The Controllers #1

Taking Control

Rate this book
There is a war, and people with skills are deployed when and where it suits the cause. Even Omegas.
Where necessary, they are allocated protection.
A controller.
And they are told to submit fully to the controller. That it is recommended.
But the war brings many changes. Omegas must be protected at all costs and what was once a recommendation might soon become a mandate.
Eloise is an Omega, and with her first deployment imminent she has already decided that she won’t submit to full control—not while the law still protects her.
But they haven’t allocated her to an ordinary controller, they’ve let the best of them fight for the right. And nothing is going to stop the one who comes out on top from claiming his prize.

This was a unique take on the omegaverse trope and I really enjoyed the premise of every omega needing a "Controller," although I do wish that process and the reasons for it had been just a little more well explained. Also, I found the romance to be a bit one-sided...Logan just didn't seem to have as much buy-in as Eloise need (although having already read book two in which they make a cameo appearance, I felt it then).

Regardless, enjoyed this and already read book two.

I am so torn doing this review.

I’ll be honest, I almost quit reading at around 49%, I just couldn’t connect with the story or the characters. To quote the female MC, “I felt numb and a little lost.”

But the last third sort of got better and was more enjoyable.

The first half of the book, the story seemed to take second place to the sex. Don't get me wrong, I love these books for that very reason but...I need there to be a really good story to go along with it.

ELOUISE
Elouise is a little omega with a particular gift. She seems to be an empath, as she can pick up the emotions of the people she touches and also those nearby.

They didn’t always have dynamics until a virus was set loose and pretty much turned the whole planet upside down. Now they have Omegas, Alphas and Betas.

Some of the Omegas have these additional gifts and therefore are useful to the government for missions etc.

However, it is believed that these omegas need controllers for each mission and in order for them to be effective controllers, the omega is encouraged to “invest”.

Investing basically means having sex with the alphas (or in some case betas) and allowing them to 100% dominate the little omegas. They then use a variety of spanking, fucking and neck grabbing in order to control their every move and thought.

Elouise seems to be a very mousy and unsure character. To me, it seems like she’s not only shy but lacks personality. She seems to have no will power of her own through most of the book and turns into a marshmallow every time Logan grabs her neck.

There were a LOT of times where she “didn’t know what she was asking for”, both in the bedroom and out. I just felt that the dialogue was a little off and it didn’t always make sense, almost as if they weren’t having the same conversation sometimes.

LOGAN
Logan was okay I suppose. I still can’t get a decent picture of him in my head. He also seems to be missing a bit of personality. Mostly muscle and dick, lol. Which, if I’m being honest, isn’t always a bad thing!
Most of the story was in Elouise’s POV but there were a few chapters from Logan’s view and to be honest, I feel that it was much better written that way. I wish more of it had been from his POV.

For a military man on a mission, all he thought about was screwing and dominating the omega and very little of anything else.

He was constantly feeling the need to punish her even when she hadn’t done anything wrong, I was confused at a few points because I couldn’t figure out what she had done “wrong”.

Shaking his head slowly, he leaned down and whispered in my ear. “I’m going to need to punish you for that.” Was he joking?

“You need a punishment now, or you’ll never settle,”

SEX SCENES
The sex scenes were mostly without passion for me I’m afraid. The best one was when Logan lost a bit of his control and let loose.
It seemed kind of senseless and very little emotion or passion behind it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a little rough and tumble...a touch of the old BDSM but there has to be a bit of a build-up some sexual tension, ye ken?

In saying that, it wasn’t all bad,

“I need—hard. I need to not think,” I whispered. He nodded once, and I thought he saw far too much, but then his eyes darkened, and he rammed deep with a feral snarl. I came up off of the bed, back arching. “My pleasure,” he said, pulling out and slamming back in. There was no gentleness. It was hard, brutal and steeped in a dominance so brilliant I wanted to pray to it.

FINAL THOUGHTS on TAKING CONTROL by L V Lane
The story did get better the further along it got. When new characters were introduced I started to enjoy it much more. It was labelled as dark but in my opinion, it wasn’t really.

I kind of missed the knotting and estrous too.

In the end, I almost wanted to read the next book in the series. Almost…

Sorry to all of you out there that loved this book, and I know there were many of you, but I can only give it

2.5 Stars.

New series that was teased to be a “unique” take on the Omniverse world, and to be fair… it is. The govt. released a virus that made some humans genetically change to Alphas, Betas, and different types of Omegas. The Omegas are naturally submissive so they need alphas to be tasks as their “controllers”. There are 7, short-ish standalone books in the series, but some characters are in the other books.

Alpha's and Omega's are naturally drawn to each other, but have the choice to “invest” which means fucking to establish a stronger bond. This part wasn't really explained, so I'm fuzzy on the advantages of investing. The entire plot revolves around the military and going on missions, not estras, slick, knotting, or making babies. In fact, bc was never mentioned nor pregnancy. (that I saw, but I did skim) I got the impression that she would just move on to another “controller” and mission, so there’s no real mating going on like we see in others. There’re tons of spanking and sexy-time, especially the first half. The problem for me was the lack of any real plot, and little world building. This “mission” is not really anything, and is over very quickly. The ending wasn’t explained AT ALL, and came out of left field. I suppose you can consider it a HEA, but we have no clue what their future will look like.

Bottom Line- I don’t like to rate new authors, and this is the first book, so she probably hasn’t found her flow. The writing was pretty solid; the “bones” of the plot were interesting, and the sex is pretty hot from a smut POV. For me, the issue was all about plot and character development. There’s stuff going on; it’s just not explained very well. Eloise’s ideals, and plan for the mission was hinted, but never really explained. I was super confused when it finally came, and felt it didn’t flow right. (because it wasn’t really developed… she’s just had a few random thoughts between sex) I didn’t “feel” like I had a handle on either Eloise or Logan’s personalities, so the connection felt forced. The majority was from Eloise’s POV, so it may have helped to have more from Logan. (??) I was also left with tons of questions. What’s going on with the diplomats? Who are “we” at war with and why? Why is the govt. lying about the virus? What’s the plan/goal of future? What were these protocols that were in that book that Eloise read? And the ending??!! It came out of nowhere, (although I expected it- I just expected more of a reason) and wasn’t really explained, and ended abruptly. How much time had passed? What’s their future going to look like? Are they a couple, do they get to stay together? Is he ever going to bite her? These are the things that left me unsatisfied.

This has been sat on my kindle for far too long, and after reading Omega Awakening - written after this but set before - I knew I had to rectify that oversight. Whilst this wasn't quite at the same level as OA it was still an incredibly enjoyable read. It didn't feature as many of the dynamic traits as one would normally expect in an omegaverse - no nesting, knotting, bonds etc. - but that was due to those factors not being appropriate to the storyline.

Where this fell down a little for me, (and bear in mind I'm rating this 3.5 stars as I definitely enjoyed it), was that it focused too much on the sex/domination aspects. For me a really good omegaverse story is about more than just the sex. There are some amazing story aspects and plot devices but they were used more as a way to link sex scenes together than to move the story forward. If the author had flipped things, so that the intimate moments linked the rest of the story and enhanced rather than - no pun intended - dominated it.

If we had been given the chance to see Eloise and Logan in neutral settings, I would definitely have felt a stronger connection to them, particularly given that we only really get Eloise's point of view in the story. That said I read this in just over a day, and it only took that long because I had to go out to work! I'm also definitely going to continue reading this series.

The omegas in this series are different in that some of them are singulars which means that they come in different type of esper powers. The alphas have to control them during intergalactic and extra-galactic assignments so that they remain loyal. Anyway, these books are always fun and fast reads.

A great new edition to the Omegauniverse!

I really really enjoyed this book. It was easy to understand the different dynamics.

One thing I really missed though, which I kept waiting for was the knotting, and that just never happened. I felt quite bereft, reading these really good erotic scenes, but an Alpha/Omega book (mf) without knotting frustrated me to no end, because of that I decided to give it 4 stars instead of 5. Because for me personally it's a must!

I hope the 2nd book will be here soon, the author has something really good going here!

Eloise is one of the more rare Omegas and when Logan, her Alpha controller sets the rules she’s torn with following her own path and obeying him. An enjoyable Sci-Fi romance that gets deliciously hot and steamy while we find out what’s happening during the mission. The storyline is consistent and vivid, we get to learn these characters in detail with their dual POV throughout the story.

“You lost yourself for a while, didn’t you? And now you’re weak and helpless. Watching you fussing and fretting while I finger your ass is a—joy.”

nowhere near as good as Omega Awakening, I did still enjoy this book very much. It is about a completely different couple but the story continues with the enemies being a pain in the ass. I had a hard time seeing the connection between the Alpha and his new omega in this book but I’m hoping that the next book is better.

Raunchy sex scenes though. I loved that.

Debut novel is a gem! Science fantasy world, with a virus divided society into different layers, and the h is an uncomfortable late bloomer Omega. She's assigned to the Alpha H, who overwhelms the h. The writing is fantastic, and I could not put this book down due to great pacing, plot and kinky characters. This is just an awesome world, but only for the brave who like darker, compelling reads where consent is little more than a pipe dream for Omegas. Loved it.

Well, this one was pointless.

The little story there was, was aimless.
The most part of the book was a simple sex fest. Nothing more or less. The fighting and struggling to equal out or give in to the power exchange wasn’t executed very well. It was too superficial to carry half of the book. And everyone was more or less in their own heads. So not much exchange happened besides body fluids.
This was simply a disappointment. The idea for the story was great and the little of the world building we got as well. Yet, the emphasis is on “little”.
The writing was at times not fluent to read. The sentences stagnated.
All in all, not ready to have been published.

Cool story, lots of action

I didn't think I'd like this story, the blurb felt dark. However, one chapter in and everything changed! By the third chapter I was all in, but at the end of the book, I wanted more. The alpha controller and singular omega had some of the hottest dom/sub sex that I've read in a while, and then the fighting action came in. Wow. The only thing that bugged me was that cure she was bent on stealing, was it just mind games from the doctor? Was it a test? I'm dying to find out, hopefully in the next book?

Awesome Alpha hero. Loved all the soldiers, really. I liked the book, a lot, and yet... it needs some polishing. Small things added up to confusing bits here and there, and some simple editing corrections would help, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the grittiness of it all.
And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but one or two less sex scenes, instead devoting to story and character connection/depth, would be beneficial.

A beautiful interstellar setting - omitted.

A dangerous tactical mission- barely there.

How alpha and omega characters connect - only the sexual level is present and takes most of the book.

No plot structure, no build-up, or release of tension.

The sex is excellent, however. But I'm disappointed. The premise and the concept promised so much more.

I like it!
This is not my first Omegaverse book but this author definitly build her own world with her Omegaverse.

In a world that changes from the man made virus, DNA changes that boxes people. Alpha. Beta. Omega. This is the time when the strong are stronger and they who won't follow the rules are outcast rebels.

Now, I'm not a fan of scify. I get trouble for remembering all the "smart"jargon. I prefer my books with strong chemistry and feels. And this book have it.

The author may create another world of Omegaverse that for me are scary. But she write good character with strong chemistry.

From the first time Eloise put her hand in Logan's, I feel the zing.
When he speak, I can feel his voice.
When they first meet eyes, ohmylawwwd I can feel fire around them.
And the steamy scenes? I made mistake reading at work cause hotdangit! It was hot! I mean scorching hot! Like hot hot hot!
And he haven't even in her yet! 😱😘😂

One thing I feel so very different from the other omegaverse is the Omega here as in Eloise, doesn't have heat moment. I mean it's like a normal girls got hot over an Alpha dominant kinda moment for her. But not in that Omega kinda heat. You know what I mean if you have read another Omegaverse books.
So yeah, Elouise situation feels like unslave sex for me and that's good.
For Logan, wow! 😂I can hear him purr and growl and my undies are wet. Seriously this Alpha definitly needed in real world😂

Wanna read the next book in this series!

As a huge fan of m/f Omegaverse, I am always on the lookout for new authors in the genre and I was delighted to discover L.V. Lane. Taking Control is the first entry in her new series and it didn't disappoint. I adored both main characters, though it took me a little longer to warm up to the Alpha. Their chemistry was red hot and paved the way for an emotional connection. The writing flowed beautifully and the plot kept me engaged in the story. Can't wait for book two!

I'd already read almost all the books in this series before I finally got to this one, but it didn't really matter. It actually helped a bit because I understood more about Eloise's gift. Logan was really good for her and I liked him. Eloise was bit too annoying and childish for me though in this book, which surprised me because she didn't come across that way in the rest of the series. Entertaining story though.

Meh. The characters were forgettable and to be honest a bit boring without strongly defined personality traits. The story idea was decent, the action scenes were good. The steamy scenes were nice and hot though. Generally okay read for me.

I was just missing too much

Let’s start by that I deeply respect this author as an accomplished author and the story that she wrote.

However, I found it was lacking in some parts, that to me proved vital to liking or even loving this book.
I love the concept of it and the idea, but I really missed worldbuilding, a background story - how did the humans come into space? What is the empire? What exactly does make a singular so special? I just missed these details, which to me seemed very important into understanding the story. Eloise her motive was not clear for me, and I did miss connection between her and Logan other then punishment for the sole reason of control.

Sadly I struggled to finish the book, and will not continue the series

Taking Control (The Controllers #1) – L V Lane

What happens when an Alpha’s Control becomes more than just a job?

There is an inter-galactic war between the Empire and The Uncorrupted. The Alphas are the dominant dynamic in the Empire and run the ruling council. They also make up the leaders in the armed forces. Like the General and the elite forces of the Controllers. The Controllers take care of the Omegas in service of the Empire.

Our FMC is Eloise, she is an Omega and has been allocated her first Controller and assignment in the war. In typical Omega style, she is petite and submissive and completely naïve when it comes to Alphas.

Let’s meet our Alpha Controller Logan. He is tasked with protecting his allocated Omega Eloise. He is an elite soldier and war hero. He will take nothing short of full obedience from Eloise at all times. Thus Controlling her. Any correction he needs to give her is in the form of spankings followed by sexual comforting.

I am at the start of this series, and I am already hooked. The author offers fantastic character and relationship development along with wonderful world building. The story moves along at a cracking pace and the fight sequences are really well rounded without overdoing the brutality of warzones.

The relationship between the FMC and our (anti) hero follows the usual dominant/submissive style that we have come to expect in Omegaverse. We did not have any knotting in this book, which I found a little frustrating as this is a typical culmination to sexual acts between these two dynamics. This does not mean the sex scenes were not steamy, they were. They just lacked the usual ending that comes with an Alpha/Omega pairing.

I cant wait to read the next book. Five stars.

Five Stars and Smoking Hot To Boot!

This is the first book I've read by L. V. Lane. I love the chemistry between Eloise and her Alpha, Logan. This is the first book in the series where all the ground work is laid for future installments. The dynamics are neatly unpacked from Alpha thru Omega, carefully fleshing out the characters and the corrupted world(s) they inhabit. There are elements of power exchange and steamy interludes, mixed with the suspense. The ever present danger lurking in all fronts, where motives are hidden, multilayered and not so clear to pin point. If you love a steamy, suspenseful, Omegaverse, you will love this book and author!

Loved the chemistry between the main couple. The characters were likeable and the world building was decent. The smut was the best. Truely the best of the best. If you are into praise kink you are in for a good one!

There was really not much of a story to this book. It was mostly just sex. I would have liked more of an explanation of the Omega/Controller relationship and why “investing” was necessary. Logan made Eloise read about “investing”, and other than the sex scenes that were involved in that, there was no explanation for the whole “investing” thing. I had so many questions! Like why was it necessary? What were these protocols that were in that book that Eloise read? Maybe the answers will be become more apparent as the series continues.

I also wish that more of the book was written from Logan’s perspective. About 90% of it was written from Eloise’s POV, and there were only a couple of chapters where we got to see what Logan was thinking. I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending either. I felt like it ended rather abruptly.

The story has potential, but the major problem is the characterization of Eloise. Her personality is non-existent and she's a living paradox. She is against war, wants peace, but volunteers to go to war? She is unable to do a complete sentence in front of Logan, but when she meets his team, all embarrassment flies away and she gives them a speech about her abilities? She does not want to invest, but she answers "yes" to Logan? She is really hard to pin down.

Also, chapter two should have been chapter one, and chapter one, the chapter two.

Logan is interesting, but their is only two or three chapter with is POV.
