Rate this book
Yaakov Cohen, "Ya'aqooba", was a fascinating and mysterious person in the intelligence history of the state of Israel. A senior spy, special agent (Mistaarev, undercover agent in Arab regions), and a legend. Ya'aqooba, who spoke fluent Arabic and also because of his appearance, found it easy to integrate into Arab communities. However, more than anything, there was something special in him, that made everyone accept him as one of their own.
Ya'aqooba's activities in Arab countries were not known to the public, but senior officers in the security system today state that his contribution to the State of Israel was of great importance.
In this spellbinding novel, Bertha Naim tries to depict the way of life of a senior agent. Based on what little is known of Ya'aqooba’s actions, combined with her rich imagination and her talent for description, Bertha pours light into the secret, fascinating world of the people in the security community.

This is a story about the life of an Israeli spy, how he grew up, and what made him become one of Israel’s most beloved spies. Ya’aqooba maybe unfamiliar to lot of people, however, this story now allows more people to learn about him and what made him a hero. It tells us about just a few of the adventures and dangers (as he put it) that he experienced early in his career.
The author, Bertha Naim, did an excellent job of opening the door into the life of the man in the shadows. Her writing is clear, and easy to understand. The chapter, “About Ya’aqooba”, was a little hard to get through, because of the translation, but trust me it really smooths out and is a great read.
Bertha did a really great job utilizing footnotes throughout the story. And I really appreciated that, because, although she used a lot Hebrew words to keep the spirit of the story alive, it was not necessary for me to know Hebrew to understand it. Her footnotes explained each word and helped me to keep up. That really helped me to see inside the culture, and appreciate the many nuances of both Israelis and Arabs.
If you enjoy stories about spies, or are looking to learn about this legend of Israel, you will enjoy this book.

It is very clean, as in no profanity or sex. It is also easy to read and easy to follow the storyline. And, most importantly, it is very well written and edited.

I recommend this book and give it 5 out 5 stars.
