ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS POSED TO A ‘DISCARNATE INTELLIGENCE’
Tam Mossman wrote in the ‘Note to the Reader’ in this 1993 book, “Convinced that top-quality writing … deserved a hearing, I founded ‘Metapsychology… The Journal of Discarnate Intelligence’… No topic was taboo… I kept trying to showcase as many talented ‘voices’ as possible---yet some of the most thought-provoking material came from and entity I channeled myself, while sitting at an electric typewriter… in 1975, I drove to Brooklyn to visit a friend I’ll call Greg, who’d been honing his psychic abilities… All at once, I felt my consciousness being ‘dimmed’… My voice took on a new, distinctive accent, and Greg realized he was listening to a trance personality… Our surprise visitor claimed to be ‘Tam’s higher self.’ … [Greg said] We have to call you something. How about James?’ … he’s been James ever since…
“For the next nine years… I did little to explore my contact with James… I never bothered to record what he said… Later, to publicize ‘Metapsychology,’ I made James available to audiences… Many of his answers, I realized, would make great fodder for the magazine, but transcribing the cassette tapes was a slow and painstaking chore. Happily… I found a much simpler way of getting James’s replies on paper. I’d… sit down at that electric typewriter… All of James’s longer essays ‘arrived’ this way, at a single sitting… Can I really be objective about his material? Yes, because while I’m delivering it, I’m only marginally aware of it---and usually forget it a few minutes afterwards. When I finally get to read it…weeks---sometimes… months---have elapsed… I react to it as someone else’s work… I can read his essays over and over with undiminished pleasure…. \
“Metapsychology lost money, and after twelve issues, I had to close it down. Not long after, a … publisher asked me to assemble James’s material into book form… I mailed off photocopies … to various New-Age editors… All of them turned it down… Why, then, am I self-publishing [this book]? … Because I think James has important things to say---and says them in a language that even non-mystics can understand… Readers of Jane Roberts will notice that James uses a number of terms and concepts originally coined by Seth. But that only makes sense: Jane Roberts’s work largely molded my own metaphysical thinking… Nevertheless, James goes on to beak important new ground… Whatever James’s origin or essence, he constantly churns out insights and explanations I could never arrive at on my own… I’ve given James the benefit of whatever doubts I still entertain. And from here on, I’m glad to let him speak for himself.” (Pg. 1-9)
He explains, “channeling at its best… can be compared to what happens when your brain sends a signal to your fingers to type... And ‘unspiritual’ though your unconscious is said to be, yet can transmit concepts of a most divine nature.” (Pg. 14)
‘James’ acknowledges, “I am hardly all-knowing! In fact, my limitations allow me to make contact with you at all. Were I the vast reservoir of knowledge that you presuppose me to be, I could no more fit myself through Tam’s subconscious than could your proverbial rope through the eye of a needle.” (Pg. 31)
He asserts, “Many of you hobble your capacity for financial enrichment---for a number of reasons. Identify your fears and anxieties in this regard, and it will be far easier to ALLOW the influx of material comforts that is indeed your birthright when you take on physical form. If any of my readers believe that money is not a ‘spiritual’ topic, then it is precisely for those readers I am speaking. The more you squirm and feel uncomfortable about material wealth, the more I encourage you to read on!” (Pg. 61) In response to the question, “If our Oversouls are androgynous, why do we have biological genders… this world?’ he replied, “For one reason, it is more fun that way! Gender is yet another means of precise-ifying or focusing in on certain aspects of your total nature…” (Pg. 70)
He asks, “Does evil have an independent existence? If not, did God create disease and war---and the cruelty that so undeniably thrives in the hearts of so many?... In dealing with such dilemmas, your thinkers are more eager to look up one another’s opinions than they are to confront their own private experience… I am not denying the value of the printed word. But unless you perceive books---and essays such as this---as mere springboards… to your own daily experience, then you have missed their true value. You must judge according to your OWN heart, and use none but your own understanding in weighing the balances that your colleagues force into your hands… I have just given you the key to evaluating evil, and also to how it comes about: Evi equals inability..” (Pg. 91-92)
He states, “Here comes the basic lesson Your beliefs---assumptions, prejudices, wishful thinking, and daydreams---are request and invitations. Though this may seem harsh, your fears and anxieties are ALSO invitations. As the ‘host,’ you are responsible for whatever realities you choose to invite through your beliefs. Do not forget to choose, or else your old beliefs out of the past will do your choosing for you.” (Pg. 129)
He asserts, “Your personal destiny is very much like a hike through the woods: The angle and direction of your approach is constantly changing, relative to your final goal. Your overall intent, which is normally chosen between lives, can be accessed by taking a piece of paper. Write down in a column what your highest goods are. Often, they will not be the top of the mountain where you are actually headed. But trail markers, you might say, to steer you on your way.” (Pg. 153-154)
As to why we keep on reincarnating, the reply was, “Why do you go back to the supermarket? We see you leaving with your arms full of goodies, and lo, a week later, you are back again! Of course, the answer is the same: There are specials! If you wish to be present when word first reaches Spain of a new land beyond the Azores, you must needs be alive in 1492.” (Pg. 183)
This book may appeal to some who enjoy such ‘channeled’ books.
