A young maid is catapulted into an inventor’s explosive world the night his experiment goes awry. In a desperate attempt to save his life, and her job, Louisa finds herself on the precipice of a new life. As long as she manages to hold her tongue, and her un-lady-like curses, she could have everything her mother dreamed for her – but is that what she really wants?

Juggling the layers of lies knotted into her existence, it’s time for Louisa to face her future or die trying.

Growing up in Ontario, Canada, MJ was the only child of a single mom. MJ’s passion for the arts ignited at a young age as she wrote adventure stories and read them aloud to close family and friends. The dramatic arts became a focus in high school as an aid to understanding character motivation in her writing. Majoring in Theatre Production at University, with a minor in English, she went on to teach both elementary and high school for 10 years throughout Simcoe County.

MJ currently lives with her husband and son in Ontario, Canada. She keeps busy these days writing, helping Indie Authors, and talking about books as a local librarian. She firmly believes that if she hadn’t been born a Virgo, she would not be half as organized as necessary to accomplish everything in her daily agenda.

What a fun adventure! Louisa Wicker has a buried past that enables her to straddle the social classes in Victorian London by day, as she morphs into the city's masked guardian by night. MJ Moores colorful descriptions and lively dialogue propel the individual episodes on, binding them together in a complete journey. Though I am glad I didn't have to wait in between episodes 😉, I do appreciate the different tack in publishing.

Steampunk fans will adore the Steamys, landaus, and airbusses in the story. Technology is an important part of the setting and plot, but from an environmental perspective—London is experiencing an awful drought, to which the Queen is desperate for a solution. Louisa and her mentor work studiously to perfect their invention and become the target of the jealousy and greed of a society elite. Conflict abounds, in all sorts of settings, and threads of romance begin to appear. It ticked all my entertainment boxes!

If you enjoy the steampunk genre, Shadow Phoenix: Volume I, Episodes 1-4: A YA Steampunk Vigilante Superhero Serial is a fun, quicker read. M.J. Moores's London is tangible and easy to get lost in, promising more adventures for Louisa and her comrades. I look forward to reading the next installment of Episodes 5-8!

Louisa is a girl with many secrets. Juggling these secrets becomes a full-time job, especially after she inadvertently saves a boy from a mugging and the newspapers dub her the Shadow Phoenix, sometimes a savior of the city, sometimes a rogue vigilante.
Against the backdrop of a world full of amazing inventions, strong women and villains with the power to rule cities, Shadow Phoenix is an amazing and explosive adventure. MJ Moores captures the elegance and mystery of steampunk and delivers a heroine in Louisa that I can truly root for.

A great teen steampunk read! I love reading stories with a Victorian era slant, which is very much part of the steampunk gendre. The characters were relatable and real and there are quite a variety of stories that weave and connect throughout the book. There are failures and triumphs and through it all Louisa, the Shadow Phoenix, changes and grows into her own courage. But can she face the one challenge that is kept secret until near the end of the book? That, I'm sure, is for Volume 2.
