Story Reviewed: Saint, by Colleen Hoover

Me while reading chapter 1: OMG I love Nathaniel Saint. I WANT, I WANT, I WANT.
Me while reading chapter 3: Why is Saint so perfect and beautiful and hot and yummy???? 😭
Me while reading chapter 6: Uh... I'm sorry, WHAT IS HAPPENING???? Saint, WHYYY?
Me while reading chapter 9: Saint (can I even call you that?!), you better STAY THE F*** AWAY FROM ME, OH MY GOD YOU CRAZY SOB! 😱😵

Yeah, that's exactly how I reacted, because HOLY. FREAKING. COW! Colleen, you beautifully terrifying creature, you've scared and scarred me FOR LIFE! Oh my Lord, this story. I'm quite literally speechless. It's so, so stunningly woven that it deserves all the applauses. The level of mystery and intrigue are simply outstanding. The emotions depicted in each chapter are mind-blowing; the chemistry factor is off the charts. Only Colleen Hoover can give you a full-lenght novel experience in a short story/novella. She's a master of words; a true queen of the fiction world 👏

Story Title: A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters
Author: Emma Scott
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Type: Short story from One More Step Anthology
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Faith Benson made a trip to Hawaii to escape the fast life of city living. What supposed to be a self-discovery moment turned into a disaster of dramatic proportion. And the disaster led her to Asher Mackey which could cause a different kind of disaster to her heart.

This was such a cute and fun short story. Both characters were likable and had good chemistry. I enjoyed the storyline even though personally I felt the ending had too much rainbow with glitter sprinkles lol!

A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters is a story of discovering unexpected connections. It is part of the One More Step, a charity anthology by The Bookworm Box.

Review: The Deal

I enjoyed this quick novella. A touch of mystery, suspense, and hotness!
Just like any short story, it feels like I am just getting into the story when it's over.
I need more of Rett and Emma, Aleatha!

Note: I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and gave my honest opinion.

I'm giving this an overall rating of 4 Stars. Yes, there were stories that I ended up skipping since they really weren't my cup of tea and there were others that I majorly got into but then found myself disappointed that it ended too soon.

Story reviewed: A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters by Emma Scott

Faith Benson has been living a fast life and enjoying being taken care of by men. Though she had a good situation with a long-time friend, Faith is ready to reclaim her own independence and find inner peace by taking a solo vacation to Hawaii. But while there, all changes when she meets Asher Mackey.

“No man had looked at me the way Asher Mackey looked at me, with fire in his eyes but something deeper too. And I wanted to live in that reflection. Bask in it.”

Overall, this short story is about two people who find love when they least expect it. The pace is quick and the plot full of romantic gestures. I like how Faith comes to certain realizations, but I did want more development given the length. As for Asher, he sounds like a girl’s wet dream.

A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters is a sweet romance about giving in to one’s heart.

The Deal- Aleatha Romig

A quick dark novella with an intriguing mysterious steamy Deal. That Deal is not known but all the hints leading up to it is full of twists and turns in true Aleatha Romig style. Who, What, Where and Why.......This story promises to so much and I can’t wait to read more about Rett and Emma.

”......one more step would mean certain death.”

Looking forward to reading more stories in the One Step collection.

Here we go...

A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters - Emma Scott 2.5✯
HIKING / MOUNTAINEERING | ROMANCE
A bit too sappy for my taste. Faith is a strange character for Asher to fall for, considering everything we know about him. As a self-professed gold digger, Faith wears sandals on a dangerous hike and hurts herself so that she has to be rescued and airlifted out. Meanwhile, Asher is this down-to-earth guy who lives a simple and beautiful life and falls head-over-heels for this nonsense. Nah. I am not buying it.

Something Like Kismet - Ginger Scott 4✯
FRIENDSHIP | ROMANCE | YOUNG ADULT
Kismet or carpe diem, this was so sweet. The perfect length for this 'take control of your life and live it' story.

Love at First Fight - K.L. Grayson 3.5✯
ROMANCE
If a stranger gets into your car, you shouldn't check out what he's wearing and smell him; you should get out of the vehicle before you're carjacked. Moving past this, Mason and Jules admittedly do have good chemistry. It's a little too close to instalove for my taste, but still a good story.

First Flight - Jessica Sorensen 3.5✯
ANGELS | FRIENDSHIP | HIGH FANTASY | ROMANCE
This just makes me mad because I want more - what kind of college do death angels attend? What do they study? The romance was the least interesting part of this; I just want to know more about this world.

Something Wonderful - LK Farlow 1✯
EROTIC ROMANCE | NEW ADULT FICTION
Someone who ends your friendship without a discussion so he can get laid and then pretends not to know you and treats you like a potential hookup in an extremely creepy way years later does not deserve a second chance. I don't care how much you miss him/used to have a crush on him. Especially since, as this newly reformed relationship develops, it's clearly only based on looks. As Dane said, Thea was flat as a board when he stopped being her friend, but since she's curvy and hot now, he's more than happy to date her and be in her life again. Everything felt shallow and pretty pathetic.

Opening Up - T.K. Rapp 3✯
FRIENDSHIP | INFIDELITY | ROMANCE
This story ended just when I started getting interested. I know these are short stories, but this one was too short to develop the characters and the events, and everything happened too quickly to be realistic.

The Ex-Dynamic - S.M. Soto 2✯
EROTIC ROMANCE | HOCKEY | INFIDELITY | SIBLINGS
Such a dumb 'twist' - it ruined the entire story. I can see something like that lasting for weeks or months, not years. Especially with family, and especially if they're actually this in love.

Bound - Cathlin Shahriary 3.5✯
FAERIES | HIGH FANTASY
I think this is a short story from an already-existing series/universe, so I did feel a little out of the loop. While it made me want to read the existing book(s), it also included a lot of spoilers, so I'm a little on the fence here.

Saving Ava Grace - Julie Solano & Tracy Justice 1✯
ABUSE | DYSTOPIAN | ROMANCE
Stockholm syndrome to the extreme. Keep the pretty girl on the island, surrounded by criminals, and make yourself her only hope of protection and escape. Then, under the threat of death, pull her away from her family and the only world she's ever known to take her into your life where you are the only thing standing between her and imprisonment or even execution. She has no free will in this situation - what if Ava Grace decides she doesn't want to be with Noah at some point in the future? Will she be free to live her own life apart from him, or will he hold the threat of exposure to trap her? I saw nothing but red flags and did not feel comfortable with anything in this story.

The Story - Evan Grace 3✯
INFIDELITY | ROMANCE
So a blind date goes well. That's your amazing story? Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened here, but it's treated like an incredible love story. I feel like I'm missing something important…

Hail Mary - JB Salsbury 3.5✯
EROTIC ROMANCE | FOOTBALL
More the first few chapters of a book rather than a short story, it feels unfinished. A teaser for another book is not really what you expect while reading an anthology, so while this is a good start to another book, it doesn't fit in this collection.

Whatever It Takes - Gianna Gabriela 3✯
ROMANCE
Enemies to lovers but with not enough context to make it interesting. We learn a lot about Ari and Kayden's feelings towards each other but nothing about why or what will happen. Finished off with the weirdest cliffhanger ending that doesn't explain anything.

Magical Show Down - K.F. Breene 2.5✯
CRIME FICTION | DEMONS | FAERIES | LOW FANTASY | SHAPESHIFTERS | VAMPIRES
Way too short to achieve anything. It must be a short story from an already existing world - otherwise, half of it doesn't make sense and serves no purpose without context. It's not even enough of a window into the world to want to look into it and read more.

Rendezvous Dot Com - Lilly Wilde 1✯
INFIDELITY
Immediately off to a bad start; blaming another woman for her husband cheating with you is so anti-women it's unbelievable. Someone not sharing about their husband on Instagram is not a good enough reason to be involved in an affair. People are aware divorce exists, right? Also, the number of times people were described by their ethnicity in this very short story was incredibly uncomfortable and unnecessary. I have absolutely no interest in 'continuing Nia's story' - this was more than enough.

Interception - Santana Blair 4✯
FOOTBALL | ROMANCE
A huge relief after the last few stories; this was the perfect length, and no outside context was needed. Entirely predictable but still sweet and fun to read; I definitely enjoyed this one.

The Bribe - Devney Perry 4✯
ANIMALS | FRIENDSHIP | HIKING / MOUNTAINEERING | MYSTERY | ROMANCE
This is the first short story related to another story I'd be interested in reading more. A little bit of mystery with a meet-cute and maybe a bribe? I might look into finding this book and finishing the story…

Leap of Faith - Jaci Wheeler 4.5✯
GHOSTS | MEDICAL FICTION | MENTAL ILLNESS
So different from all the other stories, it has quickly become my favourite. It ends a little saccharine, but the rest of the story deserves it. Elliot's complete hopelessness and Leo's need to save him are so compelling that the rest easily falls into place. It's a nice change from everything that came before, especially because it's actually a short story that doesn't need any more than what is included here.

Spy’s Heart - M. Lynn 3.5✯
HIGH FANTASY | ROMANCE | SPY THRILLER
Even though this ties into a series, it works as a standalone; you get enough information for everything to make sense while still being aware that a lot is lurking beneath the surface. I enjoyed this story, but nothing particularly made me want to look into the series. Regardless, the story is fast-paced, with interesting characters and magic, with some twists that make it feel more complex.

8°F - Debra Anastasia 2.5✯
THRILLER
I was enjoying this until Paul referred to Eight's breasts as fun bags entirely seriously in an intensely dangerous moment. Seriously? Another first chapter of a book that I wouldn't be interested in reading. Any guy who can't stop thinking about getting laid while being shot at and running for his life is not a guy I want to read more about. Eight and Deal were interesting, and I could've read more about them, though.

Kess - Tijan 3✯
EROTIC ROMANCE | MOTORCYCLES | YOUNG ADULT
Two hot people with uncles in the same gang finally get to hook up after being around each other for a year. Apparently, it's love. Pretty average and not worth looking into further.

Set Fire to the Sky - A.L. Jackson 2✯
ABUSE | EROTIC ROMANCE | THRILLER
First instalove I've read that happened while someone was unconscious. Overly dramatic and oversimplified, this is like a saviour complex firefighter daydream. It wraps up way too quickly and easily, especially considering the premise.

Kick Off - Amy Daws 2.5✯
FAMILY | ROMANCE | SOCCER
I liked the love story but hated the rest of it. Vaughn didn't deserve Vilma and to treat their children this way because he was grieving is terrible. I don't want to read more about how he moves on with his life without the person who deserved to live much more than he did.

Call Me Heather - BB Easton 1✯
EROTIC ROMANCE | INFIDELITY | MENTAL ILLNESS
Yeah, this isn't good. A therapist thinks his patient is a psychopath faking mental illness but keeps seeing her because she's hot and his wife isn't sleeping with him. She tries to seduce him, and he lets her go too far without actively engaging, then ends the session and won't see her anymore. So she creates a scene, threatening to commit suicide publicly unless she can speak to her therapist. He knows she's lying but shows up anyway. She reveals his wife's affair and admits she'd feel guilty unless he knew. He realises her feeling guilt means she's not a psychopath, and so, of course, that means he can sleep with her because she's 'just' a stalker. Like seriously, what the fuck did I just read, and can I give it zero stars?

The Deal - Aleatha Romig 1✯
EROTIC ROMANCE | FAMILY
Yeah, I don't care how hot someone is; if they show up out of nowhere, know too much about you, and start ordering you around, that's not attractive. This is a very strange story that's more off-putting than interesting.

Saint - Colleen Hoover 2✯
BOOKS ABOUT BOOKS | EROTIC ROMANCE | INFIDELITY | THRILLER
Okay, that was creepy. The last few stories in this anthology are majorly twisted (and as someone who loves a dark narrative, it's not in a good way), and this does not leave it on a high note.

Total 2✯
Did anyone edit this book? There are a lot of spelling and grammatical errors. I did a lot of rereading sentences to figure out what they were supposed to say. Many of these short stories feel like rough first drafts, and most of the others are excerpts from existing stories that either make you want to read those books (rare) or make you glad you don't have to read more. There are a few standouts, but overall I wasn't impressed with this anthology. I read One More Step as part of my CoHo readathon, but all it's convinced me to do is to skip Two More Days .

❐ Anthology
❐ Bookworm Box
❐ All done for charity
❐ 26 Short Stories...All starting with the same first-line...
❐ Listening Length ➯ 658 Pages
❐ I read/purchased on Kindle

By far the two best stories are by authors that I already love...Emma Scott and Colleen Hoover. Honorable mentions go out to K.L. Grayson and Debra Anastasia who are both new-to-me authors.

THE STORIES✎

A MEET CUTE AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS BY EMMA SCOTT➯ 4½ STARS. This is a super sweet, super short little romantic story that takes place in Hawaii...for the most part, anyway. Since I love everything this woman writes...I knew I would like this too.

SOMETHING LIKE KISMET BY GINGER SCOTT➯ 1 STAR. I feel terrible giving something only one star when it was done for charity...but this was just plain awful. These characters were supposed to be seniors in high school and they acted like twelve-year-olds.

LOVE AT FIRST FIGHT BY K.L. GRAYSON➯ 4 STARS. When you only have so many words to put into a story, especially a newly-found-romance story...and you don't want insta-love...than this is the perfect way to do it...with a just a lead-up to love.

FIRST FLIGHT BY JESSICA SORENSEN➯ 3½ Stars. This was a cute little story about overcoming fears...with Angels.

SOMETHING WONDERFUL BY L.K. FARLOW➯ 3 Stars. A little juvenile...surfer boy and his long lost best friend who has been pining for him...friends to lovers trope. Well written with a smexy sex scene.

OPENING UP BY T.K. RAPP➯ 3¾ Stars. It was going along smoothly and then it just ended abruptly, right when it was getting good...or could've been good.

THE EX-DYNAMIC BY S.M. SOTO➯ 1 Star. This was so pathetic...we're supposed to believe this scenario...it also really needed some editing and proofreading.

BOUND BY CATHLIN SHAHRIARY➯ 3¼ Stars. This is a novella that falls somewhere within a series (Fae Realm) by this Author. So it was decent but I had no idea about any of the backstory that is hinted at.

SAVING AVA GRACE BY JULIE SOLANO & TRACY JUSTICE➯ 3¼ Stars. Despite having some huge plot holes, I found the premise to have promise...they just need to decide if it's a dystopian world or a more current world...

THE STORY BY EVAN GRACE➯ 2 Stars. It wasn't badly written so I gave it extra star...but seriously it was so freaking boring...just a tale of a first date where absolutely nothing exciting happens...I think they have sex...but I'm not sure because I skimmed.

HAIL MARY BY J.B. SALSBURY➯ 2 Stars. This was cheesy, eye-roll-inducing, and cliched AF.

WHATEVER IT TAKES BY GIANNA GABRIELA➯ 3 Stars. This was okay-ish...had some plot holes/conflicting elements...which seems to be a recurring theme for these too-short stories.

MAGICAL SHOWDOWN BY KF. BREENE➯ ½ Star--Skipped. This wasn't for me...the writing was sub-par. This is an exert from this:

The guy in his late forties, wearing a tight leather body suit around a loose body, turned slowly, standing in front of a man-sized hole in a crumbling stone wall from yesteryear, the structure's other walls barely standing and the roof long since rotted away.
This was all one sentence, talk about run-on sentence...and what the hell is up with a tight leather bodysuit around a loose body?

RENDEVOUS DOT COM BY LILLY WILDE➯ 1 Star --Skipped. Straight-up porn. Once I saw the line that said "And how much I want to come in all of your holes." It was totally spelled that way too...if you're going to use the slang term for semen, then you should at least spell it correctly. Well, anyway, on to the next one.

INTERCEPTION BY SANTANA BLAIR➯ 3 Stars. Another Okay-ish short lead-up to romance. This one has the "I'll help you land that guy you want...when really I want you for myself" trope.

THE BRIDE BY DEVNEY PERRY➯ 2½ Stars. Why is this called The Bride...there is literally no bride in this story...and at the end of the story, it says that you can continue the story in The Bribe by Devney Perry (& Willa Nash). I'm thinking this is a typo, but seriously that is a really huge typo...how do you mess up the title? Anyway, this is just the beginning of a full novel-sized story and leaves you maybe wanting more...I know I’m not wanting more, though.

LEAP OF FAITH BY JACI WHEELER➯ No Rating. Not the story for me right now...someone trying to kill themselves...just isn't what I need.

SPY'S HEART BY M. LYNN➯ 2 Stars. I stopped at Chapter 4...I've been on this story for weeks and haven't felt the need to read it...except maybe to get over with...so I got it over with right quick.

8°F BY DEBRA ANASTASIA➯ 4 Stars. I wanted more of this story, even though it was kind of over the top...it was still kind of fun.

KESS BY TIJAN➯ DNF. Ugh...this one was really juvenile. I couldn't get past chapter 3.

SET FIRE TO THE SKY BY A.L. JACKSON➯ DNF. At this point, I’ve been trying to read these stories for months now and they are not cutting it...so if it doesn’t catch my interest right away I’m skipping over it.

KICK OFF BY AMY DAWS➯ DNF.

CALL ME HEATHER BY B.B. EASTON➯ DNF.

THE DEAL BY ALEATHA ROMIG➯ 3¾ Stars. The writing was better than most of the stories in this anthology and I really enjoyed The Light Series by this author but so far I haven’t felt intrigued enough by any of her other stuff to give them a try, and this story was only okay for me.

SAINT BY COLLEEN HOOVER➯ 4½ Stars. A clever little romantic suspense short story.

I read The Deal by Aleatha Romig.

Can you fall in love with a book/novella because of food and wine porn? Because I think I just did. I need red wine and barbecued shrimp more than I need to take my next breath. Get me to New Orleans right the hell now (well maybe after this global pandemic is over unless Rett Ramses can send me a private jet where I can socially distance).

There’s so much intrigue packed into a short preview. I want to know more about Jezebel and Isiah. Knowing more about the devilish Rett is a given. Who is that man and will he buy me a hurricane and some shrimp.

Ready when you are Aleatha. Help me escape to Nola, in a safe way; i.e by book.

Reviewing Emma Scott’s story— A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters

I had no idea this was Faith’s story!!!! Gahhhhh. We meet this beauty in Emma Scott’s book Someday, Someday and I daresay she was an absolute fan favorite, I loved her character so much. Gorgeous, outspoken, “no filter Faith” decides to take a trip to Hawaii to find some inner peace. However, instead she finds Asher Mackey, who has relocated to Hawaii for a “reset” on his own life. Faith has sworn off men but the attraction between these two is undeniable.

This short story was witty and romantic and had me cheering so hard for Faith who deserves to find love and happiness. Asher is totally swoony (a firefighter!) and these two develop a beautiful relationship during Faith’s three week vacation. A relationship of give and take, which is an entirely new concept for Faith. I loved, loved, loved the appearance of two favorite characters...made me so giddy to revisit them. I adored everything about this story, especially our little glimpse of Emma Scott’s adventure in Hawaii 🤣...and the fact that even this brief glimpse into Faith’s life was filled with happiness, love and peace.

So looking forward to the other stories in this anthology!

Story reviewed: Saint by Colleen Hoover.

I draw the line at cheating, that should tell you enough. I love CoHo but gotta be honest, it was not good, too messed up and it just leaves you feeling awful.

I tried to read the other stories but some were so ridiculous I quit after two pages or so, and moved onto reading Saint which is the main reason I got this book anyway.

5 brilliant stars for Saint by Colleen Hoover

A quick read that got me hooked from beginning to end. Well, Colleen, you really need to grace us with more thrillers in the future. Man, this woman never fails to amaze me in whatever genre she writes, and that's one of the many reasons why she's my favorite! 😍
This short story is twisted, very twisted! But once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down. CoHo put a book-length worth of words into a short story. She's a genius of words!! Can't wait for her upcoming novel! 😁

Review: THE DEAL by Aleatha Romig

A quick, dark, little snippet of sin set in the sensual city of New Orleans...I truly hope there’s more to come of Rett and Emma!

True to Aleatha fashion, I’m invested after just one short meeting...this has the makings of another twisted and tantalizing world I’d like to get lost in.

Just finish reading The Deal by Aleatha Romig and I need more of Rhett Ramses and Emma O'Brien.
Set in seductive New Orleans, this novella is fast and sensual. Rhett is mysterious and seductive. Emma is in for secrets and intriguing ride.
A very tempting first taste, The Deal only leaving me with wanting more

I only got this to read Saint by Colleen Hoover, and it did not disappoint! She described it as a romantic thriller, and for the first half, I couldn't really see why, but then it picked up speed and didn't let go! It was chilling until the end and I'm glad I picked this up. I'd give it 4 stars just because the beginning was a little slow.

My review is for Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters, by Emma Scott

Wow, I love Faith, she hasn't lost her sass since Someday, Someday but it looks like she found her perfect match in Asher her hot hero! Such a sweet uplifting story, I would love to see more of these characters because they're so adorable and this was just a glimpse into their romance whilst still giving us a full story! Did I mention how hot Ash is?!?!?!

I look forward to seeing what else this anthology is going to dish up, such an interesting idea!
