Meeting your mate is supposed to be an amazing experience. Getting rejected by him, however, is a different story. And it’s Harmony’s story. Her mate chose her sister over their bond and she’s forced to hide the painful experience to avoid hurting someone she loves.
When she can’t bear seeing them together any longer, she decided to move away and join her aunt’s pack in Hawaii. It was her first day in a new school when she locked eyes with Trevor and her heart starts beating for this gorgeous man. Mate. How is this even possible?
Fate plays with her again when he rejects her too. How is she going to face all the problems life had thrown at her? Will Harmony be done with mates or is she finally getting the love of her life with her second chance?
I’m going to count this as a DNF, because I started skimming a lot at the 50% mark, and pretty much just skipped to the ending. This book is a conundrum. The characters are all young, like 17; they act it, and it reads very YA-ish… BUT they’re dealing with adult stuff, and there are no grown-ups in sight. For example, our H (Trevor) is a 17yr-old HS senior, and the alpha of his pack. (has been for several years) He’s also already been married or mated to his truemate (when he was THIRTEEN) she was 15 and pregnant with another man’s baby, but he said he’d raise it as his own. She died in a car accident, so he’s a 17-yr old, HS senior, pack alpha, widow raising a 5-yr-old, and having relationship drama with his second chance mate.
I get that these kids needed to run into each other, so school did the trick, but then they were juggling grown up problems with kid brains, and that didn’t work for me. They weren’t that mature, so it felt unnatural. The first half of the book deals with the “rejected mate” plot, and (grammar issues aside) I thought it was pretty good, but then all that gets settled around the 50% mark, and it started to drag for me.
Bottom Line- This wasn’t a bad first novel. The bones of the story were good, but IMO it might have worked better if she picked a lane of either ya or na and then adjusted the characters/actions/situations to fit that. I also think the second half could have been trimmed down, so it flowed better and didn’t feel like 2 separate plots pushed together. It is all tied up, so literally everyone gets a HEA, and there’s a cute epilogue five years later.
. Honestly I DNFed this one at 72%. It got boring and I really didn't see why the story kept going.. Probably they'll end up fighting rogues or Aiden will come back and go all nutzo.
Anyways, the first part was entertaining. Every now and then I would be reminded of the age of the characters and roll my eyes and go pffft. It made no sense in any logical way.
It's basically a weird story bereft of adults. A lot of contrived filler. The lack of a good editor is irritating. Roll yer eyes banter that is not nearly as funny as the characters think it is. So Megan is 16 and meets her mate only to find out that Aiden is already in love with her sister Megan (who is not a wolf) and therefore rejects her. The sister, Megan, is completely oblivious. In fact her character had so little depth, she was kinda perma-oblivious.
Harmony goes to live with her uncle and aunt in Hawaii where she meets another mate, Trevor. This guy is 17 and also a douche bag slut. OK here's the backstory on him and it is pretty ridiculous. Trevor met his mate when he was 12 and she was pregnant by another wolf whom she loved. She was 15. Yup, 15 and pregnant and then she and her lover conveniently die in a car crash leaving Trevor to bring up the pup. The pup is a super saccharinely cute plot moppet. So Trevor is a widower single father at the ripe old age of 17. To top it off, he lives in a house with a group of other guys (cousins?) the same age and they all like to joke around with their shirts off. (I take it the author was a team Jacob fan?) The parents were all killed off in some kinda rogue incident. When? What happened to the rogues? No idea. Uh-huh. Hmmmm.
Now drive the short distance to Harmony's Uncle's house on a different pack land. Here you have a couple adults but also a bunch of young guys were hang around without their shirts on. But Harmony is off limits because she is the cousin.
Trevor is a big turd at first as he was so wounded by his first mate when he was 12. Were his parents still alive at that point? No idea.
Harmony is pretty wrecked that she gets a second mate only to have that guy reject her as well. But of course Trevor comes around and then has to convince Harmony that his feelings are heartfelt.
Then Megan shows up as a surprise bringing Aiden with her. Aiden is having second thoughts but the sister is still clueless. Mostly, Aiden and Megan don't feel like a real people. The other boys in the two households feel like cards in a deck. Even Harmony's character is pretty shallow.
So by 72% when Harmony and Trevor have ironed out their shit for the most part, I really didn't see any point in continuing the story. The second argument between Harmony and Trevor was so overblown, it just felt silly. And Trevor felt silly, having turned in his alpha card when he mated Harmony. There's also the miraculously convenient plot twist that Megan is the true mate of Trevor's head enforcer. This may sound like a spoiler, but seriously, I could see it coming a mile away.
Safety is pretty good but not great. Trevor is a manho of epic proportions. When she first sees him across the school lawn, he drags some brunette into the trees for a little nudge nudge wink wink. Then he almost does the same thing after he rejects Harmony. But he couldn't do more than kiss her. Harmony is a GD virgin. I mean she is only 17, but he probably lost his V card at 12 so it seemed unfair to me.

Sigh. Authors need to indicate when their books feature children. In this case, I gave the author a chapter to start a compelling narrative. That was a mistake. I continued hate/reading solely to see how bad it got. The writing style is puerile and the characters are laughably one-dimensional. Words are both misused and misspelled. The story, though, is the most egregious offender. In this AU, age is just a number, as such, the wolves mate, marry, have kids, and are in full command their packs by the time they’re 12. Apparently, a 13yo was the “alpha” of a pack when he met his ‘mate’ who was in a relationship and expecting a baby with someone else? She was 15. Yeah. Uhm. No.
DNF This book was absolutely horrible, total waste of my time, only saving grace, I read it with KindleUnlimited, so wasn't out any money. The author wrote this in an immature way, almost leading me to think the author is in high school herself. There were also a few parts that felt like a different author wrote a few sections, as those had way more editing issues than some other parts. The editing was totally awful, way too many mistakes for a published book! The book has a definite identity crisis, the characters are all youthful- high school or younger at times, but the content is NOT Y/A, with loads of violence & sex. There's a lot that is just unbelievable, like a guy that's alpha of a pack & his true mate at 13! Guys aren't mature physically at 13 to be able to hold an alpha position. Then that alpha is meeting his mate & that mate being pregnant with another guys baby -& her at 15; to that alpha raising that baby (that's not his) after his mate dies cheating on him & he's all still in high school! Then he meets another mate (FMC) & he's a senior in high school! Then there's other girls in the story being mated at 16 & 17, having babies while still in high school... it's just unbelievable & disturbing. Absolutely hated this book! I definitely won't ever read more books by this author.
At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
The editing issues just got worse and worse throughout this book. Shifting between past and present tense all the time. Writing in both 1st and then 3rd person in the same paragraph. Spelling. Grammar. It all detracts from what is pretty much a tick box exercise in shifter story-telling. I was wondering at one point whether this was a badly translated edition.
These are also all just kids. Fifteen year olds being pregnant. Thirteen year olds being mated (which involves sex). 17 year old girls taking on the role of cook and maid to the men. Teenagers leading packs. It all felt a bit ew.
And set in high school. Which was completely unnecessary because it adds nothing to this storyline. Apart from being a central location where both packs cross over.
The world of shifters is an amazing one. The opportunities for angst, desire, explorations of fate and destiny vs choice, insta-love, jealousy, hierarchy are all there for the taking. It was not very well executed here.
I got to 66% and actually couldn’t take it any more.
Not a bad story-line. I originally was drawn in by the rejection of a mate, second chance mate, romance. I was looking for something set in the teen genre with rejection drama and so on. So that part I enjoyed.
I actually enjoyed this book, but I can see why people might not like it. The writing style is a little choppy and it does jump from moment to moment, plus there are quite a few typos.
I personally had an issue with the main characters' being quite annoying at times, especially the female lead, Harmony. There were many moments when she was either too quick to assume what the male character was talking about and just completely jumped to conclusions without letting him explain. She often didn't take his feelings into account, which bothered me quite a bit, by not letting him get a word in to explain/ apologize, yet she would then get mad when he wouldn't explain himself...ugh! In more simpler terms, she was a b****.
That said, I thought the writing was pretty decent and I found it to be a cute, quick and easy read...like a breath of fresh air from all the more complicated and heavy storylines of other books in the YA genre.

Its an easy read with a few emotional moments and lots of aww moments. I loved Cody he is so adorable and Jeremy lol he is a doofus haha I hope we get to read the boys stories too.
This story takes place in Hawaii, though there is not a lot of description of and there were times I forgot. I assumed some of the language patterns were colloquial (hubby is from Hawaii, and we used to live there) but the rest is just a lot of poor proofreading that results in poor grammar, mixed pronouns and verb tenses, etc. The plot caused me problems because there were plotholes and dangling plot elements that are introduced but never really used. The hero is a tosser and a jerk. He bangs anything with a vagina, then tosses them aside while treating them like dirt, all because he has been hurt. He even has the nerve to call THEM skanks.. Well, boo hoo, you punk. That's no excuse. He is really awful. And the heroine? You don't talk like that to a little kid, telling his chief caretaker will get STDs and is "sleazy". You have a beef to pick with the hero, you do it in privacy. Totally not cool. Also, you flirted and pretended to get cozy with another guy, then cry foul and be outraged when it comes back to bite you in the derriere? Hypocrite. I dearly loved the premise of the book, but the execution lacks. While I know the main characters are teens, you want them to be a little out of their element, not willfully stupid. Get a better proofreader and remember that the main characters need to have their personalities shown, not told. The heroine is described as great, fantastic, etc? Show me why she is so. I was shown an immature, often volatile young woman who was often a hypocrite. Not fun.
I first read this book 10 years ago on Wattpad when the author originally wrote this story. And being the 16-year-old I was at the time, I LOVED IT. Now, however? I am SO disappointed.
This is literally a copy and paste of that story. I'm sorry to say, but the writing is poorly done and reads as an inexperienced author writing their first book. When I saw this on Amazon, I thought the author had rewritten the story and gave it a lovely make-over. Sadly, that isn't the case here. There is so much missing from the plot, and the story jumps around like weeks are passing, but at one point the characters talk about how it's only been days. If the author went back and fixed the grammar errors, added more plot to the book and character depth, and just matured the writing, the book would be a lot better. I happened to get this book on a day Amazon was offering it for free, and I am so glad because I would have been mad for spending money on this.
I'm sorry to the author because I'm sure this all seems very harsh, but there should have been so much more done with this book before publishing it. A good example of this is The Kissing Booth by Beth Reekles; I read The Kissing Booth on Wattpad around the same time as this book, and the published book of TKB is MUCH different from what I remember reading on Wattpad. I'm just saying to the author, that if you updated your book, you'd have a more pleasing response from those that are reading this poorly published book and leaving negative reviews. If this book ever does get the overhaul it needs, I’d love to read it then and give a better review.
I don't know why, but as I was reading, Twilight was all I could think of. On the same day, scenes of them in school alternated with scenes in which they were parents or were attempting to become parents. I have to admit that it didn't really sit well with me. That, along with the Twilight stuff, threw me off a little. This contains amazing romance; throughout the course of the novel, emotions had me in tears. However, I wish everybody was an adult. It didn't discuss shifters' pregnancies, healing, etc. like many other authors did, and it read like a YA romance. Thus rendering the genre challenging to follow or enjoy. If the author had truly inspected the grammar and edited for errors before publishing it, I would have given this book more than 3 stars. I frequently needed to read a line aloud to myself two or three times before I understood what she was trying to communicate.
This was cute. The main characters acted a little dramatic, but it wasn't over the top. It wasn't annoying because they were young and acted their age. I would have liked more back story, but overall it was a quick light read. It ended at 85% according to my kindle
Weak plot. Weak characters. I’ve got to stop finding the books from the Facebook ads because the rest of the book feels like either AI or a 14 y/o on watt pad wrote it.
2.5 stars Harmony's life falls apart before it can really begin when her mate chooses her sister instead and breaks her heart. In an effort to move past it and get away from the happy couple Harmony moves to her Uncle's pack in Hawaii, where she learns fate has bigger plans for her, but can her heart take what is in store?
It had a fantastic story line and likeable characters though not throughly developed the issues though can't make up for the strong story line. First of all there are so many grammatical issues it's insane, there is no way this was even proof read let alone edited. The story moves too fast one moment thet meet, fight then are marked within like 3 says. There are some continuity issues. The biggest issue though is the characters are only 17 which would be fine if they were not going through very heavy adult situations *spoilers*
Trevor was only 14 when he met his 1st mate whom was apparently like 16/17 and pregnant. After a devastating crash this 14/15 year old raises a baby that is not only not his but he is in no way old enough to take responsibility for.
They get pregnant still in high school so now they go from 1 adopted son to expecting after only knowing each other for a few weeks.
Aiden wants a teen mistress
Seriously these are still children albeit nearly adults but children none the less.
The continuity issues were frustrating not enough to impinge the story but annoying none the less 1. Trevor met Sarah at 14 and Cody is now five that makes him 19/20 which is too old for high school. 2. Speaking of school, they missed a lot of it yet graduated with out issue a few months later 3. At graduation Harmony talks about who was graduating but strangely Austin isn't one of them so is he younger than them (it didn't seem that way) a creeper who just hangs out on campus everyday? It made no sense. 4. They said that second mates were given when your mate died young or you were rejected, yet, Aiden got one, which was annoying because he didn't deserve a second chance, but more so it also contradicts what they said. Apparently if you don't like your mate just reject them and wait for a new one, not so magical anymore.
Over all I liked the story just wished the characters were older say he met Sarah at 17, Harmony gets rejected at 16, fast forward the 5 years and set it in college for him and Harmony to meet; tada biggest problem would be fixed. And for the love of literature and my sanity edit the poor book.
I would have rated this book higher than 3 stars if the author actually did proofread the grammar and editing mistakes before she published it. At times I had to reread a sentence two or three times to understand what she was TRYING to say.
Harmony meets her mate when she picks her sister up at the airport. They both recognize each other immediately. Until he dismisses her. It turns out that her mate is dating her sister, Megan, a human. Aiden is the future alpha of the pack. He met Megan at a special camp for Alphas and human children born wolves. Aiden decided to pick his own mate, forget about what the fates have in store for him. So he rejects Harmony, and walks away. Harmony can't be around him. She already feels everything that he does with her sister, she needs distance hoping it will weaken their bond So she moves from California to Hawaii to join her uncle's pack.
Moving to Hawaii, Harmony is a shell of the happy girl she once knew. Her green eyes are Now empty of life. She's a senior in high school finishing up her last semester, then she plans on going away to college. During lunch on day, she sees the most beautiful man sitting across from her on a picnic table with his friends. When she asks her cousin, Jared, who he is, he only gives her his name, Trevor, and tells her that he's bad news.
By the end of the day, Harmony is summoned by one of Trevor's men to meet with him. So she is brought to The it's pack house and they talk. Trevor is the alpha of the pack. He recognizes that Harmony is his mate, but he refuses to accept the mating. So she again gets rejected. He explained that he lost a mate before, but Harmony doesn't want to hear anymore excuses.
Trevor's having a hard time staying away from Harmony. When other guys talk to her, his wolf gets mad. But when she pays no attention to him, his wolf is hurt.
But the biggest surprise is when Aiden and Megan come to Hawaii to visit her. Aiden wants Harmony back. He realizes that he can't fight the bond with his wolf. But he only wants her as his mistress. Harmony wants nothing to do with Aiden. Especially when it would hurt her sister. Aiden thinks that he can force her to change her mind, but Trevor gets there just in time to defend Harmony's honor.
Anna Gonzales is a new to me author and I was not disappointed!
Wolfie books are everything for me right now and it was great experiencing something new. I had no expectations going into this. I didn’t know what I was in for other than this being a rejection wolfie book and I devoured this!
Harmony and Trevor were great, Could feel the connection and the chemistry was off the hook. I wasn’t expecting Harmony to be this straightforward head strong character. Usually with rejection books the female that’s rejected is almost always this shy and looked over character until she grows as the story went but Harmony was the opposite and it was refreshing to see. I absolutely love the banter in this book. At times this book had me hollering, I absolutely loved it. I would have liked to see more of the emotional rollercoaster between her and Trevor at the beginning but I still enjoyed how their journey happened. Because of their age I would have loved to see them actually in school more than just the start and then all of a sudden graduating. It kind of just glossed over all that and it was like that for the entire character cast not just the main characters. That being incorporated more would have made the story line make sense more than what it did. I would have also like to see some outside force add more drama than what there was also but it was still a good read. More of a romance I felt than a paranormal romance.
The supporting characters were great, I absolutely love them. Meagan and Aiden however were kind of weird for me in how they ended. I was expecting her sister to have the time to grieve her relationship with Aiden as opposed to how it went down. I feel like it was missing closure in that area but I was also happy that Austin got his HEA. I hope to see more of them in the future so ill definitely be following this author to see what she has coming next. All in all, a great somewhat fluffy rejection wolf book. Great story line with great characters, just a few missing elements here and there but still an enjoyable read.
I originally found My Second Chance Mate on Wattpad and I am glad that author decided to sell her story as an e-book instead on one of those scam apps.
Harmony gets rejected by one mate and moves to a new pack and discovers a second chance only for him to reject her to. When Trevor figures out that he is a royal idiot for not accepting Harmony he tries to fix his mistake. To bad he can’t keep his foot out of his mouth.
I really liked Harmony and her methods of dealing with Trevor, her new pack and her cousin’s friends. Yes, I do like Trevor too, even though he has foot in mouth disease. I mostly liked the story line for the entertainment factor (it was funny most of the time), I do wish the characters were a bit older, but then, it is not my story to write. I really did not like the number of edits that I found as I read the story, and I hope the author goes back to edit then lets me know so I can change my rating. The other thing I was not a fan of was the price, I felt that it was a bit high, especially for the target audience (young adult) who generally don’t have a lot of money.
My biggest concern with this story and others like it, is the message it is sending to young adults, which is the chosen audience for this book. I know, I am wrestling with my own hypocrisy and consciences as I was a teen mom at 15. As I said before, it is not my story to write and the reality is the teenagers are having sex so the author is just keeping it real in a paranormal kind of way. I do think that one of those disclaimers that mention the sexual content, teen pregnancy or other controversial issues should have been added to the blurb as warning to parents whose under 18 child might be interested in reading it.
For some reason I really enjoyed this book. Maybe it's the whole "I've been rejected and am given a second chance" that got me. Harmony is overjoyed to have that connection when she meets her fated mate. Unfortunately her fated mate Aiden is dating her sister. Aiden ends up rejecting Harmony and she moves to Hawaii with her Aunt and Uncle to start over. Her fresh start is pretty much ruined when she has this strange attraction to Trevor, the alpha of a competing pack to her own, new pack. Trevor has his own tale of woe and doesn't want to get mixed up with Harmony.
The book would have been a bit better if the characters weren't still in high school. I get that the author needed a way to bring them together and force the interaction. Being in high school does explain some of Harmony's immaturity and her need for payback when Trevor screws up.
Apparently Trevor became alpha of his pack at the age of 14 which, in and of itself, isn't too far outside the realm of believability. There's just no mention of any adult wolves. At one point in the book it's mentioned that Trevor is responsible for over 250 wolves, yet there's not much of a mention of anyone outside the inner circle. A bit strange but not enough of an overall detraction to the story.
One pet peeve of mine that is included in the book is a hookup betwwen supporting characters that doesn't really lend itself to the overall plot... just another way for more people to get their HEA.
I was thoroughly enjoying this book from the start. The story and characters were very interesting and intriguing. I was all for the twists and punches! I was getting my five star review ready. Then, about half way in, I am not quite sure what happened. One of the main problems I was having with the story was when it was set on one character POV but the author seemed to have conflicts on which way they wanted the character to tell their story. It would switch from second person to third person and even first person a couple times while in that one specific character POV. It was making it hard to understand what was going on. I had to go back and reread several times before finally understanding it was not actually a story issue but an author uncertainty. Once those issues popped up, I had to bring my rating down. Then another issue came up. The writing became almost immature. I was ready to give this a 3 star by this point. But the more I thought about it, I figured I could let it go since I was enjoying the story and the characters were of high school age. The writing eventually got slightly better again and now we are stuck between a 3 1/2 to a 4 star review. I can't really complain more than that. The story did save itself in the end. The potential was immense. It definitely could have improved so much more, but I did enjoy it.
I really enjoyed this adaptation of the werewolf genre. I really liked that there was just enough angst regarding the characters heartbreak but it didn’t make it the primary focus, though the story itself revolves around 2 wolves and their past loves lost , the writer seamlessly engages in their journey of survival and moving forward even though they were faced with heartbreak. It enables the reader to flow through the story and not have to read a bunch of filler material. I also like that the storyline and that of the supporting characters was very intertwined with the main characters. There was just enough dialogue so that you could easily follow each character. This story also flowed very well and was very well written . I also really enjoyed the playful humor between the characters and the love scenes didn’t drowned out the story like in a lot of shifter Romance novels. Anna Gonzales is definitely a writer I would love to read more of!!Highly Recommended!!!
This book came up as a Kindle book rec because of recent obsession with rejected mates.
I was all in at the start enjoying the premise of the plot but sadly there was only so much I could read before the choppy flow and the switch from 1st to 3rd person became too much.
Whilst the characters immaturity reflected their ages, their roles in this narrative didn’t match. Plus, there was a host of unbelievable and over dramatised events.
Everything happened is such a rush and it’s evident that this is a young author’s story so I don’t want to be too harsh or negative.
For what I assume is a YA second chance mate story line there’s a lot unexpected topics like ?Underage sex/ mating bonds at age 12/13 (mentioned as back story) pregnancy in a minor (historical), and single parenting.
I’m not going to push past the 52% mark because I would be compelled to hash everything out in this review.
