Layers Deep

Rate this book
There are layers beneath the surface.
The year is 1888. Secrets begin to unfurl when Frank Forester arrives to court Sarah Lawrence. His idea to stay turns into a need to get her out of town. At each turn, surprises arrive. The trip to the ranch does not go as expected and Jacob Forester also finds things going wrong. He’s agreed to ride with the Rangers once again, and ends up meeting Taylor Daniels. She’s young, vulnerable, and heading to see her Aunt Bess, who he knows is the owner of the saloon in Clear Creek. Jacob understands she doesn’t know, so he offers her work at the ranch. The fact that he finds himself wanting to take care of her creates another problem. If his sister was home, instead of traveling to meet her new husband’s family in Oklahoma, things wouldn’t be such a mess. Nothing goes as one thinks it should, except for Gregor who seems to always anticipate trouble.

This was a fantastic sequel. I loved the sense of family and culture (the Forester family blending with Darkmoon and the other Cherokees). The author does a great job at taking relatively simple things, like a wagon ride or a conversation around the dinner table, and bringing such life and humour to them that they feel very real and entertaining. This book contained lots of suspense, from an overprotective, selfish father to an outlaw attack. I generally don't read romance, but this is one author that does it so well that I can't resist.
