Oh my godddd... I can’t even with this book. I was so excited to see this in my “recommended for you” section on Amazon. Being the incest-romance book lover than I am, I downloaded and started reading this right away.
I liked the idea of the brother/sister love, but the writing was so bad right off the bat. Let me give you some examples: ▪️Dialogue on page 4: “What are you doing, Max? The bell almost rings.” ▪️Other days we went to the movies, hanged out with some of his friends; “I hanged out with Lucy.” Sometimes the three of us hanged out together. ▪️ we are bad persons.
This wasn’t even close to the amount of shit like this...
Then there was the fact that we had to get descriptions of what every single character was wearing every goddamn time. Aaron and Maxine making out and groping each other? I was wearing a pink velveteen skirt, a beige sweater and brown boots. I was straddling him on the couch, he took off my sweater and I was in my nude bra and my skirt pulled up. I had unbuttoned his salmon shirt... Then the next page they’re at lunch and she’s wearing something different, so is Aaron, so we had to have paragraphs of the description of their clothing. Ugh, kill me now.
Besides the writing, the plot just wasn’t for me. Maxine and Julian are brother and sister but there is so much OW and OM drama that I just couldn’t take it. Maxine is dating Aaron and we get scenes of them messing around with each other... then Julian comes home and she ends up fucking him. Then she promised Julian she wouldn’t have sex with Aaron but she does and lies about it. Julian texts other girls and has always slept around even previous to Maxine dating anyone else. We got to see Julian kiss some other girl and say he’d fuck her because he was mad that he found out Max was having sex with Aaron and she lied about it, buuuut she expected Julian to not sleep around himself while he waited for her to graduate and move in with him. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🙄🙄
Then Julian ignores her for weeks but magically the end he shows up to get her from the airport when she’s coming to live with him, and he says “This is finally happening, my love.”
Oh yeah, and there’s a book 2. You can bet your ass I’m staying away from that train wreck.
Plus all the drama with their parents and Maxine’s best friend turned ex-best friend... oh my lord. Too much. Just too damn much.
I know some people love the crazy drama but I didn’t enjoy it. I wanted this to be better because I love me some family lovin’ but I was pretty disappointed.
1.5⭐️ only because some of the sex scenes between Maxine and Julian (the bro and sis) were pretty hot.
A very touching and interesting love story. Told from Max's perspective, it was sometimes difficult to follow the flashbacks as they did not sequel well with the main storyline flow. They even crossed Chapter boundaries. Both characters were likeable and I found myself hoping for the best for their relationship. Throw in a few good surprises and you have a good book. Love, true love, should never be judged by others, society or cultural norms but celebrated for what it is: A gift to be treasured. Thanks Alexander and I have already purchased the 2nd book. I look forward to see how the couple develops.
Five stars for the author of this book on difficult subject matter. Despite what the unfortunate title may lead you to believe, this book is not smut. It has no more sex than your typical popular vampire, werewolf, mafia type, motorcycle club genre. The author does present the emotional hurdles and challenges the main characters encounter without so far casting one or the other as an obvious sociopath. I will be looking for the next book.
I found the writing to be stilted at times. I have never read a book that constantly gave such detailed descriptions of what the characters are wearing. It was not necessary. I really did not care for the female mc. Her behavior was contradictory to her stated feelings about the other mc. The contradictions did not make her likable. The ending was also odd and abrupt, as a primary conflict was not resolved.
Julian and Max have always had a close relationship (akin to best friends) as brother and sister. But as they’ve gotten older, they have developed romantic feelings for each other. But it’s not a simple situation since they are brother and sister. Lots of hiding and secrets that must stay behind closed doors.
I REALLY enjoyed this. I was just saying to myself the other day that I would LOVE to read a brother sister incest story where the parents haven’t died tragically or they have been raised in a dysfunctional home. Why are nearly all sibling incest stories setup this way? I wanted to read a story where a brother and sister have simply developed unconventional feelings for each other over the years. And this was that!
Julian and Max are incredibly cute and sweet and sexy together. They are so in love and I adored them together.
But…things are certainly complicated. They go to great lengths to hide their relationship (for good reasons) from their parents and those around them by seeing (and sleeping with) other people. This might put off a lot of people from their story. But for me I feel like their reasonings make sense. This isn’t a simple romance. It’s gonna get messy one way or another. And they are already so outwardly affectionate with each other as siblings. Some people suspect something is going on with them, and they are terrified of being caught.
So I kind of got it. I don’t LOVE that they have relationships and sex with other people. But I GET why they feel like they have to do it to appear normal and uninterested in each other. The only thing I didn’t like was Maxine developing real feelings for Aaron (even though he WAS such a sweetheart and I felt so bad for how she used him). I didn’t like this and I didn’t like that she hid that she was having sex with him from Julian. Throughout the whole book they are completely honest with each other about everything, including who and when they have slept with others (even if they aren’t honest with other people outside the two of them). And so this felt like a deep betrayal which put me off a lot more than random casual sex with others.
But, like I said. This is a complicated relationship and it’s bound to be messy…one way or another.
What I loved about this book though was the truly consuming passion these two have for each other. Some things in this book seem straight out of my own brother/sister dream taboo story fantasies. And for that I enjoyed it a lot.
It’s not a perfect book. Some of the dialog is stilted and unnatural and some of the things they do are really immature (but they are still young so it’s not a surprise there).
Still, it’s good enough that I would definitely read it again when I’m in the mood for this kind of book. And I’m excited to read part two and see what happens! Please don’t be a tragic ending! Please give us a HEA for these two!
