rajan case, Ragging etc. Something on the ‘better days’ of REC, in his own eyes, also has been presented. Brief description about his short foreign assignments has been included. The latter part is on the transition from REC to NIT and the major changes that have happened in the academic and administrative set up in the institution. The capacity for keen observation owned by Dr.Mohandas is clearly seen in his narration. His simple straight forward style of telling things makes it eminently readable. Further, I hope, this book will prove a handy reading material for those who are interested in knowing more about this institution, its history and its development. Congratulations to Mohandas for this unique effort. "
