(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Found an old review that I forgot to post from a couple of years ago. -------------- Book 1 Still reading paused to say.... I now do not like the love interest after he
I picked up the a 3 book box set, so I'll read the next....
---------- Book 2 A few pages in and its a huh?
Book 3 MC is still a bit thick and I still am not keen on the LI, those keep the book at a 2.25 at most.
First time read the author's work?: Not -- 2nd (I didn't like the short prequel but thought I'd give the 3 book boxset a go since I already owned it.)
Will you be reading more?: Maybe -- This is one of those authors who I like the idea enough to continue with more books, but I think I'm going to quit reviewing. I've a couple of authors like that.
Would you recommend?: Probably not.
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
“The Alice Skye Series Books 1-3: A Witch Detective Urban Fantasy (Alice Skye Boxset Book 1)” is the first compilation of stories featuring Paladin Agent Alice Skye, a Paladin Agent for the SIB (Supernatural Intelligence Bureau), who in the course of her adventures becomes an independent Paladin agent, working with the so-called Spook Squad, the supernatural squad in the local police department, and in special with Detective Brady.
As the title suggests the Boxset compiles the first full-length installments in the series, namely “Witch’s Sorrow”, “Druid’s Storm” and “Rogues Mercy”.
“Witch’s Sorrow” Alice Skye has been just hired to find a missing wolf by the Alpha of the largest Europa pack, Rexley Wild, a contract that takes eagerly, much to eagerly, discarding the consequences. Alice is still a self-taught inexperienced witch, making for her lack of formal training with a no-nonsense approach to matters, and thus, realizes the truth a little too late, because this is not a mere missing wolf case, but a much more complicated issue.
“Druid's Storm” Alice is back, ready to work and determined to shine light in her abduction and bring the culprit to justice and detaining Breeds by any means necessary, but the truth keeps evading her, and Riley Storm (the one who could bring some insights in the subject) is AWOL. In fact, Riley is trying to keep his distance intended in fulfill his role as a Guardian of Order, until the vampire genocide reach its peak and he is forced back into Alice’s life, who is working with the spook squad on solving the killings. There is, however much more going on that Alice is not fully aware of, and could derail the case for the worse.
“Rogues Mercy” This time Alice is in for some introspection, as her brother Kyle reaches out asking her for help after have being out of the picture for a long time. Kyle and Alice seem to be pursuing the very same suspect, the man that one betrayed their family. The plot offers an insight on Alice’s past showing hidden aspects of her personality and forcing Alice to take some hard decisions that seem to clash to her own moral commitments.
Taylor White’s writing is fresh and crisp; the stories are fast paced, action filled, filled with twists and turns, set in a fresh urban fantasy world, populated with all kinds of paranormal characters, a witty strong protagonist, who keeps evolving through the story, actively adapting to the ever-changing situation, and gradually becoming one of the most interesting female heroines in contemporary urban fantasy. All secondary characters are fully fleshed, and perfectly balance and complement Alice throughout the story arc. The plots blend the right amount of drama, chemistry, and romance to add spice to the adventures without overshadowing the action. It is not only a fresh brand-new take on classic Urban Fantasy elements, but also highly addictive, thus be aware of the natural side effects attributed to a possible lack of sleep 😉
This series is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Great plot line, unique magic system, sexy men around, but still having a bad ass female lead who is her own complete woman! Love the romance since it’s there but it’s definitely a good slow burn one that enhances the story and the plot line!
The only thing I’m not a HUGE fan on is the lack of supporting female characters for Alice I love her and Sam’s friendship but also feel like we could’ve had a few more females involved to enjoy having Alice have that dynamic as well. Otherwise this absolutely an awesome book series! So excited to 1. Read the rest of Alice’a story but also I see more books that have the guardians own storylines! So excited for that as well:)
I love the story, but the FMC annoys me. She's one of those "I'm strong and independent who doesn't need help." Only she constantly needs to get rescued because of her decisions. She's not completely hopeless, though, and I'm hoping she learns and grows. The storyline is amazing, and I want to know what's going to happen next. I like this series, and a book that makes you invested is a good read to me.
I have really enjoyed this book and the previous two. My only complaint is that as it is set in London it should have been proof read by someone British. There are too many American phrases and words that are inappropriate to a UK native.
Alice is a witch and a Paladin, working for a supernatural enforcement agency. She is in pursuit of the male who killed her parents and started her brother on a journey to become a Daemon. Can she catch the murderer, help her brother and retain her freedom?
Interesting and engaging read. I just wish there weren’t so many errors, most of which could have been corrected with a basic spell check. I corrected a few but it would’ve taken too much time to note them all.
What a fabulous new series.. truly a page turner I had to struggle to slow down lol.. so I could enjoy it more. Very well written and full of everything you could want.
Honestly, books were not exempt of default but I liked it😁 I was really into the global storyline, books were pages turners I did not see the time passed , the worldbuiling is good. Romance is slow burn 🥰 it was cute and loved Alice’s humour. For the default, a lot of questions are not answered quickly, it take time and every time Alice asked questions, nobody answer it pissed me off ( rex , dread , Riley, Kyle) they have answer but they said nothing and it slow down the story. The heroine is too much ignorant and did not do properly research 🧐, she is too passive and not enough active to find the truth. And one big interrogation for the author. Why there are so many men in the casting, why don’t we see more female ( Riley’s Groupe : all men , close family men ; Wolf pack : men etc..)
