In this clear, practical, and brief commentary, Anthony Thiselton brings to bear his intimate knowledge of Paul's theology, the ancient city of Colossae, and Paul's epistle to the church of that city. The commentary offers a new translation from the Greek, and explorations of an exegetical as well as a pastoral and practical nature on all passages of the book. Each section concludes with questions for further reflection.
Anthony Charles Thiselton is emeritus professor of Christian theology at the University of Nottingham and a fellow of the British Academy. His recent publications include Approaching Philosophy of Religion, Discovering Romans, Systematic Theology, The Holy Spirit, and The Last Things.
Really solid commentary. Original insights. In conversation with other solid commentaries. Thiselton is one of the best. If anything, I would have loved more theological commentary from him.
A great commentary from Thiselton, that matches its subtitle: a short pastoral and exegetical commentary.
Thiselton, unlike some short commentaries I have picked up, does not reduce this letter to a devotional series, where there’s a paragraph of life application and no real examination of the subject at hand. There’s nothing wrong in devotionals, of course. But they shouldn’t be marketed as commentaries. Thiselton’s ‘short’ approach deals directly with the text, in an accessible way, which is what you want. He does enough to help you appreciate Paul’s context, in dialogue with other views and theologians, and nudges you to some good places if you wish to enquire further.
