Midnight Spells (Witches of Hollow Cove, #2)
by Kim Richardson
This book was a lot better than book one. This has Tessa being accused of murder and then someone trying to murder her! She has to try to solve the murder and stay alive at the same time.
In the meantime, see sees a ghost goat that saves her life! Lol! No one can see the goat but her.
Pretty exciting and good story.

Midnight Spells is book two in the Witches of Hollow Cove series by Kim Richardson and narrated by Devon Sorvari

Tessa is accused of murder and someone is also trying to murder her. She has to solve the murder and stay alive. A ghost goat is hanging around and only she can see it. What does this mean?

I enjoyed listening to Midnight Spells. I very much enjoy the audio and find that the audio moves the story along. Tessa finds herself involved in the most bizarre situations and somehow finds a way to get out of them too.

I wasn’t expecting the twist on who to blame for everything that happens. I will say Tessa was a bit reckless in this one. At times I like her and other times I’m frustrated with her actions. I do enjoy a strong personality, but I also find it frustrating. She didn't stop and think. She just jumps in and damn the consequences.

I do have to say her Vampire Friend is a hoot. He brings levity to the story and lights things up. I really enjoy him.

As for the romance, we finally get that first hot as sin kiss, but nothing after that. We focus on the murder mystery. To be honest, I get mixed signals about the romance and I’m not sure if Marcus likes her or not.

Also the Aunts are a lot of fun. They don’t try to rein in Tessa, which at times I think they should have. They do add humor to the storyline.

Audio: I’m enjoying the audio for the Witches of Hollow Cove. I find the voices fit the characters. The pacing is nice. I plan to continue the series in audio. Hopefully my library has them all.

Overall, I enjoyed the cozy mystery in Midnight Spells.

I felt that something was missing in this book - maybe more laughter?

Despite that I enjoyed it. Tessa as always gets involved in the most bizarre situations and just as often manages to get out.

I didn't expect who was the person to blame for everything that happened at the festival, let alone that Tessa was so reckless in attacking him under those circumstances.

Although there was action with Marcus, I'm still missing more. Plenty of time to keep that tension going.

Let's see what Tessa and her aunts' next adventure has in store.

This book was a bit better than the first. The characters feel a little more complete, but I did still find the mystery very obvious.

One notable change, Tessa bothered me a little less. I mean, she still has a ridiculous temper and likes to fly off the handle. But I guess it's like with a friend, you learn to accept less likable traits in favor of positives - in Tessa's case, I do like her loyalty to her family and friends.

As with the first book, I did have the whodunnit figured out from pretty much the moment the crime happened. Along the way, we meet a new character - Iris - that I liked a lot and learned a bit more about Tessa's Aunts, making them a bit more 3 Dimensional.

The narration also seemed better, which makes me think it was (as I wondered) less about the narrator and more about the content in the first book. No one's voice really bothered me this time.

Midnight spell is the second book in the Witches of Hollow cove series by Kim Richardson.

Tessa goes to a Night Festival with her aunts. Someone ends up dead and Tessa is the last one to have see her alive. So sure most of the town thinks she's the murdurer. As the investigation is going on, things goes worse and its more confusion between Tessa and Marcus.

I have received and arc of this book from the author. I have really love this book and can't wait for the next one in the serie.

An invisible goat, a magical circus in town, what could possibly go wrong? A murder of course. This book was a bit better than book one, the characters are starting to shine on their own and a new character joins the team. Overall it’s a good cozy magical read

Just like the first book this is a fun read. Not a deep or overly complex book but a good take your mind to another place. I’ll admit I didn’t realize this is part of a 24 (!!!!) book series when I started it but since I’m enjoying it I’m glad there is still many more books to go.

I get it, you’re witty. But come on. Give me some depth, less quips. The character is almost 30. Sardonic thoughts and banter are a okay but come on girl..

3⭐⭐⭐

Tessa had never heard of the Night Festival, her mother never brought her here for the event. She's excited for the festivities that is until her aunts introduce her to the New York Merlin Group. They aren't happy her aunts made her a Merlin without doing the trials. They also appear to have a goat with them. Unfortunately for Tessa she's the only one who can see it.

With Ronin's help she escapes from that group and goes to have her fortune told or really to see if the goat is a good or bad omen for her. That whole reading gets a bit bazaar and from there things get worse when the seer Marvelous Myrtle is murdered. An eyewitness puts Tessa at the scene before the event and Marcus has to detain her for her own protection.

Mad at Marcus and determined to find the real murderer Tessa meets nothing but resistance from everyone she tries to question about Myrtle. Left with no choice she decides to break into Marcus' office to read his file on her. She finds that and something far more intriguing, her own file.

She also accepts a date with a very eligible bachelor Adan who she runs into as the Merlins investigate the theft of all the festival funds from Gilbert's Grocery.

Let's just say that date didn't go so well, and that black and white goat saves Tessa's life. She also believes she's figured out who killed Myrtle, and finds Gilbert drunk over the robbery since a very valuable artifact was stolen as well. The Elder Ring is a dangerous thing in the wrong hands. Although Marcus just says he'll look into the possibility Winnie killed Myrtle, he is happy she doesn't want to go on another date with Adan.

Now nothing could be that easy and things become unraveled pretty quickly. There is so much that leads up to solving both the murder and the theft.

There is plenty of suspense, surprises, laughter, tears, and what do you know, there is a romance, more than one actually!

Tessa and her Aunts go to the festival to have a good time. Tessa and her Aunt run into witches that make her want to leave. She seems something no one else sees. Tessa and Ronin are walking when she sees a seer's tent. Things go don't go well with the seer. Tessa and Ronin decide to have some fun. Tessa sees Marcus walking with another woman, she doesn't want to address her emotions. Tessa hears a scream, she runs towards it. Tessa can't believe who is dead, now she is a prime suspect. Tessa is upset with Marcus over his handling of the situation.
Tessa decides to keep looking into the murder, it is her name on the line. Tessa finds out she is not welcome anywhere. Tessa also has admirer that she finds attractive. Things get worse when someone tries to kill her. Tessa also sees something that questions her family, will she be able to get answers.

This was a good read, you will enjoy the story. Tessa is still trying to learn her magic, what being a Merlin means. Things are still at a push/pull with Marcus. I gave a four stars because I figured out who it was early one due to a scene and the follow up. The way Ronin acts with another character, just seems pushed. I still really enjoyed the story, look forward to the next one.

“Midnight Spells” is a great follow up to book one in the Witches of Hollow Cove series. I liked this read much better than book one because, Tessa, the main character wasn’t as childish and bickering as in the first book.

This time the town of Hollow Cove is getting ready for their annual five night festival known as Night Festival. Three witches from the New York Merlin group are in town and they are one too impressed with Tessa. As a matter of fact they refuse to acknowledge her as a member unless she submits to the Merlin trials. Additionally, Tessa keeps seeing a little black and white goat that no one can see but her. Hmmm, disturbing.

When Tessa goes into a seer’s tent to have a reading the woman freaks out and then asks her to leave. Later, the seer is found dead. Since Tessa was the last to be seen with her she is now suspect number one as well Hollow Cove public enemy number one. So, Tessa does what any self respecting witch would do , she investigates the murder.

Mayor Gilbert is up in arms when the money from the festival is stolen. Adan, the handsome man whose family donated a sizable amount is interested in Tessa. He asks her out quite to the ire of Chief Marcus.

This read has plenty of twists and turns as well as quite a few surprises and I enjoyed every minute of it!

„Midnight Spells“ is the second installment in the “Witches of Hollow Cove” UF series by Kim Richardson, whose female MC (Tessa) is a witch in the early thirties, who after trying without luck to made it New York, came back home to Hollow Cove to live in Davenport House the family state, with her three eccentric aunts. As part of the new situation Tessa begins to work in her aunts’ agency ‘The Merlin Group’, a magical version of a P.I. office, that is always under the fierce scrutiny of Chief Marcus, who is not exactly amused.

The annual Night Festival in Hollow Cove (which lasts for whole five days), is the perfect opportunity for all things that go bump in the night, actually go ‘bump’ during the Night Festival 😉. Tessa just got her life together, just before she is the suspect in the killing of the seer, she just visited. Now, she would have to investigate the murder and find the real culprit to avoid ending up in jail forever.

“Witches of Hollow Cove” is a fast-paced UF series, that mixes eccentric witches, a supernatural town population, the occasional mystery, and a snarky heroine into entertaining mix of murder mystery, supernatural UF and chick lit.

Book 2 of the series was just as good as the first, and the author is very good at her craft. I like that she makes her characters so colorful (in terms of you can feel the emotions) and relatable. The story almost felt like a stand alone because it was a whole new adventure but you definitely need to read book 1 to know everything that's going on.

With that being said, my reason for a 3 star rating is - the story does not capture my attention like other authors where I can't put it down. Normally I can finish a book in a 1-3 days, this takes me close to a week because I only read a chapter at a time. I also hope that it's not the same set up every single book, I see there is a some things going on in the background and the overall plot is developing but so far the M.O. is the main character fighting a bad guy that she somehow miraculously wins - its got to get better than that.

Anywho I will continue reading the series and see how it goes.

I love this series! I was wondering how this book could be better than the first and it definitely was. Tessa and Marcus are back. It’s been a month since Tessa moved back to Maine. Now she’s in the hot seat being accused of murder. The town turns on her and now her aunts think she’s crazy because she’s seeing things no one else can. Things also are heating up more with Marcus. I couldn’t put this book down. I was aggravated every time I had to stop reading for any reason. This is a definite must read and definitely read the 1st book before reading this one. I can’t wait for book 3! Kim Richardson definitely has a gift. The only thing that would’ve made it better was Marcus’s point of view in some of the scenes.

Night Festival

Some sort of power play between the New York and Hollow Cove MERLIN branches, a goat only Tessa can see, a fortune teller who is traumatised by whatever she sees and who throws Tessa out... accusations of murder when the fortune teller is discovered dead in her tent... and Marcus marches her off for questioning despite her protestations...

A robbery, a curse or two, a saviour she saves from her own cursed life... with most of Hollow Cove believing she's the killer Tessa has one choice to clear her name... solve it herself...

Still find the writing style weak, it jumps, poor conversation and the consistency is lacking... if she'd been living in New York with a high-flying corporate lawyer for 5 years, and got herself 50k in debt, she would most definitely have more than a single dress from GAP... come on...

Laugh out loud antics and magic galore!

I absolutely loved book 2 in this series. Tessa and her very funny Aunts kept me laughing and giggling with everything they did and said. They are a unique family that knows just how to keep the humor going in dark situations.

Then there’s sexy Marcus, who you just want to lick all over. The sexual tension between Tessa and Marcus is growing and I can’t wait to see how combustible it gets!

I loved the new characters and I can’t wait to learn more about Iris.

The story is thrilling, suspenseful, a definite page turner. It kept me fully captivated and highly entertained from beginning to end.

Always brilliant writing from Kim Richardson. I can’t wait for book 3 to see what Tessa and the gang get up to next.

I love the characters of this town. Tessa is so wonderful, as well as her vampire friend Ronin and her three crazy aunts. And when are she and Marcus going to admit they like each other? But when a seer is killed soon after Tessa visited her, she becomes the number one subject. After being interrogated by Marcus, she later sneaks into his office and learns something disturbing about her past and her life. Has she been lied to her entire life? With a killer in town to find and her life in danger, she has to concentrate on the investigation, but then she needs to ask several people in her life some hard questions and get the truth about what she found in Marcus’ files. Good

When the Night Festival comes to Hollow Cove, Tess finds herself accused of murder, something she doesn’t take sitting down.
Out to prove her innocence, she runs across all kinds of trouble.

This book picks up where the first in the series left off, with Tess beginning to get comfortable living at Davenport House and she is no longer on the outs with the hunky security chief Marcus.
We meet a few interesting new characters, run into some annoying old foes, and learn just a little more about some of each.

Since it’s part of an ongoing series, we do have a number of unanswered questions by the end of the book, that hopefully will be answered later!

An enjoyable and magical trip back to Hollow Cove, that fans of paranormal mystery and urban fantasy will enjoy.

I was entertained by book 1 and slightly more entertained by book two. I picked up this series because of an ad on Facebook, which led me to believe there would be some romance in it. I’m okay with a slower burn but I was expecting some more info about Marcus. Right now I feel like there’s been more connecting us with Ronin than Marcus. I was hoping with Tessa’s fiery temper that there would be some flames sparking but so far no luck there. I’ll read the next one to see how that goes, if nothing else these are books I would recommend you listen to while working a puzzle or doing diamond art. It’s fun enough to keep your interest while not being so involved that if you zone out for 5 minutes you feel like you’ve lost the plot line.
