James Montgomery Boice was a Reformed theologian, Bible teacher, and pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia from 1968 until his death in 2000. He was also president and cofounder of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the parent organization of The Bible Study Hour on which Boice was a speaker for more than thirty years.
This was an excellent treatment of Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians by the late James Montgomery Boice. The narration by John Lescault has taken some getting used to, but it’s worth it. I’ve learned a good bit from this series of audiobooks.
Great Expositional Commentary by a great pastor, author and theologian. Boice handles all of the difficult doctrines in the book in a manner that is easy to understand.
This is not a verse-by-verse commentary. That said, it is very good. Boice does a really good job with overviews of each section. And, he often brings out thoughts from a different perspective. If you're a pastor preaching through the book of Ephesians, he is good for a quote pretty regularly too!
I read this commentary because of the author. Previously I read James Montgomery Boice’s commentary on Phillippians which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also enjoyed this commentary on Ephesians. It is a good expositional commentary and ideal for devotions through the book of Ephesians. I appreciated that it was practical. I have seen other reviews saying that it’s not exegetically detailed but I think it is not fair to expect an exegetical commentary when the intent of the commentary is expositional. While there are other commentaries on Ephesians that are more exegetical than this one (I think the best is still Harold W. Hoehner’s exegetical commentary) I think it is still worthwhile for the exegete to consult Boice’s work to help with thinking about the application and delivery of the content of Ephesians to God’s people. Boice did bring out good lexical insight from the meaning of certain Greek terms in ways that are very insightful. Read this to warm your hearts for God in light of what He has done for us in saving us.
While there are some good nuggest in here, overall it is quite basic and doesn't go as deep as any commentary on Ephesians should. A lot of Boice's notes are typical, but I'm sure anyone who reads it will glean from it.
Boice's commentary on Ephesians is very practical. It reads like a good sermon, filled with practical applications, interesting points, and pertinent illustrations.
