Oh screw this book. I’m at least glad we have an author who is clearly hot to draw the love child of a washboard and a six-pack, given how much of this volume Abe spends half naked, and if you like the cover then you’re good to go. Seriously, at least they’re honest.

Everything else is just macho posturing BS and treating women as property and invading their physical space and not regarding them as an equal AND putting forward the very real possibility that Abe could (and does at a couple of points) just overpower Akari if he wanted to.

It really wouldn’t have taken a lot of effort to make this a romance between two evenly matched people, even if they just let Akari score a few points intellectually, but this book is far more concerned with her falling for this obnoxious lummox to make her an interesting character.

He sucks and she doesn’t get any development. It sends an awful message and good lord does it annoy me that this book exists. If you like your manga decidedly on the bad boy side with a helping of ‘when she tries to break up with him this is likely going to turn into something that’ll air on Investigation Discovery’, you might enjoy this. I won’t judge, but I will acknowledge our very different tastes in books.

Unless Abe gets gored by a moose in the opening chapter, I can safely say I won’t be grabbing the second volume of this. I will, however, put it to you that a shojo book with bad leads is operating at a serious disadvantage.

At this point, I’m starting to think that I like to inflict pain on myself by reading all those shojo while I’m not a big fan of them. But this manga is easily among the worst ones I’ve read.

Abe is a first-year who spends half his time shirtless, including at school. Why? I don’t know, it doesn’t feel like everyone wants to see his six-pack. He acts like an animal towards the main character Akari, saying he’ll protect her, he’ll never leave her alone and he doesn’t let her carry things. You know she is a woman, so she might hurt herself.

This manga is plain rubbish, everything is terrible, and nothing is redeemable. I don’t understand how this was even published. It’s degrading for women.

The art is beautiful but he's way too pushy and she's such a doormat. The story is entertaining enough, so I might read more.

This was a fun read!

Not sure what else to say except I've been curious about this one since its one of the few sports shoujo titles that I know of and has been on my radar sense.

I didn't like all of Abe's actions (and was definitely not fond of how pushy and suggestive he is), but it was refreshing to read a very bold and muscular hero. Definitely rare in shoujo manga!

I liked Akari I think! I feel we haven't had a chance to really get to know her as a person who isn't pushing off Abe's advances, but I LOVED her with her best friend! They have a fun friendship!

I would be interested in reading the next volume despite some of my issues with the pushiness of Abe just because I found it a fun way to pass the time!

Even without the art, which is unsettling in ways I can't entirely pin down, this story is...well, I don't think it's great. Neither lead is sympathetic and Abe-kun crosses a whole mess of lines. I'm apparently giving it a second volume, but this is definitely one of the less pleasant shoujo romances I've come across - and since I went through a weird Mayu Shinjō phase, I feel like that may be saying something.

So many reviews are giving this low stars because of Abe, but I’m giving them because of Akari. She’s so annoying.

If you want the most predictable shoujo romance on earth, you can read this. Literally, it’s just “insta-love guy who won’t take no for an answer to the point of sexual harassment, etc.” and “girl who becomes super hot for him in 2 interactions and resists him but can’t stop herself from wanting a dude who does things she doesn’t like.” They don’t have much personality outside of that either. She gets sexually harassed by someone else, he saves her, and then he says he’ll take all her firsts while touching her. Like… 2004 is calling for its manga back. It’s also so boring that they have to add injury and physical action to keep you awake 😭

1* Do not recommend
Warnings for sexual harassment, touching/kissing without consent, attempts to undress someone without their consent

Akari is a high school girl who was going about her business one day and a sequence of events led to Abe-kun, the high school's karate champ, confessing he likes her. Akari quickly tells him that she is not attracted to him, but he insists that he has feelings for her and says he will fight off other men for her affections. He also gallantly declares he will protect her from any threat. She still rejects him. He takes this as a challenge. This is the basic premise of the story. Akari says "no", Abe-kun doesn't listen, he makes overtures, and gets jealous.

The romantic moments in which he is protecting her are ultimately undermined by all the times he pushes her and ignores her rejections. One moment that exemplifies this is at the pool.

If you were to reframe this story with Abe-kun as the sexual predator who the romantic lead who is supposed to defend the main character from (or have the protagonist fend off by herself) you wouldn't have to change any of his dialogue or actions.

To be fair, I knew going into this story that there was going to be an element of pushiness from Abe-kun. I was willing to give the story a try though, because there is always room for character growth. Plus, there are ways to portray a pushy, “alpha” male without making him predator. In this volume, though, Abe-kun acts like the villain and has no growth. Abe-kun might end up learning to respect Akari's boundaries later on in this series and this could turn into a beautiful romance.

Personally, I don't know if I want to invest in further volumes though.

I liked a lot of the storylines and the pacing. I even enjoyed the side-characters and the artwork. The relationship, though, just isn't working for me.

2020 Read #513

I’m on the fence post about this manga so far. The art is very keen on the female gaze, but Abe...is a controlling type of alpha male love interest who just does not inspire much confidence as far as a non-problematic romance goes. Even so, I don’t hate it. But if it goes even more downhill from here...well, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Meh...
I’ll continue this series at some point...maybe later this year. Not overly amazed by it, but I’ve been told it gets better so we shall see!

This is ridiculous, but it's within its genre's limit. I don't like the male lead so I might not read the next volume, but let's see.

I decided to try this because Kodansha recently put the first volume on sale for $0.99, and I'm surprised by how much I liked it. Yes, it has a very pushy love interest, but that isn't necessarily a dealbreaker for me. And this is just so over the top ridiculous that I can't help but enjoy it. Plus I love the starstruck childhood friend. I'm looking forward to see where this goes because it definitely has room to grow.

It’s appalling that this sort of toxic masculinity is being touted as romantic. It’s too bad about the lousy male romantic interest (?) and plot, because the art is cute, and the characters could be charming... plus the Japanese writing is simple, predictable, and has furigana - it could be a great resource for reviewing basic Japanese grammar patterns (from the 1st-3rd year level-ish).

(I think romantic or friendship duos of people of very different sizes can make for a really fun dynamic, as in “My Love Story / Ore Monogatari,“ which is, all and all, a much more wholesome read.)

Only got through four out of six chapters in Japanese (because I ain’t paying to read about a slimy half naked high schooler mistreat a woman). This one’s going in the trashbin.

Even though Abe-kun was hot AF, it definitely unsettled me the fact that he couldn't take no for an answer and continuously crosses the line with Akari-chan. . .
All of this made me really uncomfortable and concerned, but you also have to add the fact that he is possessive and kinda aggressive as well and doesn't improve his attitude or the way that he thinks throughout the chapters.

So, even though the art was really cute that was a no for me.

This is a shojo manga that, like many in the genre, presents a charming yet problematic romantic dynamic. While it's true that many shojo heroes do things that seem cute in the context of the story but would be considered odd or even inappropriate in real life, this manga takes it a step further. The protagonist, Abe-kun, crosses clear boundaries, especially when he disregards the female lead's "no" and continues his advances. This behavior shifts from being playful to uncomfortable, making it hard to view him as a "cute" romantic interest. Rather than feeling heartwarming, his actions come across as possessive and invasive. It's frustrating because the typical shojo fantasy of an over-the-top romantic hero is there, but the line between what's sweet and what's toxic is blurred. For some readers, this might be a dealbreaker, making the manga difficult to enjoy, especially if you're looking for healthy romance dynamics. It wasn't for me either, as the unacknowledged crossing of boundaries took away from the potential charm.

A cute basic idea for the story. But the beginning was way too fast and direct. The start was not realistic at all and therefore rather hard to relate to or even get into it. it continues a bit better but is still rushed a lot and has a lot of crude conversations. But it was okay for the first storyline of the author.

Story 3,4/5
Charaktere 3,6/5
Zeichenstil 4,4/5
Wohlfühlfaktor 2,6/5
Gesamt 3,4/5

2.5* but not rounding up.
I wanted to like this, and it had a lot of the tropes I enjoy but didn't come together in the end. The pace is ridiculous fast--it drops in with Abe going full ham from the jump, so we don't get to know the characters at all. I liked Yae, and that she attempted to stand up for herself, but the pace is too fast and trying too hard to be funny, so she spends the whole volume just reacting more than having any development or foundation for her feelings.

The attempted humor/ridiculousness of the premise tried too hard. It ended up more on the absurd side than amusing for me, and Abe just read like every red flag for future domestic violence and partner abuse. He's more caricature than character.

I wanted to like this series since I’m a sucker for shojo mangas, but there were too many negatives.
I absolutely didn’t like Abe-kun’s behavior; he was very possessive, disrespectful towards Akari’s boundaries, and overall treated the poor girl like an object instead of like a person. I also didn’t like the way that the characters were drawn. These are supposed to be high schoolers and yet, the males specifically were drawn with abs and defined features to the point where they seemed more like college students.

It's a cute read, but this kind of relationship is no way a role model. If you think he's good, that's just as long as it stays in a story, this is not healthy in real life. With that out of the way, I'll continue reading it eventhou there is definitely red flag for the ML. I’m colour blind so… yeah. Like I said it's kind of cute and I'm here only for the fluff.

Too hot'n'heavy assertive for me

I liked the characters other than Abe, the love interest. Takuto was entertaining as the cute childhood friend man-crushing on Abe's buffness. The romance itself was way too much for me, though. While not graphic, the abs and assertiveness and tension felt it was sort of PG smut. Kabe-don and I'm Abe-done.
