Dark and gruesome

The first book was good, the second is fantastic.
The story line is on the dark side, being about racial hatred and KKK 'type', attacks. The murders brutal and gruesome. But it is all told in an action packed story that doesn't glamourize the violence.
There is more development of the main characters, I really want to read more about these people. And I will, I have already bought the third and fourth book.

This is the second book in a series featuring Jake Boulder, I read the first, Watching the Bodies a few months ago and was seriously impressed! Jake is a fantastic lead with a unique viewpoint, I may even have a bit of a crush on him and I don’t think I’m alone there. He has that whole bad boy thing going on, he’s kind of grumpy but his sarcasm and quick wit are so appealing to me. With a strong protagonist and an exciting plot combined with a fluid, easy writing style this series is one crime fiction fans don’t want to miss.

The story follows Jake as he tries to help Alfonse find the people who killed his cousin and his entire family in a horrific manner. The methods the killer uses were sick, twisted and highly disturbing. This is a graphic read, Smith pulls no punches, it’s hard hitting and in your face, but very purposeful. The storyline was so timely as it deals with hate crimes and was especially unsettling in the wake of the current events here in the US. This had a complex plot and plenty of misdirection, I never could predict what would happen next.

This was incredibly fast paced, an electrifying read with more thrills than my poor heart could handle. Since Boulder is not bound by the law he’s able to chase leads in exciting ways, really get down and dirty and is one of my favorite aspects of this series. Smith is such a unique storyteller with a strong voice, I cannot wait to see what happens in book three!!

I’m so excited to be the next stop on the North American blog tour for The Kindred Killers, the second book in Graham Smith’s Jake Boulder series.

When Jake Boulder’s best friend Alfonse comes to him for help investigating the murders of his cousin and family, Jake wants to do everything he can to help find their killer. What he stumbles into is so much more than he expected. As a series of grisly murders continue to happen in his home town, Jake makes it his mission to find the killers before they can strike again. Unfortunately for Jake, once the FBI take over the case, they tell him to stay away. Not one to give in easily, he takes it upon himself to solve the case, despite the fact that it may mean risking his own life in the process.

Earlier this year I took part on the blog tour for Watching the Bodies, the first book in the series, and I was seriously impressed! Of course, when I was asked to participate in the tour for the sequel, I jumped at the chance! I have to say, while I really enjoyed the first book in the series, I absolutely adored this one! I couldn’t get enough, and wasn’t ready for it to end!

Jake Boulder is such a badass character. He kicks butt, takes names, and is instrumental to solving recent police cases despite the fact that he’s not actually on the police force. Despite his rough exterior and the fact that he’s always the winner in bar fights, he still has a conscious, which I love. He fights when he has to, not because he wants to. He knows he has some emotional issues stemming from his past that affect his relationship with his current girlfriend, and I’m really looking forward to reading future books in the series, because I’m so interested in that aspect of Jake’s personal life!

This book was fast paced, dark, and thrilling, and I couldn’t get enough of it – I didn’t want to put it down! Smith did an excellent job writing very gruesome murders that were different from what I’ve read in other thrillers, and I loved it! The end of the book had my heart racing, and I loved how everything played out. Normally I’m not a huge fan of epilogues, but in this case, I would have loved to see one that told us a little bit more about what happened to the bad guys after some time had gone by – that’s how invested I was!

All in all, this book surpassed my expectations, and I highly recommend it to all thriller lovers! While it is part of a series, and I definitely recommend reading the first book, this one can be read as a standalone. A huge thank you to Bloodhound Books and Graham Smith for an advanced copy of the book. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review. The Kindred Killers is out now, so be sure to pick up your copy!

The Kindred Killers is the second installment in the Jake Boulder series, and dare I say, even better than Watching The Bodies. Something about this one got under my skin from the get go and I genuinely could not put it down.

In this book, Boulder is tasked with helping Alfonse, whose cousin was found crucified and burned alive along with his wife and kids. This horriffic crime seems to only be the beginning though. What follows is a speight of crimes that, though heinous and horriffic, are not gratuitous in their depictions. I found myself feeling anxious for Boulder with every new report because he just couldn’t catch a break in terms of evidence and catching whoever was responsible.

I’m not going to go into the plot any more than that. But I urge you, if you are looking for clever, well-plotted American crime writing with a thrilling edge, then this book (let’s be honest, the series!) should be on your list.

These books are pure escapism, in the best way possible. The Kindred Killers has it all. It is packed to the rafters with action, has a male lead that could stand proudly with the Reachers and the John Miltons of the world, and plenty of heart to boot.

Highly recommended!

OMFG What-A-Book! I absolutely LOVED Watching The Bodies (read my full review on www.crimebookjunkie.co.uk) but this book totally knocked that book out of the water!

Set in Casperton, Utah – the reader is faced with some hard-hitting themes: hate crimes; racism; bigotry; homophobia; abandonment; fear; relationships; discrimination – all of which get under the readers skin. What I love about Graham Smith’s writing is the fact that he doesn’t sensationalise these things – instead, he allows the reader to sit back and reflect on issues that are current, emotive and thought-provoking.

Jaysus! My heart was in my throat throughout this page-turning read -starting with the opening chapter! Once again, Mr Smith does not disappoint in delivering #AllTheFrigginBooms and making sure that the all important #killerhook grabs the reader right from the start. This was a fast-paced, high action thriller that threw out so many WTAF-moments, my swear jar over-floweth! The writing is tight, focused, with a strong narrative and a scary realism that left me shivering with goosebumps. The killings were gruesome, but by no mean gratuitous and my kindle was on fire from all the mad-clicking to race through the pages! Any real violence is left off the page and to the readers imagination, so if you cringe – blame yourself!

I am a big lover of characters, and Graham Smith is a master at creating characters that readers invest in. We follow them through the pages, feel what they feel, and urge them to succeed (or in the case of baddies -fail) and most importantly, we always want to see them again! This book is rich with said characters and I just wish I could mention them all! But I won’t – I will, however start with my fave — oh yeah, ladies and gents – Jake Boulder is back and there are #NoHoldsBarred as we see him tackle some tough murders that will have some readers wondering WTAF?! He is determined, loyal and fiercely protective. And EEEEEK – wait until you see what happens with Jake – #NoSpoilers – but let me tell you ladies….there may be some…well, read the book….find out for yourself how that sentence ends!

Dr Edwards is firm becoming another favourite of mine. I have a real soft spot for this character. I love his quid pro quo way of working with Jake – they have this little psychological dance that draws the reader in and leaves them on tenterhooks, waiting for what will follow. How much more can we learn about Jake? Dr Edwards is the man to show us! Love it!

Taylor is a receptionist at Dr Edwards office. OMG- she is amazing. I want to be Taylor. Smart, fun and she captures Boulder’s interest – but how long can she keep it? Boulder is not known for his commitment to the ladies….but there is something about Taylor and I just LOVED how this played out. YAY!

Alfonse needs his #BFF as members of his family go missing and he has no trust in the Casperton police force. The banter as well as the strong bond between Jake and Alfonse is brought to the forefront of this novel and we really see how much this pair really work well together despite some niggles that come with long-standing friendships.

The Augiers, Farrage, Boulder’s mom Ivy and Chief Watson are supporting characters who really add to the story – though some more than others. But the final one I want to…no NEED to mention is Ms Rosenberg – what a fantastic character! I adored her crass, brass and sassy nature in Watching the Bodies. All of these characteristics and more shine through in the second book of this awesome series. I really can’t say much about her without giving away spoilers – but I can say…WOW, Mr Smith…..just….WOW!

This book is not for the faint-hearted, but the kick will knock you flat on your backside and surely that is what you want in an action packed, crime thriller – right!? Have I already said that I LOVED Watching The Bodies? – well my bookish friends – I absolutely LOVE this one EVEN more and I knew from the moment I read this book that it was special. It is special, and it really sets the reader up for one hell of a journey! There is a lot of introspection as well – how we perceive things, people, the labels we use – all things that seem to be ingrained in us from an early age. OMFG what an emotive, thrilling and utterly compelling read that has made me ever so excited!!!

Graham Smith– you have done it again and I cannot shout out about you, your writing and this series enough! I cannot WAIT to see what you have in store for Jake, Alfonse and the rest of the characters in the next instalment of the series….

I have now read all of Graham Smiths books and enjoyed every single one. He has the honour of being the only author who’s books I actually read in my head in his voice! Bizarre I know but ever since hearing Graham talk for the very first time, that’s exactly what I hear whilst reading! And I am absolutely loving this new series featuring Jake Boulder! This second book could possibly be read as a standalone but I think YOU NEED TO HAVE THE FULL JAKE BOULDER EXPERIENCE so please do read the first one too! Book one, Watching The Bodies, is where we first meet Jake and Alphonse and if you need any more persuasion than that then you can read my review of that book HERE.

Now everyone knows I love a Scotman so I’m sure it’s no surprise to you all that I’m a HUGE fan of Jake Boulder! This Scottish born bad boy has a fierce determination that will bode him well here as this case is probably one of the hardest he will ever have to deal with (although book 3 is on it’s way and goodness knows what Grahams warped imagination will come up with for that one!). A warning now that this book is not for the faint hearted! The murders are both gruesome and heartbreaking in equal measure and I was holding my breath hoping that the outcome wouldn’t be as horrific as I imagined (it was!). And as Jake is pretty handy with his fists, expect plenty of violence from him as well!

This is a brilliant read. Brutally fast paced, socially relevant and full of gripping plot twists. The characters are well developed and complex with a real sense of presence on the page. I still adored Jakes mother and this time there was a little bit more background into some of their family secrets which then gave an added edge to what we already knew about Jakes past.

I flew through The Kindred Killers the minute it appeared on my kindle, gulping it down in one greedy session whilst trying to take time to acknowledge its horrifically topical storyline. And now I’m on countdown to book three in the series which can’t come quickly enough for me! If you’ve not read any books by this author before then you are really missing out and you definitely need to give this series a go! Highly recommended by me!

Watching The Bodies was a great start to a new crime series and was very much looking forward to the next in the series, The Kindred Killers. I wouldn’t say it was essential to have read the first book in the series as this does work well as a stand alone.

Graham Smith is a man who knows how to shock his readers. I thought the serial killer in the first book was twisted but the killers in this, wow! He really takes the shock factor to the next level. The way the victims get killed in this book certainly are not for the faint hearted. They were particularly gruesome yet it had me so engrossed in the whole story I really couldn’t get enough. I think I must have read this book with a series O mouth going on.

We see more of Jake and Alfonse’s working relationship and friendship which I enjoyed as Alfonse was more in the back ground in the first one. I really felt for him as to have family members killed in such a gruesome way was just horrific. Not only that, he obviously wants answers and whoever is responsible to pay for their actions. We also find out a bit more background to Jake which will definitely interest fans though I have a feeling the author still has a lot more to share with us!

The Kindred Killers is a seriously great follow up to what is already set to be a brilliant series. It’s one of those books that thrilled and excited me and that left me desperate to talk about it with other readers. For me that really is the sign of a great book. Can not wait for the next book now as the author has truly shown he is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to writing crime books.

I am thanking all my gods that I don't live inside Graham Smith's head! What an imagination. This book is not for the faint hearted or those with a delicate disposition! The murders are totally gruesome, and no detail is spared. An absolutely brilliant read. Mr Smith ensures the reader knows and feels a connection with each and every murder victim and their loved ones. My heart was broken time and time again. What I wouldn't give to have Jake and Alfonse in my corner. What a partnership those two make. I thoroughly enjoyed making their acquaintance. The chief of police was also an excellent character, and I was very taken with the concept of him working with Jake, having respect for a 'civilian' and appreciating everything that he and Alfonse had to offer to the investigation. I am delighted to recommend this well written, beautifully constructed and executed story. I will certainly be looking out and reading everything and anything Mr Smith has written. 5 fulsome stars from me

Flippin’ heck! Mind blown! Need a minute!

Whew! Okay, here we go.

Not that long ago, I discovered Graham Smith’s work and lost myself in the world of the brooding hunk of a man that is Jake Boulder. Since then, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next book in the series and when I was offered the opportunity to read it, it felt like my birthday had come early!

The Kindred Killers is the second instalment in the Jake Boulder series and it is absolutely mind-blowing! Yes, I’m aware I’ve already used that word but it fits perfectly!

Jake’s best friend Alphonse asks for his help when his cousin and his family go missing. Sadly there is no good news as the family is found horribly murdered. They are found to have been crucified and burned alive. And with that, the tone is set for a cruel and disturbing story that is unfortunately still rather apt and relevant these days. Some of these events may not be for the faint-hearted as they are quite brutal and stomach-churning but I feel it’s necessary to point out that none of it’s gratuitous and the author manages to set the scene as sympathetically as possible.

The return of Jake Boulder was most definitely worth the wait and this series just keeps getting better. I was utterly engrossed in the case and completely blown away by the reasoning behind the initial killings. I also really always enjoy it when an author takes the time to introduce us to a character so that even though you know deep down something is going to happen to them, it packs the most astounding punch when that something actually happens.

I continue to enjoy the friendship between Jake and Alphonse. Despite the strain they’re under and the grief Alphonse needs to deal with, they know each other so well that even when tempers rise, you know this bond won’t break. (Gee, I hope I didn’t jinx them now!)

I may have said it before but it’s worth saying again : Graham Smith has fast become one of my favourite authors and I honestly can’t wait to read more, be it about Jake Boulder or something else entirely! And you, yes you (!), should pick up this Jake Boulder series right now and get caught up! I promise you won’t regret it!

This unbiased review is part of the blog tour organized by Bloodhound Books. I'd like to thank them for letting me participate!

For once, I’m able to review a series in order! Champagne!

I was glad to meet Jake Boulder again after such an ending in the first book!

I have already said how much I enjoy the fact Jake has nothing to do with the police or isn’t even a private investigator. I was eagerly waiting for the next reason that would put him on the line of fire. There were many questions in my head as I began reading!

Dead may be dead, but there are good and bad days to die.

I was definitely not disappointed. The author picks a sadly current theme, even in our century, when most of us would love to see it locked in the past. The plot is tightly weaved, no room for any wrongs, you are on a path, as blind as the main character, and you just have to make do with what’s being given through each chapter, each body, each event. My heart stopped so many times as I read atrocities done to innocent people, the writing can’t leave you indifferent. My reactions mirrored those of the characters (the good ones!) and I felt immersed in a part of the world we often turn a blind eye to. It is so easy when you’re not a target to forget the nightmare of those who are. The issue was sensitively explored, although I might have wanted to know more about characters’ positions and the town’s reaction to the events. Still, it was done with enough realism that I couldn’t help but feel so hopeless and wishing there was something I could do.

If you need a case of useless police force, you’re in the right place! I did chuckle at the big FBI clichés with their cars and I’m happy the author did not go this way, but I was expecting a little more work from the local cops.

The Kindred Killers doesn’t do gifts and balloons. It punches you in the gut, it makes your pulse race, it gives room to questions without answers, and you get your fair share of adrenaline as Jake is still very much using his muscles!

A Glasgow upbringing isn't something you can escape.

Thank you, Graham Smith, for the surprise hidden inside the story including a friend of mine. Well, thank you is a difficult thing to say when you keep on reading and realize what’s happening, haha!

Thank you too for not making it easy to discover what is going on. An uppercut, a hint, a blow, a disappearance, you can’t be bored when reading this story! This is a hunt. In fact, there are two hunts, and preys fall as easily as autumn leaves.

I always appreciate a bit of testosterone and this book has just the right amount to make you smell the alpha males without making Jake a big fat cliché of Mister Muscle with no emotions again, a fantastic point. I would have more trouble reading his stories if Jake was a cold man whose thoughts were hidden even from the reader. Here we find him still hurt from the previous story, emotionally instable and full of interrogations. We often take killing for granted in the genre in general, but Jake took a life, and he has to live with the aftermath. I loved that we get to see him struggle with this fact and wear this burden. It would have been easy for the author to throw in a few nightmares before completely obliterating the fact, but instead, Graham Smith use it as a foundation for his character to grow and face some of his demons. I was glad for him and couldn’t help but root for a brighter path for Jake. But of course, where light comes shining, darkness rises on the other side and life doesn’t leave anyone alone…

The Kindred Killers is a race against blood thirsty monsters which puts its main characters into the kind of dreams you never want to have. The book doesn’t shy away from anything and give you a 360 degrees view of the day of a regular guy torn but ready to do what’s right. I love rooting for the good guys!

Well when an author normally begins a new series they deliver a bright and keen new DI but not Graham Smith, no. Graham Smith moves his new series to the USA and heads the cast of charters with a very loveable rogue that deals with life, at times, through a bottle, though he is trying to at least remember what leads to each fall down now a days, as well as him being a man who likes nothing better than a darn good punch up, as long as he is doing the fighting! Well I loved the first book and knew that it would take a lot to hit that unique spot again but this surpasses everything so far that I have read of his. This is close up and personal and Jake Boulder is ruffled and nothing will die the fire out in this man until he gets justice and I mean JAKE BOULDER justice!
There are some real nut jobs in the world and Graham Smith has captured the essence of the worst kind, in this heart breaking story, that destroys whole families in the most gruesome and horrific ways. When Jake’s best friend’s cousin and his whole family are wiped out, the entire truth is kept from Alfonse because it was simply too much to expect anyone so close to bear. Jake makes a promise to bring the person or people responsible to justice. Unfortunately it isn’t that Jake isn’t quick enough, it is more that the killings are occurring all too quickly and the bodies and ultimate horror mounts up, as well as even more ingenious ways in which to kill someone.
This is such a sad story of how some people in the world see others but I loved how Graham Smith has woven his brilliant dry humour into it to give the book balance for me the reader. It enhances the story and takes it from a daunting read to inspiring. I just couldn’t help myself at times as I felt more like a cheer leader shouting in Jake’s corner. There are some hard reading chapters, well not quite. Graham Smith lead me up as close to the unthinkable scenes as he possibly could and then let my imagination explode with what came next. Don’t get me wrong there is no doubt about any outcome but this clever writer lets your mind deal with how much detail you include on the worst bits. Very thoughtful.  Although I have mentioned that this is the second book in the series it could easily be read as a stand alone but don’t short change yourself, read both. Utterly Brilliant!

“Killers who don’t just kill, but who use horrific methods”

The strap line on the front of the book is bang on – the four burning crosses were just the beginning….the beginning of a gruesome trail of bodies. A trail that Jake is compelled to follow to the bitter end and what a trail it is!! Jake is pushed into corners but he comes out fighting as you’d expect from him!

We see a different side to Jake, yes he’s still scared of his mom but he’s got himself a lady friend….and it’s lasting longer than his normal relationships….could this be it, Jake off the market for good?!

I don’t want to say too much about the plot #nospoiler but believe you me, you’re in for a treat. Graham Smith has plotted out a tense fast paced investigation for Jake following a killer with an unusual MO. I love Mr Smith’s writing style; it’s addictive and keeps me firmly in Utah when I read.

I think this is the most gruesome Mr Smith has written so far. I thought “Watching the Bodies” and his latest Harry Evans “I Know Your Secret” were gory in places but “The Kindred Killers” goes to another level…I even winced and my stomach turned at one of the deaths!

A massive thank you to Bloodhound books for my copy of The Kindred Killers.

*FOUR AND A HALF STARS*

There's *something* about this series.  Something the author has managed to capture which keeps the reader coming back for more.  I, for one, love it and will always make a special effort to keep up with Boulder's adventures.  For me, it may be that the books are so wonderfully American.  Regular visitors to the blog with know that I have a bit of a 'thing' for American crime.  Or, it may just be that they are cracking crime stories about a hard as nails part-time crime fighter in the shape of Utah doorman, Jake Boulder.

This time Jake's best friend and occasional employer, Alfonse is in need of Boulder's investigative skills.  Alfonse and Jake make a formidable team with Jake's ability to sniff out a lead and Alfonse's high-tech hacking talent.  Alfonse's cousin, Darryl and his family have gone missing.  Boulder knows instantly that this was not a voluntary retreat as there are signs of a struggle.  The incompetent Lieutenant Farrage and his hapless bunch of detectives have dismissed the scene and intend to do as little as possible.  Thankfully, Boulder is on the case.  But when Chief Watson calls Boulder to Ashley National Forest, Boulder quickly becomes aware that time has run out for Darryl and his young family. Reeling from his recent run in with a twisted serial killer, it looks like Boulder will have to stare evil in the face once again.  Four burning crosses suspended from a tree, four smouldering corpses nailed to them...

I do like a little bit of blood and gore in my reads and Smith has excelled himself with a number of brutal murder scenes in this latest instalment.  Maybe that's the reason I enjoy these books so much!  Smith is quite prepared to break down boundaries and kill off his victims with some stomach-churning methods.  Would other authors be prepared to be as graphic?  I'm not sure....and I flipping love it!  I don't want to put any squeamish readers off though.  If you've ever watched GoT or Breaking Bad then I'm sure you've seen worse scenes played out on your television screen!

I was glad to see the incredibly irritating Lieutenant Farrage playing a very small role in proceedings; being replaced by the more competent, more likeable Chief Watson.  I would be very happy to see the end of Farrage for good and a lot more of Watson in future books.  The other character I would like to see a lot more of is Boulder's mother. She added a wonderful dose of humour to the first book which I was hoping to see again, but she only made one or two very brief appearances - mostly nagging her son!

The conclusion of this book blew me away!  One of the smaller, yet fairly regular characters in the books plays a rather shocking role.  I had never really warmed to this character while reading the first book, or this second novel.  In fact, I thought them to be quite insubstantial.  There are, however, several paragraphs in the build up to the explosive finale which made me completely change my mind about them.  I went from thinking 'pah' to thinking 'woah' (that's the word I actually wrote in my notes, WOAH!).

Would I recommend this book? Yes, without doubt.  It's fast paced, thrilling and you can't help but like Boulder.  So good, so unexpected, Smith knows how to keep his readers on the edge of their seats.  I thoroughly enjoyed The Kindred Killers and heartily recommend this book (this series, really!).  If you enjoy the odd serial killer thriller then you must, MUST make sure you get a copy.

Four and a half stars out of five.

I chose to read and review an eARC of The Kindred Killers.  The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

It is good to have another outing with Jake Boulder in this 2nd book in the series. It will work very well as stand-alone so don’t worry if you haven’t read book 1.

As we get to know Jake better I am not sure if I really like his character but he is what he is. He doesn’t follow the rules and this puts him at logger heads with the people in authority but even they cant disagree with the fact that he gets results (one way or another)

Alfonse is his friend and Jake relies on him and his exceptional IT skills. I am not sure what Alfonse does to fill his time as he always seems to be at Jake’s beck and call. He comes into his own a bit more in this book as tragedy strikes his family. When a whole family is found crucified and burned alive Jake sets about trying to track down the murderers. This is no easy task as the killers are targeting anyone who doesn’t fit in their group.

This book is perfect for people who like the gory side of crime fiction. I don’t want to look inside the author’s head to see where he got the ideas for the gruesome murders that are detailed in this book but it certainly gets the adrenaline rushing and the pages turning.

As Jake struggles with his feelings for Taylor he is also on a mission to find the people who caused his friend so much grief.

There are many twists and turns to this book. As the chase to find the murderers before they kill many more people picks up speed it has the reader guessing right to the end.

I am in shock after reading Graham Smith’s The Kindred Killers – The Boulder has unleashed with such a force that it left me breathless! When Alfonse’s cousin and his family (wife and two children) are missing, he is worried sick and needs Jake’s help to investigate. Soon they discover their mutilated bodies…

Introduction

A Jake Boulder Thriller #2

When Alfonse comes to fetch Jake, in a drunken stupor as is quite common lately, he is furious. His cousin and his family are missing and if ever there was a time Alfonse needs the investigative powers of his friend, it is now. The Police, in the person of the incompetent Lieutenant Farrage (whose influential father is the only reason he still has a job) have dismissed the situation as a ‘domestic’. But Alfonse is convinced something is seriously off and, upon entering the cousin’s home and discovering the blood spatter, Jake can only concur his friend’s suspicions. Then Jake receives a phone call from the Chief of Police, Watson, who is reliable and intelligent which, alas, cannot be said for the rest of the local Police Force. What they discover is too gruesome to describe.

Storyline

Upon examining the crime scene, Chief Watson and Jake are shocked by the sight of the horribly mutilated bodies of Alfonse’s cousin’s family. The cruelty, exposed by the murderers makes them sick to the stomach. How could anyone want to harm a nice and loving family with no enemies in the world? What could be the motive for these atrocious murders executed on children?! Jake knows he needs to investigate and, as in the last case (Watching the Bodies), he again forges an alliance with Chief Watson. The latter grudgingly agrees, fully aware that with Jake, he stands a chance to capture the killers for no man alone could have executed the murders. Jake immediately suspects the victims were targeted because of their skin colour, which would up the probability of finding the killers in racist circles. This has to be kept quiet for now – he impact on the local community would be huge.

No such luck though because the Casperton Gazette’s journalist, Ms Rosenberg (“a short New Yorker of Jewish extraction“), has already found out what is going on and, more importantly, how the victims were killed. Jake is in anguish for what will happen if this indeed was a racist attack. For that matter, will more people be targeted? Soon, we find out and dread for what will happen to Gazala, the employee of the local men’s clothing shop, when we follow her home after work… Meanwhile, Jake checks out the law firm where Alphonse’s cousin worked and the bank where his wife was an employee. And then there are the Algiers family, “a bunch of deadbeats,” known for their racist and aggressive behaviour. Are they behind the killings or do they know who is? The suspense heightens and Jake needs all his mental abilities and physical skills to investigate because before long, more gruesome occurrences take place, leaving no mistake about the abhorrent intentions of the killers.

My Thoughts

I am shocked and devastated after reading Kindred Killers – the second thriller featuring Jake Boulder. The murders are brutal and horrific, the reason why makes your teeth clench and you do not know whether to cry or be furious. I started reading the book late at night, just before midnight and trust me, that example should not be followed. You cannot go to sleep with those images burned into your mind and the only thing you can do is keep on reading this engrossing and gripping thriller and hope Jake catches the killer). Unleash the Boulder, that is how we welcome each new instalment in Graham Smith’s spellbinding Jake Boulder series and in this book, we want, no NEED him to be unleashed and lethal!

Those, who have read my review of the first in the series, ‘Watching the Bodies’, know that I have a soft spot for Chief Watson, the head of Police who does his utmost but, with the hand he has been dealt, that is never enough. I love how the author lets his protagonist Jake Boulder describe Watson’s eyes as showing the “pain and despair for the depths of depravity he encounters.” It shows Watson’s endearing and empathic character – did I mention I love him?? With regards to Jake, after I could have given him a lecture myself (Chief Watson did it !) I admired his persistence and his willingness to go beyond what is needed and once again, puts himself in dangerous situations. That almost weights against the horrific and cruel murders – and the harrowing topic of racism (as I am writing this, Charlotteville only just happened). I highly recommend this book and the series.

When I read the first book in the Jake Boulder series by Graham Smith, 'Watching the Bodies', I thought it was brilliant. It was such a gripping, entertaining read I remember I couldn't wait for the next one to be published. So I was over the moon when I was offered an ARC of 'The Kindred Killers' to read and review. Now that I have finished it, I can only say OMG! What an adrenaline-pumping ride!

Our hero, Jake Boulder, bouncer at The Tree club in the quiet town of Casperton, in Utah, is approached by his close friend and private detective Alfonse to help him solve the mysterious disappearance of his cousin Darryl and his family. An entire family seems to have vanished into thin air. Unfortunately, rather than fortunately, it's not long till the mystery is solved. Four charred wooden crosses are found tied to a tree in a remote area. Nailed to the crosses, the blackened twisted remains of the four family members. It's evident that these poor souls suffered a slow, terrifying, painful death. But why? Who would do such an atrocious thing? Was the family specifically targeted? Or was it just a random attack? This deed bears all the hallmarks of a hate crime.

The town is gripped by fear, and Casperton's detective squad consists of just a bunch of incompetent idiots, so the Chief of police has no option but to seek Jake's assistance if he is to solve this crime. Jake is determined to find whoever did this and punish them. But this will prove to be far from an open-and-shut case. Sadly, the crucifixions are just the beginning. Casperton is soon plagued by a spate of other horrible hate crimes, one more gruesome than the next. Who is behind all this devastation? Why are they doing it? And why have they targeted the people of Casperton?

Well, this is one book I enjoyed and will not forget for a very long time. Once again Mr Smith has kept me captive, glued to my kindle and swiping furiously page after page, desperate to find out what happens next. Though second in the series, 'The Kindred Killers' can very well be read as a standalone. As for the first book, I liked the general feel and small American town setting of the book which the author captures brilliantly. In this book, the author tackles series sensitive topics like intolerance to minorities and racism.

The prose is crisp and articulate and all characters and dialogues realistic. Jake Boulder is such an interesting character. He's not a cop, nor an investigator, but he's canny, strong, fearless and determined, (that is, when not drunk or being told off by his mum, haha!). In this book someone has come to town making enquiries about Jake. Who is this person? What do they want?

The plot is fast-paced and suspenseful with non-stop action. The murders are very gruesome, but thankfully the author spares us the finest, most gory details. Even so, they still made me gasp, wince and heave as I pictured what the victims went through in their final moments. This author certainly knows how to shock, stimulate and provoke the reader and stir their emotions.

I really enjoyed this thrilling, hair-raising ride and I'm already looking forward to the next Jake Boulder adventure. Highly recommended!

With thanks to Bloodhound Books for an ARC of this book and to Ms Sarah Hardy for organising and involving me in the blog tour.

The Kindred Killers is the second book in the Jake Boulder series - it's not essential that you read the first book as Graham Smith refers to the past without excluding new readers, but I think that reading the first would give you a better understanding of Jake.

The Kindred Killers starts off with the horrific torture and murder of Jake's best friend, Alfonse's cousin, his wife and their children. Alfonse calls on the help of Jake to find their murderers as the local police are still as incompetent as ever! The difficulty is that there are no leads; the victims were well-liked within their jobs and the local community so Jake and Alfonse need to establish who would want to do such a brutal thing to a family? When another person goes missing, it starts to appear as though this isn't an isolated murder....why are the people of Casperton being targeted in such a brutal manner?

The crimes in this book are absolutely horrific however Graham Smith has handled this sensitively and without gratuity. There is enough build up leading up to the deaths and detail shared postmortem to truly portray the horrendous death that the victims have experienced but without all the actual gory details.

The Kindred Killers is a fast-paced investigation which is sadly, very relevant in today's society. Graham Smith's writing draws you in and is addictive through to the end. There is so much action in this book that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. But we also see a sensitive side to Jake, both through his new relationship and his trade-off with his psychiatrist of sharing his feelings versus obtaining an insight the warped mind of the murder/ers.

This is only the second outing for Jake Boulder, but it has all the hallmarks of a great, long-running series. I'm hoping that there is a book three very soon!

Memo to self: DO NOT read Jake Boulder novels while eating lunch - the descriptions of gruesome and inventive deaths are too well-described for comfort. Jake Boulder doesn't kill. He fights. Equally dramatically and with a visceral energy that matches the non-stop pace of this second outing for him. He also thinks, analyses, and calls on his friend Alphonse to perform myriad magic tricks using his computer expertise.
I both fear and wonder what he'll have to suffer in book three.

NB This was a PRINT version I read.

I read an advanced copy of this book back in June and have been waiting to share my review with you ever since – and I can now tell you that I thought that this book was just BRILLIANT!!  I loved the plot and the pace for the story was spot on.  The writing style was again excellent and I genuinely loved the whole story, I sat down and read it in a few hours whilst I was making the most of my maternity leave before my little one arrived – clearly I had my priorities right – reading and relaxing!!  I cannot recommend this book and series highly enough and didn’t hesitate at all to give it five stars – for me Jake is a brilliant character and I am very much looking forward to his next adventure!!

Quoting myself a bit - An original protagonist with serious emotional issues. The murders in this story are very well written, graphically described, deeply troubling, the more for the ring of truth that follows the very troubling alt-right emergence in the US and in the EU.

Jake (or JACOB BOULDER as his mother calls him) is a character to follow.

We were first introduced to Scot in exile, Jake Boulder, in Watching the Bodies and from the off I loved the new character introduced by Graham Smith. So when I discovered Boulder was returning in The Kindred Killers I was more than a little excited – I always favour recurring characters and I love to watch their story build across multiple titles.

The Kindred Killers takes a much darker tone than Watching the Bodies – for a start we have murder victims with a very close link to Boulder. Boulder’s best friend, Alphonse, tracks Jake down after Jake has had a heavy night. Too drunk to recall what has happened Jake wakes to find a strange girl in his bed, his knuckles bruised from fighting and his best friend banging on the door of his room (angry with Jake for failing to come to his assistance the previous night). Jake would do anything for Alphonse so his sense of remorse at letting his friend down will drive him into action.

Alphonse explains that his cousin is missing (along with his cousin’s family) but when Jake and Alphonse reach the family home it is clear that there has been a struggle and that the family have not left willingly. It is not long before 4 bodies are found…all four family members have been tied to a cross and set on fire. The killings appear racially motivated and their murders have all the hallmarks of a Klan killing, but Jake is not convinced as something about where the bodies are found does not seem typical of the KKK.

Knowing the local police are not capable of conducting a murder investigation on this scale (and not wishing to be kept on the sidelines) Alphonse and Jake are on the trail of the killers. But we readers get to see that the murder of a single family is just the start of things and there are more potential victims unknowingly facing a grizzly fate.

As previously stated, The Kindred Killers is much darker in tone this time around. I found the murders (and their methods) to be quite unsettling. I deeply dislike bullies in stories and I also dislike people being singled out because someone may feel that they do not “fit in” – as such there were elements of this story which greatly rankled with me. This should reflect well on the author, creating the characters which will anger me as a reader, drawing me into the story and making me will the bad guys to fail. I wanted them to change their ways or to be brought to their knees. I shouldn’t get angry at made up people but I did! Boulder is on the case but how many will have to suffer before he can track down the guilty and see that justice is brought down upon them.

If you enjoy a vigilante story, enjoy tales of the investigator who is not restricted by the rules of the police and a hero that will swing a punch to end a disagreement with the bad guys – Jake Boulder is the guy you need to discover.

BOOM Jake is back! What an opening Kindred Killers provides! Jake wakes up in a rather compromising position, next to a naked woman who is covered in bruises and his own knuckles are battered and bruised! Just what the hell did he do and has drink finally tipped him over the edge? He doesn’t have much time to think and thankfully Alfonse Devereaux turns up at the door looking for his help! What comes next is a roller coaster ride of a read that doesn’t let up until the very last page as Jake and Alfonse become embroiled in an investigation into some of the most horrific murders ever! Not only are the murders horrific, for Alfonse they are personal and Jake is not going to stand by and let these acts go unpunished! Throw into the mix a stranger from Jake’s past is looking for him, just who is this man and why is he looking for Jake? Not for the faint hearted, Kindred Killers will enrage you as you uncover the motivation behind the murders and you will be cheering Jake on to hunt the perpetrators down!

Jake Boulder, what a character Graham Smith has created, he is a deeply complex man but one with a strong moral compass which is further uncovered in Kindred Killers. We see a softer side of Jake this time around as he reflects on his life and his actions. His relationship with Taylor is causing him some confusion – could the L word be about to enter his life? I am loving this development to Jake’s character!

Jake and Alfonso have a strong bond stretching back to their youth when Jake befriended the young Alfonso who was ostracised for being “different”. Their connection runs deep and the first murder in the book hits Alfonso hard. Jake is determined that he will hunt those responsible down. This is a brilliant pairing – they are both very different characters but they just mix so well together and as a reader, you are instantly caught up in the bond created between the two men.

I enjoy the quid pro quo relationship between Dr. Edwards and Jake, Dr. Edwards is determined to get Jake to face his demons and if Jake wants to use the psychologist’s insight and knowledge into those he is out to catch then he is going to have to play the game! I have a feeling Jake is getting more out of this relationship than he lets on!

Oh but Jake’s mammy – such a typical Glaswegian nae nonsense type of mammy, she may be tough on the outside but she has a heart of gold underneath and her worry about Jake’s activities is just so typical of us wee Scottish mammies! She is a wee stoater!

So many brilliant characters in this book my review could be spent talking about them all, so you will just need to read the books and find out more about them all yourselves! I promise you, you won’t be disappointed! And look out for a few surprises, shocks and a couple of familiar names!

Back to the plot and OMG, this one rocked me to the core! Kindred Killers explores some of the most heinous themes and pretty topical in our current climate across the globe, hate crime and white supremacy. The novel provides a dark and raw overview of the movement and it makes for uncomfortable reading at times. It is never overly graphic but provides enough details to make you squirm. It made me more than squirm, however, it made me boiling mad! I wish I could say that it was far-fetched and unrealistic but the stark truth is, it is not. This stuff happens, and while perhaps not to the same degree in the UK as in the USA, but this insidious ideology is present in our every day lives, it is there on our streets, our cities and our towns and it is ugly! Kindred Killer portrays that ugliness to perfection.

Kindred Killers might only be the second book in the Jake Boulder series but it is a strong contender to be in my top books of 2017! Have you ever read the last few chapters of a book holding your breath? I just did! This one will punch you right in the solar plexus and leave you reeling! It ticks all my boxes, shocking yet genius plotting and a cast of characters so expertly developed that they will find their way into your heads and stay there!

Thanks to Bloodhound Books and the author for the advanced ebook copy and blog tour spot in exchange for my honest review!

This is book two in the Jake Boulder series (the first being WATCHING THE BODIES), and even though I didn't read the first book, KINDRED KILLERS read well as a standalone. I definitely need to go back and read the first book so I can get to know Jake Boulder a little better (and I loved this one).

We follow Jake in his attempts to help Alfonse find the people who killed his cousin, as well as his entire family, in a horrific murder. The way the killer murdered them was incredibly twisted, disturbing, and very graphic (readers be warned!) He quickly realizes this is the work of a serial killer when a young woman is found killed with commonalities. When footage surfaces from a cell phone, and is leaked to all major news outlets, the pressure mounts on Boulder to catch the killer.

I have to say that I love the character of Jake Boulder. He's rough around the edges, sarcastic, and witty. What's not to love? Great crime thrillers need strong protagonists, and Smith hit the nail on the head with Boulder. The natures of the crimes committed are definitely graphic and nothing is left to the imagination. Since this is dealing with hate crimes, it's eerily relevant to the events happening in the US today - which made this even more unsettling to read!

Overall, if you want a fast paced and thrilling read, then you need to pick up KINDRED KILLERS. I'm going back to get the first book and I'm looking forward to book three. This has a great protagonist, a twisty plot, and murders you won't soon forget!

I give this 4/5 stars!

I was lucky enough to read and review the first in Graham Smith’s Jake Boulder series, Watching the Bodies, and knew that I would definitely be following the rest of the series. We haven’t had to wait too long for the next instalment and, I’m pleased to say, The Kindred Killers lived up to expectation, firmly placing Boulder on the ‘must-read series’ list. If you haven’t yet read Watching the Bodies I suggest you do, however, The Kindred Killers works equally well as a standalone.

Private investigator and doorman Jake Boulder is back … and back with a bang! The first chapter introduces/re-introduces the reader to the character of Jake brilliantly and it quickly progresses into, what may turn out to be, possibly the most personal case he and his partner Alfonse ever face. I can’t help but like Jake – he is a tough Glaswegian who finds it difficult to maintain relationships – and The Kindred Killers hints that there is more to find out about him in the next books. I look forward to learning more about him. The combination of his ability to handle himself in almost any situation and his detective skills alongside Alfonse’s tech skills make the duo a great team.

Following the gruesome murder of Alfonse’s cousin and his family, the pair set out to find who is responsible. While looking for the motivation for the killings Jake and Alfonse uncover something more sinister and threatening than they imagined. In The Kindred Killers Smith has written a gripping thriller that is incredibly topical and, quite frankly, a scary look at the extremes that certain factions of society will go to in the name of their beliefs. The gruesome way in which the murders are committed show that Smith has researched many aspects of the issues raised in the book. I don't want to say anything more on this as I don't want to spoil anything!

The pace doesn’t let up and I found myself racing through The Kindred Killers in no time at all. Smith ensures that each chapter is essential and has you having to read more. Again, Smith pulls off the setting of America perfectly making you forget that this is written by a British author.

A fantastic follow-up to what always promised to be a great series, The Kindred Killers is a cracking crime thriller and is a must for your bookshelf if you enjoy this genre.

After reading Watching The Bodies, featuring the deliciously handsome and sexy Jake Boulder I was desperate to read Smith's next Boulder offering, The Kindred Killers. Again, Smith starts with an explosively exciting first chapter and just keeps on running with it right to the end of the book.

Jake Boulder is a loyal man ... a good friend, somebody to have in your corner when the going gets tough and his best friend Alfonse is desperately in need of his friendship, as well as his unique skills, in this one. Alfonse's cousin and his family have been abducted and brutally murdered. The circumstances of their deaths soon make it clear that this is a racially motivated hate crime and it's not long before there is another victim.

This plot is particularly relevant now and is an exploration of the damage hate-filled bias can produce. However, Smith tempers this by showing a softer side to Jake as well, through his interactions with his mother. Watch out for the spanner thrown into Jake's personal life along the way too.

Exciting, thought provoking and pacy... the only question left to ask is 'When is Jake boulder 3 going to hit the book shelves?'

"The smear of blood on the wall by the door stands out like a nun in a strip club." This and other quotes/lines in the book run through the Kindred Killers, just taking the edge off of the seriousness of what you are reading, to lighten the firmness that is affecting Alfonse and Boulder in this personal case.

To find out who has murdered Alfonse cousin. These race related killings have graphic scenes, that are heart breaking to read. An extremely unsettling and unrestful read, but totally gripping and page turning.
We learn more about Boulder in depth, which I particularly found interesting and loved this part of the storyline, such a clever way to reveal the man inside by playing cat and mouse with the psychologist.
Without all the current unrest in the world this wouldn't have been an easy read, with the current unrest it left me squirming and very uncomfortable. However Smith tackles the racial issiues with sensitivity but rawness. The bleakness of the crimes has been crafted in to an insightful novel that I hope stays within the pages of fiction.

Jake has had a rough night on the town when his friend and sometimes business partner Alfonse contacts him to say that his 2 cousins and their 2 children are missing and are then found brutally assassinated. A crime which may have racial undertones. Jake occasionally helps Alfonse run a private investigation business in a town where the detectives are not too smart due to political wrangles. Jakes main income is through being a bouncer so he can hold his own in a fight. Jake has his own style and although a bit of a rogue he comes across as a very likeable one. This was one of those stories that although not easy to read in parts, had me gripped. Racial gruesome crimes don’t make for comfortable reading however although there are descriptions of what has happened, nothing is too descriptive, just enough for the imagination. A well written highly enjoyable read.

This is the second Jake Boulder book in the series and the first that I have read. It is good as a standalone, but I will now read the first book.

This gets off to a cracking pace with the gruesome discovery of four charred crosses with the remains of a family nailed to them. Jake and the police Chief are one of the first on the scene, and they are thoroughly sickened by what they found.

Jake's best buddy, Alfonse, is a cousin to the Father of the family so the heat is on to find the killers as it becomes very personal.

A young Indian girl disappears next, and then more. They are each killed in different ways.

You can't help but like Jake, the Chief, Alfonse and his girlfriend Taylor. They are all brilliant characters. It is exciting and a fast pace. A great read.

I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are all my own and completely unbiased. My thanks to Bloodhound Books for this opportunity.

Graham Smith delivers another great crime thriller that you must read. He brings Jake Boulder back and back he is with his rough, tough, and kick a** attitude to help find a gruesome killer but this time it's a little personal as it involves his friend Alfonse's family. Together they are left with just about no clues to find the killer or is it killers?!?! Bodies are being left to be found murdered in some of the most gruesome ways, others are being abducted. And it only gets worse. With the FBI not wanting Jake around can He and Alfonse find the killer/killers? I don't think you will be disappointed while reading this book. Like I said before these books would make for a great action packed crime movie or maybe even a TV series.
