I must say, this is one of those books which you need to gift yourself. Do yourself a favor and read it. I recently read Chasing Perfection and realized so much. Chasing Perfection reveals the life-changing steps fitness and lifestyle expert Rachel Brooks took to overcome depression, negative body image, and eating disorders, to break free of the past and start living a fulfilling purpose-driven life. Her no-nonsense approach, with simple personal growth principles and fitness strategies, will empower you to improve self-confidence and change your life. . . . It's a very short book but it's sure to provide value in anyone's life. I think the way it's written and brought out is extremely simple and understandable but also on the other hand it's very impactful and presents as a direct heart to heart talk with the author. It's a book that not just interacts with it's readers but also will help them for sure. I definitely had a great time reading it and feel, it just should not be missed. Go for it, it's highly recommended, it's for all. . Rating: 4.5🌟
Chasing Perfection is a self-help book that serves as an invitation to assess how past perceptions and behaviors shape present and future outcomes in life. In this regard, consideration is given to assessment of behaviors by others who may have influenced one’s personal view of themselves. Brooks suggests that it is one’s personal view of themselves that determines self-worth and confidence level. Yet, what stood out as a game-changer for me is the influence that leaders and parents have on a child’s perception of themselves that could have long-lasting impact well into the adult years of the child’s life. To that end, Brooks provides an example where a child is shamed for gifting a generic Barbie doll. To quote, “She told me how much she loved the doll as her mother sneered in front of me, ‘At least, you have a real Barbie to play with.’ What kind of person, let alone a mother, would belittle an already embarrassed child in front of her peers?” This was a great segue into Brooks explanation of how getting to the root of who you are, forms the basis to heal the wounds that hurt the most. Overall, Chasing Perfection promotes assessment of the good and the bad, the bitter and the sweet, by understanding who you are, accepting that you are enough, and by ultimately dispelling others’ ideas of who they think you should be. Brooks provides research to support findings, personal examples that may be relatable, and clear recommendations to achieve positive outcomes.
All of us have heard “Nothing is ever Perfect” but still in our heads we desire everything to be perfect. “Chasing Perfection: A Journey to Healing, Fitness, and Self-Love” as the title suggests is a self help book with a very catchy title. The cover on the other hand suits the theme of the book and I feel is perfectly relevant. It’s the author with a very happy and charming smile. So, I would give it a total if 2/2 for cover and the title. Talking about the content of the book, the book is basically a self help book which has experiences of the author and she is sharing the lessons she learnt which covers almost every relevant aspect of life. Talking about the content I would like to mention my personal experience. While reading the book I was internally inspired and It was a very different vibe I got from each Index number of the book. The most important lesson which I learnt after reading the book is that there is no secret/hack/trick to be happy, it’s not like you would be happy when you achieve something a perfection may be but you can be happy every minute, every second of life. This book really changed the way I see things now. Most importantly the way author has shared/written the book it doesn’t feel like you are reading a self-help book. I felt like I was part of the authors life and trust me I was also trying to find what if I was in such situation although some of the things/situations mentioned in the book were very relatable. So, for the content I would say it’s a 2/2. The language and the words used are pretty basic and easy to read. Also, the book is not a long read at all. The writing and the editing were also greatly done. I didn’t face any difficulty while reading the book. So,I would give is 1/1 here. That makes it a great read. I would like to thank the Author for her lessons and for giving me such an experience through the book.
You don’t have to relate to the personal experiences of the author to be motivated and inspired by them. We live in a day and age when women are struggling with loving themselves, treasuring themselves, and staying positive about their body. The unrealistic portrayals in the media of most celebrities have done their harm. Even though this is the perfect gift for a teenager or a young woman, older women can learn a lot from this self-help book as well. It’s never too late to learn how to love and appreciate yourself.
The book goes into eating disorders, abuse, self-doubt, depression. For most of us, it is very relatable, as everyone went through at least one of these problems at one point. Actually, it might not be a bad idea to have your husband/ boyfriend read it as well. Men have a lot to learn from entering the mind of a woman and seeing raw emotion and struggles.
You should put this on the gift list for an important woman in your life!
This is the story of an average person growing up near Buffalo, NY. Among other things, she experienced real depression, eating disorders and negative body image. Her mother was not a very good female role model, so the author depended on the women she saw on TV and in the magazines. She thought that she could acquire the "perfect" body by becoming a fitness competitor (and then everyone would like her). It didn't work, and it also led to a major back injury that ended her competitive career.
After lots of soul searching, the author began to turn her life around, to forget about "perfection," and discover what worked for her, both physically and emotionally. She reveals the time-tested plan in this book.
This is a very honest and heartfelt book. For anyone who is convinced that no one knows what they are feeling, this author has been probably been there. If she found the way out, perhaps this book will help others to find their own personal way out. This is very much recommended.
Rachel throws light on such realistic things that Challenges are a part of everyone's life but how we deal with them actually matters . The ups and downs a person faces makes them strong and confidence..
Very wonderfully she has expressed how her own struggles and complications in life made her even more conscious in choosing rights and wrongs .
The story makes you learn that everyone doubts his/her inner strength and capabilities at one point or the other but that doesn't mean you have to live with that doubt. You have to rise and step above all these thoughts .
Honestly this book provides hope to people , it's inspirational, motivational and full of simplicity. The relatable content made me even more interested in reading this book.
I would recommend every person to read this book for once and realise the true meaning of discovering oneself , and learning how to handle your own fears and insecurities in life.
Really enjoyed reading this book. It was an honest journey of the author fighting her personal demons that had haunted her for most of her life. The book is an intimate retelling of a struggle to regain her personal control of her life. Usually do not read this type of book but found it inspiring and uplifting for women battling self image and the various disorders including eating and a number of mental and health issues. The author pointed out her being out of control in life effected her private life. The book is not a recipe book to solve every woman’s problem but it did help one. Truly enjoyed reading this book. Unexpected gift.
Everyone should read this book. It is beautifully crafted, the words were chosen carefully and the flow is on point from start to finish.
Self-help is not my typical genre, but I loved this book! Rachel skillfully crafted this story using her journey through life, which touches on many topics that almost anyone could relate to. The lessons are straightforward, motivating, and easy to implement.
She effortlessly gets to the heart of something we can all relate to...feeling less than. Her book drives home the point that you are enough and happiness is not linear. Overall amazing book, I highly recommend it!!
A Self Help book about abuse, self abuse, self doubt, eating disorders from a woman's point of view but with lessons for the male species as well. Each chapter describes events that cause a person to respond with doubt about her appearance and moreso, what others think of her. Gradually, through coaching, mentoring and love from a husband she becomes a winner to herself and lets us evaluate ourselves through her "points to ponder" in each chapter. Even though it is through a woman's perspective, it still deserved the five stars from me, a male.
Rachel Brooks had me crying. This self help book hit on so many negative things I've thought about myself and addressed a situation I've avoided thinking about for most of my life. Truthfully, I saw this book listed on a Goodreads giveaway and felt an impulse to enter it. I don't enjoy self help books. They always read like a textbook to me, but Chasing Perfection was different. It was a book I needed but didn't realize how much until I was bawling my eyes out in the bathtub reading it. Thank you for writing this book, Rachel Brooks. By sharing your journey, You've helped me.
A well-written book where the narrative flows off the page like good poetry. The author is raw and transparent about her journey, perceptions and emotions. Honesty is weaved within the tapestry of one woman’s journey to healing, fitness and self love. Relatable, even for us guys, and the points to ponder at the end of each chapter succeed in cementing the details revealed along the journey.
I won a free Kindle copy through a goodreads giveaway. Thank you very much! A beautiful book. Brooks' journey is incredibly relatable. She takes us through a life with a critical mindset shift that is something I think most of us strive for. I enjoyed the book.
This book really goes through a personal journey, and it effectively walks through how we can not just get new good habits, but rather, it provides in a subtle way a useful toolkit in developing new normals in our lives. Well done overall.
I think the message here is to know yourself and only once you do, you should work on improving yourself. Don't confuse eternal rewards with internal ones. There is a good positive message here.
Before I read this book, it was like another one again, but by the time I covered few chapters, I was all in it and just reading, the fitness part of this book is so grounded and on point. Developing my mindset was another hit in this book. Thanks to the writer..
