مارکس در واپسین سال‌ها مروری است بر سه سال آخر زندگی کارل مارکس. مارچلو موستو با بررسی‌ نوشته‌های سال‌های پایانی مارکس نشان می‌دهد برخلاف برخی افسانه‌ها او به هیچ‌وجه کنجکاوی فکری‌اش را کنار نگذاشته بود. او در این سال‌ها به مطالعات عمیقی درباره‌ی یافته‌های تازه در انسان‌شناسی، شکل‌های اشتراکی مالکیت در جوامع پیشاسرمایه‌داری، تحولات در روسیه در پی امحای سرف‌داری و زایش دولت مدرن پرداخت؛ و همچون تمام طول عمرش در حال پیگیری رویدادهای مهم سیاست بین‌المللی و حمایت از جنبش‌های رهایی‌بخش بود.
«مارکس در واپسین سال‌ها خودمانی‌ترین دوران او نیز هست: شکنندگی‌اش را در زندگی پنهان نمی‌کرد و در عین حال به مبارزه ادامه می‌داد، از شک طفره نمی‌رفت بلکه بی‌پرده با آن روبرو می‌شد، به‌جای پناه بردن به قطعیت نظرات خود و استقبال از ستایش نسنجیده‌ی نخستین مارکسیست‌ها، پیش بردن سریع پژوهشش را برگزید. این مارکس یکی از آن تبار بسیار نادر و از بیخ‌وبن شورشی است، سراسر متفاوت با تصویر ابوالهولی مرمرین که به یقینی جزمی به آینده اشاره می‌کند.»

Marcello Musto is Professor of Sociology at York University (Toronto – Canada) and is acknowledged globally as one of the authors who has made significant contributions to the revival of Marx studies over the last decade. His major writings comprise four single-authored books, eleven edited volumes, and more than 50 journal articles and books chapters. Among his authored books there are Another Marx: Early Manuscripts to the International (Bloomsbury, 2018); and The Last Years of Karl Marx: An Intellectual Biography (Stanford University Press, 2020); while his edited volumes include Workers Unite! The International 150 Years Later (Bloomsbury, 2014); Marx’s Capital after 150 Years: Critique and Alternative to Capitalism, (Routledge, 2019); The Marx Revival: Key Concepts and New Interpretations (Cambridge University Press, 2020); and Karl Marx’s Writings on Alienation (Palgrave, 2021).

Si concentra davvero troppo sulla continua lotta che Marx deve condurre contro le sue malattie per continuare a scrivere e studiare. Dopo un po’ è ben chiara la sua forza di volontà ferrea, la necessità intellettuale inaaggirabile, il pensiero forgiato nella lotta contro le condizioni materiali disperate ecc… alla lunga non aggiunge molto e stanca. Viene meno un approfondimento più arioso e diluito su quelli che sono i concetti e le analisi che muovono gli scritti. L’esposizione di questi è sigillata in un unico denso capitolo, da una biografia intellettuale mi aspetto una combinazione organica.
Ben descritta l’attività politica e organizzativa di Marx.
