Adenauer: The Father of the New Germany

After World War II, Germany lay in ruins. To Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) belongs much of the credit for raising West Germany to a position of economic prosperity and making it a respected free-world ally. Born in 1876, in Cologne, Adenauer was part of a devout Roman Catholic family. He was elected mayor of Cologne in 1917, a post he held for 16 years, then a representative in the Prussian State Council of which he became president in 1928. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, Adenauer was stripped of all his political positions, imprisoned and then sent to a concentration camp. But after the war he organized a new party, the Christian Democratic Union and in 1949 he became West Germany's first chancellor, retiring after four consecutive re-elections in 1963.

Charles Cuthbert Powell Williams, Baron Williams of Elvel CBE was a manager and Labour peer. In his 20s he played first-class cricket while at university and for several seasons afterwards.

The son of N. P. Williams and Muriel de Lérisson Cazenove, he was educated at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in literae humaniores in 1955 and a Master of Arts. Williams was further educated at the London School of Economics, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1964. Between 1955 and 1957, he served as Subaltern in the Headquarter of the King's Royal Rifle Corps in Winchester and in the 1st Battalion in Derna in Libya.

Продолжая знакомится с биографиями и главное с самой деятельностью и ее результатами людей, которые вошли в историю как самые выдающиеся политики-реформаторы, руководители государств в XX веке я дошел до Конрада Аденауэра, которого ещё называют «отцом новой Германии».

Сама книга как биография - очень хороша, и в этом большая заслуга автора. Автор отстранено и чувствуется, что весьма объективно подошел к написании биографии. Но Аденауэр как герой данной книги и как личность не то что бы очень далек от идеала, он очень уж отрицательный герой, даже при том, что учтены его многие положительные заслуги, которые благодаря ему получил немецкий народ. Он очень противоречив, и его биография включает в себя столь много фактов, что их можно было бы в наше время смело относить в прокуратуру и судить его по многочисленным статьям.

Можно сказать, что у героя книги были два основных периода деятельности. Один до прихода к власти нацистов и второй, который начался после оккупации германии союзными войсками. Если в период 1917—1933 годов он как обер-бургомистр Кёльна был не более чем коррумпированным, авторитарного стиля управления чиновником, то с сентября 1949 по октябрь 1963 года на посту федерального канцлера Федеративной Республики Германии он проявил себя как искусного политикана, интригана и дипломата.

Но тем не менее, что более удивительно, именно последние его качества возродили Германию из пепла и его деятельность поставила страну в роль одного из центров современного Евросоюза. Именно его политика балансирования между западом и Советским союзом помогла поднять ФРГ на то место которое сейчас она занимает, которую кстати, умело продолжают и используют современное руководство Германии и в частности Ангела Меркель.

Делая вывод, я уверен, что с политикой того же Аденауэра, Ататюрка и даже Рузвельта (как представителей величайших реформаторов XX века) взятых вместе так далеко, а главное качественно не продвинешься, как например деятельностью одного лишь Ли Куан Ю, который пока остается одним из самых великих реформаторов и примеру которого должны подражать тысячи и миллионы политиков и государственных деятелей.

Balanced one. Author did his best in making an unprejudiced biography of a politician, who managed to outlive most of other politicians of his generation

I thought this was excellent. At the beginning, I was surprised how little attention the author gave to Adenauer's siblings or their relationship. But otherwise, coverage was good. Williams was very even handed--showing Adenauer's faults and weaknesses but also showing the good he did. He kept his head down when under the Nazis though they tried to prosecute him. It is odd how he got off when the Nazi's killed people without even trying to get evidence. It made me wonder if there was someone protecting him.

Great book, i just felt that the discussion on Adenauer’s life as a chancellor was a bit rushed towards the end of the book.

Uitstekende biografie van een imposante politicus met een uitzonderlijk lang en veelbewogen leven. Meer dan wie ook verdient de Rijnlandse christen-democraat Konrad Adenauer, geboren en getogen in Keulen, de eer de grondlegger te zijn van het naoorlogse, democratische, anti-communistische, op westerse leest geschoeide Duitsland. Hij was in de moeilijke naoorlogse jaren veertig de juiste man op de juiste plek en bleef tot 1963 bondskanselier van West-Duitsland. Ook als gevolg van zijn persoonlijke inzet voor de ‘Wiedergutmachung’ met het Joodse volk stond hij aan de goede kant van de geschiedenis. Tegelijkertijd was hij, zo blijkt overvloedig uit deze biografie, een agressief en doortrapt politicus die, vooral tijdens verkiezingen (‘keine Experimente!“), weinig naliet om aan de macht te komen en te blijven. Zijn politieke ‘drive’ en doorzettingsvermogen zorgden ervoor dat hij in de ruige Duitse politieke verhoudingen, ook binnen de mede door hem opgerichte CDU, herhaaldelijk als winnaar tevoorschijn kwam. Tot kort voor zijn dood in 1967, op 91-jarige leeftijd, bleef hij zich met de Duitse en de internationale politiek bemoeien.

Zeker zo boeiend als Adenauers naoorlogse jaren zijn de bijna zeventig jaar die daaraan voorafgingen. Charles Wiliams besteed aan deze jaren ruime aandacht, getekend als zij waren door het drama van het verlies van zijn twee echtgenotes, de verwijdering uit het ambt van Oberburgermeisterschaft van Keulen in 1933 door toedoen van de Nazi’s en zijn daaropvolgende ballingschap, omzwervingen en gevangenschap. Adenauer was geboren in een arm gezin met een autoritaire, orthodox katholieke vader, een kleine beambte van de Pruisische overheid. Zijn diepgaande religiositeit en autoritaire politieke stijl vallen hier ongetwijfeld op terug te voeren. Na zijn universitaire studie en mede dankzij zijn huwelijk met Emma wist Konrad zich in de Keulse politiek op te werken tot Oberbürgermeister, de jongste van Duitsland. Hij loodste Keulen bekwaam door de Eerste Wereldoorlog en de Britse bezetting heen en zette met ambitieuze initiatieven een onuitwisbare stempel op de stadsontwikkeling. Gedurende de jaren twintig was zijn positie onaantastbaar, totdat de Nazi’s aan het firmament verschenen en hij 15 jaar lang in een nachtmerrie belandde. Zeer de moeite waard, zeker na mijn bezoek aan het Konrad Adenauer Haus en zijn graf in Rhöndorf, samen met mijn goede vriend Auke.

This is fantastic biography more centered in his political activity which is what interests me. I wanted to see how a savvy politician navigated through difficult waters of Weimar and Nazism, I found the answer which I am not going to spoil it. The reading is easy, very fluid, adapted to modern times

It's a great book that falls a little short in some ways - his family life, and his friendships until WWII.

It's one of the more comprehensive Adenauer biographies that doesn't sanitize his role in the formation of West Germany and the decline of relations between East and West.
