JEFF PARKER (Aquaman, Future Quest) and DEAN KOTZ (Dungeons & Dragons) invite you to behold the battle between the dashingly heroic John Carter Of Mars and the neverendingly power-hungry little green men of Mars Attacks! HOW has John never encountered these Martians before!? WHY do these cackling monsters want to conquer Mars? And WHAT happens when the war spills over to Earth!? Find out in the stunning volume!
When humanity puts a lander on Mars, the big brained Martians invade earth and Earth's only hope is asleep in an abandoned gold mine in Arizona...
This collects Warlord of Mars Attacks #1-5. I'm a fan of both John Carter of Mars and Mars Attacks! so I had to pick this up.
Warlord of Mars Attacks is a fun read. It feels like a summer blockbuster, complete with quips. Jeff Parker is generally pretty funny and is here. Dean Kotz handles the art chores. His style is a little scratchy and I dig it, particularly his depictions of the Tharks and the big brained Martians, referred to as The Moonheads in the text so that's how I'll refer to them from this point hence.
The story links Barsoom with the Mars Attacks! aliens and also reconciles our version of Mars with Barsoom. Without giving away too much, there are battles on both Earth and Mars and humanity triumphs. John Carter is assisted by Dr. Norman, a descendant of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Maven, another scientist, and Ramon, a guy who won a contest to watch the landing on Mars.
Like I said, it's fun and not completely serious but still a good read. Parker throws in jokes to lighten the mood but he also throws some good concepts into the mix.
Warlord of Mars Attacks Reads Like A Callback To The Great B-Movies From The '80s
Warlord of Mars Attacks is a great and funny "man out of time" story. I was not so sure when I started reading this if I was going to enjoy this story. But I stuck with it and I'm glad I did because it turned out to be a fun story to read. If you enjoy a good "man out of time" story or are a fan of either one of these properties, then I recommend giving this a try 🙂👍.
This miniseries was a tough read for me. I enjoy the component stories, Mars Attacks and Warlord of Mars, but they just don't come together for me here: Not zany enough for the former and not grand enough for the latter, but existing in a weird place between the two that I just didn't get into.
