Discover the remarkable life of Ernest Shackleton... Free BONUS Inside! Ernest Shackleton was not just a great explorer—he was also a great commander. When the chips were down, he could always be depended upon to put others ahead of himself. Shackleton knew how to push the limits until he was able to exceed well above even the most generous of expectations that had been laid out for him. Yet time and time again, he also proved to be a compassionate leader who made sure that he never left a single man behind on his expeditions. This compassionate concern for those under his charge was brilliantly evidenced in his famous journey to the Antarctic on the ship prophetically named the Endurance. The mission’s main objective would prove to be a failure, but what Shackleton achieved in terms of common humanity was stunning all the same. In this book, you will find presented in full the life, the legend, and the enduring spirit of one of the greatest adventurers this world has ever known—Sir Ernest Shackleton. Interesting little book. I took a reading challenge called “Book Voyage: Read Around the World” for 2021. I’ve always been interested in Shackleton’s explorations and I’ve always been fascinated with Antarctica so I thought for January “Arctic & Antarctic” reading, I’d grab this short biography. If you want a quick read of basic but interesting events in his life of explorations, failures, and successes, this might be your read. He was a determined explorer who wanted to be the first to the South Pole. Even when not reaching his goal he persevered and made 3 trips with exciting (and scary) adventures.
Lowk got myself into a rabbit hole about Ernest Shackleton after my last book LOL I found this at the library and decided to get it since it had some more info about the story and lots of wildlife pics of Antarctica. I enjoyed it
Ernest Shackleton early on acquired an ambition to explore the Antarctic and to be the first to reach the South Pole. He made three expeditions, the second of which his ship, the Endeavour, froze in the water and sank.
A Norwegian expedition was the first to reach the South Pole, but Shackleton still wanted to achieve his goal. On the third expedition, his health failed and he died.
What a most interesting read… After recently watching a PBS special on history’s greatest mysteries, I remembered that I had downloaded this hourly history of Shackleton. What this book did was fill in the blanks of those early years of his life, his trials, his tribulations and his victories. He was indeed an incredible individual with much fortitude and a extremely intense desire for exploration, most specifically of Antarctica.
I learned a lot about Shackleton in this brief biography. It turns out that what I heard about him was all wrong. For some reason I had the idea that he had died while his ship was frozen in the ice of the Antarctic. I felt tense as I began reading because I thought the book would be a description of a horrible death with much suffering in the ice and cold. I learned that Shackleton was quite an adventurer, and he had actually traveled to Antarctica several times, and his death was not what I had imagined.
I have read many books about polar expeditions, and especially Shackleton. I was very surprised at all I learned in this book. I suppose it was fitting that his largest adventure is covered in such short fashion, but that is why I learned so much. This book fills in the "back story" of Shackleton's life, and I found it fascinating. Well written!
He was a man with a vision and nothing seem to stop him. His character of dedication and pursuit of a dream motivated him but didn't affect his leadership qualities and love for his crew.
There is distilled, and then their is downright anemic
This is far from a real biography, and maybe I just missed that when I downloaded, but this is adequate for a 4th grade book report and really nothing else.
Even more than most of the hourly history books - and I read a lot of them for the general knowledge - this one is little more than a collection of freshman-level book reports *almost* synthesized into a cohesive presentation.
