She’ll care for you. Until you’re dead. When Maureen falls and injures her ankle, her daughter Alva is convinced she can no longer take care of herself and is determined to get her some help – which comes in the shape of local caregiver, Dolores. Maureen tries to say no, she’s fine on her own, but it’s not so easy to get rid of Dolores. She seems to be everywhere, poking her nose into every corner of Maureen’s life, implying to Alva that her mother is getting senile and will soon need constant care. Maureen feels as if she’s under siege 24/7. And she knows in her heart that there’s something not right about Dolores… But no one will listen. Then one of Dolores’s other charges dies in mysterious circumstances and Maureen realises she may be fighting for a lot more than her independence. Because once Dolores has you in her care, death may seem like a sweet release. The stunning psychological thriller, perfect for fans of K. L. Slater, Teresa Driscoll, and Andrew Hart.

Frank, Elizabeth, Maureen and Dolores are all members of a retirement club. Frank's son Michael, is a drug addict. It's well known that he steals to fund his habit. Michael finds his dad dead from an overdose and quickly becomes the prime suspect.

This story will mess with your head and make you think about what happens to us as we get older. It's filled with lots of lovely characters and a couple of not so nice ones. There's a few curve balls in this well plotted story. Thenoace is steady as the tension builds. It was nice to read a book that was based on the elderly .it made a nice change. The story is told from Maureen and Michael's point of view. It's also a book you can't say too much about as it would spoil it for other readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Inkubator Books and the author Jackie Morrissey for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Although this book started a. Little slow, it soon sped up and I ended up really enjoying it. For one thing it was a nice change to read a story featuring older people. Let’s face it, they don’t get much attention from fiction writers. And for another, as a slightly older person myself, it was frighteningly realistic. I could see this really happening. And I have read enough reports of elder abuse to know it is real.

When her 80 year old friend, Frank, dies Maureen comes under the sway of his former career, Dolores. Maureen doesn’t like Dolores as she is a very pushy and bossy woman who barges her way into people’s lives and takes over. Maureen has also been speaking with Frank’s son, Michael. Although Michael is a heroin addict he is not a bad person and he has convinced Maureen that Dolores is not to be trusted. However, Maureen’s daughter, Alva, dismisses her concerns and tells her how ungrateful she is - Dolores only wants to help! Alva believes Dolores when she says Maureen is starting to get confused and frail. As Maureen doesn’t like confrontation she goes along with having Dolores as her career for a while as she tries to work out how to get rid of her. But soon Maureen is struggling to marshall her thoughts and is always so tired. Is she really going downhill as everyone thinks? As. time goes by though it becomes clear that Dolores may really have a nefarious agenda. How can one little old lady, whom everyone thinks is losing her marbles, fight back?

I thought this was very well done and quite heartwarming while still having a sense of approaching menace as the book progressed. The characters were really relatable and the suspense really ratcheted up towards the end.

Maureen is independent and has several friends at a retirement club. When she hurts her ankle her daughter Alva thinks she is helping by getting Dolores to look after her, but Maureen is adamant that Delores who was looking after her friend Frank murdered him, whereas the police are investigating his son Michael who is a known drug addict.

Dolores is such an easy character to hate with her bossy ways, always interfering and taking over. You know a book is good when a character fills you with such rage that you could hit them!!

Maureen is a great character. It makes a change to have a story based on someone more mature. She is battling to look into Dolores’s past, but is her life in danger?

For me this started slowly but the suspense soon builds into a chilling conclusion.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

What surprised me was the pace of the book. This is a crime thriller which has to do with a group of elderly people and a crazy seriel killer and instead of being a slow, drawn out affair, it is a fast paced, roller coaster ride! This book is not a who dunnit type because here the readers already know who the culprit is from the beginning; the book is more about how one of the elderly MC, Maureen refuses to become yet another victim and with the help of her murdered friend's son, manages to get the upper hand of the killer in the end.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Inkubator Books and the author for the e-Arc of the book.

When the truth is the fiction, then the fiction becomes larger than life. This was a difficult book to review as the story was so close to the realities of life that it had me breaking out in sweat.

Maureen was an independent woman, but a fall and damaged ankle made her vulnerable. Entered Dolores, a care giver appointed by her daughter Alva, and things changed. A death of another senior citizen under the care of Dolores caused Maureen to become paranoid as things started happening with her too.

My first book by the author, Maureen was one gutsy gal. She rocked my boat with her courage and logical analysis. I felt sad when her suspicions were swept under the carpet. With an unlikely ally, I liked how she took charge of her life to bring the truth to light to daughter Alva.

The author brought to light the current situation where people took advantage of the vulnerable human beings, whatever age they be. The social issue was well enveloped by the suspense building up in the story. I kept egging Maureen in the entire book to move faster. Yes yes I knew she was elderly, but this was just me tapping on my kindle screen.

The characters made me react, some made me want to bop them on their heads. Actually, all of them deserved a knock or two. The last few pages brought out the final reveal, linking all the plot lines together.

As I said, a fun read but which highlighted the real plight of the vulnerable.

It was hard to not read this book in one sitting.
A rather frail old lady.
A daughter with a busy job.
A grandson who is leaving the country.
An old friend.
A young junkie.
And a well-meaning caregiver...

... makes for a great story about the resilience of people and not to forget: determination and cleverness. Maureen may be frail, she's still sharp and by no means 'an old doddy'. Frank dies way too soon, Alva and Ross mean well but are unaware of what is happening, but the star of the story is Michael, who really tries to better his life.
And Dolores, of course. Horrible Dolores.

It was sometimes hard to read what was happening, especially because no one believed Maureen just because she is old. My mother is 85. And believe me, if she would say something about her carers, I would believe her. Nothing wrong with her mind. I'm very glad Maureen won, in the end (I don't think this is a spoiler. Usually the bad person doesn't win in a book...).

Thanks to Netgalley for this digital reading copy.

Dolores is a caregiver in Dublin. She's hiding her past and finding that she quite enjoys taking care of people.....

Controlling them gives her a feeling of excitement and pleasure. When the patient is to the point they can't do without her help..... that's when Dolores gets delirious with joy.

Maureen is her newest client, recently hurting her leg. Dolores actually likes Maureen ... she'll be fun to break.

This one terrified me! Just thinking about all the people who depend on strangers to take care of them ... what do you really know about these people?

The tension starts on the first page and stays steady until the very last page. The conclusion is surprising and unexpected. There were moments of heart-pounding anxiety. The characters are deftly drawn and get under your skin almost immediately. It's well written with twists and turns planted here and there.

Many thanks to the author / Inkubator Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

The scary aspect of this book was that the plot was perfectly plausible. An elderly person in need of a carer can often be helpless and vulnerable, as we see with Frank and Maureen in 'Before I Die.'

I found this quite slow and almost gave up but I am glad I didn't. I think we can all agree that we like a good villian in books and that Delores the caregiver from hell fits the type (what is it with Delores' in books that make them great villians).

I would recommend this to anyone.

Before I Die had a super interesting premise with really well-defined characters. However, the "twist" that I've come to expect from the end of books from this genre never came. I guess I was left a bit disappointed with that. The book is great with building suspense & there is a sense of foreboding in every chapter but without a twist. I came to love Maureen as I progressed through the book, Alva - not so much!! I liked how Jackie Morrissey builds every character in the book. It was scary how she's shown how a person can completely insert themselves into the life of a senior & start ruling before you know what's happening. Most scenes in the book seemed very accurately real so this definitely added to the menace. I would have probably loved the book more if it did something unpredictable in the end or turned my assumptions on their head. This book is simpler in that aspect but that should not be deterring to anyone wanting to pick this up. I loved the general plot & characters in this one.

Thank You, NetGalley, Inkubator Books & Jackie Morrissey for an arc!

Thoughts: You know those books that make you wanna scream at the characters? This book was one of them. I would yell out of frustration (albeit in my head) from what I wanted the characters to do or out of anger for the evil character. I started this book without much expectation. The premise seemed okay and I thought it might pass the time as I was looking for a simple thriller. I was happily surprised and really enjoyed it. One thing I liked about this book was that the main character was an elderly woman but she wasn't portrayed as just a weak old woman. While there were weak moments, the main character, although old, was one tough, vibrant fighter.

Plot: Maureen is an old lady that lives on her own. She has hurt her ankle which prevents her from getting around as she would like. Dolores, a much younger lady who is a very overzealous, persistent, aggressive caretaker.
The thing about Dolores is there is something that just isn't right about her, something seemingly sinister. She always pops up and takes over even when the person doesn't want it.
After, Maureen's elderly friend, Frank, mysteriously dies, Maureen becomes suspicious of Dolores. Only problem is, Frank's drug addicted son has been accused of the murder and Maureen's friends and family thinks that she has been showing signs of delusion and confusion. The story takes on a cat and mouse game with Maureen trying to out Dolores but Dolores isn't going down without a fight.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. This was my first read from Jennifer Morrissey and I would be interested in reading more from her.

Before I Die is a thriller of a story that has been done before but that reality doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of reading yet another retelling of an angel of death story. An angel of mercy or angel of death is a type of criminal offender (often a type of serial killer) who is usually employed as a caregiver and intentionally harms or kills people under their care.

Maureen is an older adult who is independent and has a zest for life on her own terms. She has a busy professional daughter and grandson about to partake in a gap year watch to over her, although Alva does worry that her mother is getting too old to be alone after she had a fall and twisted her ankle severely, resulting in Dolores, a somewhat overbearing carer working for her neighbour Frank coming in and checking on her, much to Maureen’s chagrin. Frank, who has a drug addict son, confesses to Maureen that he has discovered that it is not only his son but also Dolores is stealing from him and he is planning on firing her and changing his will (in which Dolores is a major benefactor) but the day after this confession Frank is found dead from suspicious circumstances. All speculation falls to Franks son Michael because who would ever suspect a long term carer of such a thing, but Michael protests his innocence and accuses Dolores of the unthinkable. After uncertainty and contemplation, Maureen begins to believe that the finger of accusation should indeed be pointed at Dolores, but her thoughts and statements of such are brushed away as invalid, the harmless missives of imagination on overdrive. And then Dolores suggests to Alva that perhaps Maureen isn’t actually capable of looking after herself, creating circumstances that paint Maureen as falling into the darkness of dementia. Then begins a cat and mouse game in which the stakes are high for both Michael and Maureen. Will Maureen be able to prove her suspicions against Dolores, is Dolores truly innocent, wanting only the best for the elderly old woman or is there something more sinister at play?

In this novel, the confusion of the elderly, the overprotectiveness of the children, the desperation of all the players is written about in a stark manner that leads to the reader’s stomach being bound up in knots. The older adults are well crafted, not just parodies of what society thinks of in terms of its older generations, but real and vital and proficient in living life on their own terms. Dolores is written as a wonderful actress, capable of both kindnesses and of real cruelty, the darkness and light played out well in her character. Maureen is smart and snappy, but her fears are ignored by younger people simply due to her age, something that happens all too often in our busy modern society. The novel is scripted in such a manner that memories of such true-life crimes are brought to mind in the full horror of insight and understanding for the reader. The doubt and ambiguity of guilt and innocence never leave the reader until the end of the story.

An enjoyable read.

If there's one thing that I like doing it's discovering new authors. Jackie Morrissey is certainly a new author for me. I read the synopsis for 'Before I Die' and it certainly sounded like the sort of psychological thriller I particularly enjoy. I wasn't wrong either because I really did enjoy reading 'Before I Die' but more about that in a bit.
I liked the character of Maureen. She is a strong and determined lady, who finds herself incapacitated by an ankle injury where she comes across the 'delightful' (note the sarcasm) Dolores. Maureen is pretty clued up and she realises that there is something not quite right about the overbearing Dolores. She tries to distance herself from Dolores but Dolores always seem to find a way through. Maureen is a very kind and compassionate lady. As for Dolores, well what can I say- other than she is a total nightmare and that she might as well have had a big alarm bell over her head because every time she appeared in the story, she made me cringe and sent a shiver down my spine. She is a highly dangerous, predatory and manipulative individual. What happens? Well for the answer to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
Oh my goodness, 'Before I Die' was a highly enjoyable read. As soon as I started to read, alarm bells started to ring and my 'safeguarding' hat was put on. (Not to bore you too much but in a former work life I used to work for what is now the Disclosure & Barring Services, which is to protect children and vulnerable adults, so I already had some knowledge about predators like Dolores). The more of the book I read, the more I wanted to read and the more desperate I became to find out how the story concluded and so the quicker the pages were turning. I just had to know if Dolores was going to be caught. In a way, Dolores reminded me of a certain Dr. Harold Shipman for reasons which should become clear. I soon raced through the story and then all too quickly I reached the end of 'Before I Die'.
'Before I Die' is really well written. The synopsis is guaranteed to grab your attention and then Jackie draws you into the story. Once Jackie has your attention she will not let you have it back until the moment you read the last word on the last page. Not that I wanted my attention back. For me, the story is perfectly paced- it started with a bang and then the story was a bit of a slow burn, which was perfectly fine as it helped to build up the level of tension in the story. This slow burn led to a tense and dramatic conclusion. I really did feel as though I was part of the story and I found myself become very emotionally involved in the story. I know that ''Before I Die' is fiction but I find that if I enjoy a book to the extent that I enjoyed this one then I tend to 'live' the story as if it were real. Whilst reading this book, I wanted to jump into the book's pages to give Dolores a darn good slap with a wet flip flop before frogmarching her off to the police station.
In short, 'Before I Die' was a tense psychological thriller with more than a twist or two. I really enjoyed reading it and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will be reading more of Jackie's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

I thought this was a well written thriller.

Maureen isn’t happy that Dolores is caring (if that’s what you call it) for her. Dolores isn’t a nice person and Maureen needs to have her wits about her.

This is one of those stories that you know could happen in real life so it’s kinda creepy in that sense. Can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.

Before I Die is a thrilling read, but is one that in no way makes me look forward to my twilight years. In fact this story down right terrified me! Jackie has crafted a plot straight out of one of my nightmares. It opens with a harrowing prologue of the worst kind and which sets the chilling tone for the rest of the story. It is one that opens your mind and makes you want to stand up and protect your elderly loved ones even more and to make sure you listen to what they say.

The story follows Maureen who is proudly and fiercely independent. But when she has a fall and hurts her ankle, her daughter Alva enlists the help of caregiver Dolores, convinced that her mother can no longer look after herself. This causes much angst between the two women, which is not helped by Dolores’ getting in Alva’s ear trying to convince her that Maureen is becoming senile. But Maureen becomes afraid when her friend Frank dies unexpectedly whilst in Dolores’ care and is convinced that Dolores murdered Frank and that she could be next.

The characters in the story are well developed and although I can’t say I liked them all, they all play out the roles they have been given perfectly. I really enjoyed Maureen the most and Michael who is Frank’s drug addicted son. Although at the height of his drug use he was utterly despicable to Frank, he really bands together with Maureen and steps up as they form an unlikely friendship with one goal and that is seeking out to expose Dolores and her crimes.

As for Alva, I actually loathed her and the way she treats Maureen. She classes her mother as a nuisance and barely can bring herself to listen to her concerns and continually fobs her off. On more than one occasion I wanted to reach into my Kindle and give her what for. I just felt anger towards her every time she came up in the story. And then there was Dolores, or the devil as I like to refer to her as. She is in a league all to her self and is one psycho that has more than one screw loose! As much as I disked her, I have to say that she really has been written as the perfect villain.

Jackie has a very easy style and has done a really good job with this book. She cleverly builds up the tension and suspense throughout and on a number of occasions had my heart racing. She was able to keep me engaged which is a must and although the subject matter at times was hard to take in, it has a satisfying conclusion. Before I Die is a good solid read and I look forward to more books to come from Jackie. It was a pleasure to read and review Before I Die which I recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley, Inkubator Books and Jackie Morrissey for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Before I Die, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Maureen is fed up of Dolores constantly knocking on her door. After her daughter forced the caregiver on her after a fall, Maureen was hoping to finally be rid of her……there’s just something not right with Dolores. But she can’t get away from her as she attends the Active Retired club along with Frank, who she also cares for.

When Frank turns up at her house late one evening and reveals his suspicions to Maureen, she can’t help but believe what Frank is telling her. But then Frank dies and there’s an easy person to blame – and it’s not Dolores. Maureen sets out to try to uncover what happened to Frank and to make sure the responsible person gets what they deserve. But is Maureen putting herself in danger? Her family won’t believe her and think she’s going senile; and then things start getting worse. With an unlikely partner, will Maureen be able to uncover the truth without becoming the next victim?

This was a brilliant story that sadly could ring true to life. Focussed on the older population and a care giver who isn’t what they seem, it did remind me of real life crimes that have taken place. The thought of actually growing old and experiencing the things Maureen and the other older people go through is terrifying. For your family to believe you’re senile and not believe what you’re saying when you know you’re right must be horrible.

In terms of the characters, I loved Maureen and her resilience and drive to prove everyone wrong. But I also hated what was happening to her. Michael turned out to be a character that, despite his flaws, really does have a good side; and should teach us all to not judge a book by its cover. Alva, Maureen’s daughter, infuriated me. She didn’t listen to her Mum at all and just dismissed her feelings and anxieties. And although I thought Ross was a good guy, I felt kind of let down by him in the end. And Dolores – well I won’t say anything about her and will let you make up your own minds!!

The thing that really hit home with this book was the reality. In no way did I feel that it was just a story, and it’s creepy and concerning that these things do happen. Maybe not usually to this extent, but the abuse of power that some people reign over others. It really got me thinking about growing old, and having your independence taken away from you when you want to grab hold of it for as long as possible. And the fact that these older people are given medication to help them, but actually it just zones them out and doesn’t allow them to live the life they want. These are all things that do happen in our society sadly.

Overall this was an enjoyable, thought provoking novel. Morrissey did a brilliant job of building the tension up right until the last minute and I was literally on the edge of my seat and concerned about the outcome. The twists and turns in it weren’t big bangs, but subtle hints that made it more sinister. If you’re looking for your next easy to read, could be real life, psychological thriller that will get your thinking and stay with you once you’ve finished it, then this could be for you! Recommended by me,

What a really good book I enjoyed this read in a day. The story is centred around Maureen who has a bad feeling about Dolores, she's a carer who appears to be a bit of a busy body, but Maureen senses that there is something more with this lady. Michael is the son of Frank who is Maureen's friend so when he dies in suspicious circumstances both of them feel Dolores has something to do with it. But Michael's a hereon addict and Dolores is content on making the world believe Maureen has dementia they aren't a pair people are quick to believe.

What i love about this book is the fact we are presented with an elderly lady as our main character. She has all the problems that come with aging but she is still a strong character. I absolutely loved Maureen and honestly think she's a bad ass granny. The storyline surrounding her is so believable aswell which is the scary part of this book.
Michael's character might be a harder one to like, but as the story progresses i really enjoyed his entries in the book. Again like Maureen the easy way these characters fears are dismissed are so believable. I found both characters very relatable and realistic.

The storyline progresses well, it makes it easy to have doubt in your head aswell. The psychological element of the story is so subtle but written so well. Suspense is built up right until the concluding chapters . It keeps you at the edge of your seat.

I whole heartedly recommend this book. Its a great psychological story with elements of thriller entwined. It's so a really easy read got through it in an evening. With likeable characters and a realistic plot which makes your mind think hoe often does this happen in real life, an easy 4 stars almost 5 but the lack of thriller for me is why its 4.

Before I Die by Jackie Morrissey is not your typical thriller. The victims in this horror story are senior citizens - being taken out by their “carer” Delores. This demon is the last thing they see before dying. Nobody can believe this innocent kind-hearted woman could be guilty of a crime, and that’s where Maureen, another senior citizen comes in. Having previously been cared for by Delores, she is faced with her worst nightmare when her daughter Alva hires her back. Maureen is convinced Delores is out to get her, and drugging her to make her look senile. She then forms an unlikely alliance with Michael, the drug addicted son of the first victim Frank, and the two are determined to prove who Delores really is.

Let me start of by saying this book had me staying up past my bedtime to finish it last night. When I saw I was 90% through, I knew I had to keep going until I reached the end. It started off a tad slow, but it picked up quickly and I was hooked!

Maureen and Michael are two polar opposite characters, and the narrative switches between their POV. I know this is becoming a common trend in thrillers, but I thought it was well executed and added to the story. Maureen’s chapters had me seething, as Alva refused to believe Delores could be causing her mother any harm. There were multiple times I wish I could of shaken Alva to smack some sense into her. Then you have Michael’s chapters, which are heartbreaking as you see him struggle with his heroin addiction and attempts to sober up.

While they are a very unlikely duo, I enjoyed the friendship Maureen and Michael develop. There is a legitimate laugh out loud scene near the end that will warm your heart. Had these two not worked together, Delores would of continued her reign of terror.

While I enjoyed the book overall, the dialogue could of used some work. It felt clunky and the characters seemed to ramble on. There were times it lacked the flow of a natural conversation. Otherwise, I really didn’t have any complaints.

Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Before I Die is available now for the Kindle!

I don't know what it was about this book or even why but I was completely and utterly taken in from the prologue and sat engrossed until the very last page!

Was not predictable.. yes! Was it slightly cliched.. yes! Was it overly dramatized.. yes. Was it one hell of a read.. YES!

Full of tension that flows from beginning to end without any lulls which is a rarity. A rollercoaster ride of a read.

A totally creepy page turner with brilliantly well executed characters all with a back story that's relevant and helps built the suspense. Maureen grew on me throughout the book as did Michael, it shows that friendships can emerge from despair and from every walk of life!

It does make you think about all the lonely older generation that depend on carers and friendly faces!! Thankfully people like Delores ate very few.

I'll admit it would have been a 5* if it wasn't for the ending, I was so hoping that the author would throw a curveball but it was overly predictable (as expected) and that was a slight disappointment BUT everything was all neatly tied up with a big bow at the end.

Huge thanks to netgalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC.

The synopsis does a fabulous job of setting the scene for this book and it indicates that not all is as it should be. Maureen is a character I immediately liked, the is all there with no loose marbles. She is independent but does seem to be avoiding Delores who seems bossy, a bit of a bully and, according to most people, never stops talking.

Now I found that the main premise for the story was one that intrigued me, it has a relevance to events in the news as elderly and vulnerable people are taken advantage of. I found the way the author tackled the subject of getting older and therefore becoming forgetful to be very relevant and it played to the stereotype of the older members of society no coping and in need of more support.

Delores was a well drawn out character, she is sneaky and devious and knows how to push the right buttons. Unfortunately she doesn’t take into account Maureen’s tenacity, and that is fortunate for Maureen. WHile Maureen knows what is going on, her daughter doesn’t and she believes what the wonderful carer Delores tells her. Setting seeds of doubt and then following them up as they develop.

The story takes some surprising turns, and I soon discovered how well the author had this story plotted out. Events from earlier in the book suddenly become obvious later on as things start to draw to their conclusion. There are sneaky and deceitful characters, as well as those that mean well. But when certain things connect then watch out!

I really enjoyed this story, the characters were well developed and they played their parts wonderfully. The sad thing about this book is that even though it is fiction, this manipulation and praying on the vulnerable does happen in real life. I think this is why this book worked so well for me. Before I Die was a slower thriller, but full of suspense and I would definitely recommend it.

This was a really dark domestic thriller. I was so grabbed by the story line from the beginning of the book. The book delved deep into the aging loved ones. And decisions to be made on behalf of someone who we have loved immensely. What is required, what care givers want to do as opposed to what they force themselves to do out of obligation.
Throughout this intricately woven story the characters were Top notch! I felt Like I knew each one. Felt strong empathy for others and got flat out mad at the snarky ones!!
Real life situations and very uncomfortable topics just rocked this book!

We begin with our main character – Maureen – an elderly lady that found herself recovering from an ankle injury. In a bid to help her during that time, her well-meaning but totally misguided daughter, asked a carer to drop in to assist Maureen. Afterall, Delores was the live-in carer for a friend of Maureen’s so what could possibly go wrong? Different events unfold that throw suspicion on both sides…is Maureen starting to get confused and mixing things up? Or is Delores not quite what she seems? And how on earth would you go about proving it when everything seems so reasonable?

This story isn’t overly elaborate but my, it packs a punch. There aren’t the usual overt, outlandish actions and plot twists that you’d expect from a book like this. Instead, it’s made up of clever, subtle events that could be completely believable in real life. That is where the beauty lies. I’m still reeling from the ease and realness of the events. It’s this very realness that makes this tale so dark and utterly twisted.

With this in mind I loved the plot! Despite the small twists and little changes, it still managed to move quickly. Morrissey built the intensity throughout until I was so on edge by the time we came to the last ‘scene’ I felt like I was barely breathing as it all unfolded. The way it all came together was well thought out too. We weren’t given all the answers straight away or in a linear way which kept up the mystery. There was also no knowing how much the other characters knew, apart from Maureen, or when they might show up which again, just heightened the unknown and the questions. At one point Maureen’s inner monologue said “She assembled what she knew for Michael” which was pretty much how I felt around that time and throughout the rest of the book, trying to rearrange my thoughts and the events until things started clicking in to place. Lastly, Morrissey’s choice of demographic was very smart because the more Maureen protested, the more it cast doubt and fuelled the senile theories. Very catch 22!

This was a fast, easy to read book, that delivered in its ability to create suspense and characters that you wanted to get behind. I really enjoyed reading it – well as much as you can enjoy reading something that unsettles you so much!

Riveting!

It was an excellent psychological thriller! I did feel it could have moved along a little faster. The idea that someone who is supposed to be caring for you is trying to kill you is a horrifying thought. I'm 71 years old and this could be a very real possibility. I hope I'm not getting paranoid! LOL

Okay, first of all, REAL TALK: I wanted to abandon this ship right from the prologue. The old lady's distress, the abuse, the despair, it's a lot to take in. I felt like I was in that room, just a pair of eyes that couldn't do anything, except watch the horror that is about to unfold. I wasn't even at the beginning and I WAS THAT FREAKED!
