In the aftermath of Rimuru’s ascension to Demon Lord, his friends and allies are taken aback by his newfound power, but even more shocked at the return of the dreaded Storm Dragon, Veldora. Meanwhile, the other Demon Lords are all too wary of Rimuru’s evolution, which upsets their delicate balance of power and seems to be a harbinger of greater struggles to come...
Rimuru is now a demon lord! You've just gotta love his character. So humble, and unsure of himself most of the time, yet wields an increasingly vast amount of power. His loyalty to his friends and subjects is incomparable, and he goes as far as doing everything possible to even bring back the dead. Wow!
And the big ones... Veldora - the Storm Dragon, and and an Archdemon, have both been unleashed on the world by Rimuru!
With Rimuru's ascension to an awakened Demon Lord we see those that he has become allies with in the past have come to his aid after word got out of the Falmuth invasion. However the fact that Rimuru is now a demon lord and how he managed to make the requirements could be a problem if the wrong ears hear of his tale. With being a volume less steeped in action and more in political (and for Clayman possibly mental) manipulation this book is setting the boundaries and showing the faith various factions have with the newly ascended Rimuru. What more we not only see the return of Veldora (now in a human form) in this volume but also the arrival of Erald Grimwald, the Archduke of the Sorcerous Dynasty of Thalion who also happens to be Eren's overly protective dad. :)
Now with various faction working out their plans we get to see some of who is working for who and get some ideas as to some of the big players as they are revealed for the first time so we have much to look forward to in the future.
So there wasn't really an awful lot happening in this volume - it's primarily set-up for some big things to come, and some surprise antagonist reveals (dun dun dunnnn), but the most important thing really is that Veldora's BACK AMONGST THE LIVING! ;D
It appears as though things will be getting serious again next volume, after this (mostly) lighthearted instalment, and I'm excited to see where things are headed next. Especially as it appears we may be meeting all(?) of the current demon lords at some sort of summit thing...
Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy)
There's one more round of power-creep. With Raphael's augmented abilities, Rimuru fulfills the first promise he made to his first sworn friend in this world. Tempest just got a massive power-up (not that it was lacking in power in the first place though). Rimuru turns towards analysing his newly-evolved and newly-acquired skills. These moments are usually a bit lacking in the anime, but I guess it'll take too much screen time to go through all of it.
And the "game world" just got expanded too, as we now get a reveal on Clayman's background, how the harlequins are connected, and a surprising mastermind behind the mastermind. Old and new allies show up as Rimuru makes preparations for getting back at Clayman's interference.
Veldora returns! But not quite in his former glory as being 'eaten' by Rimuru has cost him his physical form. In spirit form, his magicules will eventually disperse until he's no longer the Veldora we know. Solution: Rimuru makes Veldora a vessel. So now we have a very old and powerful storm dragon inside a mid-20s humanoid body with the social skills of a five year old. He loves manga and I love him.
But that aside, there's some politics to smooth over since Rimuru's rise to the status of Demon Lord, not to mention the very concerning plot involving Clayman, Frey, a puppetized Milim, and a super secret mastermind underneath EVERYTHING!!
Volume 17 is going to be AMAZING!!! The final chapter with the meeting of the leaders and representatives of the various nations; who hopes to stand a chance of winning a war against Rimaru with his all-star team. Valdora, Dwargo, Elwin, the Kijin, the Dryads, the Hobgoblins, Dire Wolves, and Rimaru's butler Diablo; the Western Holy Church doesn't have a prayer.
It was really fun to read about the meeting between Rimuru and the rest of the diplomats from all of the friendly kingdoms that Jura Federation has come in contact with. And I do love that most of them show concern about Rimuru becoming a demon lord and his actions when the Kingdom of Falmuth attacked. The interactions are really cool and interesting.
Veldora released from his imprisonment! Been looking forward to this. My favorite little nugget from this volume is when, keeping Veldora occupied, Rimuru provides him with manga. The book we see him reading is Detective Doyle, a play on the Detective Conan (Case Closed) books, which happens to be the other Manga series I'm reading right now! Neat, right?
And Veldora is back once again. I wonder what he would be like in a battle? With all the plots going on between the Holy Western Church and the other Demon lords plus all the alliances and the like things are getting complicated. But through it all we get to see Rimuru grow as a leader and that is fun to see.
Lots of set-up but no real development. Some reveals but the big one was muted since it took me a while to remember who a key figure was; there are a lot of characters. Also not a ton of real personality for most.
