This is an unusual art “how to” book. Most art instruction books show very typical light sketchy drawings of people consisting of a circle for the head, a box or circle for the chest area, then another box for the pelvis, then light lines for the arms and legs. Then measuring to try and make certain the proportions are correct, then adjusting, then more light drawing always moving closer to the life-like final. After that comes the inking in. Step after step is drawn out so the student can see how the drawing should progress. New lines are seldom shown in isolation and this can be confusing for struggling artists. The drawings are often accompanied by a lot of written instructions to emphasize the important points of each step to the reader.

But, not this art instruction book by the beautifully named Melody Love. The first instructional drawing shows the main part of a person’s body with one line which includes the pelvis, chest area, and shoulders, or something like that. This makes for an odd shape that doesn’t seem to be much of anything. Is this a bad idea? Actually, it might be a good idea. The unusual shape is unlikely to trigger the left side of the brain into subconsciously telling you that “that’s a human body [part], and I know what that looks like,” then fool you into drawing a symbol instead of what you see. At each step of Ms Love’s drawing process she does not follow the “standard” drawing process. Nonetheless, her manga drawings are very good. If one is having problems drawing manga Ms Love’s set of manga drawing books might be helpful because she takes such an unusual approach to art. Her drawings are unique in that in each step the lines are a different color so the student can see how the new lines relate to the old.

I have not given her 5 stars because her text is the same throughout the books and consists of rah-rah statements of encouragement rather than real instructions for drawing. The introduction is exactly the same in each book.

So, if you are drawing well with the traditional instruction books you don’t need this set of books. If you are struggling and want to try a completely different approach you might give these books a try. AD2

Feels like a 15 year old wrote and illustrated this for 13 year olds

In the spirit of other just copy what I show you learn to draw books this one has 29 samples, but no talk of technique, inking, light and shadow etc. Just 29 okish illustrations walked up to step by step but you would get more copying an artist you appreciate than what little is here.
