Andrew Mayhem #4

Lost Homicidal Maniac (Answers to "Shirley"): An Andrew Mayhem Thriller

Rate this book
The fourth book in the wildly popular series of horror/comedy novels featuring Andrew Mayhem!

In this dark and hilarious new adventure, Andrew has started up a private investigation business with his best friend Roger (slogan: "We Solve Weird Problems"). Since his options in life will become somewhat more limited after his wife Helen gives birth to triplets, it's his last-ditch effort to get out of being stuck with a corporate day job.

One of their first clients is an attractive woman named Shirley. Keeping with the kind of luck Andrew has had his entire life, her problem is: "I think I may be a serial killer."

Yeah, he takes the job. Even after she insists on being handcuffed to him while they investigate the house where she might have stored the bodies of her victims.

But Andrew discovers that this day has much more danger in store than being handcuffed to a woman who may or may not be a homicidal maniac. Because Mr. Burke, the sadistic villain of his last adventure, has been watching Andrew and plotting a truly ghastly revenge...and the attack begins now!

Packed with the trademark demented humor, wild action, and grisly horror you've come to expect when Andrew Mayhem is involved.

There was a good many years between Jeff Strand publishing the third and fourth Andrew Mayhem thrillers, and my advice to people reading the series (like I just did) from books one to four in a relatively short space of time is, quite simply, don't.

Lost Homicidal Maniac: (Answers to "Shirley") is the worst in an otherwise entertaining and very readable group of books. It makes most of the mistakes that subsequent entries into a franchise often do by trying to go for bigger and badder, and therefore by association, stupider. Of course, Mayhem's tales are not meant to be painstakingly realistic. But there were several times in Lost Homicidal Maniac that my suspension of disbelief threw its hands in the air, shook its head, and packed it in for the night, telling me I was on my own.

The conversation (in my head) went something like this:

Suspension of Disbelief: Okay. And with that, I'm done.

Me: Dramatic much?

SoD: Oh come on. You are so not buying that a group of jack-o-lantern mask wearing assholes can shoot up a bunch of cops in the middle of neighbourhood and no-one is able to track them from that moment in time? In this day and age?

Me: To be fair, this is set back at the start of the millennium. Give or take.

SoD: So?! We had police helicopters and infra-red cameras back then!

Me: I think you're getting overly upset over not a whole hell of a lot.

SoD: That's because you haven't seen the explanation Strand serves up for Shirley.

Me: No, I haven't. And neither have you. Because that's at least 50 pages from now.

SoD: I know. I'm just summarising to be efficient.

Me: Fair enough. Yeah, I have to agree that explanation felt a little tacked on.

SoD: And what about Mr Burke?! Could any James Bond villain be more OTT? And dumb?! And who would work for such a turd? How realistic is that? And then there's the very last twist ...

Me: Alright, alright - spoilers!

SoD: Stick your spoilers. I'm outta here. Wake me up when you read something with dragons or human-eating aliens...

*ahem* So, yeah, my disappointment in this one is significant. There were too many contrivances; too many last-gasp, fortunate escapes; and way too many shoe-horned in plot elements for me to be able to recommend this one. Plus I'm a little over Mayhem's kids being in the think of the action (now, they're too integral to the plot, as opposed to how they were way back in Graverobbers Wanted: No Experience Necessary).

However, if you've read this far in the series, don't let my review put you off. My advice would simply be to better space out your reading of the novels. I suspect I would have liked this one more had I not recently read the superior Casket For Sale: Only Used Once.

2.5 (2 here; 3 on Amazon) Beyond Poor-taste Diabolical Plans for Lost Homicidal Maniac: (Answers to "Shirley").

The fourth and final Mayhem book and I was ready for the roller-coaster to begin.

It starts off well, really well, it’s funny and disturbing in all the right ways. We have an excellent new character, we have psychopaths, animal enthusiasts (lol), kleptomaniacs, big evil millionaires, henchmen, deadly people of all descriptions! We have a great premise too, as always thank you Jeff Strand.

Parts of this were laugh out loud funny, or rather chuckle out loud, parts of this were also gross. Don’t try and read this at work or over any type of food!

The beginning as I said was really good, some very odd stuff going on, as you would expect and then it begins to feel a bit normal, only slightly odd, in fact pretty average almost low weirdness levels for Jeff! But then it gets dark, very dark indeed and slightly less funny because if it. Having said that this is still a good read.

I’d recommend it, I can’t quite describe why it wasn’t as good as the others for me. Of all the Mayhem books no 3 was my favourite and this one, the fourth my least favourite but please don’t let me put you off, this still gets a very decent 4.5*/5, it wasn’t bad just that Jeff standards are so high I expect perfection in every book and this was only very slightly off the mark.

I always love some Jeff Strand. He’s horrific and funny. And is adept at turning any gruesome nightmare into a giggle fest. I do need to read the other Mayhem novels, but this works perfectly well as a stand alone. He does describe things from past books with just enough detail to make sure you aren’t completely lost, and just enough so that he’s not revealing anything he shouldn’t if you haven’t read them. And he never bites you with meaningless excessive details. Right up my alley when I’m craving a quick read.

I don't know, this one didn't capure me as much. It felt like a very slow start and very little happening however, loved the ending once again. When the action starts, I love it a lot but Shirley was annoying me so much it made it harder to enjoy the book. Will read the last one for sure, this was just a bit harder to get trough

Yet another thrilling and hilarious Andrew Mayhem story.

Mayhem is back, and getting into even more trouble. This time the trouble is slightly more plausible, as the villain from the last book, Mr. Burke, is still alive, and is seeking revenge. Mayhem gets swept up in Burke’s vengeful scheme whilst also getting embroiled in a mystery involving a mentally unstable woman called Shirley, who may or may not be a serial killer.

In many ways this book lives up to the awesome standard of the other Mayhem books. The prose is streamlined, the pace is fast, the jokes are funny. It’s compulsively readable and thrilling. And yet, I ended up giving it 4 stars instead of 5, mainly because this book features one of my pet peeves: a recurring villain. Yeah, I know, maybe it’s a bit harsh of me, but I just hate recurring villains. Because unless a villain is truly memorable and important, what’s the point of keeping them around? Just kill them off, give the reader some emotional satisfaction, and create a new one. So yeah, recurring villains bug me. And if anyone is undeserving of recurring villain status, it’s Mr. Burke, a moustache-twirling psychopath whose only motivation is to torment and kill people in novel ways (note: I’m not sure if he literally has a moustache or not). I totally hated this guy and wanted him to die. I know that’s probably the point, but wanting this guy to die for two whole books in a row started to make feel me a little bit over it. I also felt the climax for this one was relatively flat, and the big reveal was only weakly foreshadowed, and a little cheap. Also, the whole ‘Andrew’s kids are in danger’ schtick was starting to wear out its welcome by this stage.

All those criticisms aside, this is still an awesome book that you absolutely should read if you like the other entries in the series. It has a lot of things going for it. Shirley in particular is perhaps the single funniest and most memorable supporting character in the entire series. And, as usual, I enjoyed this book so much that I pretty much immediately started reading the sequel.

Andrew Mayhem-beware! Mr Burke is out for revenge and he means to get just that, and in triplicate. Once again, in the last book of the Andrew Mayhem series, there's lots of gorey action, great ideas and a good story line with plenty of "snappy",fun dialogue. Maybe for Jeff Strand's exceptionally high standards, the story contained too much 'chat" and the action scenes could have been "beefed" up to give it just that little bit more of extra sparkle to make the whole experience even more exciting (Casket for Sale - story 3/4 - had exactly the right balance and was easily the best of the 4.). Although I am delighted to say that I found the whole Andrew Mayhem saga absolutely wonderful, and not one to be missed, the final ending was quite weak and far too "nice". Strange to say that this was totally unexpected as each story usually finishes in absolute carnage and guaranteed unfettered Mayhem. Ratings: this book - 4.5 stars; the 4 story series as a whole - most definitely 5*, at least.

“Lost Homicidal Maniac (Answers to Shirley)” is the fourth in the Andrew Mayhem series in which Andrew and his sidekick Roger have their usual problem: they’ve been hired for a job that might get them killed.

Shirley comes to them concerned that she might be a serial killer. She is the first client of Roger and Andrew’s newly minted private investigator-plus firm, which offers “task” and investigative services. They've already built a fence, so why not look into Shirley? Andrew, about to become the father of triplets, takes the gig.

Shirley tells them about a house she swears is familiar to her, and may contain evidence of her murder-y ways, but she needs Roger and Andrew to check it out with one of them being handcuffed to her so she can't run away if it does. Inside, Andrew and Roger find coolers full of dead animals beneath the floorboards and trouble. An arch nemesis is back and bent on revenge and Shirley is more than a little nuts. She isn't the kind of lady one would want to be handcuffed to, but Andrew can't get free from her.

Like the books before it, here is where a comical premise becomes entirely action-driven, and the plot flies out the window in favor of serial gore and some pretty demented violence. If I had an issue with the prior books’ inclusion of the Mayhem children in the carnage, this installment takes that problem to an unfathomable new level that makes me wonder why I even read these things.

I’m four out of five books into a series and no quitter.

I have no idea how to rate this book. Is it well-written? Yes. The author has a solid handle on dialogue, character, and action—but the plot is always thin, and the character arc boils down to whether they will or won’t survive every time. Andrew and Roger never seem to learn, which is how there are five of these books. If they did, they’d know better. I’m going to rate this a solid 3.5 rounded down for those reasons and because the bad guy’s plot turned my stomach. Seriously, it’s messed up. Jeff Strand pulls no punches. No one is safe. Not the babies or the armadillos. I respect that, but I am heading into a different place as a reader. If you want all the horrible things delivered with comedic flair, this one's for you.

I love Jeff Strand. He is a master with dialogue. His books are funny and dark. This is my favorite book in his Andrew Mayhem series and it's quite twisted as his whole family has been dragged into Mayhem's investigative services.

If you don't like horror, then he is ptobably not the author for you. If you do enjoy horror with clever twists and strange (and equally gross) incidents, then give him a try. Only Strand could come up with these kinds of storylines. No one else can write like him.

Every time I crack open one of his books, I get a sick sense of pleasure in knowing I'll never be bored with what he has written.

Strand continues to bring the thrills and laughs with the fourth release in the Andrew Mayhem series. This time around, Mayhem and crew faces the titular homicidal maniac who happens to be one of the first clients of the investigative agency they have recently opened. Andrew and Roger are hired to determine whether or not Shirley, the client, has been killing people during her recent fugue states.

Naturally, a potential serial killer is the least of their worries as a threat from the past has returned to threaten Mayhem, his friends, and his family.

Overall I was a bit disappointed with how the series wrapped up. There was a lot that I enjoyed about this book, but somethings felt forced and a bit rushed at the end. I would definitely recommend the series and enjoyed reading it. This was my first time reading the author and I am looking forward to checking out some of his other books.

Blood. Guts. Mayhem! Mayhem! Mayhem!

With every single one of these novels I read, Andrew Mayhem's adventures just get crazier and crazier. I literally can't even imagine what will happen to him next.

This book was a rollercoaster thrill ride! I laughed. I cried. I cringed. If you're a fan of Jeff Strand's work, this is a MUST READ!

Shocking!

This was the most shocking so far of these books. I won't give anything away by saying why but suffice to say it wasn't Andrew Mayhems greatest time and he's had some seriously bad times.
As always the inevitable humour was there but this one was indisputably a horror novel.

Funny and strange, although the further along you get in the series, the more Andrew’s children are dragged along for the ride, which leads to a darker tone overall. This one got particularly queasy, with an unexpected gut punch thrown in at the end. I enjoyed it, but it may not be for the faint of heart.

Given the ominous introduction I thought this book would be creepy and or more gruesome. It was not. For me I thought the book would end differently; the elaborate escape was all in Andrew’s head and he finally wakes up from the delusion with everyone dead. I guess that would only work if this was the last book.

I have so enjoyed this series that I start to repeat myself. Andrew and his unfortunate posse just keeps getting better and better at escaping or killing crazy psychopaths. I'm starting to worry for them. It's time to start the next book. Ta ta

Another good story in the Andrew Mayhem series.

Although, I didn't find this one as intense as the last book (what can top trying to kill your daughter?) there was still good action, bad guys, gore & traps!

Poor Andrew. He just can't catch a break. After loosing his left pinky finger in his last adventure, he loses his right pinky in this one. It's another mad adventure full of blood, gore and chuckles.

Andrew & Roger are in a jam with the first case they get at the grand opening of their new "problem solving" business. Client Shirley is a little unhinged and is kidnapped along with Andrew & Roger by the nefarious Mr Burke (from the previous book) who is exacting revenge and more murderous intentions. Fantastic horror story with some truly heartbreaking moments and more disturbing than the last story. I'm still rooting for Andy!

First - A quick 'thank you' to Jeff Strand for a copy of Lost Homicidal Maniac: (Answers to "Shirley"). He knows I'm a huge fangirl!
This is the latest book in the Andrew Mayhem series, and now I'm worried about how long I'll have to wait for the next one!! I might have to just reread the series to get my Mayhem fix. That is not bad news. I can't get enough of Jeff's perfect blend of smart-assery, sarcastic-ness, and horror!
Andrew Mayhem is a magnet for trouble, and he can't seem to stay out of the wierd-o-sphere. Like any red-blooded American, he asks himself "How can I legally profit from this?" Hence A/R Tasks & Investigations. The 'R' in A/R is his hetero-life-mate, and partner in all things bizarre, Roger. The new business venture is a problem solving service based on the idea 'If we can survive numerous encounters with psycho killers, we can handle your task' (the official slogan is "We solve weird problems"). Perhaps it is this slogan that brought Shirley into the office. Shirley - a possible serial killer who is bat-shit crazy, and more irritating than poison ivy.
Lost Homicidal Maniac: (Answers to "Shirley") brings back some past characters, including a surprise cameo straight from the pages of another 5 star book. Don't take my love of Jeff Strand's humor as a sign to let your guard down. The shenanigans surround a some horrifying situations, and one totally gag-inducing scene!
