I hired her to distract my enemy. Now I'm determined to have her for my own.
I’m Maxon Reed—real estate mogul, shark, asshole. If a deal isn’t high profile and big money, I pass. Now that I’ve found the property of a lifetime, I’m jumping. But one tenacious bastard stands between me and success—my brother. I’ll need one hell of a devious ploy to distract cynical Griff. Then fate drops a luscious redhead in my lap who’s just his type.
Sassy Keeley Kent accepts my challenge to learn how to become Griff’s perfect girlfriend. But somewhere between the makeover and the witty conversation, I’m having trouble resisting her. The quirky dreamer is everything I usually don’t tolerate. But she’s beyond charming. I more than want her; I’m desperate to own her. I’m not even sure how drastic I’m willing to get to make her mine—but I’m about to find out.
Shayla Black is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and historical romances. Her books have sold millions of copies and been published in a dozen languages.
As an only child, Shayla occupied herself by daydreaming, much to the chagrin of her teachers. In college, she found her love for reading and started pursuing a publishing career. Though she graduated with a degree in Marketing/Advertising and embarked on a stint in corporate America, her heart was with her stories and characters, so she left her pantyhose and power suits behind.
Shayla currently lives in North Texas with her wonderfully supportive husband, her daughter, and two spoiled tabbies. In her “free” time, she enjoys reality TV, gaming, and listening to an eclectic blend of music.

My life motto is more like: Forgive and forget? I'm neither Jesus nor do I have Alzheimer's.
My poor rating doesn’t apply to the writing, it was really good. I rate and review the story, or better said the moral of the story.
I really enjoyed this book till approx. 50 %. The whole book was written from male POV and I loved it! The author saved me from reading about how the h desperately craved the H, how attractive he was, how she wanted to lick his abs and and and – can you feel me? ;-) It’s better to read about H’s feelings and desire; and in this case he was smitten with her and completely under her spell.
I liked the heroine and admired how she “rejected” the hero, how cool she was. The hero was not that bad, I had almost no complains about him.
I understood and fully supported that he wanted to take vengeance on his brother -> PoS!!!
But after the half of the book the story took the direction I didn’t see coming and didn’t like.
The story is a romance but its also a really complicated and messy family drama.
Maxon and his brother Griffin used to be best friends. They were also the dream team of realty. Until Griffin decides to shack up with Maxon's ex-fiance (days after their break up) and starts a competitive realty business without any reason or explanation.
With a lucrative deal on the line, Maxon is ready to pull on the stops to finally win one over on his traitor of a brother. Enter Keeley, a fun vivacious free spirit that has the looks guaranteed to turn Griff's mind away from business and straight to play instead. Thus insuring Maxon the advantage.
What he doesn't plan on is that Keeley isn't a perfect distraction for Griffin, but she is for Maxon.
I think I was able to hang in there til the end because it was an audio book. I think if I had to read the book I probably would have not finished. It had a lot of running around in circles and for every one step forward, the H took two back up until the very end. The twist at the end about Keeley being a lame double agent playing Maxon to get him and her friend Griffin back in each other's life was unexpected and unwelcome. After that reveal I didn't really like her anymore.
I also really hated Griffin. This guy is absolutely NOT redeemable. His excuse for betraying his brother and his supposed love of his life (Britta) and their baby was so weak and not even very believable. The fact that he is a liar, a cheat and such a gullible loser has killed any chance of this guy ever being book boyfriend material. I hated his POS father too but Griffin was a new level of douche bag. I feel bad for poor Britta. It's safe to say I won't be reading any more of these books.
Memorable Moment: This was more a personal moment for me ... I thought I would hate Maxon because he was seriously a cocky bastard at the start of this book and not gonna lie, he keeps it up for a big portion of the story but (and I surprised myself here) he does grow from his mistakes and although this will not be a re-read, in the end it wasn't a total loss. (It helps that there were bigger a$$holes in the book than the H.)
Would I recommend? Although the writing style was good (told first person, through the H's POV) it's not my favorite trope and it was a little too "Days of Our Lives" with all the drama and cheating and soap opera vibes.
SAFETY INFO: Ages: (Can't remember exact years but) Keeley is in her mid to late 20s (I want to say 25) and Maxon is in his 30s. (at least 32-35)
Cheating : Cheating galore (but not between MCs) - Maxon's fiance and his younger brother Griffin - Maxon's father with his fiance -Maxon's married father and a lot of OW throughout H's childhood
No OTT description but the father's infidelity shapes the character's cynical views of romance and his brother's betrayal is constantly brought up and discussed throughout the book.
OM/OW drama : Yes. I won't try to explain because this is a very complicate and convoluted plot but there is self made drama (between the h and the H's brother) and there is very real drama between the brother and his ex, Brita)
Separation: Yes, of a few weeks. No mention of OP while separated.
Push/Pull : Yes again. From both sides.
Main Pursuer of relationship : Mutual by both MCs.
Possible Triggers : Cheating, lying by omission and reformed manwhore H.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Shayla Black’s writing style and was over the moon excited to hear that she was going to write a contemporary romance series! Ms. Black started her More Than Words series with a fun, sexy, intriguing romance that I could not put down!
Maxon is a hotheaded, sexy, competitive, stubborn and sexy real estate mogul. His goal is to continue to be the top luxury real estate agent. His biggest competition, his estranged brother Griff and Griff is closing in on taking the title from Max. When competing to list the same property Max comes up with a sure fire plan to prevent Griff from winning the listing. At the center of this plan is Keeley, Max hires her to distract Griff from his business, since Griff loves the ladies Max is convinced all he has to do is give Keeley some tips on how to catch Griff’s attention and hold it. Easy, peasey, right? Until Max realizing he might have an issues with his plan because he is falling for Keeley.
Keeley is sweet, funny, caring and the kind of person you just can’t help but like. She’s totally the opposite of Max, Max is the kind of person you want to junk kick upon first meeting him. The chemistry between these two totally opposite people is combustible, the back and forth banter witty and totally entertaining, their secrets big and their love undeniable. I loved how their story unfolded and literally could not put this book down. Now I’m impatiently waiting for book two, so I can once again be in Ms. Black’s More Than Words world!
If you are looking for a book with flawed but lovable characters, super sexy times, emotions and a little bit of angst one click More Than Want now!
Shayla Black delivers once again with this passionate and sexy story set in the paradise of Maui. Maxon Reed is a major handful, driven by work, greed, and an unwavering determination to best his estranged brother in the competitive luxury real estate market. Keeley "Sunshine" Kent, the beautiful songbird who catches his eye, couldn't be more different. Their journey to finding common ground and true happiness is anything but simple. The path is littered with old wounds, far away dreams, and a plan for revenge that could solve everything or rip them apart.
A beautiful love story with a twist that you'll never see coming! Highly recommend!
I started this series out of order with book 3 and I've loved how fiercely protective Maxon has been of Keeley. I just had to come back to book 1 and read their beginning. I will admit, I was a bit nervous because they kept emphasizing how he almost lost her and that had my imagination running wild. The reality was much better.
Maxon was pretty smitten right from the start. I never doubted his feelings for Keeley and that's what I love to see. It helps that the book is mainly in his POV. Keeley was harder for me to like. She was too sweet but also too self righteous. For a woman so young, she really thought she knew what was best for everyone else.
I liked the little twist at the end. I liked this more with that added surprise. Now I really need to get to book 2 cause I have no idea how Griff is going to fix what he did to Britta.
I own the kindle book but I really wanted to listen to the audio book so I borrowed this on the Audible Romance Package. The narrator was pretty great. I highly recommend the audiobook.

Synopsis: A fresh, sexy and emotional contemporary romance series by Shayla Black...
Sassy College senior Keeley Kent accepts my challenge to learn how to become Griff’s perfect girlfriend.
My Thoughts: This is the first time I have read this author and it won’t be my last. This book takes place in one of my favorite places on earth, Maui, Hawaii. I absolutely adored the setting. I also loved that music was involved. I love when the authors provide play lists for their books.
This book had a very alpha career driven hero, and when you find out about his family, you will discover what drives him. The thing is, under all that bravado is a man who has deep feelings that he was never taught how to express and apply them. My heart hurt for him, but he had to learn the hard way.
Keeley is the opposite of Maxon. She is lighthearted and a free spirit. When he asks what she wants out of life, she says, I just want to be happy. He couldn’t comprehend that answer. He wanted money, he wanted a title, he wanted to be the best and here was this beautiful, quirky woman who aspired to just be happy. She of course had the dream to own her own B&B once she graduated from college. She wasn’t afraid of hard work. She worked as a yoga instructor at a senior center, she ha been a waitress, went to college, worked as a receptionist and was quite a talented singer. She also had the great ability to ask the tough questions when the conversation got deep. She was able to connect with Maxon and really get him to think about his life.
This book had all the feels and it had a twist that I didn’t see coming! I was getting that burning in my chest a few times, as the characters went through their issues and I wanted to cry a couple of times because I was so caught up in their emotions. Their romance is a whirlwind, but the connection they have is soul deep and they both feel it right from the start. Keeley was definitely more in tuned with her feelings and it took Maxon a bit to catch up, but when he did, he jumped all in.
I highly recommend this emotional and sexy opposites attract romance!
ARC kindly provided by Once Upon an Alpha for an honest review.
Shayla Black started this series with a bang. Just like in past series, she makes characters complex that have you cursing them in one minute and cheering for them the next. She also gave us a cast of people that work perfectly in this story. The main characters are Maxon and Keeley. But there is also Britta who assists Maxon with his business but she is also his brother's ex-girlfriend. And she also had his nephew. Rob also works with Maxon but he is driven by success and is cutthroat about it.
Maxon is everything that he is billed to be. He is an asshole and I have to say that I didn't care for him too much in the beginning. His main goal is to be number one and he pretends to not care how he gets there. He doesn't want his brother Griff to take that title from him. But there is more to Maxon and he has to find his own road to forgiveness.
I loved Keeley from the very beginning. She was sunshine. I loved her personality and that her main goal was to be happy. I also really liked that fact that she thought that was everyone's goal. She really is a glass is half full type of person. It really had me wishing I could be more like her.
More Than Want You takes you on an emotional journey of what happens to a family when competition is prized above everything. Maxon and Giff's father is the real asshole and it drives these brothers apart. Keeley is the exact opposite of Maxon but somehow they fit perfectly together. I could really tell the musical influences in this story. Keeley loves to sing but she sings what she is feeling in the moment. This series started strong and now I can't wait for Griff's story.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
OH WOW! I am on CLOUD NINE right now, you guys! When I learned of a brand new series from one of my all time favorite authors, I about FREAKED the FREAK OUT! Shayla Black has ALWAYS brought me to my happy place, no matter what genre she was writing in, and MORE THAN WANT YOU, book one in the sexy new MORE THAN WORDS series, is just another example of that. This is a fresh and exciting new romantic escape that I never wanted to end. Maxon Reed, charming as he was infuriating, completely stole my heart! Get ready for some major SWOONAGE to occur ladies.
"Keeley, sunshine...Tell me you want this. That you want me."
Oh boy, Maxon and Keeley's story was NOT what I expected. It was, however, SO MUCH MORE! It has great characters, insane sexual chemistry, hilarious and flirtatious banter, and a plot that thickens the more read on. In this story, you lay witness to a stubborn gorgeous man being brought to his knees in every possible way, by a beautiful, charming, and unique woman. As their story progresses, you will fall more and more in love with the chemistry between these two. Everything about this romance had me grinning from ear to ear. A brilliant start to a sexy new series, MORE THAN WANT YOU set the tone for what's to come, and I couldn't be MORE excited to have a first row seat to it all!
Freakin' loved this book! This book had everything i love in a book. Angsty yet light hearted, I absolutely adored the main characters. So glad i found this author, I can't wait to binge through her books.
I can't remember the last time i read a book that had warm fuzzies going all over my body from connecting with the characters as i did. The first in her new series from Shayla Black, More Than Want You made me think of a mix of 'She's All That' (the movie) and another that i can't remember (bad me for that one, but i know i've seen it more times than i can count) about a boy and a girl coming up with a plan to trick another person for their own gain... oh wait!!! I remember the movie!! It's What's Your Number. BUT, and there is a big but, Shayla Black makes it even better by throwing the spin that i'm not sure i could have imagined. Instead of the girl doing it for all the wrong reasons, she does it for the right ones. To bring a family back together after an event tore them apart and destroyed any chances of being able to reconcile.
4.5 sexy dreams
Maxon Reed doesn't apologize for the way that he is. He's an a--hole, driven and mostly result driven to get the biggest payout, and when he meets Keely Kent when she sings at the bar that he was drinking with his coworkers, he knew right then that he had the perfect payback to derail his brother. Ask her to seduce him. Only Keely has other ideas, especially when she finds out what's happening, she can't help but want to bring them together and put the past where it belongs - in the past. I liked this book, i truly did. It had the good feelings that i love getting when i read, it had the angsty drama that i couldn't help crave, but most of all, it was new from what i've come to read from Shayla Black, something that i haven't had a chance to read from her before. Knowing that there is another book in this series, especially Griff's story is making me more excited (than i'm sure i should be) because let's face it, i need to see the other brother crumble as much as Maxon did.
Okay I will admit it, I read this series out of order so I sort of knew what to expect going into this book but not totally so there were still some big revelations.
I LOVE Keeley and I knew I would because I really liked her in the other books I read, but, this story shines a light on her that makes me LOOOOOVE her even more!
It's hard when family doesn't talk to one another and it's even harder when you have been deceived by someone you blindly trusted which is the case for Maxon. My heart broke for him.
Shayla Black not only writes steamy stories that make you hot under the collar she writes stories that pull at your heartstrings and this one is no different. Keeley and Maxon will have you rooting for them right from the beginning. The narration is done by Christian Fox and he did a wonderful job with bringing this steamy story to life. Happy Reading or Listening whichever you prefer I promise you wont be disappointed!!!
This is the second thing tried by this writer, and just think her style doesn't work for me. I just can't connect to her characters. It just feels anemic, and the sexy parts aren't interesting enough to engage me even on an Alexa Riley level. DNF'd.
More Than Want You is filled with plenty of heartache, passion and surprises. I wasn't initially a fan of the story but it quickly grew on me.
"Invest in your heart for once. Fall in love. Care about someone who can love you back. Worry less about closing the deal and open yourself to someone who can share your life. Or you're going to wind up bitter."
Maxon Reed, real estate mogul and all-around jerk is looking to distract his brother, Griff, from winning over potential clients. He and Griff had a huge falling out over a misunderstanding and now instead of working together they are battling each other to the end. Maxon finds the one person who will be the perfect distraction, Keeley 'Sunshine' Kent. After spending a night with Keeley in his bed, he presents his offer for her services to distract Griff and after much thought Keeley accepts but on her conditions.
What Maxon hadn't expected was that he would fall for Keeley and soon would have to decide between having a relationship with Keeley or screwing Griff.
At the beginning of the story Maxon comes off as a total prick. He puts revenge and business above all else. I was doubtful that Maxon would be able to redeem himself. He does at the end but I wasn't 100% feeling it. Keeley has a huge heart and a huge secret. Her secret left me conflicted. Over all the story is well written and emotionally exhausting. 4 Stars!
Wow. Once again, Shayla knocks me on my ass with an amazing story and amazing characters. So many twists and turns in this book, it continued to have me second guessing everything I thought I’d figured out about the plot and where I thought it was heading, just as I thought I’d worked it out, BAM! Shayla throws me another twist.
Maxon - The lead male character in this plot is everything I look for in a book boyfriend. He’s alpha, dominant, closed off, and driven to succeed, and a pretty big asshole at times but behind all this is a man struggling with his own demons and his constant need and determination to prove to his father that he is worthy. The determination so powerful that it clouded what was really important. I couldn’t help but feel for this man. Growing up not being taught how to express his feelings which causes him to be a closed off man, hiding behind a past full of emotional torment and shame. Afraid of letting someone knock down the wall he’s put up.
Keeley - The lead female in this plot. She’s absolutely gorgeous. She’s a confident, strong willed, and minded, free spirited and just adorable character with a massive heart, she’s caring, loving and kind. It was hard not to fall in love with her. She was everything and more that Maxon needed.
The two of them together were captivating and to read the way she tried to help Maxon and forced him to face and over come his demons, his overwhelming resentment and anger towards his brother and this emotional torment he’s lived with for so long was an emotional ride, yet a beautiful one. I absolutely loved this love story and it’s unlike anything I’ve read before.
Shayla is mastered at what she does. Her detail to characters is incredible, she has a way of pulling you in so deep that you get so invested in the storyline and you can’t help but frantically sit there and turn page by page wanting to know each and every little detail. I almost felt as though I wasn’t just reading this plot, I was living it and every time I took a break or had to put the book down, I would continuously keep thinking about the story. I could feel that Shayla put all her emotions into this story, it’s evident and in my opinion, it makes me love this book even more. I’m a massive fan of Shaylas’, I have been for a while now and just like the rest of her work, this was phenomenal and I can’t wait to start book two and see what she has in store for Griffins’ and Brittas’ story!
I highly recommend this book, it’s full of passion, love, pain, angst, drama and everything else in between and will keep you on your toes all the way through.
This was Shayla Black's attempt to do a book from the hero's POV. I'm here to report that it didn't work.
The premise was actually pretty good - centered on the feud between two brothers - but there was one big problem with the execution: everything was completely one-sided. The hero was the only one with issues to overcome. The heroine was painted as being perfect - although I wished somebody would have called her out on her hypocrisy that even though she presented herself as "revolted" with the scheme, she kept saying yes!!
Three things I enjoyed: 1) the setting in Hawaii with people actually living there (instead of being on vacation), 2) the premise revolving about the hero's work in the high-end real estate market (which I found super interesting) and 3) the twist at the end. I didn't see that coming.
Overall though, very uneven book. Not recommended, even with the scrumptious narration by Christian Fox (what a voice!)
The first book in the More Than Words series is a gripping read that captivates readers. Mason and Keeley are two strong, dynamic characters that easily grab readers’ attentions and their romance is sweet at times and full of sizzling magnetic chemistry. Maxon and Keeley are lovable, complex characters and their relationship is full of scorching hot passion that heats up the pages but it is also a bit complex as it features an unusual twist with the male having an agenda that he is consumed by, one that is completely blocking his heart which keeps the emotional turmoil high throughout this story.
The plot is steady paced and flows smoothly from beginning to end and the story is intriguing holding readers captive throughout as they wonder whether this couple will ever reach a happily ever after. With a couple of surprising twists that readers won’t see coming and character stubbornness ruling this relationship, this romance is quite an enjoyable read and since the author once again spins a wonderful tale full of fascinating characters and complex character interactions, readers can easily become caught up in the story. This romance is a standalone story but readers will definitely want to come back for more than the words of this series.
Love, LOve, LOVE More Than Want You by Shayla Black. History first. Before 2012 I rarely read a romance book. Murder, mysteries, and suspense genres were my go-to reading entertainment. In 2012 I received a romance book, loved it, searched online for more, joined an author’s discussion page, found a wonderful group of women who shared books they love with me. One woman directed me to Book Bash in Orlando where I met Shayla then fell in love with her writing. Book Bash was my first ever author signing event. I didn’t know many of the authors and didn’t have a clue about signing etiquette.
Up to that point, I hadn't read one of Shayla’s books. I was confident that she had superb writing skills because her line was long, and the ladies anxiously waited to get arms full of her books signed. So, I joined the line, and when my turn came to meet Mrs. Black mentioned I hadn’t read any of her books yet but I want to. Then I asked, what would she recommend as my first. The man at her table (who I later found out is Mr. Black) without hesitation said Wicked Ties. Jumping forward to 2018, I now have all the Wicked Lovers books, the Shayla/Lexi collaborations, and a few standalone novels. A couple of months ago the More Than Words series called to me. Initially, I planned to wait for all the books to release before reading about the Reed family. I couldn’t wait any longer hence…
More Than Want You is a good fun-to-read romance novel. It has a first-rate hero, Maxon Reed who is stubborn, sexy, man with commitment phobia and a dark family history. That’s all I need to know he will be a fantastic book boyfriend. It isn’t a surprise that Shayla makes me feel the emotions of the characters. Maxon’s anger with his brother. His hurt at the hands of his father. His love for Keeley. It all bubbles out of the story into my heart. Keeley’s disappointment hurts too.
Keeley Kent is a gem. Keeley reminds me of a New Ager. Her yoga and meditation allow her to enjoy life without needing the expensive things to do it. I love the way she helps Maxon to look at life differently. He has everything money can buy, but he doesn’t appreciate his surroundings. He doesn’t enjoy the view from his window or walks on the beach or music.
Music is an integral part of Keeley’s life and the story. Every time a song is mentioned I jumped to YouTube to listen to the version in the book. Shayla does an excellent job of using music to match the mood of the scene. I highlighted every song to create a Shayla playlist.
I can’t wait to find out more about the ancillary characters. Griffin (Griff) Reed, Britta Stone, Harlow Reed, and the senior Reeds. They all must have backstories that need to get down on paper. My only complaint, something I hope happens at some point in the series, is needing to see Rob fired. I believe Max should boot him. Max needs to put him in his place stronger than he did in my opinion. Max’s father, Barclay Reed is the character you will love to hate. He is the absolute worst father ever. I mentally punched him where it hurts for Max.
Shayla Black tells a very plausible story of the rich and powerful with More Than Want You. Max's point of view reveals the story except for one chapter in Keeley's pov. There is so much jealousy that the brothers are set up to bicker and lose sight of their love for each other. The character development with a little fall back to old behavior is authentic. I love the twist at the end and the setup for book 2 of the More Than Words series, More Than Need You. More Than Want You is a must-read romance novel that is pure joy.
Audio 5 STARS
After reading More Than Want You, and hearing Shayla Black talk about Christian Fox. I purchased the audiobook to begin the story again. Let me tell you it is worth the money or using your Audible credit. Christian Fox does an excellent job narrating this story. Ninety-nine percent of the time I read a book before getting the audio version. I like to use my imagination without the influence of a narrator to transport me to the story’s world initially. When I get the audio, it is because I like the story and plan to listen to the audio more than once. A good audio will add to my mind’s vision of the story’s events and sometimes gives me a different perspective on the characters and their thought processes.
Christian Fox’s performance is as addictive an experience as the book. He absolutely nails the performance. I love listening to Maxon tell his story through Christian. At one point in the story Barclay (Max’s father) and Maxon have a heated conversation. Barclay’s words thrown at Maxon hurt. The hurt hit me hard in the gut from Christian’s delivery.
Christian does an excellent job bringing Shayla Black’s tale to life. Maxon is so alive. His joy, pain, confusion, etc. are so real. Even the chapter from Keeley’s point of view is well done. I stay in the story from beginning to end. I highly recommend this audio book. It is marked as a favorite in my audio library that I will listen to again and again. Love it!
The book was not easy for me to read. I stopped reading it at least 4 times before the 30% mark and I forced myself to finish it. It got better over time, but I still wanted to kill Maxon for wanting Keeley to sleep with Griffing around the 75% mark. I didn't like Maxon at all and Keeley was the only sunshine in the book, no pun intended. The story is told entirely from Maxon's point of view, which was weird at first, but I got used to it. Keeley was one of the few parts that I liked when it comes to this book. Britta too and my heart when to her and her son. I was expecting more from the hero of the novel, but he was very unromantic, 'till the last moment and I did not like it.
Something is drawing me to read Griffin and Britta's story, but I know that I will like it even less than I liked this one, so I intend to skip it and go for book 3 instead. I liked Britta, but from the short excerpt in the back of this book I knew I wouldn't like Griffin, his manwhore-ish ways and him practically wanting Britta to have been a nun for the last 3 years. Also, she already has a man, so we might even have cheating.
While I usually love Shayla Black's writing, this book lacked some things and I didn't enjoy it. It had some good twists and turns that saved the book and some situations, but when you can't like the person who is telling the story, how can you like the story they say?
PS. When I had to add a headline to my Amazon review, I wrote "Hero not really in love with the heroine", because how can you be in love with someone if you ask them to sleep with someone else? (and I am not talking about some kink of sorts or a three-way)
Maxon is this take no prisoners business man who wants the deal of a lifetime. The only thing standing in his way is his brother Griff. So how can he get Griff to back off so that he will be one who gets the deal...
So when he's eye catches Keeley Sunshine Kent who is the total opposite of him he started making a plan. But maybe he can have a one night stand with her and then use her to distract his brother. What he didn't count on was the amazing chemistry they would share. But he doesn't need this in his life, his life is complete, isn't it??
So will he be able to let her go and carry out his plan or will his own feelings get in the way.
Maxon is a total jerk, but what I loved about this story is how Keeley brings him out of his own comfort zone. She gets him to see that there is more to life than the constant need for success and money and even though he is more about revenge on his brother and the need for success he might just surprise you in the end.
"I can't be with someone who wants revenge more than they want me."
FINAL DECISION: If you allow yourself to get over Maxon being a major jerk, this book is a wonderful journey for his character. He learns what is really important in his life. His relationship with Keeley is rough and imperfect and finally wonderful.
THE STORY: Maxon Reed is a man on a mission -- to get a deal from his estranged brother. Maxon is willing to do just about anything -- including finding a woman to distract his brother. When Maxon meets Keeley Kent and there is an instant attraction between them and he knows that she is perfect for his plan. After convincing the reluctant Keeley to give his plan a change, Maxon spends weeks tutoring Keeley in exactly how to appeal to his brother. The problem is that every moment they spend together brings Maxon closer to realizing that Keeley is perfect for him. But will Maxon give up his plan of revenge in order to get the girl himself?
OPINION: I don't mind heroes who are jerks in the beginning of a romance book as long as they don't end up that way. Maxon is a world class jerk (though his brother has him beat). Intensely competitive with his estranged brother, Maxon clearly has no morals about using people (despite his belief that he does). His competition with his brother is primary -- before friends, before love, before anything and everything. The good news is that this book just throws Maxon's world into disarray. It never goes where he plans. And he ends the book a better person who is capable of love.
Keeley is almost the opposite of Maxon. Altruistic, emotional, willing to help and do anything for those she cares about. I like how she operates as Maxon's guide and conscience in many ways. While we get a bit from her point of view, the book is really about Maxon's journey (because he is the one who really needs the help). Keeley is more of a free spirit than the career driven Maxon, but she is also happier.
The relationship between Maxon and Keeley is complicated by Maxon's own inability to understand what he wants and needs and how to get there. I enjoyed seeing Maxon breaking down. He has a nasty background which doesn't excuse his behavior but makes it more understandable. The focus in this book is really on Maxon getting himself right and how his relationship with Keeley is the catalyst for that.
I enjoyed this book more as I got into it (Maxon was hard to like at first). By the end of the book, however, I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
WORTH MENTIONING: This book also introduces the romance that is the subject of the second book in the series.
CONNECTED BOOKS: MORE THAN WANT YOU is the first book in the More Than Words series.
This book started out really rough for me It was single POV from the hero and to say he's a giant douche canoe is an understatement. Maxim is a successful real estate agent who will do anything for a deal even cut his brother out of his life. I kept picturing him as a slick aggressively manscaped dudebro that wears way too much hair gel 🤢. Almost DNF'd and the only reason I kept going is because the narrator is so amazing so I began to imagine him as Ryan Gosling from Stupid Crazy Love instead and that helped a lot 🔥 I'm glad I persevered because holy plot twists! Also, it starts out as insta lust and then turns into a slow burn and while I am still side eyeing the heroine's actions at the end which I can't spoil here, I thought the hero's character arc was well done. Needed more groveling though.
Tropes: Insta lust Lovers to Friends to lovers 🤣 Grovel
Maxon - A cut throat, alpha, millionaire realtor in Hawaii
Keeley - A karaoke singing, artist, dreamer who lives just for today and believes in forever love
As we watch Maxon struggle to get past his childhood drama and the harshness of his parents, we get to watch how the "sunshine" of Keeley can transform a broken man.
This story was fun, hot, steamy, happy, sad, and frustrating all at the same time.
If you need a fun easy read full of some steamy sexy time and goosebump feels: grab this one!
Another fantastic romance hit from Shayla Black! Whenever I read a SB book, I am transported to a beautiful plot, fabulous characters and delicious chemistry –With this brand new series , everything that I love and want from previous SB books is present and let me say, this is a awesome book and this is a fantastic and fresh new series one of my favorite authors. MORE THAN WANT YOU , book 1 in the More than Words series is set in Hawaii. Maxon Reed is a sexy and handsome man who is definitely a handful. He has become driven by greed, driven by work and this need to beat his estranged brother Griff, in the high price and luxury real estate market. One night Maxon meets College senior Keeley "Sunshine" Kent at a bar where she was singing. She is different from all the other women he has dated or lusted after. Something about her calls to him and he decides she would be perfect to distract his brother in this upcoming high priced real-estate deal which will help him best his brother. Then he ends up sleeping with Keeley. Plans change and somewhere along the line Maxon is the one having a hard time resisting her. Keeley is so different from Maxon- she is a free spirit. She is light, she is air –she is joy to Maxon’s dark and stormy countenance—they are definite opposite attract types but they do connect and oh do they—Keeley helped Maxon change from the bitter and angry man to a man any woman would be proud to be with. But there are secrets, there are things that take this story from one level to a whole other level. More Than Want You is phenomenal in its writing and the layers that are there. There are several stories going on at one time. The main one is Keeley and Maxon’s—be prepared for the twists and turns this story will take and make sure to grab plenty of tissues, keep a bottle of wine and chocolates handy and oh yes, get ready for Griff’s story next. I loved this book, LOVED LOVED LOVED this story. Maxon was a hard man but as I read his back story to how he got this way, well, I wanted to hug both of them. SB has done it again and has brought me such pleasure in her books, this was such pleasure –now I cannot wait for Griff’s story!!! My rating: 4.8 stars **** "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***
This was way more heartfelt and emotional than I expected it to be. I have read this author before so I thought I knew what to expect but I was definitely taken by surprise. Sure there was heat, a whole lot of serious chemistry but it was also flirty and character heavy.
Maxon is a highly successful real-estate agent on the verge of more success but his brother is standing in his way. A brother who he has a whole lot of bad blood with. The key to keep his brother off his game? Find a distraction. Keeley is a bit of everything. She doesn't take life too seriously, doesn't really have a plan but she sure does catch the eye of Maxon Reed. All good stories start with this one night in a bar...
Maxon is a smooth talker who gets more than he bargained for with Keeley. She is supposed to be his secret weapon but turns into something more. They become something more, but time is money and old wounds die hard and then things get a little complicated.
This book was really enjoyable, the characters where well developed and the setting well established. There was also the side characters that make you want to know what is going to happen next.
