A man overcomes heartache by learning to jog. A whale struggles with an eating disorder. A spaceship's crew must come together to avoid disaster. A teapot breaks, sparking an existential crisis. A girl meets a mysterious talking car. And I had to feed my friend's cat for a week. Modern Sadness collects 32 short stories spanning a multitude of genres - from romance to science-fiction, from western to courtroom drama - all exploring the very human act of coping with disappointment, grief, and sadness.
Bravo to the rookie author on his first published work! I enjoyed the author's willingness to flout our collective desire for happy endings and in so doing perhaps give us a work of fiction that more faithfully mirrors the modern experience. The author's development as a writer is apparent as the book progresses, with the penultimate story - Depresso - the crowning achievement of the collection (in my view). I eagerly await more from O.W.!
