This was a VERY long book. It is probably the most in-depth history on the life of St. Francis that I have ever seen or read. This was more of an encyclopedia of the saint's life, rather than a novel.
To give the average reader an idea of its length, it takes about an hour to read just 7-8% of the book on Kindle. The language is descriptive and lengthy in nature, meaning that one has to be stubborn enough to get through the book.
It has taken a VERY LONG time to get through this and , honestly, I probably do not remember 90% of it. However, I have a much deeper appreciation for St. Francis because of this book and have gained further insight into his nature and character.
🖋️ Father Candide Chalippe ((O.F.M.)) gives a rich biography of Saint Francis of Assisi, weaving spiritual guidance into the historical account with depth. Yet despite its strengths, the dryness of his writing and the frequent digressions sometimes made reading it feel weighed down by commentary that does not always serve the story. It is a lengthy and outstanding work, although it did take me a couple years reading it, on and off, and I finally finished reading it.
Maybe for some it would be a beneficial read, but I found it too long, and it seemed embellished. I'd rather read a theological text from which I might gain some knowledge.
