“Fresh and irreverent, funny and relatable, "This Shit Works" is a must read for anyone who's ever died a little inside as they entered a room wearing a name tag.” -Terri Trespicio, writer, speaker, and brand advisor “There's a true gift in these pages to transform how you approach networking. Julie Brown gives you the tools to be yourself and create your power network.” - Paula Rizzo, Author Listful Living, media consultant, speaker The people you meet can change your life like nothing else. Networking is how you meet those people. Not the trading business cards and asking “What do you do?” kind of networking—the kind where you make the most extraordinary connections simply by being yourself and doing things you enjoy. (And, OK, with a tiny bit of homework and a smidge of strategy.) In this refreshingly entertaining and highly informative guide, Julie Brown shares her proven process for building a network. And not just any network, but one made of people • are happy to refer you to new clients• will take your phone call at any hour of the day or nightand • may even just end up going bungee jumping with you in South Africa. Filled with honest stories, perhaps more than the occasional swear word, proven strategies, and targeted to-do lists, This Shit Works is a salty, modern version of How to Win Friends and Influence People.
I've read a handful of books on connecting now. Many of them had connecting experts getting advice from their network. Their information is helpful and wonderful, but what made this one stand out was it centering on Julie Brown's personal experience and what worked for her. It was refreshing to have the information given in a less clinical way. She is hilarious! I also greatly appreciated the vulnerability she shared in these pages. I felt as though I was getting advice from a friend. If you're new to connecting, I'd start here. Julie makes it all feel doable.
I was lucky enough to see Julie Brown speak at a conference and she changed my whole outlook on networking. It really shouldn’t be just about making quick connections that benefit you but about genuinely connecting with potential new friends. This book goes into greater depth about how to do that, how to make it fun, and how far building a network of friends can take you. This will be a great reference book to come back to again and again.
Must read read for anyone wanting to meet more people
This book has great actionable advice for building your network! The tips she shared can go beyond business networking to help build all types of relationships.
This book is filled with great, real-work advice that has actually stuck with me. While I'm 100% introverted in my personal life, practicing Julie's strategies -- focused on relationship building rather than card collecting! -- I now consider myself a "professional extrovert."
