Big Ideas Simply Explained

The Medicine Book: Big Ideas Simply Explained

Rate this book
How are illnesses diagnosed? When did the first successful organ transplant take place? Why are some pandemics so deadly?

This book explores big questions like these, explaining the breakthroughs and discoveries that have shaped our modern-day understanding of medicine and helped us protect and promote our health. Written in plain English, The Medicine Book cuts through the jargon and is packed with pithy explanations of the most important milestones in medical history, with step-by-step diagrams and witty illustrations that untangle knotty concepts.

From ancient medical practices, such as herbal medications and balancing the humours, through groundbreaking work including Jenner's experiments with cowpox, which laid the basis for vaccination, The Medicine Book offers an engaging overview of medical history across the world all the way into the 21st century with gene manipulation, immunotherapy, and robotics and telesurgery. Covering the role that therapies and drugs have played in the human quest to treat and prevent disease, the establishment of hospitals and later international medical bodies, like the WHO, and medical science's response to new challenges, such as accelerated antibiotic resistance and COVID-19, The Medicine Book explains the stories behind each milestone development.

Continuing the "Big Ideas" series' trademark combination of authoritative, informative text, and bold graphics, The Medicine Book uses an innovative visual approach to make the subject accessible to everyone, whether you're a student of medicine or science, a medical professional, or an armchair expert.

Jam packed with information on the history of medicine, its founders and specialists, research and progress, The Medicine Book is utterly fascinating! The writing style is fun and informative with bits and blurbs, quotations and biographies, photographs and illustrations. I really like the timelines and graphs, too.

Amazingly, there is evidence of trepanning in ancient times, several thousand years ago. You will find topics such as different methods of healing (i.e. shamans, Chinese medicine, Roman surgery), the mechanics of disease, very early reconstructive surgery (India was the most advanced for ages), the Hippocratic oath, Galen's (and many others' contributions), the use of plants to alleviate pain, reason vs. rules, philosophy, ethics, the discovery and role of root causes of illness, experiments with blood transfusions (with animals to animals, animals to humans...), anaesthesia (including laughing gas), addressing individual needs including male and female, the role of vitamins and diet, penicillin...so much interesting information! There is even a section on pandemics including the coronavirus.

My favourite parts were the biographies of the brilliant men and women and their discoveries, research and inventions. To me the ingenuity is largely incomprehensible. Anyone even vaguely fascinated with medicine ought to read this book. You are sure to glean quite a lot of knowledge!

My sincere thank you to DK and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this informative (and fun!) book in exchange for an honest review. Much appreciated.

Odporúčam : každému, kto si chce doplniť, alebo osviežiť poznatky z oblasti vedy a medicíny

Neodporúčam : ak nemáte radi väčšie formáty kníh a veľa písaného textu

Vždy ma udivuje, koľko poznatkov z medicíny a vedy vedeli ľudia už dávno pred touto súčastnou dobou. Sú to poznatky, z ktorých dodnes čerpajú mnohí lekári a vedci.

Kniha Veda a Medicína zrozumiteľne a hlavne bez zbytočných omáčok výstižne opisuje najväčšie objavy fyziky, biológie, matematiky, chémie a medicíny.

Obsahuje ilustrácie, mnoho písaného textu, fotografie a to podané stručným a výstižným štýlom.

Veda a Medicína vás rozhodne majú čím zaujať.

“Truth in medicine is an unattainable goal, and the art as described in books is far beneath the knowledge of an experienced and thoughtful physician.”
– Al-Razi

What I liked about this book:

1- This book taught me so much. It made me realize just how terrifying life must have been before modern medicine. There was a time when people didn’t even understand the heart’s function—can you imagine? What really stood out to me was how bacteria and viruses evolved alongside medical advances. It’s wild to think that we could eventually lose our ability to treat diseases because of antibiotic resistance and superbugs.

2- I love how medical students used laughing gas to have fun and called it "experimenting".

3- It had so many amazing quotes from so many amazing people.

What I didn't like about this book:

1- Some information was repeated a few times, which made parts feel a bit redundant.

"Jedy a lieky sú často tie isté látky podávané s odlišnými zámermi."

4.5*

Ani neviem, čo by som tomuto vytkla, keďže som reálne hltala každú stranu.

Opinions: The above summary says it all: The Medicine Book is packed full of easy-to-read information, making education accessible to anybody interested in biology, no matter your age or background knowledge on the subject. Expanding on this, the narrative is clear and every single page is decorated with timelines and diagrams to depict the reactions and cycles being discussed! Whether you're a grade schooler with a passion for medicine or an adult needing to catch up on the basics, the easy-to-read writing style and timelines have got you covered. Complimenting this, DK Publishing maintained a healthy balance between shop-talk and vibrant images, meaning all readers can maintain their engagement and not be discouraged by a too-mature or too-childish display. However, The Medicine Book is quite dense and, in my opinion, could not be used to spark a passion for medicine in children. Middle or high schoolers may be struck by individual chapters, for example cloning or females in the medical field, but there is too much nitty-gritty "jargon" for those without a passion for medicine to stay connected.

My Favourite Thing: Without giving too much of the content away, I loved the information The Medicine Book taught! You will learn biology, chemistry, ancient practices, history, and even biographies of famous doctors, nurses, and medical professionals. Whether you're writing a research paper or not, this book is perfect for learning exactly what you need to know about the world of medicine.

My Least Favourite Thing: It's worth being prepared for all 336 pages of The Medicine Book because, as I said above, you learn biology and chemistry... but also history, ancient practices, and professionals' biographies. Considering at least 1/3 of this book teaches the history of medicine, at least 1/6 of this book focuses on dates, names, and detailed locations that are irrelevant to learning about medicine itself. This is not a fault of the book, but you should know what you're getting into beforehand so you aren't let down.

Any questions about the book? Thoughts about my review? I'd love to hear what you think! Let me know by commenting :)

My favourite part of the book was when they talked about dreams because when I read that part it brought back memories of my dreams and excitement of the past. What surprised me the most was that some of the words I read was a bit more complicated then I expected so it took me some time to understand most of the words. And lastly if I could change the ending I would prefer not to because if i did the book would be a lot less interesting.

Excellent, up-to-date look at medicine through the ages

I enjoyed this book. The book covers many areas of medicine, including anatomy, pharmacology, surgery, psychiatry, infectious diseases, and immunology. The entries are very well written, with crystal-clear explanations. From a historical perspective, the book has a fairly global view. My favorite parts of the book were the biographical highlights on each topic. The Directory towards the end of the book was also fascinating, containing brief entries on some lesser-known people. Each sub-chapter in the book also contains a Context section to show what happened chronologically before and after the subject of the entry. The timelines were also very useful. The book had an encyclopedic feel to it, with enough information to hold my interest but not too detailed, so I never felt bogged down. I found the art in the book to be excellent. This book could be of interest to people with or without a medical background. Thank you to NetGalley and DK for the advance reader copy.

My journey on reading the Big Ideas Simply Explained series continues, now with The Medicine Book!

I have read some historical books on medicine, but I only know about how the foundations of modern medicine originate from Hippocrates and Galen. The former is especially known for his formulation of the Hippocratic Oath, while the latter is more on the balances of the Four Humors: phlegm, blood, yellow bile, and black bile. But I didn't know much about how medicine was practiced in other ancient worlds, from the Indian to the Chinese and even the Islamic world. I wanted to know more about the origins of medicine, and how they influenced the modern world of medicine we know today.

It is very enlightening to see the different medical discoveries throughout various eras and how medicine has universally evolved. New knowledge ranging from the human anatomy to germ theory, hygiene to germ theory paved the way for modern medicine that we know (and take for granted) today. The key people behind these discoveries, such as John Snow's contribution to epidemiology, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch's discoveries in germ theory, and Florence Nightingale's knowledge in nursing and sanitation, were invaluable and remain relevant even to today's context.

With COVID-19 still fresh on everyone's mind, including mine, medicine remains relevant regardless of the era that we live in. As diseases continue to evolve, so does medicine and the quest to cure them. There are some parts of the book I can't understand since I don't have a medical background, but I appreciate how the medical technologies we have today originally came to be, and that we need to be grateful for what we have today. Let's see which Big Ideas Simply Explained book I will read next!

During a battle in 1537, French army barber-surgeon Ambroise Paré ran out of the boiling oil traditionally used to treat gunshot wounds. (It was believed to purge the body of poisonous gunpowder.) Resorting to a folk remedy of egg yolk, rose oil, and turpentine, he found that the wounds healed more rapidly and with much less pain.

“it is no easy matter to root out old prejudices.” - James Lind

Scottish surgeon John Hunter concluded that the opening of damaged tissue in order to extract bullet fragments (which was common practice at the time) in fact aggravated infections rather than diminished them.

Whereas even targeted X-rays can damage healthy tissues, protons deliver less of a radiation dose to these surrounding tissues while still attacking the tumor.

To divide rapidly, cancer cells depend on folic acid-if deprived of it, they would die.

Antibodies are protein molecules made by B-cells, which are a type of lymphocyte. They bind to molecules (antigens) on the surface of targeted cells, such as bacteria, and signal to the immune system to destroy them.

CAR-T cell therapy: T-cells are taken from a patient's bloodstream, and their receptors are modified so they can recognize a specific protein on cancer cells then the CAR T-cells are put back into the patient's bloodstream.

How Alzheimer’s progresses: As the cortex becomes thinner, distant memories are also lost. As the brain tissue dies, the body loses its ability to function, leading to death.

Medicine is such a fascinating field, and books like this really help break down complex concepts in an engaging way. I’ve always found that reading is just one part of the learning process—hands-on experience and real discussions make things click even more. When I was exploring different medical topics, I had the chance to attend the https://www.immerse.education/medicin... and it was an incredible way to dive deeper into the subject. Combining theory with practical insights made a huge difference in how I understood medical concepts, especially when applying them to real-world scenarios.

Absolutely loved reading this book!
I am a huge bio-nerd, starting back a decade ago.
This was a fun refresher and informer of previous learned medical knowledge! Topping up on some missing knowledge gaps, while exploring the history of medicine <3

It's a great book for novices and amateur human anatomy and physiologists. Though some knowledge of the basics of human biology is recommended to better appreciate some stuff talked about, but not necessary.

Great entry in the BISE series!
I've read a bunch of these books, and I'd say this is an S tier for me, but would say an A tier for the general populace. :P

Soon enough polysacharrides will no longer be your placebo sugar pill. And it's good to remember all the turns we took to get there. Such a simple concept staring us in the face: glycation and substrates. But like most things in life, sometimes you have to take the long path to solidify an idea.

I enjoyed the pictures that paired the brief content that clearly described medicine throughout history (from the Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Western Medicine and updates about the coronavirus). This book is something worth having on your desk if you are an aspiring healthcare professional, someone interested in medical history, or history in general! Great graphics and well-phrased content that is easy to digest!
