Guys from High School #1

Jon From High School

Rate this book
What happens when your high school bully—the unfairly hot one—shoves you against a locker?
You kiss him.

I thought it would fend him off. Gross him out.

But what happens when he likes it?

Never in my wildest dreams did I think he’d come back for more. I’m just an emo band kid, and he’s… well, he’s that jock type:

Super straight. Basketball practice. Locker rooms.

“No-homo.”

Heh. We’ll see about that, won’t we?

Because it keeps happening, again and again.

Every time, we go a little further…

But there’s a problem. A BIG problem.

You’d never guess it from looking at me, but I’m big.

Too big.

There’s something real growing between us, but is it enough to keep him around? Or will the fear of coming out of the closet—and my XL size—scare him away for good?

***Author’s Note: This is a standalone straight-to-gay romance novel. It’s got scenes so hot, I had to keep taking breaks from writing them to take cold showers. Oh, did I mention there’s a shower scene in the locker room? Enemies to lovers. High school bully romance. No triggers. Jock on bottom, high on feels. Make sure you’ve got a glass of ice water and some tissues nearby. Enjoy.

This story was necessary, yes one of the main characters is a bully, and yes, the other falls in love with said bully. But this is so much more.

This is REAL, this shit happens, the only reason Jon was a bully was because of fear (doesn't make it right, but things are what they are, and that is also our fault as a society), and the only reason Victor liked him was because Jon showed him his true self, his reasons, his soul, and also they had amazing chemistry but, this so much more.

Is about fear, misunderstandings, confusion, love, attraction, hurt, pain, compasión. It's about a closeted scared guy who doesn't wants to see his life ruined and another guy who is out and confident but is an outcast because of it, who is the beacon of light for this other guy. And jesus the pain, I cried with this shit!

And the injustices that both had to face in their own journeys, I need a drink! Awesome book, awesome story, real as fuck, and I need a moment. 🍫

One Star for the one scene that the author decided to repeat over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over…. And over again. Oh and the ending was insanely rushed and out of nowhere. …… and the relationship was pointless and they are the same people in that damn relationship at 28 as they were at 18. No development.

Bye. Now I must go beat my head against a rock. 👍🏻😍😃

Hmm I’m just not sure, maybe 3.5-4 stars, it was a really abrupt ending.

MM high school/college bully romance, enemies to lovers, spans a decade.

Loved it albeit Im a tad bit disappointed.
From the blurb and how much it is made from the "XXL Dick" specially during the "high school" bit of the boo theres very little sex in the book...and if you are hoping for steamy first time, there simply inst one which is unfortunate all things considered.

I had mixed feelings. I love the bully to lovers trope. I hate the 10 yr separation and super melodramatic reunion. I love the reversal of roles where the jock is the virgin when it comes to gay relationships. Overall, I enjoyed the book and it’s a feel-good MM romance.

DNF @28%

Both characters are caricatures. Victor was the caricature of the loner, emo kid who listens to punk rock (but badly done) and Jon was the captain of the (whatever) team, the stoic, dumb character. They were walking cliches. The entire story was a cliche. I thought it was going to go in a different direction but nope. This is something I would see in AO3 or Tumblr.

Jon was the star basketball player in school, he constantly bullied Vincent, the emo band kid, yet he secretly lusted after him. So far, so stereotypical. Unfortunately, the writing style is stilted, with page upon page of inner dialogue, all tell and not much show. I struggled to finish the book.

SO HEARTBREAKING SO POWERFUL
THIS STORY REALLY GOT TO ME. I FOUND IT REALLY HEARTBREAKING AND PAINFUL AT TIMES. I DONT THINK WE TRUELY UNDERSTAND THE PAIN THAT SOME MEN/BOYS GO THROUGH BECAUSE THEY FIGHT WITH THERE OWN BODY AND NEEDS BECAUSE OF FEAR OF NOT BEING EXCEPTED FOR WHO THEY ARE.
ITS ABOUT TWO BOYS.
ONE BOY IS A JOCK A BIG STAR WITHIN HIS HIGH SCHOOL, THE BIG BAD BASKETBALL PLAYER WHO HAD RICH FRIENDS THAT WERE BULLIES TO PEOPLE THEY DIDNT LIKE. THE SECOND BOY WAS A SHY EMO BOY WHO KNEW HE WAS GAY FROM A YOUNG AGE AND EXCEPTED IT.
JON PRESTON ALWAYS BULLIED VICTOR, VICTOR NEVER KNEW WHAT HE HAD DONE TO JON TO MAKE HIM HATE HIM, BUT EVERY CHANCE HE GOT JON HURT HIM IN HIS OWN WAY UNTIL ON DAY AFTER PRACTICE WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGED. INSTEAD OF HURTING HIM, JON PUSHED HIM UP AGAINST HIS LOCKER AND KISSED HIM. VICTOR WAS SHOCKED BUT IT WASNT LONG TILL HE WAS GIVING AS GOOD AS HE GOT. BUT JON WAS VERY WARY OF BEING CAUGHT SO THEY END UP IN THE MUSIC ROOM. A ROOM THAT VICTOR WAS VERY COMFORTABLE IN AS HE WAS PART OF THE BAND. ALTHOUGH JON MADE THE FIRST MOVE IT WASNT BECAUSE HE WANTED TO IT WAS BECAUSE HE COULDNT NOT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE FEELINGS HE WAS HAVING. BUT HIS LIFE WAS DIFFICULT. HE WANTED TO BE A BIG NAMES BASKETBALL PLAYER AND IF THEY FOUND OUT HE WAS GAY HIS DREAMS WOULD BE OVER BEFORE IT EVEN GOT TO THE COLLEGE STAGES. JON'S PARENTS WOULDNT EXCEPT HE WAS GAY, HIS FRIENDS WOULDNT TALK TO HIM IF THEY FOUND OUT HE WAS GAY. SO HE HID IT WELL GOT DRUNK AND KISSED A FEW GIRLS.
BUT JON STILL STRUGGLES WITH HIS FEELINGS AND CALLS VICTOR BUT IT ALWAYS END PAINFULLY.
COULD JON EVER EXCEPT WHO HE IS??? WILL VICTOR ALWAYS COME RUNNING????
I COULDNT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN I WAS HOOKED ON THEIR STORY. IT WAS JUST SO POWERFUL BUT SO VERY PAINFUL. IT BROKE MY HEART AT TIMES AND I JUST WANTED TO WRAP VICTOR UP IN A WARM HUG AND LET HIM KNOW HE WOULD BE OK. BUT ALSO JON BECAUSE HE NEEDED SUPPORT, TO KNOW HE WOULD BE LOVED FOR WHO HE REALLY WAS.

I did not expect to like this so much, but it’s one of those stories that just pulls you in. It's far from perfect. Everything between Jon and Victor screams TOXIC from the jump, but they clearly want to be together so you root for them to find a happy ending.

The 10 year jump from high school to adulthood was good for the story, but not for character development. It tried, but there were too many moments that made that Michael Jordan Stop It, Get Some Help meme pop into my head. Both guys have issues, but Victor has several moments where even he doesn't understand his thoughts or motives. His want to make Jon hurt should have been enough for Victor to consider therapy. Chapter 13 very nearly killed this story. Victor's words and reaction were so out of place. He may have had good reason to feel that way, but that was such a weird place to have him go off. He'd been wondering how Jon was doing then they're talking all friendly on the phone with some laughs and a few tears shared while Jon basically admits that he's ready to live as openly gay and he clearly wants a future with Victor. It was petty and juvenile. Like Victor, as a grown man, was finally getting everything his teenaged self had wanted and the hurt boy inside him reacts by spitting out all the venom he'd held in for so long. If he had had a therapist, all that would have been exorcized there instead of being dragged out as an unnecessary hurdle in his relationship with Jon.

Fortunately, the story is redeemed by the end. The conclusion of the tee shirt storyline combined with kissing in the rain almost made me love this. In the end, though, it was just too choppy for 5 stars. Both characters ran hot and cold at various times and had excessive reactions that made for a very turbulent read. I look forward to the next story though and plan to read the whole series.

Unexpectedly, Jon Preston shoved Victor Petoskey against a locker late at night in the dark high school hallway, pressing his lips against him, then deepening the kiss. A shocked Victor was wondering if this was a dream or real? Jon’s hands, so sure and steady when he played basketball, were shaking as he held them against him. Hearing a noise, they went into the dark band room. Victor knew he should stop this, he was giving away any power he might have claimed, yet he didn’t know if he would ever get another chance to be with Jon. Jon had always bullied him just like the rest of his rich friends, but something was different, at least just this once.

But it keeps happening, again and again. They both feel something real between them, but Jon has his image to maintain and knows he could throw away his “manly jock” reputation if he is seen as anything but straight. He’d lose every friend he had and his conservative parents would disown him. But is the relationship they are building enough to put Victor first? Or will Jon’s fear of people’s “labels” hold him back from loving a guy who is starting to mean so much to him?

This author is really good at presenting a very realistic picture of the consequences of being different from the majority. He is even better at allowing the reader to care about the characters, to become attached, so that emotions and feelings are made “real”. It may not always feel comfortable, but it definitely helps to make readers understand a little better, and that’s progress. Grab your copy and see what the future holds for Jon and Victor. Will he have to sacrifice family, friends, career? How will he decide what is most important?

For the first two thirds of the book I was captivated. I thought the plot was going very well, I was enjoying both characters and genuinely felt for them both. There were some steamy scenes that were very well written and detailed and there was a heckuva good story driving them.

Then came the final third of the book... The author employed a writing device that admittedly I often am not fussy for: Very small spoiler ahead, just what the device was . Okay, I could get over that. Then there was a logical place to end the book with maybe an extra chapter to tie things up. Instead it went on and on for quite a few chapters, not badly written per se, just somewhat unnecessary. Add to that a revelation which I will not spoil, but which literally had me thinking "No, don't go there! Oh, you did!", eye roll and internal groan. I think when most readers hit this point, they'll realize what I mean as it was just so unrealistic compared to the book itself.

So, it would have been a solid 4 stars for the first part, 2 stars on the last part. I did still enjoy it overall and huge kudos to the author for really capturing realistic dialogue and thoughts that truly brought me in to the story.

Note: Is on KU on the date of this review. M/M romance with detailed love scenes. Recommended to fans of m/m romance who can forgive an author that tried to squeeze too much into a story. I will read this author again.

Absolutely love it!

This really was a wonderful story. I enjoyed it from start to end. The first half when the guys were in high school , Jon coming to grips with his sexuality. Lashing out and not being able to be free to be himself. Finding peace with Victor but too ashamed to "be" with Victor. Victor, the nice kid that he was wanted to help Jon but always have to deal with his push/pull attitude. There's feelings but too many pressures of society...so sad. Then the second half...10yrs later. Both guys are mature but have the same demons. This half was very bittersweet and emotional. They reconnected but it was a long journey towards their forever after...a lot of yelling, sorrys, crying and distance...but it was worth it. One little humor element in the story that brought out a big grin/laugh was that twist with Jon's high school jock friends...classic... I loved it all! 5 STARS!!!!!

Amazing read!!!

This story checked all my boxes when it comes to an angsty read. Basically if the angst grows and matures with the characters it’s powerful, but if it remains immature it’s annoying.

I truly LOVED seeing Jon’s growth throughout the book. It really is his story. Sure we get POV chapters from Victor, but Victor never really needed to come out in any big way. He was always his gay self, neither shouting it from rooftops or hiding it. Jon however is so deep in the closet the door has rusted shut.

The angst in this story is real and it’s visceral. It’s teenagers exploring sexuality and drawing lines in the sand. It’s channeling that angst and pain into something meaningful. It’s the dawning reality that the world you thought you built was always the facade and it’s acknowledging that the outcome was inevitable. In short, it’s perfectly imperfect.

This book is a must read if you love angst and meaning in your mm romance.

A powerful journey to discovering who you are and what makes you happy...

Jon Preston denied his true feelings of what he wanted, who he was, and how to get through it. Worried about his future as a popular athlete, girls, teammates, friends and his future.

Victor Petoskey is the type of student who is often ignored by jocks under normal circumstances, is surprised to get the attention from the most popular jock.

Jon lives a life of secrets and Victor may get tired of being the crutch but not the one. Fighting their feelings for one another, running away only to come back. Will this painful situation continue or will one finally throw in the towel? Can the be the love each other needs. Can Jon and Victor be the home the other man wants?

Have plenty of tissues. You may need them.

Wonderful

This was so good! Hot and realistic but over the top and too dramatic and funny and a little cheesy at times and that was a perfect combination and that's exactly what made this work. The sex scenes were so realistic like hot but still something that you can picture people experience in real life, I usually read from women perspective since lots of women write romance books and I'm always
looking for a good male romance representation, so good. This books is intense and it's starts like that but at the same time it's light hearted and heart warming, I'm definetly reading the next books on the series. Short and easy read with lots of steamy realistic scenes.

Bully jock and a emo outcast.

HFN. HEA but it ended abruptly.
🌶 1/5 in spice.
Enemies to lovers.
Huge time jump of ten years. So second chance at love though one MC didn't say it.

Victor is a emo dude and Jon is a jock. They definitely had angst. A love hate relationship of messing around, then hating each other again. The time jump was something I wasn't expecting. I'm not a huge fan of things like that and it blindsided me. The sex was borderline erotica but then again not, it was more of an emotional thing at the end of the book. Not very detailed.
They did get a semi-ok HEA, more openly and HFN.

Eh, the idea was better than its execution.

Maybe it needed more... build-up, before that first scene. Maybe skipping a few years forward to "correct" the situation instead of making it okay in high school, maybe it was just a general problem. Either way, the only thing I would call positive is the attempt to explain the reasons behind bullying and trying to play and explain the power balance but even that failed short of truly making it work.

Basically, I expected something. Something better? Either way, I didn't really get it. Not bad but neither is it a really good book.

You know what… I thought this book was a winner. High school, (18 and/or over) bully romance, jock. You know all that jazz. However!

I get that it’s high school; but why was it written like a 16 year old boy who keeps popping boners? I am sorry, the writing was painful, the constant reference to songs is just annoying. Oh he’s emo, let’s just make sure everyone knows!

Also this line

“My cock erupted from the tip, squirting my jizz all over Jon Preston’s face like a super soaker.”

A super soaker? Really?

DNF … that just tipped me over the edge.

3.5 stars 🩵 i flip flopped between ratings but i think this suits, i enjoyed this book for the most part, the ending was quite sweet although i do think there should’ve been an epilogue bc i love them, the only thing that jarred me was the 10 year time jump, although maybe that was my fault bc the title probably should’ve given me a hint but i was under the impression it was totally set in high school and then there was an abrupt jump, that’s what stopped me mainly from rating it higher, but overall i did enjoy it and will probably did sus the rest of the books in the series!

I admire anyone that will publish a book. That takes guts.

I’m giving this 2.5 stars rounding up. I enjoyed the songs since they brought be back to my high school. There was a lot of back and forth here and really no meat to the story and I really mean zero meat. I did find myself skimming through a good chunk of it.

Overall I read the whole thing. But I don’t think at this time I’d read anymore of this series. But got on the author for publishing a book.

While I liked the characters and the plot I think it just didn’t deliver on the writing and the story. So many things were repetitive, the characters never really progressed. Ok yes Jon stopped hiding in the closet eventually but after the whole thing about how scared he was to come out, his actual coming out was…nothing. I really wanted to like this more. It had so much potential, it just didn’t feel complete.

Interesting read

I found this book to be more interesting than I expected. I was at the point throughout the whole book that I couldn’t wait to read what would happen next. Would have loved to read the stories of Kyle, Phil & Terry as sequels. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was due to grammatical errors. I would read it again! Good job!

Must read.

This book ripped my heart out and stitched it back together. It was amazing to watch Jon grow and become the man he thought he wanted to be, only to realize he wasn't really living at all. Then for Victor to use his pain to create something magical that healed and helped so many was inspiring. This book tore me apart and I loved every minute of it.

This is what I love about my KU membership. I can one click a 'new to me' author and find a gem. Jon has bullied Vic relentlessly until they kiss. Jon can't ignore the chemistry between them any longer. There are lots of ups and downs and intense passion. This is a cracking story and I'll definitely be stalking the authors other books.

Well written

For those that like angsty romances you will love this. I didnt realise it would be so angsty nor did i note the time jump that would happen, another thing i dislike. Nothing negative about the book, its wasnt for me as i hate books when so much time passes and they are apart as the romance never rings true to me.

Okay-ish.

Straight jock Jon pushes emo-boy Victor against a locker, kisses him and their hot and cold relationship begin.

I found this story to be sad for both of the characters. They had no will to do better, their constant pushing eachother in and out got me really bored at some point. I kept reading anyway, because I really wanted to see them together.
They both had a lot of things to work on in their personalities and lives.

As someone said, this had a potential to be a really good story.
However, it ended up being just a story.

had a YA feel, though sometimes difficult to imagine boys that age thinking/talking in that articulate/thoughtful way. Not sure why the big d*** is part of the plot LOL can't see the storyline needs it. Not actually that heated, either, more angsty emotional between them. Great cover.
