This is a very underrated book. The nearest book I can compare it with is Angela's Ashes. "Slummy" is far better than Angela's Ashes and if you liked the latter, you will love "Slummy". In particular I empathise with it because I come from the Liverpool area originally.
The "chip chop women" (suppliers of firewood kindling used to light the coal fires of those days) reminded me of my grandparents who, indeed, used to buy the bundles of chips and always had some stacked near their old-fashioned coal fire and hob.
This would make a better film than "Ashes" and I am surprised nobody has done so.
