This is the second installment of the Shadow Boxer series. In the first book, Asset, the main character was named Brilliant “Brill” Winger. In this book, his name is Brilliant “Brill” Wingfield; that change of last names is never explained, which is one of several confusing situations in this book. Brill had been a mercenary soldier working along the Angolan and South Africa border. He was an excellent mercenary soldier. He was fearless, a crack shot and weapons expert who was also physically tough in hand-to-hand combat situations. Now that career path is closed to him for reasons well explained in the book. Essentially, he is a free agent. The USA president wants to recruit him for their clandestine services, perhaps the CIA. The reason why the USA want Brill in particular is never explained. Plus, the USA does not ask him nicely and make an offer he cannot refuse. Instead, they kidnap him and hold Brill prisoner. This recruitment technique is not explained, nor is it well received by Brill. Brill doesn’t want to work for the USA, but he gives no reason why. When he escapes from their training center/prison, he nearly kills the people sent to recapture him. Clearly, he wants no part of the USA’s proposal. But he never explains his vehement refusal to join up. The book ends with Brill seemingly caught between either joining the CIA or Britain’s MI6. How MI6 came into the picture at the last minute isn’t clear either. Brill’s skills are in demand, but he doesn’t want either job. Now, the action scenes in this book are excellent and vividly described. It is the unexplained motivations by potential employers and by Brill that short changes the reader because you cannot understand what motivates each side to take the actions they do in this story.
It was Brill’s turn to cook for Glory (travelling journalist photographer). They didn’t stay in 1 place to long. South Africa. When Brill (American) woke up there was a diving hood over his head. The kidnappers seemed to know a lot about him. Brill wanted to know about the Glory. A black Suburban was waiting at the airport. Republic of Angola, Africa. Brill Wingfield couldn’t take out Bulldog (driver). Mr. President & the Senator were discussing Brill. Sherman took the worst end of the deal with a confrontation with Brill.
What will become of Brill?
I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written action book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great action movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. It was just OK for me so I will only rate it at 4/5 stars.

This is the first novel I have read by Chris Lowry, and I read it as a stand alone. I highly recommend you read the books in order so that you can grasp the full content of the novel. "This is a brilliant read ... well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with and wonderful world building. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation.
Brill Wingfield is an addiction. This recent offering takes us back to the early days in his career. He is kidnapped by frogmen in SA and transported back to the US. Eight against one does not leave much option to fight fair.
These texts still desperately need editing. The body count and violence are a given.
I love this main character. Brilliant is funny, smart and good at getting away f err on the bad guys. I guess he is a good guy. I like him and the story was gripping. Great action adventure.
This is a short book, but interesting in a different way the character is developed. He starts out all powerful and all seeing, but as the story develops he doesn’t come across as that smart or all knowing. It’s still worth the read.
This book seems to jump forward a long way, as Brill is now a fully trained mercenary. Captured and returned to the US, he is persuaded his future lies with them. Brill does not feel the same and sets about taking his life back.
This is James Bond on steroids. Any book written by Chris Lowry is going to be a great read. This writer can write any style of book and make everyone love it, he is that good.
