Develop a powerful practice of deep relaxation and transformative self-inquiry with this essential guide to yoga nidra, accompanied by downloadable audio meditations.
Yoga nidra is a practice devoted to allowing your body and mind to rest while your consciousness remains awake and aware, creating the opportunity for you to tap into a deeper understanding of yourself and your true nature. At its heart, yoga nidra is about waking up to the fullness of your life. In Radiant Rest , Tracee Stanley draws on over twenty years of experience as a yoga nidra teacher and practitioner to introduce the history of yoga nidra, mind and body relaxation, and the surprising power of rest in our daily lives.
This accessible guide shares six essential practices arranged around the koshas, the five subtle layers of the the physical, energetic, mental, intuitive, and bliss bodies. It also offers shorter, accessible practices for people pressed for time. Each practice is explained through step-by-step instructions and ends with self-inquiry prompts. A set of guided audio meditations provide further instruction. Feel a greater sense of stability, peace, and clarity in all aspects of your life as you deepen your yoga nidra practice and discover its true power.
My first Goodreads Giveaway! Radiant Rest is not a book to read cover to cover, but it is a companion to guide you through your lifelong practice of Yoga Nidra. Author Tracee Stanley provides several deep relaxation practices and accompanying self-inquiry prompts to bolster one's awareness and to deepen the practice of rest. She places each practice into context, providing history of Yoga Nidra and goals for specific practices. Having never heard of Yoga Nidra before reading this book, I am now very excited to incorporate these practices into my spiritual journey. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to deepen their yoga practice or to those who think they don't have enough time to rest.
I won a copy of this one in a Goodreads giveaway. This was my first attempt at exploring what yoga is in order to see if it was something I might be interested in. Stanley does a great job with the descriptions - the terms are clearly defined and the information is outlined succinctly. It was very easy to follow along and understand the presented concepts and ideas, which is exactly what you'd want to see in an introductory book. That being said, after reading this book, it seems like this isn't the type of yoga that I'm looking for. However, the fact that I was able to go to a single resource and get sufficient information to make that determination speaks quite highly for the book. I'm glad to have read it.
Tracee Stanley did such a beautiful job with this book. It is a great book for beginners to the practice of Yoga Nidra, a guided meditation on the art of transition, and is read by the author on Audible which is just beautiful. My restorative/yantra/yoga nidra teacher, Chanti, co-teaches larger trainings with Tracee, so I have been following them both for quite some time with always a continued awe in the continued giving and gifting of their teachings.
The first section of the book gives a nice overview of the history of Yoga Nidra, and the current schools and teachers of the practice. The middle of the book is the philosophy and kosha, or layers of the practice and how it relates to the book experience of emotion, and the senses...my favorite part. And the ending contains multiple guided practices that will allow the reader to start to understand more about the structure and purpose do the sequence (although nice to hear on Audible, I always do dislike guided practice within books as I am usually driving or dog walking and have to stop the audio or skip over it until I can get back to it, but...).
After falling in love with the practice of Yoga Nidra in 2017 my life began to change in the most profound ways. My mind started to realize just how fast it had been moving for the last entirety of my life up to that point, how tired I felt all the time, how busy and goal-oriented I was. It has been a long four years of paring life down, of slowly slowing down, but this practice of guided meditation is now a thread of my life.
Stanley describes a crucial piece of information in the middle of this book that other books on Yoga Nidra have not expounded on that I found. She talks about intergenerational trauma and depression and the ways that we may help to help it release with the sequential nature of teaching the body how to transition. When I was teaching Yoga Nidra I used to describe it as a practice of transition...from the beginning of the day through the middle and into the end and again...as we are able to practice this technique in a safe and more controlled environment lying down we can begin to see the change affected by the mind when it is confronted with chaos.
If you want a really in-depth look at the practice with more science I would recommend Yoga Nidra by Kamini Desai, but this is a really great starter book for beginners and always a great review for more experienced practitioners.
I loved this book! It was extremely accessible as someone with no history of practicing Yoga Nidra. Tracee includes tools for people of all body types and experiences. She includes specific details on how a student with PTSD might benefit from a certain yoga practice space or “nest,” as well as students who might be pregnant or not able-bodied. She also includes details and support for those practicing who might be incarcerated and unable to access extra pillows or a lot of space. Her work is tailored to individual need while also considering the history and community from which practices stems.
I absolutely LOVE this book. From the beautiful illustrations to extremely restful written practices, I feel this book is a must-have in your collection. I have trained under Tracee Stanley and this book made me feel like I was back in the same room as her and her guidance. This book makes you feel connected to the practice and all that it offers, yet, it is straightforward and easy to digest. That is the magic of this book. It brings the practice of yoga nidra into your life in a beautifully real and attainable way.
I’m not going to rate this because I didn’t engage in the practices as they’re outlined. I think there’s a lot of value in this book and yoga nidra is definitely something I’d like to study more deeply. I’ve done some guided meditation yoga nidra practices and they’ve been a game changer for my sleep, especially now that I have a newborn!
Really admire Tracee Stanley’s work as a yoga teacher and enjoyed the discussion of how to incorporate slowness into your day to day life. Haven’t tried any of the practices yet but looking forward to it!
A lovely book with a rich array of practices and support for deep rest. It is obvious that the author is a practitioner of the practices and not just a newly minted teacher. Brought another dimension to my own yoga nidra practice and guiding.
Loved this! A thorough, heart-centered treatise on the power, purpose, and practice of rest. Also, a lovely sourcebook of practices for practical, soul-nourishing use. I especially appreciated the sections on the householder’s flow.
This book was NEEDED in the world. Tracee has delivered a pure gem to all who seek the amazing experience of practicing this healing modality - whether they have heard of it before or not.
I have studied, practiced, and led yoga nidra experiences for groups of people and I can tell you that there is so much desire in the world for this healing and rest, but so far the books I've come across on the subject have had scripts to follow or are focused on the science of rest. In contrast, Tracee wrote an inviting book that allows you to start to feel the ease and desire to embrace these practices in a really informative, respectful and lovely way. The experience of reading her book transmits the essence of yoga nidra.
Tracee wrote a book that gives you the experience of being in the presence of this practice. It's informative, inspiring, and full of magic. Just staring at the images can invoke so much.
I love yoga nidra. On a basic level, when I practice I feel my nervous system calming down and my physical body releasing tension in a way that doesn't happen with traditional sleep. And this is just the start of the benefits it provides. It continues to heal the layers of the body, including the conscious and unconscious mind.
I'm really looking forward to spending more time with the audio practices included with the book. The glossary of terms, extensive practices, and her self-inquiry questions make this book a companion that will continue to guide and support me.
Today’s Book of the Day is Radiant Rest, written by Tracee Stanley in 2021 and published by Shambhala.
Tracee Stanley is a teacher of yoga nidra, meditation, Tantra, and self-inquiry. She shares practices and effective tools that help her readers create awareness of their innate wealth, beauty, and interconnectedness.
I have chosen this book because, teaching Yoga Nidra myself, I was curious about how other teachers and practitioners practice it.
Tracee Stanley’s Radiant Rest is a good guide to an effective, enriching practice of Yoga Nidra; the book is an invitation to a profound exploration of consciousness and well-being.
Yoga Nidra, often referred to as yogic sleep, is a profound state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. It is a guided meditation technique that involves deep relaxation and a focused inward journey. Practitioners fully relax their bodies while their minds remain alert and aware.
The teacher leads participants through a systematic process that makes them aware of the different parts of their body, using controlled breathing, visualizations, and affirmations. During this profound relaxation, the mind becomes calm and receptive to promote internal exploration, understanding, and transformation.
The practice is all about letting go of each kind of mental, physical, and spiritual tension, allowing our entire being to rest and relax while the practitioner is at the same time the subject and the object of his/her own workings.
Yoga Nidra creates a perfect safe space for healing, change, and personal growth by restoring the correct energy balance, reducing stress and anxiety, and cultivating inner peace and gratitude.
In a world that is perpetually rushing somewhere, the book presents a compelling point about the life-changing power of calm and stillness.
Stanley brings together ancient wisdom and contemporary insights, thus giving her readers suggestions on how to find and walk the path to inner peace.
At its core, Radiant Rest is about reclaiming deep, restoring rest as one of the vital components of our lives. In the capitalistic culture the West is stuck, often dull productivity is equated with personal worth. Yet, the author challenges this notion, suggesting that true fulfilment lies in finding a balance that works for each of us.
By delving into the history and key ideas of Yoga Nidra, Stanley provides a rich background context to help her readers understand the practice by making it accessible and easily practicable.
Stanley’s writing style is at the same time informative and evocative. She invites readers to embark on their personal journey of self-discovery with not just a theoretical exploration but giving them step-by-step instructions and experiential exercises.
Beyond the physical benefits of reduced stress and improved sleep, Radiant Rest highlights the profound, positive impact of Yoga Nidra on our holistic well-being. By cultivating a state of conscious relaxation, practitioners gain valuable insights into their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. This will help them to develop a healthy, worthy habit of personal growth.
Whether one is digging deeper into the concept of yoga nidra or starting fresh with the concept, Tracee Stanley makes the practice feel like poetry for the body.
“I am as vast as the dark night sky, both empty and full, I surrender to grace.”
As an example it starts with this promise about the mystery of the practice, she also writes:
“If you have ever floated in a sea of stars, or felt that you peered through a wormhole into another dimension, during yoga nidra, you know what I mean.”
To be honest I haven’t felt this in yoga nidra but feel drawn to the mystery of the practice. Stanley offers basic definitions and insight about a practice that is traditionally known as sleep for the yogis. It feels compelling when she describes the practice as ”transcendent, cosmic, and divine.” In addition to writing in a poetic form she matched yoga philosophy and tradition with recent science insights on the stages of sleep.
The book has six yoga nidra scripts and offers self inquiry about our current night time sleeping practices. Under the Moon practice offered in the link below is a mini yoga nidra practice based on some teachings from the book. I strongly recommend this book as a way to deepen your understanding of yoga nidra.
I actually read this earlier this year, as a student in a training with the author and Chanti Tacaronte-Perez. Tracee Stanley radiates calm; she chose the perfect title for this beautiful, wise and instructive book. Appropriate for both beginners and experienced practitioners, Radiant Rest offers deep insight into the practice of relaxation, self-care, awakening and spirituality that are at the crux of Yoga Nidra. Complete with self-inquiry opportunities, illustrated warm-up postures, and scripted practices, this handbook lives at my side so that I can use it when I need some self-care (ie, every single day!). I am forever grateful for all I’ve learned from Tracee and am so thrilled she compiled her knowledge into this gorgeous, accessible book.
I had listened to Yoga Nidra style meditations before, but I had no idea what the practice was really about until I read this book. Tracee Stanley explains the practice in the most engaging and approachable way, and thanks to her, my reverence for sleep and rest has already grown in immeasurable ways. The way she presents self-reflection questions, guided meditations, and tools for incorporating aspects of Yoga Nidra into regular daily life makes this practice seem not only possible but also vital. The book includes so many resources, too! I'm really looking forward to what will unfold in my own brand new practice.
“I’m resting for all the women on my lineage that never got to rest”
I happen to own an Alo moves subscription and I tried a yoga nidra practice on one of many sleepless nights. To date is the only thing that never fails on helping me sleep.
Although this book was a very pleasant read and fulfilled my curiosity on yoga nidra, it is not only a guide to the practice but an exploration to our relationship with rest, and the stories we may have internalized regarding why we can’t have it or we don’t deserve it.
As many, after the pandemic I ended up burned out and exhausted, yoga nidra and this book have been invaluable on my quest to prioritizing rest.
This is a goldmime for anyone who is committed and wants a manual to ease into the practise or get deeper into it. Wonderful and comprehensive, and the languages+visuals are very soothing. I'm not at a place where I will practise as I borrowed the book to learn more about this form of yoga. However, I will return to this book if I ever want to practise yoga nidra in depth. Only thing to consider is that although the book is wonderful, personally I prefer to be guided with audio recordings. I have yet to bridge the gap towards being able to internalise the teachings/practises, then proceed myself.
Lots of great information, easy to digest with lots of examples, practices and prompts for journalling to help keep track of your progress.
As someone who has always been interested in spiritual and witchy traditions and practices, I found a lot of the information here gave that feel. Working with ancestors, moons, the elements.
Although I enjoyed it and got a lot out of it. It did sort of make me feel like this is something I needed to do every day or I would fail. I think that was just my interpretation of it. And I think the intent was more so this should be an every day thing.
And although that is always the goal, there needs to be some flexibility for when life happens.
Tracee understands how to hold space for practitioners as a teacher, and understands what it is like to still *be* a practitioner, a student- always learning.
This book explores rest practices, how to do them, why to do them, and if approached with an open and willing heart will bring forward personal transformations. 🦋
So grateful for Tracee's generous, thoughtful, and wise work. Add in the softness and golden design of the book itself, and Tracee's recorded practices and this book is a full experience just waiting for you!
this book is a an outpouring of love, and right on time to encourage the shift from pushing ourselves too hard resulting in exhaustion & over exertion, to allowing our mind body and soul to rest, and therefore awakening our power. the methods & teachings she offers through this book are divinely guided & delivered with such grace. even if you have little or no experience in yoga nidra, these practices are deeply effective & accessible. highly recommend!!
Wow. This is definitely a keeper and one to reflect back to often. I was blown away. I got this as a giveaway winner. When I got it I started it and laid it down. Then I picked it up again and couldn't put it down. When the student it ready the teacher will appear!!!! Good to read through and now going to actually work the magic from inside. I love this. And the cover is amazing. Velvety soft.
Picked up this book because of its dark, velvety cover, but yes the content attracted me too and it surely did not disappoint. The language used was so beautiful, and I enjoyed every chapter thoroughly. If you're a yoga teacher and you're looking to refine the cues you use in class, I'd recommend this book! For friends who are interested to find out more about deep rest (note: not sleep) and the methods to do that, this is a great starting point.
An absolutely stunning book in every sense of the word; beautiful poetry, illustrations, wisdoms, sequences, breathwork and warmly written. This is a book I will pick up again and again to reread and enjoy the yoga nidra practices. The world really needs this comforting book at this time and I just loved the practices, connection with nature, self reflections and journalling. The easy part is really the book and the hardest part is doing the inner work but it’s totally worth it!
Whether you are a dedicated meditator or someone who wants to learn more about Yoga Nidra, this book is for you. With plenty of history and terminology, poses, and six basic practices to follow, Yoga Nidra is explained by an experienced practitioner/teacher. With a website with the author guiding you through the six practices, this is an excellent source of info whether you want to keep the book as a valuable reference or just read it once.
There is so much here. I think this is a reference book that you can return to again and again. I would recommend a hard copy, as opposed to digital (which is what I have), so it can be accessed without the imposition of a screen. The screen feels intrusive to me when trying to learn a practice of rest and relaxation.
This is a real treasure, this is a highly preferable book for those who would like to practice meditation in the world of Yoga Nidra. Written in a very intelligible and easy to follow structure Tracee Stanley leads you from beginning to end into a place we all want to be. A place of peace and contentment. Highly recommended!
This book is such a beautiful offering to the yoga community and is so needed! It’s trauma-informed and extremely accessible… making it an amazing resource for both beginner yoga students and those who have been studying and practicing yoga for years and even decades. Will be recommending it to everyone I know!
Great overview of yoga nidra! I especially loved that the author acknowledged many people would have trouble fitting a full yoga nidra practice into their daily lives and offered plenty of relaxation tips for every lifestyle. Also loved that the 6 full yoga nidra practices are available for free in audio form. This is a book that I will continue to reference in the future!
