The neighbor called it in because the house next door, normally empty and silent, at two AM was a blaze of light, with people shouting and car doors slamming, like gunshots in the night. Until he heard two reports that echoed down the dark, silent street and spoke of death, two reports that were not slamming doors, but gunshots.
That was when he called it in.
What the cops found at the scene was a house with the doors open and all the lights on, and the body of April Olsen lying on the floor of the cellar with two gunshot wounds in her chest.
But the weird thing was what they found beside her: a hole in the concrete, six foot long and three foot wide, and inside it the mummified body of a man who’d died thirty-five years earlier, shot twice in the chest with the same gun that had just killed April Olsen.
Was it the controversial Professor Allen Bernstein? Or was it somebody Bernstein had killed before he fled to Mexico?
Either way, it was now a cold case. A case for Stone and Dehan.

So when you are looking at a pile of books, needing to choose your next read, and none of them seem quite what you want, where do you turn? For me it's easy - Blake Banner.
Dead and Buried is exactly the same as the previous 23 books in the series - short, smart and very entertaining. Of course the crimes are different in each book and they are always well thought out and original. There is also a little character development along the way but not too much. Dehan and Stone are fine just the way they are.
I have nearly exhausted this particular series with only two more published. Hopefully Banner is currently writing more but if he doesn't he has a couple more series which I have been reliably informed are just as good. My go to author seems secure for now.
If you are interested in this book, I suggest you go back to the very beginning. You need to understand how these characters have evolved. I love a good series and, man, this IS a good one. I’ve been a bit unhappy with some story developments and hope to see them resolved. To that end, I’m gonna read every single new book that comes out. This is a keeper.
Read all 24 books during the pandemic 2020 and looking forward to the next installment #25 whenever. I have a library card now also so I have read approximately 100 books during COVID,! Yikes I need a life😂
Solid murder mystery w a lot of characters & many moving pieces
Detectives Dehan & Stone have a cold case—a mummified man buried thirty-five years ago—plus a dead woman whose blood has yet to congeal. The murder suspects and red herrings were Columbia Uni students back in the 1980s—when they did drugs as though it were the ‘60s. Nostalgia may be a good thing, but not when a murder results. It’s worse when the coverup fails, and more murders result.
For a short book of 170 pages, there seems to be more secondary characters than usual to keep track of, but I managed without a cast list. Dehan & Stone also take their show on the road to Washington DC, Arizona and across the border to Mexico.
NYPD Cold case homicide detectives Stone and Dehan respond to a homicide call. At the location is a recently murdered female along with a mummified body recently excavated in a hole in the floor of the cellar. From there a unique and bizarre list of potential suspect's unfolds. Tenured college professors and a well known civil rights attorney all with a history of drug Expermentation during the hippie culture of the sixties. Some of them still dwell in the past and the primary suspect has moved on, then returns to the up loose ends. Enjoyed immensely!!
This was a great story about two detectives in New York City working on a cold case crime. The detectives have a few leads and follow them until they were able to crack the case. New York City police have paired these two detectives to solve the case which leads to them going to Mexico to look for the criminals. This was an interesting story about in a city that is full of intrigue.
Murder and mayhem with humor and suspense - what could be more fun?
These stories are so easy and quick to read, with characters you wish you could meet and get to know (at least a couple of them are). Others are the kind of folks that make you glad they're fictitious. Love the humor!
I'd given up on DCM for a bit bc we got off track of what I loved: cold cases. But when BB sent me a deal for one of the books, I found the next one in line that looked like a cold case and jumped back in.
We're definitely back on track. The combination of today and yesterday in this book keeps you going. Fun read
Dead and Buried is Book #24 in the Dead Cold Mystery series by Blake Banner. Great series. Cold Cases. Crime and investigation. Mystery. Suspense. Detectives. Police procedural. Intrigue. Tension. Dramatic developments. Action. Engrossing. Would make a great TV series.
Again, Blake puts out a stunner, although I found one small error, unless I missed something. Not going to tell you as it will be a spoiler. But, more twists than a pretzel. I’ve read. Them all and can’t wait for number 25. 😁
I have to admit that this book was a bit tough to get through. It seems the author takes the phrases from his previous books and just changes the names and the situation.
With that said that does not mean I won't be reading anymore, just taking a break for a while.
Like usual, thorough and logical but difficult to scope out ahead of the end. Interesting throwback to the time of the hippie. Tim Leary would have been proud as would Charles Manson.
This time I wasn't aware of the results until the last chapter when Stone came with the knocking answers. Read it now! And don't blame me if you are so shocked as I. Monica Beltrami. Montevideo, Uruguay.
As I type this, the Goodreads average rating is 4.46 stars -- I'd say that's astoundingly accurate. A lot less of the annoying "writing in British" than in the previous entries, but somehow it just doesn't quite reach the 5 star level.
Meh I called it again! Also Dehan was nowhere in this one and let's face it I dig her more than Stone even though he's a genius. Surprise me Blake I dare you...
I am enjoying the antics of this couple. Between them they always figure out the bad guys. I'm also glad they got married but the author keeps their romance low key.
