a masterpiece but to what cost?!
REVIEW FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES
I went into this thinking it’d be a light story about soulmates reuniting in another life or something sweet like that but wow, it hit way deeper than I expected. What starts as a soft, charming love story between childhood friends quickly unfolds into something heavier, full of grief, war, loss, and the emotional scars that follow. But it still manages to keep its heart, gentle and hopeful, even through the pain.
This is really a story about survival. Not just surviving war, but surviving guilt, broken dreams, physical and emotional wounds. It handles things like survivor’s guilt, body image after injury and learning how to let yourself feel joy again after devastation, all in a way that’s quietly powerful without losing its warmth. There’s a lot of beauty in how it shifts between their sweet domestic life and the harsher parts of their past. You feel how much they’ve gone through and how hard they’ve worked to protect the world they’ve built together.
I also loved how the women were written. Not just the FL, but a lot of the female characters!! They are strong, kind and grounded in a way that balances out the sadness around them. And don’t get me started on the older brother... his presence through letters? Absolutely gutting.
Honestly, this left me with that aching kind of peace. The ending isn’t tragic (because we all die), but it lingers. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t just tell you about undying love, it makes you believe in it, even with all the cracks and pain. Make sure to bring tissues.
