In this standalone paranormal romance/mystery/thriller C.N. Lesley (the pen name of A&A Flash Editor Elizabeth Hull) chronicles the life of Lily, woman who’d been in the Witness Protection Program – and it failed her. People she loves are dead because of it, and she’s on the run. A car crash in the middle of nowhere injures her severely, and she wakes to find herself in a cabin with no electricity, no cell service (no way to charge it anyhow), and a strange but alluring man named Rowan, caring for her.

He does his best to heal her, but his best involves a paranormal technique that changes her life. And it seems he knows of the criminal that is after her, who is also not what he seems but is, rather, a paranormal foe. Rowan has a score to settle with this guy. Oh, and Rowan is a werewolf – not like in the tales of creatures made mad by the moon, but someone who can shift in and out of being in human or wolf form. And their common enemy is an ancient, cunning vampire.

Lily has no choice, at first, except to join Rowan against their common foe. She’s also not given a choice about becoming a werewolf herself… and she is NOT happy about this. Nevertheless, seeking allies, they go to Rowan’s kin, who are a country and a continent away. Their foe and his henchmen pursue them, but when they get to the Wolven Enclave? Ah – that’s when things get really interesting. And complicated as hell.

You won’t be able to put it down. RECOMMENDED

Lily and Rowan have interesting chemistry from the moment they meet. Loved the beginning of the story and how he takes care of her, helping a stranger in a time of need. But is his motivation selfish or simply because he's good?

Interesting and unique spin on paranormal romance. Quite a bit of angst and some moments where I wanted to yell at my Kindle. If you're looking for something different, you might like this author's take on shifters and their lore.

If it's a novel filled with mystery, romance and a taste of the paranormal you are looking for, SHIFT could be the book for you. Shapeshifters, vampires and werewolves obfuscate this fast-paced, intriguing plot as one makes the journey through the pages. SHIFT is a fun read. I love stories where the protagonists, in this case Lily and Rowan, actively support a common cause and by story's end are somehow transformed by the adventure. For me, the transformation of characters always makes the story a little richer. And that kiss? Well, you'll just have to read to find out about that.

With her guards from the Witness Protection Program dead, Lily has no choice but to get off the grid and hide. When she is injured in a car accident out in the middle of nowhere, she is helped by the mysterious Rowan who clearly resents this intrusion in his life. As he nurses her back to health, Lily begins to notice something odd about his behavior though it does nothing to stop the gradual attraction that is building between them. But all that takes a back stage to the creature that is still hunting her.

A strong and enjoyable paranormal mystery, it hit the ground running and never let up. The characters are well developed and the plot has some terrific twists and turns. (SPOILER ALERT) However, I couldn't quite buy into Rowan's marriage proposal as it seemed to come out of left field. The ten year gap could have been another book on it's own and one that I'd be interested in reading.

All-in-all a smart fun book.

This was an easy to read mix of romance and fantasy. I loved the main characters but their romance is far from straightforward! Lily is escaping danger when rescued from a burning car by Rowan. An exciting start but surprises are in store for Lily and we soon have an adventure featuring werewolves and vampires. The suspense builds and the romance has a very bumpy road to an ultimately happy ending. Well written and great fun!

A fantastic standalone story, this is CN Lesley's first foray into a fantasy in a modern setting, and it works brilliantly. A complex tale of love, loss and revenge, it begins with a car chase across the Canadian border and ends in NYC. Oh, and there are vampires and werewolves too. A great read.

This is an intriguing and entertaining read about Lily, who is on the run for her life from the mafia, only to discover that not only are werewolves real, but also vampires.
Trapped and injured, Lily must make the decision to die in the limited shack in the middle of nowhere in the freezing snow or live and depend on her savior name, Rowan. Not everything is as it seems. One kiss has Lily craving for more than another kiss in this life-or-death tale.
I enjoyed the characters, world-building and storyline. A page-turner to keep you reading. Recommended.

I really enjoyed Lily and Rowan's stories. Both were strong characters and had issues, danger, and conlict in their respective lives that they had to deal with. There was not even a second where the action let up, and although the genre was fantasy, everything that happened was very realistic and believable. Great characters and a strong plot really held my attention and made the book very enjoyable to read. The book had a great sense of place - I felt like I was right there with them. I'll definitely be looking for more books by this author.

A romance with a twist

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy whose handsome protagonist is a werewolf named Rowan and mortal enemy is a vengeful vampire. The innocent Lily becomes a danger to the vampire’s empire and must be eliminated. In fleeing for her life, she comes under the protection of Rowan. From there the pace is fast and keeps the pages turning to the satisfying ending.

Werewolf vs Vampire (or vice versa) is a common plot in paranormal tales. This one has quite a few interesting twists and turns. The MFC, Lily is saved from car crash by a stranger, Rowan. That sets everything into motion including the Romance.
Sleep be damned! I kept reading from page one until the very end!

This book is enjoyably different. The author has taken the well-known werewolves and vampires hate each other legend and given it her own unique twist. From the very start the characters two main characters are intriguing and they certainly grow on you. Then just as you think you know where the story is heading, it goes off in an unexpected and interesting direction. This book is very different to others I have read by this author, but is just as good. The only thing I didn’t like about it is it is not obvious if there will be a follow-on. I really hope there is.

C.N. Lesley is well-known for her deft and imaginative work on altering fantasy tropes to make each story fresh and uniquely her own. She also excels at bonding readers to her characters, who will either become warriors or wield power in pursuit of a cause that’s increasingly complex, forcing love to clash with loss.
