Her submission is his sweet revenge…until the truth detonates his plans.
When Joe learns Hunter’s name, his inner Dom’s lust turns to black rage—he’s convinced it’s her fault a teammate committed combat suicide. He embarks on a plan to seduce her, but by the time her sweetness ensnares him, the truth threatens what could be the love of a lifetime.
Bestselling and multiple award-winning author Victoria Saccenti writes what she loves to read: contemporary steamy/dark romance, PNR and Fantasy romance, MC Daddies and 20th century military. She can’t resist exploring the twists and turns of human interaction and the ways of love. Her characters are flawed, angsty, and seeking redemption. The good news is she’s an avowed optimist, so expect to read happy endings. A native of Cuba, she speaks English and Spanish fluently, loves to dance salsa and drink single malt whisky. After thirty years of traveling the world for an international company, she’s settled in Central Florida, where she splits her busy schedule between family and her active muse at Essence Publishing. However, if she could convince her husband to sell their home, she would pack up her computer and move to Scotland, a land she adores.
I wasn’t sure how to review this book. While it is very well written, it takes a long time to warm up to the main characters. At first, they both come off as cold, calculating, and manipulative, It isn’t until the second half of the book that we see them for who they actually are.
When Joe meets Hunter, he can’t believe he has found the woman responsible for the destruction of one of his teammates in Afghanistan. When he hears from his employee, Dan, that she is a heartbreaker who has broken up at least one couple, he sets up an elaborate plan to make her fall in love with him, then leaver her flat.
For her part, Hunter uses men to punish herself for her perceived failures. When the truth comes out, what she does makes more sense, but initially, she seems like a love em and leave em type.
Eventually, Joe realizes that his perception of Hunter is way wrong and she is perfect for him. But by then, others have learned of his plan and use the information to ambush Hunter. Can he find a way for her to forgive him and accept that he really loves her?
Some of the secondary characters are much more likable. Soledad and Kelly are great friends to Hunter and Master Kurt warns Joe against his plan. On the other hand, Aaron and Dan are despicable.
Ultimately, the excellent writing makes this a good book.
“Meanwhile, lean muscled and tall, Joe walked with the elegance of a feline roaming its hunting grounds, a stride the military had drilled and honed. Once, he’d been a leader of men and had expected their obedience. Although he downplayed this aspect of his personality, the angle of his head and the tilt of his shoulders gave him away. While his casual clothes gave a relaxed appearance—his brand-new, perfectly fitting jeans, black pullover, and polished boots spoke of a man who paid attention to detail—even the two-day stubble worked for him. Joe wasn’t done with life yet. He was still hungry.”
“She placed her hand within his large warm fingers, and a new storm of contradicting emotions took her. Excitement, desire, and fear battered her from every direction, and at the center of the vortex, a certainty of peace and safety soothed her. For the briefest of moments, her mangled soul lost its scars. The rough ridges smoothed out. She felt protected and guarded. She wanted to weep and laugh."
Deception is my first read by Victoria Saccenti. Never having read any of her work before, I really didn’t know what to expect going into this book. I discovered that the author has a very descriptive and ‘visual’ style to her writing- with an attention to detail that really brought his story to life. I loved that part of the book. I really liked the premise, offering something a little different from other books in the same genre. I was really into this story- until the dialogue and interactions between characters. Something about it really put me off a bit. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it seemed a little forced and/or somewhat disingenuous. There were cheesy moments, and some of the ‘sex-scenes’ were a little awkwardly worded. This did seem to improve as the story progressed and I did enjoy the second half more than the first. This book should have ticked all the boxes for me- but fell a little short. Maybe it was just me, as I have read a few of the other reviews for it and they all seem to have no problems with it- so I think I will revisit this book again in the future and see if I still feel the same way or whether I was just having an off reading day. This book is a game of seduction, with revenge being the end game. But what happens when this spider web of intrigue and deception begins to unravel? What happens when feelings become involved? And what happens when the truth is revealed? You really need to read the story if you want to find out. I really wanted to love this book so much more than I did. But I just couldn’t connect with it the way I’d hoped. Maybe next time.
Deception by Victoria Saccenti is my first read by this author. I pretty much got lost in the pages and stayed up half the night reading. I couldn’t put it down till I finished. This is about Joe and Hunter. Joe is a marine and is seeking revenge because of a teammate who committed suicide and Hunter is the target. She finds herself drawn to Joe. What does the future look like? Find out what happens next in tbis absolute must read. I look forward to reading more from this author
I have read most books by this author and I love the way this book went. As usual the writing is detailed and consistent; it flows smoothly throughout. Great character buildup and a storyline filled with secrets and hard truths but a story that had me hooked right away. Nothing like a good revenge story! Definitely recommended!
4 Star Review Deception by Victoria Saccenti Victoria Saccenti is a new author to m and how I have not come across her before, I have no idea. There’s a fine line between love and hate as there is with revenge. Joe, an ex-marine is convinced that Hunter is responsible for one of his “brother’s”committing combat suicide and when the opportunity arises, is determined to seek revenge. He is a Dominant who lives the lifestyle and yet he plans to seduce Hunter and exact revenge; not all is as it appears and Joe slowly learns the truth. What he doesn’t count on his that Hunter is a natural submissive and his perfect for him. Both of them are keeping secrets and when they are revealed will their blossoming relationship be able to withstand the truth or will it be shattered, beyond repair. The author did a good job in explaining the lifestyle and the relationship between a Dom and his submissive and I enjoyed the dynamics of this book. The chemistry between Joe and Hunter sizzled and it was interesting to watch their story play out through their exploration of BDSM.
This is the first book in a BDSM series by an author that was new to me. It was actually the blurb of the 2nd book in the series that caught my eye, so I decided to read the books in order. They can be read as standalones but I know that the main characters from this book also appear in the second so for me the decision was made to read in the order they were written. I’m really glad that I decided to read this book and not just read book 2 as I really loved Joe and Hunter’s story. At the beginning both characters come across as quite cold and calculating, but as you get to know the real characters as the story progesses, you really see their true qualities shine through. I grew to love both these characters and was really rooting for them to get the HEA they deserved. Being a BDSM story, as you may imagine the sexy times are HOT. The author does a great job of having Dominant Joe bring out the true submissive in Hunter and it really made for some compelling reading. 100% recommend.
Joe is a Marine. While in Afghanistan, one of his buddies became distraught over a letter from home and committed suicide by mission. Joe ended up getting hurt and sent home. Going about his normal business at home, he goes to a bar with a buddy, Dan. There he runs into the woman who wrote the letter, Hunter. Still upset over his friends death, Joe devises a revenge plan. He’s going to make her fall in love with him and walk away. But what happens when he’s the one doing the falling? Opinion I love the revenge idea for this story. Having served in the military, i know that it is totally feasible that a letter from home could change a service members complete outlook. With deaths laying at the hand of a letter from home, I can see where those involved would want retaliation. I think all that had happened to Hunter ends up being a bit much. With her back story and the events in the story, I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone with this much misery. The two characters work together well. They compliment each other’s drawbacks and support their strengths. They would be a couple you’d pull for in real life. The ending, while happy, just ended. I would have liked to have seen a bit into the future after they worked through everything. Overall, it’s a good book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Many thanks to Bare Naked Words for providing me with an ARC of this book.
Deception by Victoria Saccenti is a sexy military romance story where revenge is the name of the game. The story is a little different from your norm and I liked that. Joe is a Dominant he has Hunter in his sights and with his sexy good looks he knows just how to reel them in. I enjoyed the story premise and Victoria’s writing style. There were a couple of the characters I could have done without but overall, I liked the MC’s. Truths are revealed but trusts are broken and may never heal. It is an emotionally charged story as past horrors are brought to the present.
While serving in Afghanistan Joe's Marine buddy received letter from home which caused him to commit suicide on a mission. When Joe was injured he returned home. Now he is searching for the the identity of the person who sent his Marine buddy that fatal letter.
With Hunter in his sights Joe forms a simple plan to get revenge for his buddy. Somehow along the way Joe realizes things are not always as they seem.
The characters in this book are deep, emotional, and compelling. I loved the building tension between Hunter and Joe even when the deception from his part was evident. Hunter's inner strength and ability to perserver will blow your mind. How did she keep going? As their relationship grows and reveals the full power exchange you can feel the healing take place. The best part of the story is the truth that is unveiled when love is allowed.
There are two main players in this novel. However, even the side characters are just as important. Joe is an ex-marine who is out for revenge and then there is Hunter, who is penned as a whore and man user, when in fact, she is the total opposite. Only when men’s egos get damaged, they find a way to fight back. Thus she’s left with a reputation she doesn’t deserve.
With a wonderful backstory and the plot coming together, the author then throws in sex and submission.
Joe is a dominant. He lives the lifestyle and has two regular submissives who he plays with. Determined to get his revenge on the innocent Hunter, he soon discovers that she is a born submissive and is perfect for him. Someone he never even knew he was looking for. But they both hold secrets that need to be told. Who will break first? And how much more damage can it cause to two broken people?
The author does a great job of explaining the dynamics of a dominant and a submissive relationship. This is the perfect book for those that love reading hot sizzling sex scenes. Who would turn down Joe’s command? I know I wouldn’t.
The author will open your mind to this world, and the amazing writing will have you picturing yourself in Hunter’s place or you guys, being the dominant Joe. Each scene is carefully mapped out. Each character in this book plays a crucial role.
Is there a happy ending for Joe and Hunter? You’ll have to read this book to find out. I read it in two sittings and I only put it down because I was forced to.
A great read and I look forward to more hot novels by this author.
This book starts out with the main character seeking revenge but it changes pace as it switches the narrative of the intention. The dynamics of the characters play well into the reader's hand. This is steamy yet romantic as they get caught up in one another. Great read!
Raging for revenge, Joe embarks on a quest to seduce Hunter who he believes is the reason a teammate committed suicide. What Joe did not count with, was his primal feelings that are awakened by her and that threaten to turn his entire world upon its axis. Caught up in the feelings Hunter is intrigued by Joe, but she wants to protect her heart that has been hurt a few times too many. A push and pull ensues, between Joe and Hunter and the love that is growing may very well be dashed to pieces by the deception that started their relationship. The cover was misleading I think, I was thinking this would be a more action-oriented book with some slight romantic undertones. The romance has a greater role within this book and there is much Dom/Sub situations involved as well. There are plenty of twists and turns within the story, mainly through revelations in conversations between characters that will keep you guessing what will happen in the end. A good book.
Joe Reid was leading his troop into a special operation to take down a known Taliban drug lord, Zaman. He knew Billy had received a letter which gave him a faraway look. While the team entered the village and set up their positions, Cooper and Billy went their own way while Joe had taken out a sentinel. Zaman had a PK machine gun and killed Cooper and Billy. Joe managed to hit Zaman before an RPG struck a hut he had hidden behind. Joe lost one of his eyes and was haunted by the PTSD from losing Billy as they had formed a closer relationship similar to being brothers.
Dan Barton was now working for Joe with a landscaping business. He had finally convinced Joe to join him at a bar that he frequented. Joe entered the bar and was surprised by the clean and friendly owners. Kelly was married to Pete and waitressed. She had become like a big sister to Hunter Giodarno, an almost 30 year old woman who had a tendency to dismiss men. She tried to pretend she was detached and uninterested, causing men to fall for her only to dump them right after. She was currently dating a younger man, Aaron, who had become clingy and too serious for her taste. After sleeping with him that evening, she left him. However she had caught Joe's attention- but not for the same reason that most men wanted her
Hunter had written a letter to Billy, dumping him prior to the mission he died on. Her letter was impersonal. In Joe's view, retribution was due and he would break. Hunter like she had done to Billy. She had cost him his eye, and 2 men were dead.
Joe had a potential interest in Orlando- Danielle. He was quite happy with his 2 subs- Elena and Danielle, though he preferred Danielle. However, he was on mission and would skip the weekend and invite Danielle to dinner midweek. This weekend he planned on breaking Hunter. As he worked his plan, Hunter fell for every moment of it. However, Joe had been lying to her and he felt guilty. Soledad and Kelly were Hunter's only friends and knew that she was working to bring her son Kevin home to her. Her mother kept calling her regarding responsibilities...and money.

Joe has just come back from a tour which devastated him and his teammates, when IED exploded all, he can see is his friend running toward the bomb to save them but also stop the depression with that fateful letter, Joe’s world is turned upside down.
Now, moved back home and running his families Landscaping business Joe leads a solitary life but when his colleague invites to the local pub, Joe is fed up of being on his own and decides to join him but when he meets the woman who ruined his friend and cause the devastation with made him take his own life, a plan of revenge creeps into Joe’s mind and Hunter becomes the hunted.
Hunter is lost in life, not quite sure where she is going but has the goal to get her son moved from her mother’s clutches to be with her. Although she is not one for relationships, the love them until they want more then she dismisses them and moves on, but when the tall, dark and Alpha walks into the bar her insides call to her to get to know this man, but when she finally gets to be with Joe will she be able to be the submissive woman he requires and needs.
This is the first story I have read by this author, and I enjoyed the book thoroughly, although at the beginning I found it tough to get into once over the initial couple of chapters it was intriguing and flowed well. I loved the character of Hunter, she was sassy and thought she knew who she was, although when Joe started introducing her to certain ways and behaviours her whole mind set needed to change and understood the need to be with Joe.
I always love a good, flawed character and Joe is another one to add to my pile, with his alpha male tendencies and the pure dominance he was great to read as a character. The relationship was lovely to watch as a slow burn and knowing the true reason at the beginning for the relationship was interesting to see the whole love blossom in the end. The ending of the story was brilliant, and I am glad they got there happy ending.
Can’t wait to read the next story and see the sexy Master Kurt’s story.
Joe is a damaged war vet trying to get back to normal in the civilian world again. Hunter is a waitress at the local bar, and when he sees her at first, something about her has him interested. When he realizes just how small this world is, and she is the Hunter that is ultimately the reason for him being damaged as well as the death of one of his friends, Joe decides that he is going to have some revenge. Get her to fall for him, and then break her just like she does others. But when Joe realizes that she is a natural submissive, he decides to play a bit with that. Somewhere along the line, Joe's need for revenge took a backburner to whatever Joe and Hunter are building. But what happens when everything comes to light, all the secrets that they are both hiding from each other? Will Hunter be able to trust Joe again?
So, this was a relatively good read. I really enjoyed the BDSM aspect, that was nicely well done! There was loads of drama, and when I say loads I mean, Hunter had enough baggage for a few people. I really didn't agree with Hunter and actually found myself judging her for some of her situation (not all, I'm not a monster, just don't agree with the Kevin situation). I feel like the ending was a bit forced, like the author didn't really know where to go with it so bam here ya go happy ending. I was left wanting more than what we get. I give this 4 stars.
The book Deception by Victoria Saccenti is a story that I enjoyed reading. It is a book that pulled me in from the beginning and I found myself not wanting to put it down until the final page. It is a story that includes revenge and love. I loved reading about the characters of Joe and Hunter. Joe is a man who is set on revenge because of the suicide of a teammate. Hunter is his target. He starts down a carefully laid path. What would happen if in the process other emotions and feelings begin to form? Hunter is a woman who finds herself drawn to Joe. He is unlike those who have come before. What does the future hold for Joe and Hunter? Read this book to find out. This is a story that had me turning pages to find out what happens next. It is written in such a way the I felt like I was right there with the characters. I enjoyed reading about the bantering back and forth between Hunter and Joe. This book does have very steamy scenes that make the temperature in the room rise. I also enjoyed reading about Hunter’s best friend who is always there to help her. I liked that Hunter’s character is strong and intelligent. She has goals set for herself and is determined to achieve them. Don’t miss out on a story that is intriguing and entertaining. I highly recommend reading it.
I had no clue what I was getting myself into when I picked up Deception by Victoria Saccenti, but boy was I in for a steamy and fun ride! This is a new author to me but something about the cover and a few teasers really drew me in and I decided to give it a go. I didn’t expect the amount of steam and bdsm lifestyle that I got but I loved it. It is a difficult topic for me to read at times because I too live an active role in alternative lifestyles and sometimes these books can come across as anything but true and realistic to those that live the life. Saccenti did a wonderful job in my opinion of incorporating the characters lifestyles without letting it become overwhelming and the only thing the book is about. I was sincerely grateful for that and it will be bringing me back for more of Saccenti’s novels very soon!
This one has a strong main character, Joe, an ex-marine with vengeance on his mind. He is determined to find the person responsible for the death of a former brother in arms. I loved the side characters just as much as Joe and was really drawn into the character development as the story went on. I loved the suspense build and was on the edge of my seat a lot of the time wondering what would come next. I look forward to seeing what else is available from Saccenti while I await anything new!
Deception is Book One in the Central Florida Stories series. It is a story of a man and a woman brought together under less than desirable circumstances. The storyline was intriguing, captivating, vividly written, and took a turn that I did not expect. The characters are ones that take a bit of warming up to but after learning a bit more of their backstory they become more compelling and lovable. Joe, an ex-marine, is determined to seek revenge on a woman named Hunter who he is convinced caused a teammate to commit combat suicide. Hunter has a reputation for using men, breaking up marriages, and for being easy. When Joe seeks out Hunter to dish out his revenge, he discovers that she is not like that at all. Hunter has gained her reputation when men’s feelings get hurt and they tear her down to seek their revenge against her. When Joe learns this and gets to know Hunter better his feelings for her start to change. Joe also discovers that Hunter is a submissive which is a perfect match for him as a dominant. What started out as revenge has turned into something more and the chemistry between Joe and Hunter sizzles. This book had action, suspense, drama, danger, lies, revenge plots, friends to lovers, and chemistry galore as the author delves into the world of dominants and submissives.
Well leave it to me to read a series out of order. Thankfully this author has written this story (and book 2) so well that each can be read as a stand alone and while there is some character overlap, everything makes sense.
Main character, Joe, is an ex-Marine and a Dom. These are the only good things about him in the beginning. I don’t like him. I was more than half way through this book and I still didn’t like him. Joe is angry and his anger is definitely misplaced. However, at about 75% Joe redeems himself and holy moly! The sex and all the good stuff in this story is REALLY good. The heartache and trauma though is really tough and explains the hardness of these characters.
Hunter is the woman in Joe’s sights. According to Joe, she is the reason for all his misery. Hunter is just trying to survive and create a happy healthy place to live for her and her son. But to be honest men suck. And family isn’t much better. The men never live up to her standards, something is always missing. Who knew sexy, grumpy Joe would be it.
The title of this book is perfect. I am glad I did not read this book first as Joe’s character in the beginning was almost a hard no, I almost needed a safe word just for him to go away. Good job Victoria Saccenti!
Looking forward to reading the next story from hot Central Florida and this author!!!
This is my first book I have read from this author, I was intrigued by the snyposis of the story-line and the cover and decided give it a try. The story of Joe and Hunter gave plenty of intrigue, spice of the charts, seduction, revenge....I wish I had felt a bit more of a connection with the characters. It is a good story to start the Central Florida Stories series and I am already read to continue to book 2.
Joe, a marine hurt in combat, has only one plan when he came home....revenge on a woman that hurt one of his fellow comrades while oversees to the breaking point. The perfect plan is in place when he learns of Hunter, the woman who hurt is friend dearly....seduce this woman and leave....no question and no looking back.....
Hunter is working hard to make herself a better, more stable life so she can have her son be with her after years of running away from danger. Hunter holds some deep secrets and insecurity... but is totally taken back when she meets Joe. Spark and sizzle...the attraction runs deep for both of them.
Will past demons and lies come back to haunt both Joe and Hunter? Will Joe be able to protect Hunter when she needs him the most?
Deception by Victoria Saccenti. Joe is hell bent on getting revenge for his buddy. While serving in Afghanistan Joe's buddy gets a Dear John letter which results in his buddy getting his self killed and Joe hurt. Now back state side Joe is on a mission to find the author of that letter and make her pay. Hunter has had it hard. Her looks have been her curse. For the first time a good looking guy has come into the bar she works in and has not only caught her eye but gives her the tingles in her lower regions. Definitely something she hasn't felt in a long while. Joe's plan is in place but what he thought would be easy turned into something different. This was my first time reading this author. The synopsis peaked my interest. I am glad it did. I wanted to see how Joe's plan would end. There were also revelations regarding Hunter that I didn't expect. The chemistry between Joe and Hunter was hot and pany melting. Just a really good story that kept me wanting more. I look forward to reading more from this author. 4 stars for me.
Deception is the first book I've read by author Victoria Saccenti. I'm not sure how I've missed her for so long, being an avid reader of military and power exchange books!
After returning home from a ruined mission in Afghanistan where they lost one of their own, former Marine, Joe is ripe for a fight. Encountering the woman who mailed the letter that caused his brother-in-arms to commit suicide was the last thing he expected. But plotting to seduce the submissive (Hunter)as a form of revenge sounds like an excellent way to avenge his friend's death. As he and Hunter grow closer, he realizes all is not what it seems. Will his need for revenge cost him the only woman he's ever fallen for?
This book was so intriguing. The characters were deep and complex and you felt all their emotions. Hunter has been through so much but she's still standing (kneeling, as it were). Her strength is inspiring. I really enjoyed the book although I do wish the ending hadn't been so abrupt. Good read by the new to me author!

Victoria Saccenti is a new to me author, and I definitely have plans to read more of her work in the future. This is the story of Joe, a marine, and after his teammate got a terrible letter from home, he committed suicide & Joe blamed the letter writer for it. He comes home, and while at a bar one night, he comes across Hunter, the letter writer, and a plan of revenge is formed. Joe is going to make Hunter submit to him, and make her fall in love with him & that's when he'll get his revenge. However, as he starts his plan which has them spending time together, he's learning that there's more to the story, plus he's starting to catch feelings for her. They definitely have a lot of heat together, but I was on the edge of my seat waiting for that other shoe to drop because Joe is hiding things, and dirty little secrets always come out. My only issue with this story was the ending because it didn't feel quite wrapped up, but this is only my opinion, you should hit your one click buttons to decide for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
This is the first book I've read by the author, but it won't be my last. Warning now if you don't like BDSM then this won't be a book for you.
Hunter is a girl who turns everyone away. She's the type who doesn't want to let a guy in. Known as a heartbreaker and homewrecker she likes life that way. Until Joe Reid enters her life. The quote I choose for Hunter is: “I thought I was losing my mind. See, he calls to me, and more bewildering is the sensation of healing I get from him.”
Joe, a former Marine, comes home for good. Losing a buddy of his started something that changes his life. Hunter wasn't supposed to change his life but she did. For the better it seems. The quote I choose for Joe is: “Damn, girl. You flirt, you’ll find me and a hell of a lot more.”
This book was an amazing page turner and I will be keeping my eye out for more. Hunter and Joe are so realistic I thought it was a movie. I do highly recommend this for anyone who likes to think outside the box.
Deception (Central Florida Stories Book 1) by Victoria Saccenti
Great story! Full of action & adventure, with just the right amount of twists. Leaves the reader wanting more. Couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to determine what happens at the end! First time reading Victoria Saccenti, but it definitely won’t be my last!
While away at war, the bonds formed between the soldiers is like no other. Joe, an ex-marine is full of anger & rage and ready to extract revenge on the girl who broke his war time buddy’s heart, causing him to commit suicide . While Joe’s original intention with Hunter is to avenge his buddy’s death, he finds himself completely captivated by her as well. As the story unfolds, Joe is torn between continuing to seek revenge for his friend’s death and the feelings he is developing for Hunter. Will he allow himself to develop a sincere relationship with Hunter, or will the anger consuming him over the death of his friend be too much to let go, causing him to lose the possibility of a true relationship with Hunter?
Wow! Deception had me drawn in from the start. Joe is a hardened combat marine who was a squad leader. You begin in the middle of a mission and get into his sharp mind, logic, and dedication to protect his brothers in arms. When they realize they missed a truck, it is too late for things not to go horribly wrong. Joe's best friend commits combat suicide, he is hit with an IED shrapnel and it puts an end to his military career. After a long healing process, he heads back home to take over the family business.
When he meets the person he holds responsible for the loss of his best friend and his life changing forever, he hatches a plan for revenge. As Hunter opens herself up to him and they begin to connect, he finds himself less sure of beliefs he had held so close to his heart. Will two wounded people get a chance to move past their heartaches and struggles together and find a respite in each other?
Powerfully written, you are immediately drawn in from page one. Relationship building and vulnerability keep you invested. Jumping in to book 2 immediately!
